take the 60 minutes in an hour and divide it by the speed you were traveling.

4 mph walk = 15 minute mile
6 mph run = 10 minute mile

(Its the math teacher in me... We have had 2 weeks off from school... I am dying to do some algebra... sick I know)

Thanks so much! And no, it's not sick. The sad thing is first, I love algebra and knew it was a simple equation and second, well...let's just say my job involves accounting! I'm so ashamed.

I'll just claim a tired brain and the fact that I new I could get an answer here!!

Default First Day At It!

Hey There,

I was very impressed by the name "3 Fat Chicks" ... and here I am writing a reply. I need to make some healthy changes in my life and I know I need to exercise more and eat less (and/or eat better food).

I came across this forum and walking/running appeals to me ... and so, I guess walking is a good place to start (given that I do not have an exercise routine).

So glad I found this thread. Running (or rather, runners), have always appealed to me but I always thought I was way to gorky and un-runner-like to even try. I also thought that you had to start off w/a bang. I just checked out the C25K info on www.coolrunning.com. I was doing this last fall on my own, but not so organized or evenly broken out, and saw progress. I am going to try this next week or the following week, after I get back up to walking speed/routine. Who knows? Maybe I'll even turn into a runner myself! Great thread!

Hi Jo! Glad you decided to jump in and post. I can really relate to your comments. I too thought I was too heavy/uncoordinated/silly to become a runner, but I did the Y25K program and can tell you that it truly does work. I started off barely able to get through the first week's 60 second runs, and a few months later, I am running about 25 miles a week and loving it!

Hope you decide to try it, it has been very rewarding for me, and I'm even thinking that I might be able to do a half marathon by the end of 2007. (Of course, I am slow as molasses, but that doesn't bother me in the least)

I'm back at it again also! I really enjoy the structure of the c25k routine.

Hi ladies, I am not a "professional" runner. I am not the fastest in the group, but I love to run. I always weighed about 145. After two kids and bouts with severe depression I now weigh about 200 and am 5'6. I took up running after my 1st son was born. He is now 10. I usually ran 6 miles several times a week. When my second son was born (he is now 3 1/2) I decided I wanted to run a marathon. Within the span of 3 years I have run 6 marathons and 1 half marathon. I have my seventh marathon in two weeks (Houston). My best marathon time has been 5 hours. My first and worst time was 5hrs and 52 minutes. I have made progress over the years, but know my time won't improve significantly until I can lose some weigh. Regardless of my times it is so much fun, whatever the distance to get out there and do it. I have tried radical marathon training programs, but both my husband and I agree that consistant exercise really helped us the most. Running regularly, not necessarily long training runs have helped us the most. I am speaking from the point of view of a person who wants to finish, but who knows she isn't going to ever win. If I was trying to qualify for Boston, my strategies would probably vary greatly. My mom, my three sisters, and I all ran a 5k over the 4th of July. My twin sister finished the 3.1 miles about 21 minutes (slow for her. She took 2nd place for our age group) It took me 29. My other sisters and mom came in between 38 and 46 minutes. My mom won for her age group! It was such an awesome feeling of sisterhood. We were all proud of our accomplishments. Whatever the distance, whether you alternate between walking and running, find a friend and do a race. It just feels cool.
