Cute shoes, Lydia! :) I had those as a kid as well. I lift in a pair of super lightweight Nikes (Nike Free? I'm too lazy to go look) They're much more stable than runners or cross-trainers (those I use for cardio).
It's -12F (-24C) here today, so I'm no hurry to go anywhere. At least it's daylight finally (sunrise ~10:10 am). I need to go to the grocery as the cupboard is very bare.... Exercise will be swimming, which happens at 5:30 pm. |

I've been considering a pair of chucks as well for the lifting, I always feel unstable in my twelve year old nike walking shoes.... Might look at the rogues. I got a bonus and am feeling a little frisky. :)
Sacha - dig the kettebell avatar. Mel - I'm still working on balancing on the bosu for a regular squat. Haven't gotten to BSA yet. :dizzy: I did about 45 minutes of ab and core exercises on new years eve and still feel it when I sit up from a reclined pose. Had no idea how hard it is to lift legs and arms at the same time for the supine raises. Eek. Lydia - I remember you saying MIL liked her progression clock, did you end up getting a light clock as well? Pat - and I thought it was cold here when DSS and I went out for a haircut this morning. Your -12 makes my 24 seem balmy. Rabbit - I'm with you on the decluttering. The boys are going to visit my MIL tomorrow and I'm taking down holiday decorations. It is so much easier when there isn't anyone else here, and as it involves a lot of lifting, carrying and stair climbing I can count it as tomorrow's workout if I don't make it to the park. Today is an off workout day. I've done six days in a row now, including 24 miles. I'm so doing that half marathon in March... Good evening all! |
 Hi Denvertechchick! Always room for more :)
Kudos for keeping up with the gym even if the eating derailed. Get it all aligned, and you're golden! Mel |
Whoa, TWO pages already!!!
Mel, I would be more than happy to whip up the roasted duck (plus the sides) anytime you decide to visit (but it is really a wintery meal - once we were not able to get together until June and it is not quite the same (and it was a HOT June that year) so plan accordingly. LOL Midwife - I opted for Chocolate Trifle gelato because Rosemary loves it and when I looked at the nutritional info, it was actually on par with frozen yogurt (although slightly higher in carbs). I added strawberries and blueberries and tastewise, the combo was very good. The shoes look groovy - maybe one day, when I don't have to live with custom orthotics. Oh, by the way, this is not a New Year's resolution (I don't do those) but my plan is to exercise every single day in January. The only exception would be if there is a lot of snow to shovel (but then I have a snowblower this year, yipee). My jeans do feel tight and I need to get back on the wagon full time. NO EXCUSES AND YOU PEOPLE HAVE TO MAKE ME ACCOUNTABLE!!! There. So yesterday I did 50 minutes on the treadmill (steep hill climbs) and today, I did 35 minutes on the elliptical. I was hoping Zumba would be back (since it was supposed to be back in January) but not yet (should start on Tuesday). I had a haircut prior to that and then read for a bit (at the salon, to kill time) and I started to get hungry - Zumba would have been fine but I didn't feel like doing any weight as I knew I would not last long with a growling stomach so I will do weights tomorrow morning. Hiya, denverchick! Welcome to the best forum on 3FC. :-) Alena |
P.S.
Lydia - if you didn't watch Love Actually it is on TV at 9 pm tonight (on WTN if you have it). |
Thanks for the welcome, Mel & Alena! You ladies are awesome!
Mel, I was inspired by 1000m row. I tried to do that after my elliptical HIIT and got to 500 and my legs said "ok you are done now." So 1000m - wow and ouch! I lift with very slim shoes - Merrell Barrados or Converse or Vans. Usually Barrados; they fit very well, it's almost like you're barefoot. They aren't lifting shoes, it's true, but I don't get the wobblies like I do with the cross trainers. Some people complain that the Barrados "offer no support" but that's exactly why I like them! Happy to report good diet and good workouts today! Sunday is yoga day - difficult but very wonderful when done. I do better when I go once a week. That's another thing that needs to happen more frequently. I am using the long weekend to make a list of things that help me be healthy and thin. Then I'll type it and put it on the refrigerator and on my desk at work! Hope you all have a great weekend! |
I'm here!
I've been on vacation/lurking! I really want to switch things up for myself but I haven't figured out how or what. I have karate starting again on Tuesday and school starting in a couple weeks. I am trying to formulate a plan for myself but I only have a vague idea of what I want to focus on for the next couple months. |
Alena, Lydia = By coincidence "Love avtually" was also on TV here today. i downloaded & watched it last week. Nice!
Pat - -24 C !!!!!! EEEK! We are in the grip of the 2nd cold wave: it will freeze next week, and -5 to -10 C is predicted for tonight, so the entire country (minus me) is hopefully anticipating the canals and lakes in the north to freeze over. It is a dutch thing: if there is ice the entire country (minus me) want to go skating. Snow clearing cardio for me today & biked out to bring my glass to the recycleing station at the supermarket. the weather was gorgeous: sunny and all the trees had a snow dusting 9we had 2 inch powder snow).very pretty! And I cleared 1 room in my house today. Alena - good idea to exercise everyday! everyone, have a great day, Rabbit |
I lift in running shoes that have too many miles on them to run in anymore. I'll have to ponder these shoes.
|
I bought a pair of Chuck Taylors at TJMaxx this afternoon for $24.00. We'll see tomorrow if they make any difference.
Except for heavy squats and dead lifts, I think the only time that cross trainers aren't adequate is if you are doing Olympic lifting. A highly cushioned shoe absorbs the energy that you need for explosive strength. If you are doing anything seated, dedicated arm or chest work, it just doesn't matter. |

*So tired. 5km walk only - no weight training - taking the day off! |
Hi Denvertechchick! Missed replying to your first post because I was on my iPhone, sorry! Welcome!
I didn't do any formal exercise today - 4.5 hours of taking down Christmas decorations instead. 10 rubbermaid tubs I brought downstairs empty, filled, took back up to the closet. Two trees I broke down and hauled up to the attic. My HRM said I burned 850 calories so I'm counting it as exercise. :) |
Shannon,
You didn't tell me you live in the City Hall!!! 10 rubbermaid tubs - oh Lordy! The only Xmas decorations I had this year were 3 little teddybears that I hung on a dead branch (well, dead branch - it's one of those special woods from northern California - manzanita or somethin'? ) I had no Xmas decorations this year, other than the lights outside, as I was not here for Christmas. Nelie, I will be very careful not to say something that might offend you. I wouldn't want you to practice a karate chop on me. Mel - Please translate for me - are Chuck Taylors jeans or a pair of shoes? I meant to ask if you found some jeans you are happy with. Rabbit - It's very cold here as well. But hey, if I have a choice between warmer temps and snowfall versus Arctic air and no snowfall, I will take the Arctic air. Gym done - I was doing arms (mostly triceps) and chest. I threw in a bunch of floor wipers just for fun. :-) Alena |
I've lifted in Chucks for a long time and I love them, especially for deadlifts. About a year ago, I bought a pair of VS Dynamos when a company rep posted on the Crossfit forums about a 50% off sale. I do prefer them for squatting over the Chucks, but not enough to pay full price and I do 90% of my workouts in the Chucks. On the other hand, if I did more Oly lifting and less powerlifting type workouts, I'd probably wear the Dynamos more.
The difference between crosstrainers and either the Chucks/Dynamos was noticeable for me. I believe I get about 15-20lbs on my Squat and Deadlift maxes out of them. This thread got me to visit the Rogue store for the first time in a long time. I notice that they have a Reverse Hyper now. Now that Rogue is carrying these and Louie Simmons is doing some seminars for Crossfit are these popping up in any of the Crossfit facilities any of you go to? I always wanted to try one to see how they would be for my lower back. Any of you have an opportunity to use one of these? |
