Thanks to everyone who welcomed me here. I really appreciate it! The encouragement is really motivating too. Thanks to all of you for that. My calories today were 1500 + ... grrr.... Yesterday they were around 1200+. I don't exactly know where I should be aiming, to be honest, I thought the lower the better, but from reading posts here I am starting to understand that maybe I should decrease the calories slowly and gradually over a period of time? Is there a specific caloric intake that one should have when they first start counting?
I took your great advice and munched on carrots today. They actually tasted really good to me! yum!
Walking~ Welbutrin is the only drug that never gave me weird side effects, but my doctor said it would help the anxiety (which is 80% of the problem.) I think figuring a way to relax would be beneficial for me.
I've thought about St. John's Wort, but I'm so fair and anything that causes photosensitivity (the reason for staying out of the sun) usually makes me feel wind burned. I'll keep it in mind though. I'm willing to explore all alternative options.
I really think the fish oil will help. I read all the studies and it seems to help across the spectrum for all mood disorders. I need to up my dosage, but those horse pills are so hard to take. I'm going to try the liquid this week. I was told it wasn't gross, but I'm skeptical.
I'm on a cousin of Wellbutrin called, Effexor Depot. They work similiarly to each other and I have had some side effects but not nearly as many as when on other anti-deps. I'm also on Risperdal, which has made my hormones very whacky. My doc said initially that Effexor wouldn't cause weight gain...I'm starting to think he was mistaken. But, I can't stop taking them ... long way to go in therapy before I go off my meds. Fish oils do help and vit. B's.
Hi Everyone -- so much to catch up with and I hope to get into the groove with this group soon. So much great support with such a spectrum of issues.
I didn't count my calories yesterday -- had a family brunch then came home and snacked on bad stuff -- so much so that I didn't really eat any dinner. I nuked some edamame beans and had some leftover rice -- whoopppeee!!! LOL
So far today I am trying to keep in range -- I wanted to get out and try my new bike but I am unable to spend any time sitting on the bike so that makes it rather difficult to ride it - I guess I could push it to the park LOL.
Miette -- please don't grrr yourself about eating 1500 calories -- as soon as you start eating less than that you will be starving yourself. I have been doing this for a year and its really working (albiet very slowly) -- I keep my range at 1600 - 2000 and I do not feel denied and I also know I can maintain this eating style for the rest of my life. Ok so off my soapbox now -- just make sure you are comfortable with your range and 1500 is pretty darn good. Its the combo of less calories, more exercise and lots of water that makes this work.
The weather is so yucky here, and normally that would be enough for me to eat terribly, but today has been very good.
I've had about 1350 calories so far, and still will have dinner and a snack before bed. I've had:
BREAKFAST - egg and cheese on whole wheat toast with turkey sausage, coffee, slice of cantelope
SNACK - Moroccan chickpea salad on whole wheat tortilla
LUNCH - Whole wheat pasta with tuna, pickles and roasted red pepper with a little mayo, chocolate chip and peanut butter rice cake with a small piece of Easter chocolate candy melted on top
SNACK - HUGE salad with 4c. green leaf lettuce, tomatoes, cukes, carrots, green peppers, a few garlic and cheese croutons, lean ham, dried cranberries and homemade balsamic vinegrette
DINNER - I've thawed out a meatloaf, and am going to make some mashed red potatoes and I think broccoli. May also make some butterbeans.
All that SHOULD get me up to about 1800 calories....throw in an after-dinner snack and I'm about 2000. Whew....this is a lot of work!
Haven't been so good on drinking water today. I need about a gallon per day to stay hydrated. I've done just under a half gallon so far - grrrrrr
I see you do Curves, too.
How long have you gone? Do you find it helps?
I started Curves March 1.
So far I like it. Even if some people say some of the machines are worthless, maybe even not good...I really work up a good sweat. Maybe its at least a good starting place for me.
I see you have little ones too. They are cute. How old did you say they are?
Hi
my numbers for today are
1641 Calories
fat 25%
38 gr fiber
10 glasses water
Boy! somedays that water just comes out faster than I can drink it
I walked 2 1/2 miles today. in 45 min.
I see a lot of you eat HUMMUS. What does that taste like? What do you do, spread it on toast, etc?
New goal this week...
To try a new veggie an/or fruit every week.
this week I bought a can of Artichoke hearts in water. What is your favorite way to eat them?
I have been doing curves less than you, since March 27th! I do like it - I feel that I get a good workout (HR up and stays up) in a small amount of time. For me, time is very valuable. I haven't noticed that any of the machines are "bad" for me, but there are a couple that I don't get as much from. But even on those I keep up my HR. I'm sure that a gym would be better, but I don't have time right now and I really like the all ladies atmosphere!
My girls are Lela (2), Olivia (4 months) and Laurel (4 months). Just noticed that Laurel and Liv are 4 months today....another excuse to fill up my digital camera card.
Hummus is delicious, in my opinion. It is chickpeas (garbonzo beans) mashed with olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and tahini paste (sesame seeds). You can buy it in the deli section (usually) of your market. (I like the 3 Sheiks brand better than Athenos, there are better brands than those but harder to find.) There are variations on this base, like extra garlic and roasted red pepper (yum!)
However, hummus is BEST when you make it yourself. It is very easy and quick, and forgiving. You do it in a blender. The tahini paste is found in the middle eastern/international section (often with nut butters and falafel mix), or a natural market. You can eat it on pita bread, use it as a dip for veggies, sandwich spread to replace butter or mayo, great for veggie wraps. You could put some flax oil in it for extra omega-3's and -6's!
littlered: Hummus can be high in fat....I make it myself and usually use very little oil and tahini paste.....I sort of just go by taste as I'm making it...SOOO YUMMY now you guys got me craving Hummus... Also there are some dry boxed brands of hummus that you add water and VIOLA!! there it is, I dont mind those sometimes and actually keep some in the house for a quick hummus snack!!
YEAH!! My parents will be home tonight!! My mom has been gone for about 2 months!! SHe was helping her mother after surgery and boy do the kids just miss grandma something bad!! It will be nice not having to cook dinner every night now too!! They live down the road and its sometimes easier just to eat with them then to cook for just me and the boys and my mom easier than cooking just for 2...
WELL weightloss for the week is 1 lb!!! YEAH!!! Better than gaining a lb...honestly though this week was HORRIBLE with eating I actually didn't eat enough, since I was so busy with work since Wed....Honestly Between wed and today I probably had the LOWEST calorie daily counts EVER....SOOOO people this shows you...EAT ENOUGH or you WONT lose weight....LOL Yesterday I did a bit better and ate about 1100 calories and that was with fighting off my 5yr old from my popcorn!! This week things should be a bit more calmer!! But I still have way too much to do!!
Zenor ~ I know where you are coming from on losing to prevent health problems. Both my parents are diabetics and my Mom hasn’t controller hers well over the years and now damage is happening. My Sis is also a diabetic and I had a reality check when I had a brush with it. So, my doc said to consider myself a diabetic because if I don’t take care of myself I will have it back again. What horrible side effects, I had the aches from one of them and was so tired I would fall asleep at work but nothing like you described. Those fish oil pills are huge. I have to take them separate from the rest of my supplements and I usually don’t have a problem taking pills.
Joanne ~ Welcome to our group and I look forward to getting to know you.
Theresa ~ Yep, my Mom and I are both short, I am still 5’1” but I am sure I will shrink, and apples. So I know where you are coming from. I wish I could take after my one Grandma, when she was healthy, she weighed about 90 lbs my Mom said. With her last baby her weight was a whopping 115 lbs. Must be nice.
SusanB ~ Please tell me your not taking after your Grandma. HEHEHEH!
Miette ~ How did it go this weekend for you? I can totally sympathize with you because I had a brush with diabetes and still have to be careful or my blood sugar bottoms out. I eat every couple of hours to make sure it doesn’t. Used to be DH thought I was nuts until the diagnosis. I would tell him I was getting sick and shaky if I wait to long to eat but we now realize that it isn’t my imagination when that happens.
OK, my Great Grandma used to chew and my brother got between her and the spittoon and got it right up side the head. UWWWW! She was also made and ran moonshine to supported her family. She looked like a sweet little old lady but she had a bad girl side. HEHEHE!
Rockinrobin ~ Thank you for saying you have a problem with fruit. The first few weeks, went crazy, of calorie counting, I cut fruit out. I just came off a plan that required 4 servings of fruit a day. I liked it but it was really getting old. When I start calorie counting I totally dropped fruit out and I was losing nicely. Then I more recently added it back in and noticed no weight loss. I thought maybe it was my imagination but maybe it is slowing my loss.
Miette ~ I am a pizza freak to say the least. Bobbi shared that she used Light Flatout Bread for crust and it works fantastic. I buy light flatout bread, pizza sauce, fat free cheese, turkey pepperoni and veggies. It is really, really good and not bad on calories. HMMM! May make it for dinner tonight, sounds good and I have all the goodies except some bell peppers. May have to stop at the store real quick.
Allison ~ I agree with the sweet analogy and I also am sensitive to salt because I don’t use it. DH loves salt and has learned to salt his own because I won’t do it for him.
Bobbi ~ Ok, I just read there can be side effects to SAM-e that I didn’t know about so I would say that anyone wanting to take it should check with their doctor. I am not sure how great the risk really is or if it’s just a warning like for medications. Here is just a clip from a webpage about SAM-e. S-adenosylmethionine (SAM-E) is an amino acid that is used in the treatment of many conditions including depression, liver disease, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, schizophrenia, migraine headaches, and to increase bile flow. Other names for SAM-E include: S-Adensyl Methionine, L-Methionine, Adomet, and Ademethionine. This is the page I got the information from: http://www.healingdaily.com/conditions/sam-e-1.htm. This is also the page where I found the possible side effect. I would goggle it so you can get as many different perspectives as possible. For me, it really, really helps me and the side effects from antidepressants were unlivable.
Justme ~ I need to lose enough to get my Sis motivated. She weighs about what your brother does.
Mary ~ I would freak if they blocked me from the internet here at work. I read and type my post into a word document while I am working. The way they look at it, as long as I get my work done its not a problem. I always get logged out before I finish a post so I just type it into a Word document so I don’t lose it.
Claire ~ Thanks for the compliments. As long as I don’t look in the mirror and I am not around my kids I still feel like a tired 20 year old. HEHEHEH! DH and I were talking this weekend and I said look at all these lines on my face. He is in denial that he has them also so I pointed them out to him. HAHAHAHA! He said but nothing like you. I looked at him and said if you smiled and were as happy as me you would have them also but you walk around being a grouch all the time. I said watch, I smiled, I said they disappeared didn’t they. He started laughing because they do. When I laugh or smile all the wrinkles disappear. I said I am just such a happy person it has created lines on my face. HEHEHEHE! I said look at all your gray hair, I don’t have any. He decided to be quiet.
Zoe ~ I hear you. I am trying to break my night time munching because I am sure that is part of my lack of weight loss. I know I allow for the cals but I really think I need an earlier cut off time. I am having a horrible time breaking the night time eating. ARG!
Theresa ~ I really like hummus but I can’t say as it taste like any other product that I have had. A student worker introduced it to me. I like it on All-Bran crackers, pita or Flatout bread. There are several different kinds to choose from and lots of recipes to make yourself.
Carrie ~ I have a daughter named Olivia, she is 16. I just love the name and we call her Liv.
HEY!!! I just put up a before and after pic on mini goal photoalbum board!! check it out before I decide its not a good idea having my pic up on the internet...(I'm paranoid someone will see me that knows me...LOL)
Thanks for the info on HUMMAS. I will look into it more. maybey for special occasions.
Justme.
thats great that your mom is coming home. I know that those little ones of yours will be glad to.
She must be a wonderful daughter. to go to her moms for such a long time.
WoW! someone else to cook dinner! thats just the coolest.
( I wish someone here would try once in a while)
Lara,
What do fish oil pills do for you if your diabetic? my ddinlaw is diabetic. and not taking care of it either.
I am losing to control health problems to. Hight Triglycerides. bad knees. the list could go on. But... its still a good reason to lose.
""OK, my Great Grandma used to chew and my brother got between her and the spittoon and got it right up side the head. UWWWW! She was also made and ran moonshine to supported her family. She looked like a sweet little old lady but she had a bad girl side. HEHEHE""
We had a great grampa that like to do that to my hubby's brother. yuk!
HEY!!! I just put up a before and after pic on mini goal photoalbum board!! check it out before I decide its not a good idea having my pic up on the internet...(I'm paranoid someone will see me that knows me...LOL)
Justme
You are brave... not for the reason you mentioned.
I just HATE my pic taken at all. Never did like it.
Maybe when I lose a bunch more, I will let someone take a new pic.
Theresa ~ I am not sure what fish oil does for diabetes, I take it for my liver. Fish oil has so many benefits I wouldn't know where to begin. Miette and Bobbi might know but I haven't a clue. I take the fish oil for he Omega-3's because I am not a fan of fish. I lose great when I eat it but its not something I can say, YMMO fish tonight for dinner. Wish I could because I really drop when I do eat it.
I am lucky, I no longer a diabetic or even prediabetic but realize if I am not careful then I will end up with it again. So it is encouraging to stay on the path I am on because I don't want it again. I wish you DIL could see my FIL, Mom and Sister to realize the true severity of diabetes. I realize people don't see it as a big deal because there are so many diabetics but its a horrible disease. My FIL is almost blind, has had 12 heart attacks, 1 massive stroke/several small strokes that have left him unable to communicate effectively, memory loss and paralized on one side, kidney failure, has started amputations (toes), no immune system and totally dependent on others to take care of him. My Mom has eye damage, kidney damage and a low immune system. The last time she was sick she almost died and when recovering ended up having a stroke but was lucky no perminent damage. Yes, all these things can happen to none diabetics but diabetes raises the likely hood of these things happening. To me, diabetes slowly eats the body if not controlled.
Lara, you have really put a scare into me. You have really described some scary things about diabetes. Wow. I am speechless. I hope everyone is on the road to recovery and doing something about their health. Wow, scary stuff. Have you tried salmon? It is a very meaty - unfishy - fish.
Just me, I will definitely check out your pics. I too am a bit afraid of putting up pics. One of these days I will just have to grin and bear it. I am anxious to show my before and current pics to everyone here at 3FC. But am just a little weary. We shall see.
I also love pizza. I either make it with the flat wraps or 1/2 of a whole wheat pita, cut circle side ways, so that I am left with 2 circles. I top it with a little sauce, some low fat cheddar and mozzerella, red peppers and onions. Delicious, served with a big salad.
Weighed in this morning and I am down 1 lb., which takes me to 120 lbs lost.
Weekends calories - Saturday - about 1400. Sunday about 1200.
Have a great on plan day ladies. And if you're in the northeast - STAY DRY!!!
