Default Hi! I'm brand-spanking new at all this

Hey everyone!

I'm Miette... I posted an intro in the "introduce yourself!" spot but thought I would drop by here and say hello as well. I have never officially counted calories before but recently learned that this might be the best way to get a grip on my weight loss (or lacktherof) and diabetes management. Yes, I have diabetes! I have a multitude of health problems. Most of them originating from childhood. I'm on a lot of meds, Glucophage for one. I'm also a very picky eater... prefer vegetarian diets, although will eat some meat just every-once-in-awhile.
I would love to learn how to be so diciplined as you guys and gals here. I might do the fitday thing, but right now it's really intimidating. Is that the best way to start? Please feel welcome to just jump right in with comments and whatever. I would love the company.
Take care,

-Miette

Hi Miette, we're glad you're here.
I highly recommend using some kind of tracker for calories and nutrients. In order to eat less, we have to know 'less than what'.
Lots of folks use fitday because you can link it here and we can peek and help.
It can be a challenge to learn but we'll help you. And it does have some flaws (like exercise expenditures and lifestyle estimates) but we have ways with that too.

Thanks so much, Susan. I went out and got a FitDay tracker thingee so you all can see what I'm up to... I noticed immediately that I have totally ruined today's calorie goal with a handful of peanuts. argh! I got my walk in early today.. maybe I should take another one after dinner. lol. Nice to meet you and thank you for helping me out.

Oh honey, you can't ruin everything with just one snack. Be good for the rest of the day ... that's all you can do.
I should go for a walk before it rains.

Susan, thanks! I didn't know peanuts were so... well, fattening! I once heard someone tell me that peanuts were healthy. Well, sheesh...everything in moderation, I guess. I will be a good girl for the rest of the day. We're supposed to have dinner in an hour. It's a wok-dinner so it's pretty light, thank grapes! Still gonna walk after dinner, if nothing else to keep my bloodsugars low. Hope you get your walk in before it rains!

See you later,
-Miette

Good morning everyone,
welcome to all the new girls

I have not been on much lately. Hubby ended up being told he can't go back to work till Friday. Yeah! Love it when he's home.

Well, I tried the Curves Diet for all of 4 days. Yuk! I like my CARBS to much. I am going back on my own diet today.
I was feeling head-achy, body-achy, and just not Moving at all. Gained back 2 pounds. Following the HIGH protein diet for half a week.

I feel that there diet (for me) does not have enough FIBER. (CARBS)
I felt soooo blocked up. So hubby and I said the heck with it. He thinks I was doing very well on my own.
Yes, the other diet swears to make you loose lots of weight... but at what cost?

So I am back to my own diet, today.

Zenor,
I am glad you are getting what ever help you need. I hope it all works out. The only time I ever felt that what last for months after my son was born. Whew! poor Hubby! I cryed over anything. Glad it's gone.

Bobby,
Hope you are not getting the bad weather I saw on TV up your way! Don't miss that at all. stay warm.

Lara,
I just wanted to say that dressing I got last week, wasn't Newman's, It was Kens. It was on sale 2 for $4. Its not bad either. Good taste and little fat. Can't beat it.

Happy dance for those that are still on plan, (and losing too!)

talk more, gotta clean the house and walk.

I have this same problem quite often. As a way to get around it, I get recipes from Cooking Light and concentrate on fixing those that are for 4 servings only. That means my family of 4 eats it all so there are no seconds and no leftovers!

Zenor~hope the meds help and I'll keep my fingers crossed that they don't mess with your diet! Keep on losing!!!

littlered~I hate diets where they restrict what you can eat! Calorie counting is so much better--you can eat what you want as long as it fits calorie-wise. I'll never again do a diet where they say I can't eat something in particular.

Susan~sorry you got wet. Come on down here--the wind will dry you up!!

Miette~ I too eat mostly vegetarian. I do eat meat on occasion (holidays mainly) and I eat fish. If you like to cook a good book to get is the Moosewood Low-Fat Favorites. They have all the nutritional info with the recipe, so it's very helpful. Also, Vegetarian Times (magazine) has great recipes that include the nutritional info. The plus about them is that most of the recipes are fast and easy to prepare.

Susan~ Allison is right! The wind in southern Cal will dry you up in no time! It's no fun though as the power keeps going out. Oh well...

Littlered~ I hope those two pounds come off quickly! What a bummer! I think doing your own thing will work better in the long run. Regardless, you are doing great! You sure are getting more exercise than I am!

Thanks again everyone for the support! I'm having a few minor side effects (nausea & I had a hard time sleeping last night), but they should go away (I hope.) Oh, and I'm hyper today. This promises to be very interesting...

As to the nausea ... I take mine before bed. Can't be nauseous while you're sleeping.

Since in the yesterday I've been in the middle of a work catastophy (work for myself) So, I've been just about running around like a crazy person for the last 30ish hours and it looks like the next couple weeks are gonna be just as crazy... NOT as hectic, well maybe through this weekend...next week.

Yesterday I ate breakfast...then it all went down and I realized at oh about 9pm I didn't eat lunch or dinner, so had a snack while I was still working....bed 3am up at 6am.....Been working ALL day, but was good....I did stop for lunch and just ate an early dinner (no breakfast...ughhh) TOO TOO low on calories and I think I better start carrying some extra trail mix in my handbag.... I'm tired and taking a little break right this minute... LOL Ever realize you can go and go and your ok, the minute you sit and take a short break...You GET TIRED!!
Luckily the kids go to their dad's tomorrow and wed my parents should be back in town!! YEAH!! Some backup help for all this mess!!! I bet my ticker will go down by monday...I dont think I sat still for much!!

Hello all!

Miette

Today I am low for me at 1427. It should all come out in the wash because yesterday and the day before I was at my high end. I did my walk today even though it is still unseasonably cold, snowy and windy. I want spring!!!

I tried a few dried blueberries mixed with the Fiber One - Yum!

Hi,

felt much better today.
Walked 3 miles. on the treadmill.
So far todays count is just under 1400. fiber only 30.
Friday should be much better. I even splurged.

I Even ate some chocolates the little 87 yr. old lady across the street gave me as a Thanks, for taking her to the doctor and the hospital. She even gave me an easter lily and a bunch of beautiful flowers.

Justme.
sounds like you need some help! its ashame you probably don't live around here. I could give you some help. Try to eat better and get some sleep.
hang in there.

Lovemyboy,
I agree with you... Can't wait for warm weather. Thank God I have a treadmill in out of the weather. Add the TV in the garage and I have it made.

Zenor,
Thanks for the support.
Looks like you have been doing better than you realize. You are more than half way to your goal!
I am still new to this moving of my butt! I hope its something I can stick to. I AM determined to do it.
Today was the first time I walked 3 miles. felt good.

So far it has been so worth it... Hubby told me he can see a
big difference! And that is part of why I am doing all this.

Allison, I agree... counting Healthy calories beats someone else's idea of a diet ANY DAY!

Welcom Miette!

Cals today 1600, and not very much fiber (no Fiber One today). We might be going out with friends on Saturday for drinks and socializing, and I'm scared already. It will be our first time out in the last 3-4 weeks I've been CC'ing. I need to plan it carefully, and hope I don't lose it.

on a happy note, my baby is one month old and I added him to my avatar. Isn't he cute! He got his first real tears and is starting to smile a little.
