Totally gross story - if you happen to be weak stomached - pass this one by.
Our chihuahua is in love with our other two dogs, and like most small dogs doesn't recognize that he's small. He thinks he can play with the big dogs.
We keep them separated, but they inevitably play together at times under our supervision, it's good for dogs to be a pack - as any dog owner knows.
Last summer we let them romp around together one evening while we were scoping out the little racy car we brought home for a weekend test drive. We were sitting out front, admiring and discussing the car, whether we should buy it when we hear howls and screams from the chihuahua. He had jumped or sneaked under the baby gate we used at the time to separate them.
My husband ran to check on him - his eye was resting on his cheek. Blood was on the pit's back claw. We know what happened, without a doubt. The chihuahua likes to sniff the pit's booty - she gets annoyed and kicks him back away gently. Her nails needed clipping and - well - you get the picture.
Blood was everywhere, I'm not kidding - it looked like a murder scene. The chihuahua was unconscious, my husband drove crying to the 24 hour animal hospital 30 miles away. The pup is seriously beloved by my son, they are best friends - my son was too young at the time to comprehend anything like death happening to his brother. Yeah, my guy calls his puppy his little brother.
We felt absolutely terrible. The chihuahua should have NEVER been left alone with the bigger dogs unattended (he should have been with us - but we were excited over the car), and the pit should have had her nails clipped. Bad ownership all around.
Anyhow, $1800.00 later, the vet saved him and my son's little brother lives. As a one eyed pirate dog. I made him a miniature pirate patch complete with crossbones for public appearances/walks.
