The Sizzlin' Hot August Exercise Thread...

Welcome!

...To the August exercise thread! We're trying to make exercise a habit and give ourselves some accountability!

In this thread, we're setting the number of MINUTES we want to exercise for the month -- whether it's walking or swimming or housework!

We're also tracking how many minutes we have exercised as a group!

Please first post your goals and then add your minutes (for yourself and the group) and get some support and accountability! If you're just getting started, feel free to start with a smaller number of minutes (I did!), maybe just a few hundred. It seems easier for many of us to build on the habit rather than meet a very high goal right away.

If you want to join us during the month -- GREAT! Just let us know how many minutes you want to exercise in what's left of the month!

Also, we are working on our 100K challenge -- how quickly can we make it to 100,000 minutes of exercise. (But don't worry, I'll track those numbers separately...)

Here's where we stand so far on that challenge:
January: 9418 minutes
February: 11,129 minutes
March: 15,917 minutes
April: 10,700 minutes
May: 16,091 minutes
June: 13,603 minutes
July: 14,758 minutes

TOTAL thru July: 91,616 minutes!!! -- Yes, we are almost there! Watch for it, because we only need 8,384 minutes!!!!

Oh boy, here we go again all over! :) Because of the hot weather and I had to curtail things a bit the past couple weeks I am going to go a bit lower than last month and say my August goal is 1500 minutes.

Vortex_VVV 07-30-2006 01:51 PM

I'd like to set a higher goal, but since I didn't make my July goal, I'm going to set my goal a little higher than what I accomplished in July: 900 minutes.

My plan is to start with 30 minutes of low-intensity exercise daily (stretching, walking, strength conditioning) and 10 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise daily. If I achieve that, I'd exceed the 900 min for the month, but I'll leave that as my bottom line in hopes of actually meeting that goal for August. Beyond achieving a minute goal, my mission for August is to make exercise a habit and build up the length of time I can spend on moderate-intensity exercise.

Xena2005 07-30-2006 06:02 PM

I haven't been doing so hot at making my exercise goals so far. I am going to bump mine back down to 600. That will probably even be a stretch.

rkrs6673 07-30-2006 07:24 PM

I am new at this exercise thread and I will like to set a goal of 620 for the month of August...

NotTheCheat 07-30-2006 08:26 PM

I am really feeling like exercise is my key, so I am going to go for 1500 minutes. I will make my goal of 700 minutes for the second half of July, so that is just a bit of an increase.

Heather 07-30-2006 09:00 PM

I have this tendency to JUST meet every single goal! It's very much a psychological thing for me. I make them, but never go over by much! But at the same time, I go up gradually... I think I'm going to go up from 1200 to 1300 minutes for August. I think my minutes might come down in Sept once classes start again.

NoLifeWithoutHorses 07-30-2006 09:27 PM

I'm going to go for 750 this month, with an emphasis on MORE WALKING!

celery 07-30-2006 11:02 PM

I'll try for 1000 minutes.

So... 0/1000.

kaybee1966 07-31-2006 12:52 AM

Well. July was a bust for me. Between my respiratory infection and two weeks of 110 - 115 degree weather, my exercise went out the window and I ended up not even posting the little bit of exercise I've done the past week or so. :dizzy:

SOOOO...I'm ready to start again in August. I will set the same goal that I had for July of 1300 minutes. I know this will be a better month!! :smug:

Vilandra485 07-31-2006 12:58 AM

I'll post back here in August once I've fully made up my mind. :)

Melissa

sugarkube 07-31-2006 01:10 AM

I'm going to start with 1,000. It'll be a boost up from what I am doing now (850) so that'll be good! Exercise is the key for me as well so good to have a goal for it!

nicole79 07-31-2006 07:00 AM

i'm new at the exercise minutes so i'll set a goal of 700 minutes. that sounds achievable. i'm ready to exercise.

You've inspired me, Vortex! I need to become LOTS more regular in my exercise habits! My past record is not good, so I'll shoot for 500 minutes this month.

sweetbaby 07-31-2006 08:16 AM

ok I am new to this thread too and I need to get my behind in gear on execising!! So I am going to start out sloooooow and go with 600 minutes....I know it is not that much, but I do need to start somewhere.

You all are so inspirational, thank you for that!!

Heather 07-31-2006 09:24 AM

People, please don't apologize for setting what you think are low goals!!! :)Just a reminder, we are not competing with each other. Please look at my sig and you will see that my first goals were small (500 min) but I built from there. This is about all of us being healthier!

And, might I add, that in a week with 30 days, 500 minutes is an average of just over 16 min/day, which works out to more than 30 min 3x/week... a recommended number for people in general (though I think former obese people need to exercise more...).

The point is that even 500 min/month is a great place to start and more than most people get!!!!!!

nelie 07-31-2006 10:51 AM

I think I'll join in. On a normal weekend (when it isn't 90-100 degrees), I usually get in about 300 minutes of exercise but as I don't think July will be any different than August, I don't think that'll be possible.

So I am going to go for 900 minutes for the month of August.

NoLifeWithoutHorses 07-31-2006 10:32 PM

Is It August Yet? :hyper: Is It August Yet?? :hyper: I'm ready to get this ball rolling!!! :dancer: :running: :strong: :cheer: :cb:

Heather 08-01-2006 12:09 AM

Val, I ADORE your enthusiasm!!!! :)

ladynredd 08-01-2006 06:50 AM

Val, NOW it's August!!

Misti in Seattle 08-01-2006 08:56 AM

Go team!!!!

Heather 08-01-2006 09:10 AM

Dang it! Has no one exercised yet?? :)

toofatforu 08-01-2006 09:15 AM

my goal is to exercise 60 minutes a day 5 days a week for a total of 1200 a month.

nicole79 08-01-2006 11:12 AM

63 minutes done on this 1st day of august. yeah!!!!:carrot:

Heather 08-01-2006 11:59 AM

So,

Group total = 63 min...

NEXT! :D

angiepants78 08-01-2006 12:46 PM

I didn't do that well in July, I've been working out for like a week now So I'm aiming for 1000 Minutes for august.

celery 08-01-2006 12:47 PM

I spent 45 minutes exercising at the gym this morning. I may go for a walk this afternoon but so far- 45 / 1000.

angiepants78 08-01-2006 12:47 PM

45/1000 minutes today so far, bike for 30 minutes, aerobics 15 minutes.

toofatforu 08-01-2006 02:14 PM

60 minutes for me today

Heather 08-01-2006 02:52 PM

Hey, I notice that many of our first posters are new to the thread! Welcome!! But it occurs to me that we need to show you how things work!

Just to let you all know we'd like you to add your minutes to the group total! That's how we keep track of monthly minutes AND get to 100,000 minutes as a group! It works like this:

Group total ~ 63 + 45 (celery) + 45 (angiepants78) + 60 (toofatforu) =213 minutes!

So, keep track of your minutes for you and help keep the groups running total!

Nightkatt 08-01-2006 04:03 PM

Okee ... me new to this thread too .. but will give it a shot and set my goal for 400 minutes for the month .. thats about 12-15 min a day I think?? I was doing almost that last month of one kind or another .. so should be able to do it ok and make it a breeze by next month. My August started yesterday and I did 37 minutes (I include fast housecleaning in my exercise cos I always build up a sweat when I get cleaning - is that ok??)

Sooo
Group total ~ 63 + 45 (celery) + 45 (angiepants78) + 60 (toofatforu) + 37 (Katt) = 250 minutes!

Hope I did that right??

Thanks! I was wondering who was going to add all this up. This is a very good system and forgive me for not doing it right.

Vilandra485 08-01-2006 07:25 PM

Okay, I'm swallowing my pride and setting my sad, sad goal of 310 minutes, lol.

Today I walked 30 minutes (got in just over 1.2 miles), and did 15 minutes of strength training - upper body with 3lb dumbbells. :) Total: 45 minutes

Personal Total: 310 - 45 = 265 minutes to go!

Group Total: 63 + 45 (celery) + 45 (angiepants78) + 60 (toofatforu) + 37 (Katt) + 45 (Vilandra485) = 335 minutes!

GO TEAM!!! :carrot: :lifter: :carrot:

NotTheCheat 08-01-2006 08:37 PM

Tonight I did 30 minutes on the elliptical and 30 minutes on the treadmill. I also did some kicks with one of the trainers, which was fun.

I am going to make the assumption that Heather (Wyllen) wrote out the names and times as a demonstration, because continuing to add them will get mighty long!

The group total is now 335 + 60 = 395

I figured as much, as I have seen the previous threads, but I didn't want to change anything just yet until it was confirmed...but of course it makes sense! :)

Melissa

Vortex_VVV 08-01-2006 09:15 PM

I did my 40 minutes, woo hoo! 30 min. low intensity and 10 min. moderate intensity.

Personal total: 40/860 remaining

Group total: 395 + 40 = 435

sugarkube 08-01-2006 09:44 PM

I did 60 minutes on the treadmill today!!!! AND I was able to up the speed on the treadmill from 2.3 to 2.5. :)

Group total: 435 + 60 = 495

KristasMom 08-01-2006 09:53 PM

Well, I've just missed my goals for the last two months - there is just too much going on every month.

So next month, I'll achieve my goal of 900 - hopefully, the pool lights won't go off on the last day I have to work out!

Sue

Misti in Seattle 08-01-2006 09:56 PM

Got my start today with 65 minutes of aerobic walking

1500 goal - 65 = 1435 still to go

Group total 495 + 65 = 560

luflic 08-01-2006 10:15 PM
