Hi All -

Welcome cac and 4X4...this is a great place to be...

Sandy, congrats on you and your DH joining forces in this campaign...my DH and I are both doing BFL and it's wonderful to do it together...

JEC/Jayne - while you're in the kitchen, you want to get some good homemade protein bars happening? Mine are tasting a bit...smacky.

Mamawren - I hear you - your last week and my last week were too similar - DH away and kids off school. I am SO happy things are back to normal this week...glad you're back

All is well here - had a great workout yesterday. Did cardio plus LBWO, going to hit the gym again today to do cardio plus UBWO. Then I'll get back to my normal workout routine. I really feel like pushing it up a notch this week.

It was a beautiful 17 degrees and sunny yesterday...I am so ready for this snow to be gone.

Have a great day everyone.

Morning everyone! I forgot yesterday to say hello to Tom, so better late than never. *S*

Thanks Meg, you're right about the stress and that's exactly what I did. Worked it off. As for the cardio, I found for myself that too much equals muscle loss so I stopped it cold for awhile after reading Body Rx..but I missed my Taebo, so I added a gentle amount back in. Some people I've talked to, do 2-3 hrs a day of cardio and to me, that's simply too much stress on the body. I personally think these folks are addicted to the 'high' they get from that amount of time. Only my opinon though.

But the cardio/no cardio debate shall live on probably til someone proves it undeniably either way! LOL

Mel are you reading NHE now? I had that book for quite awhile, forgot about it til Laura started reading it, so I dug it out and OH MAN is it DRY??!! I told Laura it makes BodyRx look like hot porn~ LOL

Gonna be a great day here in the midwest, hope your day is grand too, whereever you are!

Default Cardio

Mindi -- what you say reinforces the point I was trying to make about cardio (and it applies to a lot of other aspects of the plans that we do, such as amount of calories, number of carbs etc): there IS no "one size fits all" answer to a lot of these questions. I don't think they can ever be proven one way or another, at least in a way that applies to everyone. You have to find out what works for you and, from what I've read here, that's exactly what everyone is doing -- reading, trying different eating plans, trying different workout splits, cardio/less cardio/ no cardio etc. and seeing what their results are. That's what I like about this forum -- we all do our own plans and I learn so much from reading about what everyone else is doing and the results that they are getting.

I myself wouldn't dream of telling anyone that what they do is "wrong" (not that anyone here ever would) because only they know what works for their bodies and their individual circumstances. And that's really been one of the exciting benefits of this journey -- feeling like I am finally in touch with my body and paying attention to how it reacts to different foods and exercise. It's kind of an integrated feeling, if that makes any sense -- like my body and mind are working together (rather than my mind trying to deny the reality of my body!!!)

One question here: anyone ever tried just eating when you're actually hungry rather than trying to get in so many meals a day?

I've always wondered what would happen if I only ate when I was actually physically hungry? Not emotionally hungry or stressed or bored, or trying to keep a 2-3hr eating plan going.

Fear of the appetite perhaps? I dunno.

Default Good Morning all!

Wow, it is a dark and dreary day here in MI, but at least it is warm out! Lots of rain expected today, just after all the snow had melted and the ground had dried up!
Mindi - what does NHE stand for? It has got to be boring if it makes Body rx read like a hot porno! That wasn't exactly an exciting book by any means!
As far as your hungry question, I actually find that I am hungry now every 2.5-3.5 hours and I eat when I get hungry. Sometimes this is 5, 6 or 7 meals a day! I am not a believer in going hungry and will throw a little healthy snack between meals if I get hungry. I had to do that last night cause I find cardio makes me a hungry beast for the rest of the day! You can try to only eat when hungry, but as SPII said your adrenal glands are burnt out and may not signal hunger or feeling full until they are healed. Have you tried the 3 full meals and 2 snack plan from the book or are you sticking to Body Rx type of eating? Personally I am following SPII, but am eating more than the 5 meal allotment. I get too hungry and find I do well with 6-7 meals a day!

Default good morning

Hope everyone had a good weekend. Welcome cac and 4x4.

I'm having a fabulous bootcamp! My goal in my head was to get
into size 6 jeans. This weekend went shopping and I'm in a 5 !!!!!
I'm thinking about wearing them with the tags still on so everyone can see the size, LOL. Yeah I know I'm a big dork
For those who don't know, I started my weight loss journey last year in a size 18.

I have a sister and 4 cousins that all started body-for-life and
I'm coaching them, so that has really inspired me to work harder.

We have found a house to rent, but part of the deal was we have to strip 40 yr old wallpaper off the walls and put up new. So that is what I have been doing. We are hoping to start moving in next week. Then I have to figure out how to get across state to pack yet be here to get kids to and from school. Should be interesting.

Well I best get to my cardio, have a great day everyone.

Jamie, its Natural Hormone Enhancement by Rob Fagin. Go here: http://www.extique.com/clones/gen-b-l.html

I'm eating BRX and slowly trying to incorporate SP into my plan. I tend to be hungry too, every 2-3hrs but I'm wondering if its more psychological now, than actual physical hunger? I'm guessing that if I incorporate more fat, as in SP, I'll stay more full longer. Or maybe I'm not really hungry, I just have programmed myself into thinking I must eat.

Just my natural curiosity at work here. *S*

Default I am forgetful!

I forgot to post a response to Meg and her shoulder comments.

"For all those with shoulder injuries, I still (eight months after the injury) notice a strength discrepancy between the injured and non-injured shoulder, especially when doing chest, shoulder, and tricep exercises, so I try to do exercises that require each to work alone, like with dumbbells. Yesterday I was feeling, doing the military press with the bar, that “lefty” was doing most of the work and that “righty” was just along for the ride. I’ll have to watch that."

I am also doing free weight exercises for my upperbody workouts because my right shoulder is doing most of the work. Maybe it is subconcious because I don't want to hurt myself again or maybe it is just that weak, but doing bench presses I notice the imbalance the most. The left side of the bar sags down a bit more than the right side of the bar. it is going to be alot of work to get back to even lifting what I was without pain. Did you have to go through physical therapy and all of that when you hurt your shoulder?
Thanks for the tips Meg!

Default Jamie - Shoulders

Last July I partially tore my right bicep tendon when I was doing close-grip bench presses, probably with too much weight. I think I actually started the injury about six weeks before that doing upright rows with too much weight (the physical therapist said to never do those again). I had pain after the upright rows, but, of course, like an idiot, I ignored it.

After I did the injury -- and it was dramatic -- made a horrible noise and everything -- my doctor told me to lay off all UBWO for four weeks (and man did my legs get strong!) Then I went to 12 sessions of physical therapy. The most valuable piece of advice I got in physical therapy was to never take shoulders to failure. They said that shoulders are such small muscles that when you go to failure, you are right on the edge of injury. So I'm very protective of them now.

Recovery was frustratingly slow, but now I am completely pain-free. But I still have that strength difference and I don't think yours is psychological. At first mine was really pronounced, but it has slowly been improving. It's good for me to work out with a partner because that arm can get a spot when it feels like it's going to drop out, like on pec flyes -- my right arm will sometimes just drop down when I am not expecting it.

I do a few sets of rotator cuff exercises and stretches before I do any UBWO.

Good luck on your recovery!

Default Good Tuesday Mornin' to ya (long - includes doggie story)

Hello ladies...it is so cool to be able to check in more often than once a week! (Though I tell you, it is taking forever to read all the previous posts each time! Our group is growing, and that is wonderful! Lots of strong ladies out there!)

Almost didn't make it in to the office today though...DH and I were walking out the gate and a neighbor pointed out a small abandoned puppy dog...this is common down here on Margarita, as there are TONS of strays...right now we have a cat (Mr. Kitters) and he is enough to handle, and I am really not a dog person, but I can't stand to see animals suffer.

(Mr. Kitty was a stray kitten my DH found one day at the side of the road about two years ago. THe kitten was likely only a few days old as it had closed eyes and was only a few inches in legnth as well as being deathly ill. Cutest thing after he healed up though...I had been in the States having oral surgery, and DH kept it as secret so when I came back a month later, the kitty had crust free eyes, and was healthily drinking from a bottle and was potty trained too!...cute....

A dog however, is a different matter. I am not a doggie type of gal...so we were waylayed for an hour or so today as we tried to figure out what to do with the poor thing. We ened up feeding it part of my meal#1 & 2...(boiled eggs...) Lucky doggie even got to eat the yolks!

Dogs down here are a unique "breed". Most are some sort of mix between the Taco Bell doggie and the worst mangy mutt you can imagine...This little guy actually looked healthy in comparison to the ones in town. (I once saw a dog that I though was a piglet at first site...the only hair on his body was a tuff on his forhead that looked a bit like Marvin the Martian. (I am not kidding, there is a REAL problem on the island with MANGE on stray dogs.) Anway, we took the poor little mutt to the neighbors who will watch it today while i am at the office with DH. I am not sure what i am in for, but nothing could get me to just let the poor thing starve...

That aside, I started the new 4 day split this week, and have been eating acording to plan. I think I may add in a second day of squats per week as they are my fav...(thanks to www.stumptuous.com!)

Welcome to all the new ones, and sorry for my long drawn out about the doggie...I guess I just needed to vent...

=^..^=

Default Tuesday quickie

I'm also the shoulder injury queen- I've torn both rotator cuffs the right one twice. Had surgery once, and LOTS of PT on both. Two injuries were from weights, but by the worst was from a magnificent tennis overhead smash. I'm VERY carefull with my shoulders, and am only now starting to go heavy again. I've been told never to do arnold presses, or any presses behind my back, or military presses. Now I listen. I can always feel it if I've pushed a little too hard- and then have to back off and do just the rotator cuff exercises for a week. I also find that using free weights is much better, so that whichever one is currently weaker doesn't just go along fo the ride.

Mindi- I haven't started reading NHE yet- it's sitting on my bedside table, just kinda intimidating me. From Laura's and JC's comments, I don't think it's going to appeal to me much, anyway.

Jonda- Congratsd on the house and the jeans. I used to keep a collection of the size labels tucked into the side of my mirror. I loved the progession down. Unfortunately, I had to take the lowest one away. I don't think those 2's ever really fit, or if they did, it was only for a nanosecond on the last starvation day of CPB. lol

On eating when hungry and listening to your body: I'm ALWAYS hungry. I know a few of you think I'm starving myself, but I'm even hungry while I eat. And right after I eat. If I listened to my body I'd be back where I started at 180 pounds or more. I know my calories are low, so on heavy workout days, I do add an extra protein shake meal, but I sure can't just eat when I'm hungry. Even squeaky clean!

Meg- Loved the bloat-o-meter! Mine are tight today too, don't know why.

off to work, then the gym, then homework, and the daily battles....

Default Eating When Hungry

Mel -- I'm exactly like you and maybe it's because we are older and don't burn as many calories? I'm almost always hungry too, to one degree or another. The worst is when I am done with a meal and still hungry -- that's dangerous because then I just want to keep eating. My strategies are hot chai tea with a splash of skim milk and SF vanilla syrup or a SF popsicle or SF jello -- just something else to eat. If that fails, then a popcorn bowl full of salad (not popcorn!). I find that I am hungriest on leg day and the day after. And the worst time of day is the morning, so I eat my carbs early in the day and just do protein and veggies for meals 4, 5 and 6.

My conclusion is that my brain is just wired wrong when it comes to hunger and hey, life isn't fair. I can deal.

Default I am new!!!

Good morning, All!

I am new to posting here, but have been reading your posts daily. This site is one I go to for inspiration. The other site I visit on a regular basis is L&S, but I decided yesterday that I want to be an active member of a community, not just a lurker. This community would fit the bill b/c you do not make people feel bad. You see, I need some emotional support in my quest for a healthy body and lifestyle, and I am quite frankly a little afraid sometimes to post at the other site for fear of ridicule.

I feel as if though I know all of you here already! First of all, I would like to say that I admire all of you. Karen, I have followed your progress ever since you started at L&S, and I must say, everytime I see a post with your name next to it, I feel it is a must-read. Same goes for Mel.

About me... I am a 39 year old female living in Ventura, CA. My name is Terry. By the way, my husband and I have the same exact name; first, middle, and last! Makes it interesting when we get mail. Of course, he always opens my mail b/c he says it has his name on it! That's okay, b/c I can forge my name on his checks! LOL

Mineau is the name of my beautiful kitty. I see there is no shortage of cat people here! We will soon be adding a dog to the family. Recently, our dog Bleau, a Weimeramer, passed away from bone cancer. We were devastated.

I would very much love to be part of your boot camp! After having one very successful BFL Challenge in the spring of 2000, I have sort of fallen into a slump. I have attempted some half you-know-what challenges and also did 6 weeks of CPB in November. For this bootcamp, I plan on doing a modified BFL.

One of the reasons I want to join your family here is b/c of your tremendous support of one another. I really, really want some support from friends and I want so much to offer support.

Sorry this post is a rambling one. After not really posting anywhere, I guess words were all bottled up. (There's more where that came from!! )

I thank you for reading this post and I look forward to some friendshipss made here. Wishing all of you wonderful people a blessed day filled with only good things.
Terry

I understand the constant hunger. I am working on whether it is phycological or physical. BFL (I know it is my first week) has helped differentiate between the two thru the regular planned meals.

Good luck with the sholder recovery. When either of you injured yourself. Were you pushing the weight amounts?

Last night I went to the gym to do an UBWO and forgot my sheets. I stumbled through the routine. I am spending some time this morning memorizing the routine. I feel like I am back in college cramming for a final.
