Sandisuze-Labeling people is terrible. I'm glad you are recovering from those mean words.
Jeanne- I need sweets so badly some days. I found Natural Choice Full of Fruit ice pops in the health food freezer in the supermarket. 60 calories, really really delicious, expensive-4 something for 6. But it makes me feel good to know there is something sweet at the end of the day and I would be spending more if I bought junk. Ben and Jerrys Cherry Garcia, which I can eat the whole container myself, is 3.25.
I did good last night. We went to a pot luck and I stayed within my calories. I even had a bite of a brownie.
Tonight is another dinner party. Just us, and I don't know what she is making, so I'll try to save as many calories as possuble for the evening. I can't tell people I'm dieting cause they have all seen me fail so many times before, but this time, I have you guys and i won't fail.

Thanks for the lunch suggestions everyone! I'll have to try the wraps and I'm going to look for some lite bread too. I miss having sandwiches for lunch!

Sandi ~ Try not to let that diagnosis of morbid obesity bother you. Sure it's depressing to hear, but the good thing is that you are doing something about it!

Theresa ~ I'm going to look for the fast food calories too! That is a GREAT idea!

Jeane ~ I'm a sugar addict too! I would have killed for a big bowl of ice cream last night, but I ended up with a fudgecicle instead...only 60 calories and it tasted just as good. Ok, maybe not "just as good", but it was good and saved me about 500 calories. ;)

We're almost through another week...keep up the good work everyone!

Purplefirefly 08-11-2005 10:18 AM

Suzy great choice staying away from the ice cream...my hubby ate all ours so it is no longer a threat...and I don't intend on buying anymore! I told him he could go get it himself if he really wants it. He needs to lose weight as well, so he can get some exercise going to fetch...but I know he won't he'd rather do without :D good for him.

Thanks for he kind words and support, everyone! So far, so good for today. I walked on the treadmill for 35 min. After, I had a banana and a bowl of melon (honeydew and cantaloupe). I also drank close to 32 oz. of water when I was completing my walk.

Lunch is harder to plan for. Today I might scramble up some eggs - or maybe I'll hard boil some for egg salad. I would love to be able to eat tuna more often, but I am restricted with my tuna intake because I am still nursing. I can only have one can per month and I have already had my quota for August. I need to pick up a better bread for me when I go shopping later. My DH loves potato bread so that's usually what I buy since I don't eat too many sandwiches.

I know one of you gals mentioned planning what you eat at the beginning of the day. I think that's an excellent idea. I may pick up some extra tupperware containers for that purpose alone. That way, I can portion out my fruit and salads or cut veggies.

jjeanne 08-11-2005 10:36 AM

Sandi - Does your grocery store have candy-free check outs? I am going to have to stick with those since that was part of my big downfall yesterday. They had candy bars on sale for 3/$1. I have a hard time passing up a bargain. I have to remind myself that crappy choices like that will be no bargain in the long run where my health is concerned.

Mel - a size 9! And baggy at that?! You go girl! Great job!

Melisa - great job on getting the whoile family on board with the healthy eating. My DD has a sweet tooth. She'll eat OK for breakfast, but the other meals can be a bit more challenging.

Cadwell - when is the interview? What is the position? Good luck!

Theresa - WTG with the calorie counting! Try to forget about the nasty label the doc gave you. My DH is thin, but truly must have heavy bones because he gets an overweight rating on some of those weight charts. Also, that dessert you posted sounds really good. When does strawberry season end? I figured it was over since the prices here have really started to rise.

jjeanne 08-11-2005 10:39 AM

Laura - excellent work at the potluck! That really took a lot of determination.

Suzie - I may have to pick up some fudgecicles. I have some Italian ices in the freezer. They are not as low in calories (I think they are 120), but they are fat free and take awhile to eat.

sandisuze 08-11-2005 11:03 AM

Theresa.. That recipe sounds YUMMY I am buying stuff today for it! maybe add some FF cool whip ??? and then rice and beans .. I make that and add medium salsa and chopped onions. sometimes I leave off the rice and roll it all in a Whole wheat tortilla - the lofat kind

Jeanne- I understand about sweets- I am addicted to bread, pasta, white potatoes and refined carbs- cake- cookies-chips.. I bring italian bread into the house and I can eat half the loaf slathered in butter all by myself.. so I told my family NO MORE breads like that in the house.

Thanks Melissa, Recipes will be appreciated- I am finding lots on WW recipes and even checked out the dottie's weight loss zone- I think someone had suggested it on here - I think people could do WW without joining WW ;) don't tell anyone I said that :sssh:

Thanks guys for all the nice words of encouragement- I was so down yesterday and blah.. I am doing better today and the WW points system seems to be pretty easy to figure out-it kinda takes the guess work out of what to eat and what not to eat.

I have got a couple of bad food days ahead and need to pre- plan so I don't go over points.
Saturday is the 2 hour (each way) trip to the veggie tales show and they are stopping at McDonalds ( I am addicted to fries...)will eat a salad or maybe a chicken sandwich with no mayo.. and then Tueday the 16 is family night at the Minor league ballpark - we all got free tickets for the game and they have NACHOS and hot dogs and BBQ ARRRGH - I think I will eat very carefully that day and eat a salad before I go and splurge on popcorn or even a hot dog. you can't take food into the park But the prices are cheap and they have bottled water too.

My one friend who lost 145lbs on WW told me she had all kinds of trouble with staying in points or calorie range until she started counting at her evening meal. she would start her points or calories with dinner and end them before dinner the next day. This way she ate dinner, had a nighttime snack, breakfast, snack, and if she was going over calories/points she would eat veggies and salads until dinner. that way she would have her bedtime snack and not stress over "I can't eat anymore tonight". It was easier for her to eat a salad for lunch and snack on some carrots and celery in the afternoon than to not have a serving of popcorn for a snack at night. I may try this way too-I'll see how it goes today..

Thanks again all for your support-
gotta get Back to work now.. :comp:

chicken sandwich without mayo is 6pts so that isn't bad for a meal. fries for a small one is 5pts(kiddie size) It says in my book that the bacon ranch salad is only 3pts, cobb is 4 and caesar is 3 or the grilled chicken caesar is 4. There are quite a few choices that way. I find planning ahead helps me alot. 1 hotdog with a bun is 8pts.
Today is my icky day. I once again splurged and I find that one day a week thing isn't going to work for me. I spend the whole rest of the week losing what I gained instead of trying to get rid of the old weight that was already there. So yesterday was the last time for me-geez I think I said that last week too...

jjeanne 08-11-2005 12:10 PM

That McDonald's grilled chicken Caesar salad is really good too. I had it the other day for lunch when I met up with some friends for lunch and shopping at the mall.

Hey girls...

Thanks to all of you for WW-tips. I'm not doing WW, but the point-system *IS* another way to put things into perspective for us all! I've been having a tough time planning dinners for the family (I'll cook whatever DH wants and if it's not OP for me, I'll eat something different), so I'm hoping to find some mutually-liked recipes! :) It's really me who's the picky-eater in the family, so we'll see. ;)

Sandisuze... I'm sorry you had to endure such a painful label yesterday from your ins. company! Labels are really awful things...! :( I'm glad that they're eating the bill on the WW program though. I'm certain you'll see great results from it! :) As for the weekend ahead, definitely go into McDonalds armed with your list of "Can Haves..." and you should be a-ok! :)

Theresa... Congrats on staying below your cal. limit yesterday! :) It's super important to listen to your body... if you're full, don't force yourself to eat it simply to get your cals. in. Instead, maybe try a few smaller meals throughout the day... you are still getting what you need plus you're really kick-starting your metabolism. Just a thought. ;) Thanks for the strawberry pie recipe, I will definitely have to try that! Sounds super yummy!

Jeanne... I'm so totally with you on the sweet-tooth bit. Man alive, I would eat choc. chips just to get my "fix". Bad, I know. Good for you on getting a walk in last night! A walk is a walk! :) And today, 35min on the TM already! Stellar! WTG! As for planning the day's menu, first thing, yup, I have to. It really pays off to KNOW what I'm allowed... so when I feel that grumbly in my tummy, I can go into the fridge/cupboard and not have to hum-and-ha over what to eat. I find it easier to look past the cookies, ice cream, etc. :)

cadwell... Don't worry about the 2 desserts, today is a whole new day to work toward your goal! :)

LauraB... Congrats on staying OP at your potluck last night! That's fabulous! :) I'm sure you'll do fine at your dinner party again tonight! :) Keep up the amazing work!

SuzyMc... I usually buy WW bread (comes in whole wheat or white) from the grocery store, it's a lot smaller, and thinner, but still a great option when wanting toast or a sandwich. It is a bit more expensive, but worth it, I figure. :) That fudgsicle sounds delish! I will have to seek some out for those awful chocolate-cravings!

As for me... well, I did good yesterday, even though I wanted to binge like crazy after arguing with DH over something utterly ridiculous. But I didn't even venture into the kitchen other than to refill my glass of water.

DH and I have a date-night planned for Saturday and having done some online searching of restaurants, I found one that serves what sounds like a heavenly poached salmon with rice and vegetables. I figure that's far better than what we had previously decided on -- pub-fare! I already logged onto fitday.com and entered my daily menu for that day. So much better to plan ahead.

Jogged for 25min yesterday and did 35min of strength-training. I'm taking today off... except for our walk this evening. Will be back doing the other stuff tomorrow.

Well ladies, I hope you're all having a great day! Take care of yourselves, stay HAPPY and HEALTHY! Best wishes sent to each and every one of you!

~mel

I am starting to worry about eating away from home and special occasions. I did good last night at the pot luck because I knew there was going to be a fabulous shrimp, avacado and spinach salad and I didn't look at anything else and I just ate that. It was fabulous and I entered the shrimp avacado and 1 tablespoon olive oil in fatday and it was fine. But what do you do when you don't know what to expect and can't plan ahead. Tonight is a sit down dinner, just us and the hosts and I won' t have lots of choices. I don't want to say I'm dieting cause then it becomes a topic that can go on all night. Help.
Laura

neo98292 08-11-2005 02:27 PM

I can only tell you what I would do. If it is served to you, I would eat half of what I was given, except for any salad, veggies and say I was too full for dessert. I then kind of scoot things across my plate. I had learned to do that whenever my aunt made her seafood casserole cause it made me yak-lol. She thought I had eaten most of it when I had just scooted things around. If I served myself, I would load up mostly on the salad and just take little dollop of what was available but still avoid the dessert, feigning fullness.

LauraB 08-11-2005 05:04 PM

Thanks Melissa. That's a good idea. All of a sudden, after being homebodies for a while, we have a bunch of dinners and that is always where I just go wild eating. I don't want to do it this time. I am happiest eating in my own house and not having food as a social event right now.

it's august 23, for a position as a transportation planner with ca. dept. of transporation. i applied for this same job in another part of the state a few months ago and i didn't even get an interview. so i am pretty excited about this. this one will be even better because if i get it i will only have to commute an hour or so instead of two to three. yay!
if i can just lose a couple lbs by then those pants i want to wear will be a perfect fit. i tried them on yesterday and they were just a little snug.
i always stress about what to wear to interviews. maybe i should concentrate on finding out something about transporation issues in san bernardino, which i know zip about, since i have been there like, once or twice :?: .

that's the same thing where i ran into trouble with the two desserts. dh and i went to a dinner at the home of someone from our church. we all had puddings for dessert, but the hosts had also bought those drumstick ice cream cones for us too. hopefully there will be salad that you can fill up on so all you need of the bad-for-you-goodies is just a polite nibble.

:stars: You know, I've been wondering about this idea of a free day for a few weeks. I have always been an "all or nothing" type person. I'm either eating healthy food, staying away from dairy, wheat, chocolate and citrus (all of which I am allergic), most sugars and drinking water OR I am eating a lot of the food that I deprive myself of when I am healthy. This is why I do things like lose and gain 50 pounds on a consistent basis (except my last gain was closer to 85 lbs and I'm now at my highest weight ever).

I don't really think I will ever be able to eat things I desire in moderation. So, this idea of a free day is interesting to me. If I can just eat as much as I want of anything I want for one day a week then perhaps I will be able to maintain my "healthy days" for a longer period of time (hopefully forever). I sometimes think that it's not even the food I'm missing, it's just the feeling of deprivation that's making me feel awful, resentful, and crazy.
:^:

Anyway, I've seen a lot of people in the forums post their opinion that a free day is an unhealthy idea that promotes binge eating. I don't know. I'm wondering if you guys have ever tried a free day or know anyone who has.
