I got up at 6 am and shoveled some snow. It was really just a dusting so I can't call it a workout. But I was glad to have the driveway and sidewalk clear.
Then I made myself coffee and turned on the Weather Channel. They were talking about UK and showing that pretty much the entire country is under a blanket of snow and it's still coming. Our colleagues from the London office didn't show up for our weekly phone conference - I guess they are snowed in. We are supposed to get some more of the white stuff, like Lydia reported, on Thursday but unless the forecast changes drastically, it doesn't seem to be a major event. But it is cold. My dogs don't even play in the snow much - they just do two laps, quick potty, and are banging on the back door to be let in. Would anybody like to figure out why my Java is not working? I am not talking about coffee - I mean Java from Sun Microsystems. :-) |
Hi all,
Birch - how are you doiing? I heard on the news that the UK, and especially Wales has shut down because of the snow. OTOH, the report here is that it was 4-5 inches of snow, so I hope they have been able to clear the roads. Not snowed in yet, but the middle of the country had the worst traffic in years, still 200 + kms of traffic jam. The snow is supposed to hit the south this night and early tomorrow, so I'll have to see about going to work. Lydia, mel -ouch on the joints. Rather a good idea to add "injury free" to my list of resolutions. Shannon, Birch - all decoration (1 entire small box) are still up. The annual christmas tree fire is coming saturday so i'll have to have the tree ready for pickup by the boy scouts at 10 am. Alena - I'm thinking of you..we seem to both be in a "daily workout" personal challenge. Hi  to everyone. Cheryl ??? WO today: 30 mins rowing machine watching an old episode of pride & prejudice (the version with colin firth) have a great day all, and good luck with the snow! Rabbit |

I'm still quite jealous that everyone has snow. It's 8C and sunny here, but this is Canada and I want some darn snow!
Back on track after a few days of just walking (I think I needed the rest) Jan 5, 2010 Walk: 5km morning with dog (will do another 2km later, he is giving me puppy dog eyes) Workout: Kettlebell swing: 8kg x 10, 12kg x 10 + 10 KB Clean: 8kg: 3x8 KB Press: 8kg: 3x6 (these are hard, my left is weak) Windmill: (bodyweight) 3x3 KB High Pull: 8kg: 3x8 Squat: (bodyweight) 3x10 Stretch About 2 hours of activity today... that's a lot! I've been eating way above maintenance so it's all good  This one doesn't like my KB presses (seems to kick a lot during it) so I'm going to phase them out after today |
Awwwww!!!!

:swim: last night. Fun as there were kids' lessons going on, mostly pre-schoolers, and they were so cute. I'm working on increasing my distance, and putting lengths together without that 1-2 min break at either end. :) My goal is to be able to do 500 yds without stopping, and then to do it all with crawl stroke (I alternate with breast stroke now, and end with back stroke for "cool down" ). The only problem with swimming is that right now it's very tiring in that I come home and want a nap! And I'm usually very hungry. Need to plan a snack beforehand. Last night I ate dinner ~7, sat down to watch a PBS documentary at 8, and found it hard to stay awake for that! I need to be more productive in the evening just to keep life running smoothly..... |
Ahhh, it stopped snowing/raining - yay! :)
Our tree/decorations are still up as well. We took out the storage containers on Sunday and then both agreed we were still enjoying the tree, so we decided to wait til this weekend to take it all down. Today may be epiphany, but I doubt we'll have the energy/inclination to do it tonight. We'll leave the tree in the yard as a shelter for the birds for the rest of the winter. |
I was feeling really lazy today and not in much mood for exercise. But then I reminded myself that I can't let Rabbit down and I also thought about Midwife's smart words: "The pain of discipline is less than the pain of regret.''
That did it. January 6: P90X Back and Biceps Pat, I am leaving the lights on the tree in the front yard for at least another month. They are blue and to me, they are more winter lights than Christmas lights. I hate the darkness. Swimming usually wipes me out too and I need to eat something immediately afterwards - my stomach seems to have an emptiness of an elephant's size after I swim. I usually have some carbs about an hour before the swim and then something a bit more substantial afterwards. Good night to you all. |
Ah, Alena!
Now I cannot let YOU down! Lifting today, I'll report back when I'm done! edited later: no lifting after all, but a yoga session. I found out in the warming up that I needed yoga more than lifting, and felt pleasantly streched and bendy after that. Also glorious weather here sofar: sun is out and it is very bright with the snow. Silver - are you thawed out yet? Rabbit |
Nice that we can support each other. :) I on the other hand opted out since the headache I started the morning with stuck with me all day and in fact go worse so I came home and laid down for a bit, then warmed up some leftovers for dinner. Feeling some better but going to bed a bit early and hope for the best.

Morning everyone! Hopefully a good one, at that.
Sounds like many of you are dealing with bad weather. Here's a game for you: watch the weather report as it makes its way through the people at work. Person 1 reports to Person 2, "we're supposed to get 2 inches of snow." Person 2 passes it to Person 3 as, "we're supposed to get 2-3 inches of snow." Person 3 passes it on as, "we're supposed to get 3 inches of snow." Before long, the office staff are anticipating a foot of snow ... and then the sun comes out. Weather telephone, for adults. An uneventful day at the gym last night. Tried the crossfit WOD, which called for wall balls (throw a 10-20 lb ball at the wall 10' up, from a squat-like position) and pullups, in rounds and timed. My gym doesn't have a ball of that weight, and wouldn't let me mark up the wall with it anyway, so I substituted dumbbell thrusters (sort of an explosive squat to shoulder press). I misread the substitution info, though, and used a 45lb bar instead of a 25lb bar. No wonder I struggled. Since I don't work out with y'all, it's rare for me to see other women lifting at the power racks. Yesterday, though, my "neighbor" was not only a woman, but a super strong woman. She loaded up 135 on the bar for bench, and proceeded to crank out 10, then 10 more, then 10 more after that. (I can bench 135, but certainly not 30 per set!) Classic gymnast or swimmers' body, too: short, wide back, narrow waist and hips, etc. Very inspiring, even though I have no aspirations to be a gymnast or swimmer. be strong// K |
Rabbit,
I love the word 'bendy'! Very cool. :cp: Pat, I hope the headache is gone. I hate them. Mine sometimes get to the point where they are borderline [light] migraine but fortunately not very often. I had a LOT of headaches before I had an eye surgery. Kim, I actually don't have to play weather telephone. It is enough to watch the weather channel. Their forecasts are extremely reliable. When they say we will get 4 centimetres of snow is always means we will get 4 inches of snow. It never fails. :dizzy: BTW, I love your blog. And it IS very entertaining (but of course not only that). Would you care to elaborate on what you said about the machines: Machines put you in ergonomically incorrect positions, unless you happen to be one of the 10% of the population for whom machines are sized correctly. (Hint: none of the 10% are women). That is interesting, I didn't know that. I do use some machines although I try to stick to free weights as much as I can. I love to come here first thing in the morning and check what was posted overnight. A perfect start of the day.:) Alena |
Good morning, all -
Pat, headaches are awful! I had one too. Horrible. Hope you feel better soon. Only have a moment but wanted to check in. One week of 2010 is now history. Does time fly or what?!? One of my resolutions is to not drink soda - diet included. So far it's been good. Difficult, yes, but I'm sticking with it. I notice that my eyes are not as puffy and today the scale is down 2 pounds. Midwife, I love your quote! Pat & Alena - swimming does that to me, too. So does skiing! Sacha, glad your workouts are back in full swing! You can have our dusting of snow and the 0 degrees it came with, too! :) Hello to all, I've got to dash but will log on again soon. Keep on keepin' on! |
Morning all. Yes my headache is better. I did manage to do 3 loads of laundry last night, so all was not lost. I've had migraines most of my life starting as a teen. The frequency is much diminshed, and I have not had one in over a year. This one was not, but more I think a matter that I was fasting for a blood test and I didn't sleep well the night before. Slept very well last night, and was able to eat breakfast at my normal time today.
I have a quilt guild meeting tonight so I'm planning to go swimming again between work and the meeting. I have some food to eat before and after, and that should keep me full, and out of the sweets they usually have for snacks! Denver - good luck with the soda. I had quit real soda years ago and last year gave up diet. Now I drink only water, coffee, tea, milk in a latte, and, um, wine..... |
Good morning! Well, afternoon now I guess. I got in five miles on the treadmill yesterday. Planning some strength training when I get snowed out and have to go home. Considering I've seen one flurry so far I'm figuring it will be going home at normal time.
Sacha - great workouts! And fantastic picture! Rabbit - sometimes I need yoga more than other workouts, too. Might need it today - I'm not feeling very bendy today at all. Pat - glad you are enjoying the swimming! Glad the headache is better today! Alena - nice job getting to your workout! Kim - we have some 'weather telephone' going on here today. My downtown location is already starting to panic because of snow in northern GA that may or may not be moving downtown. Denver - I don't drink much soda at all. DH has pretty much cut out all as well, and he used to drink a lot of diet soda. He seems to be feeling better as well, and I've noticed a decrease in visible puffiness as well. Interesting side effect from diet soda. |
Kim - like your blog!
Denver, Shannon - I'm going to give that a go. I don't drink all that much of diet soda, might cut it back even more. Silver, Cheryl - are you snowed in? Pat - good to hear your headache is better rabbit |
