I don't have a food scale at all. I recently ordered a calorie counter book and when it arrived, I found that almost everything was listed in grams. I also would like to know what kind of scale would be good.
At my weigh-in last night, I had only lost 1/2 lb. Was hoping for more so I could change my ticker. Oh, well.
Woke up to a brisk day cooling temps are in the air.So refreshing than what we had weeks ago. Second day of L/C and C/C and it working out fine I lost 1 lb, hopefully I'll lose some more by the time Monday W-I comes around.
emileighThat a great idea, anything that helps you keep in control is a wonderful method. We use to have a group meeting at the hospital, but since than the group disbursed. The only group meting we have is a WW and I don't want to pay $12 to to W-I.
r3alsinc-Welcome to the chat, You'll lose that 1lb in no time. I have a old WW scale that I bought back in 1995,still accurate,so no need to buy another one. There so many newer digital scales now, hopefully some one else will advise you,as I have no suggestions.
Prinny-So sorry to hear that you DH is sick, and how the two of you were looking forward to the event. Hopefully you will be able to use the costumes for another time.
StellarGirl-Thanks, I guess I will have to find out what my carb grams are for my weight & height. I looked over my food journal and I way under the 120 gram. According to your doctor [10% of the total calories] for the day 1400=140grams correct. What if you calorie cycle how do you figure out
the grams???? That is the question. WOW!!! You're doing fantastic losing 10-lb in 3 weeks. I'm not on a strict l/c either,I do have breads that have only 4 net carbs per slice and dreamfield pasta that has 5 net carbs.
tenthousandnights-Welcome,along with my old food scale I use the frozen entree black plastic plates to measure my portion sizes.
Deana-I totally agree with you, I starting to get my walking done outdoors I feel the same like you never like the hot summer months autumn is the season for me also. I used to power walk ,but ever since I have trouble with my right hip,I had to slow day and do fast walking instead. You certainly are doing fantastic in the exercising dept. I crown you Exercising Queen.Keep up the good work.
emileigh: I personally have a food scale but rarely use it, reason being that measuring things will get you a close estimate of the nutritionals and the time thing of not standing there weighing everything I'm going to eat is worth a few calories in either direction to me.
Hi Everyone, I only have a minute as I am heading out the door to go to DR's, but I just bought the cheepest digital food scale that walmart has, and it works great. I personally prefer weighing to measuring as for me it is faster. I think it is all a personal preference, some prefer measuring, some prefer weighing, and all that really matters is the end result of weight loss.
Hi Everyone! I am new to calorie counting.. something I never thought I would see myself doing but it is working so well for me!! I am using SparkPeople to track my days and my allotted daily cals. is 1,200 - 1,550 per day.. I have only gone over twice.. but not badly and I zig zag them within that allowance every few days nad it seems to be workng! lol
We have another crisp day for walking and I will be out this morning.Nothing new, except this is my third day on the L/C plan and I'm finding easier to say no to high carb foods.
Wilma-Hope you had a good doctors report.I use both the scale & measuring cups, but I think with the latter I'm using the wrong measuring cups.I only have the liquid measuring cups don't have the priex type.
CAPE-Welcome to the chat, I find that counting calories is better than being any diet. I do calorie cycling my self but I go to the extreme by having 1000 calories deficit between them.
Have to go, will be back some time later on in the day.
hi ladies. i hope ya'll dont mind if i just jump in here... i have been trying to decide which way i want to go about losing weight, and calorie counting seems to me the most logical choice ( for me at least).
I am so looking forward to cooler weather... when it's hot i have NO motivation to exercise. i have an air conditioner, but it barely works, so unless i want to exercise at 3am, its usually been too hot. i bought the slim in 6 dvd.. i know i wont be thin in 6 weeks as advertised lol, but it looks pretty easy for someone as big and as sedentary as i have been... will still prob kick my bum.
well, i look forward to getting to know you all
I am so frustrated. I am 151.6 again. I really don't understand it. I've gone back and looked at my stats from when I was losing weight and there really isn't a difference. I'm doing everything.
I drink 60-70 oz of water
I watch my sodium
I allow only a quarter or less of my calories for a "treat" (per jillian micheals)
I vary my intake.
My calorie deficit averages right at 1000 calories a day.
I workout every day except monday (rest day)
The ONLY thing I can think of is to eat more so that my deficit is only 500 a day and see if that works.
I'm going to post this on the plateau thread too but I thought I could use all the support possible.
Recent Weights
8/17 151.4
8/24 151.6 (avg deficit for the week before was almost 1200 calories)
8/31 151.4 (avg deficit for the week before was 1090)
BTW, my sparkpeople entries are all public. So if anyone wants to look at my food that's fine.
Hi crcossel,
Is there any chance you are weighing yourself at different times of the day? I know body weight can fluctuate by five pounds over the course of a day.
Are you eating too close to bedtime? Have you considered increasing the intenstity/duration of your workout?
It could be that your metabolism has slowed due to the large calorie deficit, increasing calories may actually do the trick. The last time I plateued I had one night where I fell "off the wagon" and ate McDonalds. The next day the scales finally moved down again! I'm definitely not suggesting to run out to McDonalds and gorge your self LOL, but weight loss can be strange sometimes.
Good morning ladies, I hope you don't mind if I join in. I started losing weight in 2007 with WW then switched to calorie counting. I hit a wall at 174 lbs and kinda gave up. Earlier this year, I started back with calorie counting. I hit another wall but this time I didn't give up. I broke a 2.5 month plateau by calorie cycling. I am determined to finally get to my goal.
I agree that weight loss can be strange. Since I started I have never had a consistent pattern of weight loss. I weigh at home daily, but I only count or post what my weight is at my official weigh-in once a week.
At my weekly weigh-in, sometimes I have lost 1/2 lb. or even no pounds. Then inexplicably I will lose 2 or three lbs at once. Below are my actual weigh-in stats:
July 8 - 193.0 (start)
July 15 - 189.5 (-3.5)
July 22 - 189.0 (-.5)
July 29 - 189.0 (-0)
August 5 - 186.5 (-2.5)
August 12 - 186.0 (-.5)
August 19 - 183.0 (-3.0)
August 26 - 182.5 (-.5)
Sept. 2 - 182.0 (-.5)
These weights were at the same time each week and with essentially the same amount of clothing. My eating has been fairly consistent throughout, so it just seems that there is something about how my body handles food and fluids.
If the pattern holds, then my next weigh-in should be a good one (unless I indulge too much in the Labor Day barbecue )
I've been busy for the past week so I have only been able to do a few quick posts until today. I got caught up on reading the Sept thread. It sounds like we are all a little down in the dumps.
I have to say I was there myself. I just found out that my mother was in the hospital for a week back in July and never told me. She was in A. Fib as she has had in the past but this hospital wouldn't let her leave after it was controlled. They ended up finding that she had a heart defect. I only found out because my aunt was trying to get my grandmother to talk to my mother and convince her to have surgery to correct it. My grandmother didn't think she would get anywhere so she called me. I called her and I believe she will be calling to get it scheduled early next week. I also got her to stop her new exercise program she was starting.... A hole in your heart and going from little activity to 6 mile bike rides up and down hills in CA with the smoke from the fires just isn't smart at the moment.
I was thinking that a little reflection of what is going right in my life is in order. I encourage everyone else to try it too. It might just pick us up out of this mood I see being posted.
Things that are going my way:
1. I was able to save up my calories and fat for the week so that I could have a corn beef sandwich at the Scottish Highland Games. ..and it was so good!
2. There is good (80%) chance my mother will get the surgery she needs in the next three months. ...and a 90% chance she will stop her new exercise program.
3. My husband made it through his first week going back to school. I'm so proud of him for doing something that I know isn't easy for him.
4. And...I'm at 211lbs. I haven't been that low in over 5 years...and I was able to do that for myself. How cool is that!

HOPE EVERYONE IS ENJOYING A RELAXINGLABOR DAY WEEKEND.I know I am. Going to have BBQ ribs some time this afternoon. Not going overboard this weekend as I like to get my first 10% weight down before the end of the year.
TWIGHTWING-Welcome to the chat.I don't blame you choosing calorie counting, why be on a diet plan that deprives you of foods you really love and can't have to much of.As long as you count, nothing is off limits.
SIMBAL-I used to count my calories using the WW point system, but I found that you really don't get a 100% pure count as the point system is rounded out to 50 per point. I know those horrible walls, never had a 2.5 month plateau, that must have been devastating doing everything right and nothing to show for. Glad that you found that calories cycling worked for you.I'm on a cycling plan also, but my is more extreme.
EMILEIGH-Wish I had a pattern to follow as I weigh every day but I total it out to an average weight at my weigh in. I only see small amounts, but again you might be younger than me.
BABYBLUES-Oh I'm so sorry about not finding out about your mom being in the hospital. Don't understand why families do this. I try not to keep my children in the dark as their father is trying despairingly fighting his second bout with lung cancer.TG you found out and was able to talk to your mom. Thanks for you encouragement that you send to this group of calorie counters. We have to take the good with the bad and there more good in our lives and we much reflect in them.
I'll be back, really, next week. This weekend has been nothing but disappointment and I am kind of taking a break from the net because I just can't deal with it.
Hi everyone. Wanted to jump in and say hi. I've been lurking for a bit and am really lovin this forum. My weight loss has been really slow but steady and I've not been feeling very deprived at all. I just got back from a 10 day holiday and was so relieved to see a 1 lb weight loss...not much but hey...not a gain either!
I realize I need the support and focus of a group to keep me on track so I'm sure glad to be here. Starting a blog has been good for me too...helps to keep me accountable and I find that I'm enjoying sharing my thoughts. I'm hoping to lose at least another 5 lbs or more this mth and also just as important, I am trying to make better choices, not just empty calories. Its all baby steps, isn't it? I am trying not to do too much at once, just change one thing at a time and try to get comfortable with it, creating new habits.
Exercise is my downfall...hate it and find it hard to work it into my day. My lower back gave out a few days ago so will be taking it easy for a bit but hope to get on the treadmill soon and try to get a schedule going for it. I just don't know how so many of you find the motivation and time for so much exercise. Hopefully my mindset will change with time.
I am definitely not an exercise person. It encouraged me a few weeks ago when Time had the article suggesting that exercise is not essential for weight loss. However, I do know that there are many other benefits. I am trying to move more just to raise my activity level but nothing too stressful.
bcga100, anyone who returns from a vacation and does not GAIN weight should be glad, and the fact that you lost a pound is definitely something to be happy about.
I managed to stay in my calorie range over the Labor Day weekend. I did indulge in one piece of cake but it was small and I didn't go back for seconds. Hopefully if anyone did get off track, you will give yourself a little leeway and get right back on. That's what it's all about.
