Thumbs up Thursday

Diet Coaches - Ate reasonable at a potluck dinner. CREDIT moi. I did go back for some more veggies but skipped the desserts all together. It wasn't hard to avoid high calorie meat dishes since all dishes were vegetarian, LOL.

Robin (RobinW) - Congrats in getting the designer web sit up. And congrats on "keep growing" even though I understand that hiring the first employee is a major watershed. (Wondering if Bill Gates felt the same way, LOL.)

Jeanie (Kuhljeanie) - Hope you get your full self back for your trip to New York City this weekend.

onebyone - Ouch for pringles; ouch for eating one's art, LOL. Wishing you strength in "PERSISTENCE in VICTORY".

shrinkin - Big Kudos for getting right back on track with all the good pool exercise. And Kudos for resisting the chocolate dessert at the office.

angelmomma210 - Waving. Know it's an important week for your DH at work; continue to send supportive thoughts.

Readers -
"You'll learn to respond to the voice in your head that tries to convince you that you must eat right now." Beck, pg 37.

yesterday

op food (easier than I expected)
op supplements

Observations went well, I managed to find at least one example of everything my professor was asking for. Now, I just need to type it up and come up with my own interpretation of what I saw.

Went to dinner at my aunt's house. we had a very nummy chilly, fresh veggie tray and cornbread that she made without the Crisco (go, her!) She made some gellatined apple juice for dessert (another big improvement) which I unfortunately was too full to enjoy. I begged a tiny taste off of Bruce's spoon, just enough to stimulate a taste bud or two, since I hadn't ever had it and she'd gone to so much trouble to find a dessert that wouldn't trip me up.

Then (and this is the really amazing part) Aunt D passed up dessert too! I congratulated her as we were departing and she downplayed the achievement ("Well, I wasn't hungry and it'll be there later") When just last week, she was telling me how hard it was to resist cleaning her plate and eating past satisfaction. So it looks like she still needs to work on giving herself credit. "That's right," I told her, "and good for you to realize that!"

speaking of credit...

shrinkin: for being back OP so soon! I hope your arm recovery exceeds all expectations

onebyone: Persevere, my friend! Never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever EVER give up!

jean: Steroids sound very unpleasant! How long do you have to keep getting them? Good luck on working out your dietary needs. I'm a big advocate of being aware of your body's signals and conforming your diet to that.

angelmomma: Thinking of you and your DH still.

Nothing yet on dh's work. He is home and on admin leave so he is paid. We hope for the best. Will let you know. Since we have turned it over to the Lord...it is better here. Dh says thank you all so much..it is deeply appreciated.
Kinda weird having dh home and he has been doing dinner...it is ready when I get home. Still would rather have him at work.

'Afternoon!

Im sneaking in a post....its busy, and Im falling behind a bit. Eating is off, and so exercise. I really need a stay-at-home wife!! Someone to do the laundry, groceries, cooking, vacuuming etc! I just dont get it....we work all day and its still expected that we take care of the house. My husband is literally an old hippie......so you would think he'd be more modern on the ways of the house! He isnt When I ask him to cook we eat out....things we women couldnt get away with. I just need a wife!(in addition to my husband )

Bill~Kudos for eating proper at the potluck. I havent been to one of those in over 15 yrs, they are always so much fun too. Hmmm, Bill Gates....I wonder if he fussed over it like we are lol I think we will start with college interns. I need to learn to be "hip" again My daughter thinks Im cool, but she doesnt count, she's only 11

gotta run.....more later

I swear hubby is psychic! After all my gripping this afternoon....he went home early and made supper while I finished up at the shop. I should feel bad.......but I dont, cuz I still have to go grocery shopping

onebyone~ thanks, it certainly seems like its thriving. I get a little frazzled/worried when others talk about how slow things are, and they want to know what Im doing to bring my customers in. Ive noticed people are buying smarter. I am an alternative to the screen printers, and on the multiple color jobs we have them beat. So the ones that are doing their homework, are finding us. I just need to knock on a whole lotta wood to keep from jinxing everything!!!!! Things are good, and I keep thinking positively!

shrinkin~Kudos for passing the chocolate dessert at work!!!! How cool that your hubby is from this area. Does he know the north buffalo area? If he is familar with Hertel Ave, he probably knows where Marco's is (everyone seems to) our shop is right next to there! Yes he would have gotten alot of snow in orchard park....all the surrounding areas get alot more than metro buffalo. Most of the time it snows like mad, then it melts in a few days. We kind of have that perpetual spring mud/snow/wet mess all winter.

Well, since I havent found a wife yet.......I need to go grocery shopping.

Hi Everyone,
I have just read the Beck Diet Solution and have the workbook. Today is day one and I would like to jump in on your thread. I have been doing the South Beach diet with some success but feel that I need to address the head issues as well as the food issues so here I am.

Default Thursday night

Evening, coaches! Early morning meeting tomorrow...so night time post.

So far, an OP day to report, although I am not totally sure about my calorie count. Picked up some sushi for lunch and package says it is 560 calories for 6 small pieces. Does not seem right to me; is white rice really that high in calories?

Night time is tough on the psyche. Challenge of food desire combined with home alone. (DH returns tomorrow; have not seen him in 10 days). Must stay busy tonight. I eat less that way. Who was it that said their diet tactic was to go to bed because you can't eat when you are asleep!?

Made it to the pool this am and got in 40 minutes of "3 extremity" deep-water exercise. I really like my "home" pool in the morning. You'd think liking it would make it easy to get my body in the car and get there, but somehow there is this little voice that always manages to whisper some little sabotage in my ear...like "oh, you really want another cup of coffee, you can go tonight, or tomorrow...or..." Have to work at stopping that little . Today: MOI=1; =0. Yup, that competition thing again. LOL.

Facing work travel again on Sunday. To Philie for a meeting that was not on my calendar until 3 days ago. Meeting is going to be weird in that I am really not supposed to be there (long story). Travel will make me more behind than ever with the rest of my work projects. Also, will have to scout for a pool as the hotel's pool is outdoor and is now closed. So, at risk for falling off the exercise wagon. REALLY bad part is I don't know how I am going to get arms well with another round of schlepping luggage. Frustrating. OH WELL. PT is bracing herself for me to be worse again next week.

Happy1025- I went through Beck book in the late summer and early fall. Now, I reread parts as needed. Making the Advantages Response Card is crucial. I am back to reading mine twice a day. When discouragement sets in, knowing why you are doing your program and verbalizing that you really want to do it is what either keeps you OP or gives you the shove to get back on the wagon. Also, empowers you to recognize it is a choice. Nothing unfair about that.

RobinW-Kudos on getting that grocery shopping done. I used to hate it, but I have recently gotten into making more frequent, brief grocery visits. Makes a big difference for me. Ouch for the "off" targets. Creating time and energy is tough. I would love a wife too. I will ask DH your NY questions when he gets home. We had about 108" last year of snow...so bet we were at least in the same league as Orchard Park. Our average snowfall is somewhere around 50". So, we should have "negative snowfall" this year to get back to our avg. LOL.

angelmomma210- that you checked in today. Happy to hear that you are at peace in spite of turmoil. Are you and your diet coach still in touch?

twilit tera-Woo Hoo for getting observations completed! Kudos for planning for and executing controlled eating and for recruiting your aunt into "Beck" thinking. AWESOME. Just noticed your signature that says you have been craving free for almost 2 months!!! What is your secret??

BillBlueEyes-Never seen a vegetarian pot-luck. Hmm, bet it was good. High five for skipping the deserts.

onebyone-Aw shucks for chips, kudos for thinking that next time will be a real, regular potato. Oh Well. Keep going....persist, persist, persist. Visualizing you in that coat. Got that vision?? Believe it.

Off to run some errands....that will keep me from eating!

Thumbs up Friday

Diet Coaches - Had a grilled chicken sandwich that was brought in for the working lunch. Ignored the fresh baked cookies, sodas, and chips. CREDIT moi. But better, since I have these every three months, I asked that salad be included next time, and was promised that it would be. Double CREDIT moi for planning my lunch for one workday in January 2009, LOL.

Robin (RobinW) - I think you're cool, too. And I'm over 11, so I count. So there. Here's to old hippies.

shrinkin - Ouch for having to drag your luggage through Philadelphia. (I will make up my own story of you appearing unexpectedly at the meeting, LOL.) Kudos for overcoming the Sabotaging Thought and making it to the pool. Yay for DH coming home.

angelmomma210 - Sending supportive thoughts. Know that it's tough just waiting.

tera (twilit tera) - Congrats for surviving in a classroom with real kids, LOL. Kudos for good eating at your aunt's house and Kudos to your Aunt D for moving on.

happy1025 - Yay for getting started with Beck. Recently Beck stated that the first few weeks are the most important. Amazing things to confront in just those first 14 days.

Readers -
"Most thin people, especially women, stay thin by being incredibly careful about what they eat. They might tell you that they don't, but mostly they do." Beck, pg 40.

Morning, dear Becksters! Oh my... here it is after 8am and I'm still yawning my head off.

Thursday
OP Food
OP Supplements
Planned Exercise

Homework is reaching critical mass. I have one overdue short-answer paper, my mostly finished biology lab is due today and there are two observation papers that need to be typed up. Then there's the biology lab quiz and have I mentioned that I haven't started preparation for the labyrinth workshop I'm leading on Sunday?

(Yet somehow I still have time to come here and say hi to all my friends!)

happy1025: And to my newest friend, to the Beck thread! I think that any weight management plan that doesn't include dealing with mental roadblocks is only half a plan, and the Beck book has really helped me so far!

angelmomma: the waiting really is the hardest part.

Robin: Y'know, it's very common for even the most "liberated" man to simply not think of the house as his responsibility. It just seems to be a lot easier for men to accept that women should have equal opportunities outside the home than it is for them to accept equal responsibility inside the home. It's nothing intentional, just centuries of social conditioning that we haven't quite shaken off yet.

And of course he'll prove you a liar the moment you say anything about it. Hope you have a good day at the shop!

shrinkin: I don't know what to tell you about your sushi, but it wasn't the rice. Only 242 per cup according to caloriecount.about.com. My thought is that there was a lot of added fat somehow. Were the ingredients listed anywhere?

for planning ahead to resist temptation at night. Pity about the travel plans. My advice: swallow your pride and ask for someone to help you with the luggage. You do not need to complicate your injuries! Maybe if you can't find a pool, you could at least go for a walk. I know it's not as good but any activity is better than none.

Thank you for noticing my sig! The last time I had a serious craving that resulted in a binge was the beginning of August. I took home a box of little debbie oatmeal cream sandwich cookies and ate the whole thing by bedtime. Since then I haven't had an overwhelming desire to eat something. I've had to deal with emotional desires to eat non-specific items, and there was one time I wanted pizza, but worked it into my plan instead of chowing down at the first opportunity and eating til stuffed.

I blame the kick-a vitamin-mineral supplements! My guess is that since my body is getting all the nutrients it needs, which I could never manage to get on my diet alone, it's not sending those powerful but undecipherable signals to my brain that make me crave unhealthy food.

Bill: for controlling your eating when the menu wasn't under your control (again!) for being proactive about the menu next time!

Thanks for the congrats. It did get a bit noisey, which is somehow easier to bear when it's not my classroom to deal with. The hardest part about it was that I'm supposed to blend into the background and not disrupt the class, but they had center time, which is very self-directed and a few of the kids decided that their center activity was going to be getting me to play with them. I can't say that I minded, but it made for a tough call. My thought is to encourage their social development I should respond positively. Besides, kids are fun. Finally, though I had to excuse mysellf and let them continue on their own.

Hi Becksters.

I am having a tough time staying OP. Specifically I am not getting my meals in this week. I think out of my 5 days I've been OP with meals twice.

My plan of choice has three very clear rules:
1. eat every three to four hours
2. drink 80 oz water daily
3. follow the type of day based on the carb cycle you are in

I followed the carb cycle day but I didn't eat enough nor drink my water therefore I couldn't have stayed OP could I?
I suppose it is more accurate to say "I did not eat off plan."

OH WELL. I'm moving forward. This week has been all over the map. Too much work, too many deadlines, not enough time. There are issues now in the ceramic room where I work. They'll be straightened out on Wednesday afternoon as we have a big meeting scheduled... good. I'm stressed out over it. I am refusing to fire anything in the kilns until we get things straight.

So given all this I am inching FURTHER AWAY from that 249. OMG will I NEVER get below it???
See?
This is where my head is at.
This morning the scale said 256. Stupid scale. I refuse to believe you scale for all the reasons noted above that I have been off from my plan the same thing shows on the scale. My body is messed up and I cannot trust the scale!!!!

me ---><---scale

On a happy note, I spent the whole day today making a puppet. Tomorrow we are doing a stop-motion animation with our puppets, including making a set for the puppet to be in. I am doing a FREE workshop with the visiting artist at our school, Graeme Patterson, who spends his time making animation films and touring the art galleries with the sets of his films. Awesome. I have always wanted to learn this and now I am halfway there. Here are some pictures of what I made today. From left to right is the actual progression of my puppet: wire to foam covered to pantyhose covered to completed and seated front and back views. He's wearing a mesh shirt, gold swim trunks and sandals... black feather comb-over...
Tomorrow we learn stop-motion animation and make about 4 seconds of film! Woohoo!

Hi guys,

Can someone help me? I was thinking of getting the Beck Solution book and workbook tomorrow. I have been jumping from one diet to another in a panic to stop the scale from going up, to no avail. Its not the diets tho, it's emotional and stress eatting. Im getting a divorce next year and things are just difficult around here so I stuff the feelings down with food. I'm trying to get a handle on it...can someone tell me if Beck for emotional eatting as well? Oh, and I also have a teenage daughter who knows everything *nuff said*
