Welcome Jill, nice that you could join us. There's always room for more! I am Type 2 also, but so far I am not on meds and hoping to keep it that way. I stay pretty low on my bgl. I think it was a good move that we caught it on a fluke and started with a dietician right away. I was a gestational diabetic with my first son, and went on a diabetic diet with my second right away, so I avoided it then. But my mother's paternal family has had a lot of diabetics with a lot of complications, so although I wasn't having any symptoms, I'm glad we caught it. It's kinda funny, now that I think of it. Everything seemed to skip generations on both sides of my mom's family and now it's all showing up together for me. I need to get my sister to do something for herself. She is shorter, heavier, and really unhealthy with a lot of medical problems. She just continues to get stronger medications, and got a handicapped sticker for the car. I know--you can only change yourself.
PeggyJ--do you just need to adjust your meals? Are you eating enough bedtime snack, because maybe your morning highs are rebound hyperglycemia? Do you need a few more carbs/calories in general to keep you from even starting on the rebound slope? I know that is what happens to me when I am sick--I don't eat enough because I feel bad, and then I go up especially in the mornings. That is usually the only time I need a bigger bedtime snack.
OOOOOh we're having a cooldown today! It's only going to be 86 today and maybe some rain. It was so bad yesterday, one of those days that the humidity just slaps you down as much as the heat.
Have a geat day all. I'm doing errands and laundry today so that I can pack up again to go back to Chicago for Graduation this weekend. And see Matt. My husband got him a Wilson volleyball--Matt complained about being lonely so now he will have "Wilson" to talk to (like "CastAway" with Tom Hanks). He's a little slow on the jokes sometimes, but he should get this one.
Hi there gang . . . . . . Boy am I ever running late today for some strange reason.
Weight is holding at 219.4, BGL is up a bit to 7.1/128 this morning; last night just before dinner it was 4.9/88. Weather around here is dull and only supposed to hit about 17C/63F.
Hi JILLY and to the group. Nasty diagnosis Chickie; too bad they didn't catch it a while ago -- but rest assured that the best thing you can do is get rid of the excess weight and, luckily, Metformin is about the only med that doesn't have a negative (i.e., weight-gaining) effect on those efforts.
Regarding the testing patterns -- my personal advice is to always test your BGL first thing in the morning (fasting) and then at least once sometime during the day. If you really want to establish your patterns and get a handle on how different foods and combinations impact you BGL you need to test at least 4 to 5 times a day for a while. Also, keep a chart of your BGL readings and the times you tested -- that will give you lots of information to discuss with your doctor at the next visit. Remember though that each test just gives you a reading for that specific time. The real 'proof of the pudding' so to speak is the quarterly A1C because that gives a picture of your average BGL over the past 3 months.
Have you seen a Diabetes Education Centre and/or a Dietician yet? They usually have some valuable insight into diet related stuff. Personally I think your carbs are a bit too low but if that is what is working for your weight loss, that's great -- just be sure that they are "good" carbs and try to balance them as evenly across the day as you can.
Anyway . . . I'd better get a move on . . . see you all later, gang . . .
Hi all and welcome to the new people,,looking forward to reading your posts..raining here and rained all night with some thunder also,,I have this depression thing going on off and on since April and seems at times I should be happy am just kinda sad all the time,,and really no reason,,my life is good,,everything is pretty solid,,so I might go to the doc and see,,I hate to take a anti_d,,I personally think it is because we have had no summer to speak of and it is cloudy all the time ? anyway bs was 140 this am,,have a headache and tired,,,enough of my stuff,,hope you all have a great day and that the sun is shining some where,,ha,,Jeanne ps..hi Rosey where ever you are,,hope you are getting better,,,
Hi, all. BGl up this a.m. at 144. Sunny again but not as hot as yesterday, thank goodness. Tired, never get enough sleep. Bored at work. The combo of these two makes for bad eating patterns. Sigh.
Welcome Jill. Sorry about your diagnosis. Meowee's right. Try to see a diabetes educator. They are really helpful.
Jeanne - maybe you have seasonal affective disorder. A lightbox might help. Hope you don't have to go on antidepressants. They can be tricky.
My doc offered me info on a diabetes education thingy or a referral to a nutritionist. Unfortunately, I really don't trust the American Diabetes Association guidelines, so I prefer to do my own reading and learning. I'm not saying this is the right course for everyone, but it is for me
I had a definite problem controlling myself with cashews today. No more nuts for me (with the exception of the 100-calorie packs of plain almonds since they are portion controlled).
Wow have we ever been having a strange morning of weather -- First thing it was a very dull and dismal looking day -- around 8 am a band of vicious thunderstorms went whizzing by -- now, it's mostly sunny and mild (not hot) and just a little too breezy to be considered perfect. Hope this is the stuff that continues.
My BGL was up to a 7.4 (126) first thing this am and the scale was kind enough to show my the first 218 number I can remember seeing in . . . hmm; literally decades, I guess.
I posted an interesting article about periodontal disease and it's connection to diabetes over in the main Dieting with Obstacles forum that I hope you'll get a chance to take a look at. I always thought my gum problems were the result of my high BGLs, but this article suggests that such oral problems might be the harbinger of insulin resistance and diabetes.
Anyway . . . hope everybody has a decent day and decently comfortable wether to go along with it. See you all later.
Hey ROSEY . . . how are you doing, Chickie? It's been too long since you stopped by again.
Hi, all. Hot day today. Wish it would cool down a little. bgl was 149. Guess I should go back on the Actos. Waiting for a mail prescription to be filled.
Jill - Even though you don't like the ADA nutrition guidelines, You might still want to take advantage of the diabetes educator if your insurance covers it. They cover other things than eating. I found mine very helpful and I got some free glucose tablets and coupons as well.
Meowee - way to go on the weight loss. Just 18 more to go to onederland!
We are looking at partly sunny and partly cloudy today with a high that will probably not even make it to 21C/70F. Oh well . . . probably a good day for the usual Thursday Mall-Crawl afternoon. Weight is holding at the 218.6 number and BGL was 6.9 / 124 this morning. Hopefully both will be working their way downward over the course of the day.
ROSETTA . . . Hope your weather cools off a bit too and that you get your Actose delivery. I am sooooo hoping to reach onderland by the end of 2008. Hope this current pattern continues.
JILL . . . I have to agree with Rosetta, a DEC can provide more information than just pushing their views on proper eating. I have to admit that I, too, think that the usual ADA guidelines on carbs are a little outdated and should be lowered; but I also feel that a drastic low carb plan is a bit too extreme for really good BGL control . . . one of the current low GI/GL plans is the best bet IMHO . . . one that aims for pretty much equal percentages of net carbs, fat, and protein over the long haul.
KATHY . . . glad I can brighten your day from time to time.
I posted a new article on Metabolic Syndrome over in the main Dieting with Obstacles Forum that I received from Duke Diet and Fitness this morning -- similar to the one I wrote and posted in the Magic foods review, but with a few different insights . . . hope you'll have a chance to take a look at it . . . http://www.dukediet.com/publicsite/n...?issueid=28263
Okay . . . guess I'd better get myself in gear . . . things to do and places to go before the morning disappears . . . see you soon . . .
It's not just the ADA's nutrition guidelines I don't like--there's more to it than that, but I won't get into it here
My mother also has Type 2, and I worry about her because she's not nearly as diligent about her healthy eating as I am. I don't mean she eats more carbs than me, as I know I am on the very low end, and that's not for everyone, but she just still eats crappy foods in general (chips, white bread, too many treats with sugar alcohols, big plate of pasta as a main dish, etc.). And she DID go to a dietician-led diabetes information session Maybe I'm so much more stringent about it because I know I have a lot more time left for complications since I'm so young, plus I REALLY want to be off the Metformin in less than 3 years so I can get pregnant.
Before the bloodwork that led to the diagnosis, I was doing South Beach and had pretty much settled into an eating pattern that came out to be 30-something percent each of carbs, fat, and protein each day, so the three were just about balanced each day. Almost 2 months ino that is when I had my fasting glucose of 214. I would understand a high A1C since that would incorporate previous weeks where I hadn't eaten as well, but that fasting glucose scared me.
Even now, with my very low carb eating, I get readings up to 160 on a pretty regular basis, but it's still only been less than a month since my diagnosis, so I know I need to learn to be more patient
The sun is shining this morning, but it is cool and very windy -- it's also Friday the 13th -- both my weight and my BGL blipped up this morning. Planning to stick pretty close to home today. My calf muscles are complaining about the walking yesterday and that probably accounts for some water retention.
JILL -- I know it's all we've got, but try not to get too excited by those occasional high fasting levels. So much can impact on those, not just what you've been eating. The A1C is the thing to keep an eye on. I was at 8.3 (149) this morning, but that will go down over the course of the day. I'm often high in the morning, usually because of having bounced too low at some point overnight.
Hope everybody else has a great day and that no bad-luck- comes to visit you. Keep things moving and shaking, gang . . .
Hey all good morning am gettine ready for work and wanted to stop by and say hope everyone has a great week end,,summer is finally here so it is nice,,my bs was 130 this am,,am tired and ready for the week to be over,,Meowee congrats on the wt loss,,i know it must make you feel so good,,,happy for you,,
I am off,,HI Rosey and yes it has been to long since we have read a post from you,,,hope all is well,,,,everyone else have a great week end,,Jeanne
I'm high in the morning, too--consistently higher in morning than evening. Also higher after exercise (typically jumps to over 200 after a workout). My mother is the opposite; she gets her lowest readings after a workout. I know it's normal for different people to react differently to the same thing, though.
I have a 1-month follow up wiht my doc next Monday, so I'll ask her about an information session or dietician specializing in diabetes. I'll have to see how much that'll cost since I have a $1,000 annual deductible on my health insurance
Hi, all. The foghorns (actually ship's horns) last night were music to my ears. It is much cooler today, thank goodness. After going up to 150 yesterday by bgl was 125 this a.m. Eating is still terrible.
Everyone, have a great weekend! And Rosey -
Hi ROSETTA . . . so happy you've gotten a break in the weather . . .
Wow JILL . . . you are quite an anomoly if you are going high after exercise like that, especially if you are at a decent level before hand -- are you checking your BGL before exercising? My guess would be that you are so involved with the exercise routine that you might be missing some hypo symptoms and it's a rebound thing. Most diabetes "experts" (whoever they may be) recommend a little carb snack before exercise and a protein snack afterwards. Hopefully your doctor may be able to give you a better explanation.
Hi JEANNE . . . funny how some weeks just seem so much longer than others? Definitely sounds like you are ready for a fun weekend.
