Well, the week ended about as crazily as it began. I've been steaming along full speed to keep up with classes. So I haven't been regular about posting.

OTOH, I've been very OP food for exercise and supplements. I must have overdone it a bit with the nitrates and artificial flavors recently - my mood really declined the last couple of days, and I can't trace it to anything but food. In fact, looking back, Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday all inlcuded meals with those types of ingredients, and I noticed the decline on Wednesday. I'm being very careful while those chemicals work their way out of my system.

Excited about tonight. Halloween party at church. B and I are making zombies of ourselves and I'm bringing triskets and brain dip (sculpted cream cheese under salsa in a skull-shaped bowl).

:group hug:

Default Saturday check in

Greetings, Coaches,

Doing pretty well. Made it to grocery today and got lots of very healthy things. Ambrosia apples....even sweeter than Honey Crisp! Yum. Last of the fresh corn. Treated self to some deli salsa. CREDIT MOI for getting some good food!

Did pretty hard 40 min pool workout using flippers for about half. Flippers really enhance leg resistance. Starting to have some left knee pain, so I may have to back off a little. Elbow seems better, but had to ice shoulder. Oh Well.
Working on preps for two weddings. DS in two weeks , so I will spend much of tomorrow scanning in photos for RD montage. Need to get DD's budget, venue and date finalized. That's the fun stuff. Going back to deal with mom's issues next weekend....that's the not so fun. Oh well. Must be done.

DH is travelling again so will be tempted this week while home alone. That is my old self's version of "If no one sees you eat it, it does not count."

Twilit tera-woo hoo for veing OP for this week and for fun of Halloween party!

Angelmomma-Glad you are feeling better. Hope you and DH get some long overdue good news this week.

jazzmegirl-Yup, Beck is how you think about food, exercise and health. As Robin says, the Beck plan lets you pick the diet (along with a backup). IMO key diet issue is getting fewer calories in than you use. You can do that many ways. Some plans are more healthy than others. Some are more flexible than others. You choose what works for you. Exercise is a key ingredient of any health plan, but that too is flexible in the Beck approach. Hope you decide to join us!

RobinW-Good luck with the DVD player. Kudos for unplanned exercise and for staying on target with your food!

BillBlueEyes-Whoa credit for that walking, but double credit for the great attitude about GETTING to walk TWICE for same purpose. LOL for having to FIND some other place to walk. I'm betting you will.

Onebyone-You are so busy! Hope you are making time for your plan. It is so hard when every minute could be taken up with three different things all of which you need to be doing. Kudos for getting some rest.

Sending a great evening to all!

Default Good evening everyone wk11 day6

Hi Becksters.

Well I pushed it all week and now I am relaxing. I just finished my 2008 market season with a profitable but cold and rainy day and a cancellation of the market for tomorrow for the same reason: a forecast of cold rain. My booth partner just got a part-time job, Fri and Sat nights 4-10pm doing maintenance at the community center up the road from where he lives. He is throwing in the towel with regards to making and selling things. He hasn't said it out loud but he is slowly filling in all his spare time with volunteer activities and now this job, which he does need to do, but it's making me feel sad. So many of those around me are having a tough time. I have my own doubts about what I will do next year. If we don't move I may choose to do some festivals on the road again. Or not. Maybe I will be teaching? It's all up in the air. Of course it's the last day of the season and of a very tiring week and it's not the time to make decisions about your future. No.

Given all this I could not shake the stress and it fuelled my eating today. I had my carb up day ie. can eat any and all carbs and I ate to overful, twice. I am not supposed to do that. Still, for 90% of the week I am 100% OP. And given this I manage to lose 1lb a week which is enough for me. It's starting to add up. SO it's a beck OH WELL to this deviation and put it behind me and move forward. I hope to get that gym membership soon. That should help keep me ontrack and lift my mood. especially important as the days get shorter and colder.

RobinW I told DH that you said "salad is what food eats" and he laughed and laughed. I think of that everyday. Very funny. Hope your weekend is going well and that you are sitting there, feet up, relaxing, watching a dvd on your new machine!

BillBlueEyes I understand about having a goal for a walk. I like to mix it into shopping or mailing a letter or something. I find a plain walk just plain boring. I need a goal or a task to do. As for firing the kiln without me there, the person needs to just push the on button. I've already loaded it up and it pre-heated yesterday. The major issue is there be someone on staff at the school in case a fire breaks out. it won't, shouldn't, but that's it. Potters working at home with kilns in their houses (or apartments!) just stick around and check on it every so often. It just does its thing.

jazzmegirl Hi! I found Beck in February and it has seen me through several diet try-outs. I have a foodplan I like now and while it is rough at times, I have been able to stick with something for 11 weeks. Definitely not anything I was able to do pre-Beck especially these last few years. I had diet burnout. And was very pessimistic about ever losing weight. Beck helps you find your way. I believe twilit tera follows her own plan as does Billblueeyes. others follow other plans. beck helps you understand why you go off any plan, why you self sabotage why you just give up on the verge of success. I need both: a plan that works and beck to help me work it, oh and this place to voice frustrations and triumphs! Hope you join us. Beck doesn't work by reading it, it only works by doing the daily exercises. All the best!

twilit teraSounds like some good Halloween fun is happening tonight! Would love to see the brain dip! I was all read for mid terms last week and half of them weren't last week but this coming week. I am totally fried. happy the market is over so I can catch up with my work and soon R&R. I wish the same for you!

angelmomma210 Well still waiting for that outcome eh? Sorry to hear that and especially sorry to read of your a-fib. Glad you are not going to the cermony even though I am sure you want to but you cannot risk your heart health! This stress is not doing you any good at all. Glad you are taking steps to take care of yourself.

kuhljeanie Sorry to read of an adverse reaction to the medication. ugh. You've been going through it for a while now haven't you? I hope things are getting better...!

Thumbs up Sunday

Diet Coaches - Spent most of Saturday rushing to get some outside chores done before the rain - but it never rained. Needed six brass #8 wood screws (7/8 inch) to reinstall two door hinges - Voila - a great excuse to quite working and take a walk to the hardware store. CREDIT moi. That should be a very weak [ CREDIT moi ] since going to a hardware store is rabbit to the brier patch.

Robin (RobinW) - Kudos for OP food and for some unplanned exercise. Yep, that treadmill needs to come out for the winter. Funny how a duvet hanging on it blocks it away. Maybe the first step is to put away the duvet, LOL.

onebyone - Yeah for a profitable market day to end an over-the-top week. Good luck planning your professional route for next year. Yep, when this tired, it's no time for long term planning.

angelmomma210 - Sending supportive thoughts for you and DH as well as for you guys and your friend who lost her three girls. Lot of stuff weighing on your heart these days, hope you manage to keep your sense of balance.

shrinkin - Kudos for stocking the house with good food. Will race out to get some Ambrosia apples - think I've had them but don't remember. Only two weeks until your DS's wedding sounds like real soon now. Good luck staying sane.

Tera (twilit tera) - LOL at zombies with "brain dip." Sounds like a fun party.

Amie (jazzmegirl) - Great start to have the Beck book. As you read the first days you'll see that you have to choose a diet (and a backup diet). As onebyone mentioned, I started Beck after I had already lost my weight and was continuing on my maintenance plan. (Actually, I had skipped doing a "diet" altogether and lost my weight, slowly, by starting out with my maintenance plan.) The Beck principles have been crucial in helping me to stay on track with my eating plan and exercise plan as Sabotaging Thoughts creep in to suggest that today is the day that I don't have to be mindful. Finding a Diet Coach is one of the stumbling blocks of the Beck plan - but this board serves that role for many of us and solves the problem. Hope you choose to pursue Beck and come back here often.

Readers -

Good Morning

onebyone~ do you spend alot of time during the winter painting? Enjoy your sunday off! If your hubby thought "salad is what food eats" is funny he will probably love the comedian I took that from. John Pinnette! He is hilarious! He has been fighting the bulge for years, and his whole routine centers around his eating, exercise etc. I think my favourite after the salad, is.....he doesnt do "ups" like push ups, sit ups chin ups. Because ups defy gravity, and gravity is a law and he doesnt break the law. He likes to only do "downs" sit downs, lay downs, boogie downs, and chow downs. I love him....we pick up his dvd probably once every 6 months.

Bill~ Yah! for getting last minute jobs done around the house before the rain didnt come. I should probably do that today too. hmmmm about the duvet.....I can come up with umteen different excuses as to why it isnt put away. Right now its a dust cover. K, but on the plus side, the blanket that was ontop of the duvet is put away! Does that count?!?!? No, I know.

shrinkin~ KUDOS for recognizing the thoughts "If no one sees you eat it, it does not count." I know exactly how you feel. Just remember that you will see, and really you are the only one that counts.

tera~ how did the halloween party go?

I didnt get the dvd player figured out. I officially feel old We had to call my stepson to come and figure it out. I had it all hooked up fine, but we were missing a button on the remote to change the tv to dvd mode. I thought maybe it was something like that.....but I wasnt sure and was getting very frustrated. Stepson came to the rescue, brought another remote that had that one little button on it.

I ordered a new kitchen gadget that finally arrived yesterday and Im thinking its going to one of my new favourites!! Its a julien peeler thingy! I ordered it from pampered chef. I juliened a whole zucchini last night, sauteed it in a bit of olive oil and garlic....OMG! it was delicious!!!! I love it when I find something that helps make veggies taste amazing! http://www.pamperedchef.com/our_prod...ategoryCode=CE Way cool!!!

Today we dont have much planned....a nice sunday paper read at starbucks. Then who knows! (might find a place for that duvet)

Have a great day everyone!

Good morning, Becksters!

Saturday
OP Food
OP Supplements
Planned exercise

Going to take it as easy as possible today. Need the rest.

The party last night was a blast. The older kids had built a "Haunted Shopping Maul" in a couple of the classrooms. There was a cake walk, crafts (we built our own tombstones for one), a screaming contest, a "dieing" contest, and a costume contest. (Bruce and I won in the adult category.)

The brain dip went fast. There wasn't much there I could eat. Besides the crackers and dip we brought, there were some granola bars without nitrates or anything artificial, and that's about it. Sorry, we didn't get pictures of it, but we did get pics of about everything else.

Aimee: hi! Welcome to the thread! I think that, no matter what plan you go with, Beck is an excellent companion program. Beck makes no restrictions. She doesn't even have a list of preferred diets. She just expects your diet plan to be a healthy one.

My plan is based on YOU: On a Diet. Nothing is completely off limits, but I do try to limit fats and refined carbs, and choose unsaturated oils, (preferably with Omega-3's) over any other fats. I also have a chemical limitation - too many synthetic food additives and salycilates and my mood plummets.

To keep myself aware of what I'm eating, I keep a journal. I don't count calories, but I pay close attention to my motives for eating (only hunger counts as a legit reason) and to eating slowly and finding that moment when I'm sated. The only exception to the only eating when hungry rule is when I know it's been several hours since a meal and it's about mealtime and I'm coming up on a time when I won't be able to eat, like being in class or close to bedtime.

Exercise is important to my plan and my journal has been really helpful. I've been able to review it during times when I've been discouraged and regain motivation or find out what I did wrong.

I hope you find the right plan for you, and hope to see more of you soon.

everybody: Be well, all.

ps. would you believe I almost forgot to weigh in today? Down another 3 pounds and change from last week!

Default Sunday report

Evening, coaches!

Saturday was a good day. Was within 100 cals of target and everything consumed was a good choice with no overeating. CREDIT MOI for that.

Decided not to do pool workout today because limping from left knee. Hope it is minor problem and will be better tomorrow. Plan for pool in the am.

Food on plan so far today, but toughtest time of the day is after dinner especially home alone.

Twilit tera-Wow for the 3 pounds down!Kudos for the healthy eating!

BBE-A walk is a walk is a walk...even if it is to the beloved hardware store! So, big credits to you!

RobinW-I don't think I "do Ups, either". LOL. I do think you get points for getting that blanket off the duvet ...but only if you did it as the next step to the treadmill...not because you were cold! Love that peeler. May have to look into that...you always have the best ideas!

onebyone-Yay for 90%! Kudos for the "SO it's a beck OH WELL to this deviation and put it behind me and move forward". Yup, keep marching forward.

ing for the sound of angelmomma and kuhljeanie. Hope you are both doing all right out there!

Back to some chores. Oh well.

Post week 11 day 7 Sunday night

Good Evening Becksters!

I slept in to a decadent 10am this morning. Ah... Sure beats getting up at 5:30am as I would have had to do if I had been going to the market. My friend and I decided to not go today based onthe weather report last night and the report was wrong, it would have been a great day to go but I happily spent the day chasing down supplies for my art projects and doing my homework: visiting an artist studio who had their open house today. Boy was I jealous. I so wanted to have a studio in that building. Alas, the building is up for sale and I'll bet it gets converted to condos or something. Doubt the artists will be there that much longer... We have no industrial spaces in this town. Never was a factory town or anything, just government. Lots of suburban areas. One of the artists was a woman I knew from university. Since I last saw her she's earned a PhD and this year had a successful show of her work in Los Angeles. We even reviewed her work in my class last week. I just didn't put the name to the face. She immediately remembered me and asked me if I was still doing my "little crafty things". I said yes, without embarrassment though I felt smaller than she is in her Star Artiste status as if late. I am genuinely happy for her success though. very nice to hear that can happen to someone from here. When I knew her she was working on an art history Masters and was not making art at all. Wonder how that changed? She told me to put my email and # in her book and I did. I hope I get a chance to talk to her about this stuff. Such a mystery to me the whole "making it big" thing.

Food today was off again. This time too little of it. Ran around and neglected myself. Ate too little. This week, starting with the new week tomorrow, I am getting some exercise in. WATP dvd's if I have to, but I am doing something 4x this week. And it only counts if I get myself to sweat. (you'd think there'd be a sweaty little icon wouldn't you? hmmm.)

So off to school in the early am, turn the big kiln on, unload the small one and reload it and then back home. Figure out what I need to get while I have the rental car then return the car then do my Tuesday homework and my Wednesday homework (I hope I get this far!). My birthday is coming up, on US election day, so CNN keeps mentioning it everyday: 20 days until the election, 11 days until the vote... ugh. This year I am fully aware of how many days I have left in this, my 44th year. When I was touring the studios I felt wistful, wishing I had done my MA and my PhD and how come I wasn't making and pursuing art in my 20's? It really does no good to sescond guess the past. AS iof we can do anything about it. A more useful thing to do wiht these feelings is to realize that they are actuve signs of what I need in my life to be happy. I obviously want an artist space of my own, with other people. (It struck me that I would like to be in/start an old-fashioned 1960's artist commune! Funny. And the most charming aspect of the tour were all the couches and chairs in every studio. I could see the artists there, visiting wiht each other, commiserating. I so want that in my everyday life. I get it now through school but really want that to continue afterwards.)

Anyway I digress from Beck things but this is what's up with me. Wistfulness.

RobinW Now that you mentioned that treadmill I will be wondering if you've used it. Want to commit to each other, as you are a diet coach of mine, that we will both exercise this week? I am committing to you that I will do 4 workouts that make me sweat. I challenge you to use that once!
I find in the winter I want to hibernate. Since being in school my regular schedule is pretty different. Normally I am exhausted from xmas shows come January and I just take the whole month off... can't do that with classes. I do hope to be painting this winter though... I am getting many ideas lately for different things I'd like to try to tackle. I am most creative when avoiding that which I MUST do, things like, oh homework!

shrinkin Oh not happy to hear about a sore knee! No! Hopefully some rest will cure that in a jiffy! Was happy to read about you being OP and on target! Excellent!

twilit tera on the 3lbs gone! You are inspiring me to get moving again. I thank you for that. Glad your party was spooktacular!

BillBlueEyes Found myself in the Home Depot store today walking all the aisles looking for suitable plastic for one of the books I am making as well as something to make the covers of the same book out of. Chose replaceent screening for doors and windows and a too-expensive-but-wanted-to-get-it-today 18" x 24" sheet of acrylic plastic. Got brass wire and 16 gauge (really wanted 14 gauge but they were out) galvanized steel wire for the frame for the screening for the covers of this book. Complicated but should be the right thing. My backup material is.... lace. Then spent many minutes imagining what I could do wiht the various ornate moulding I found down another aisle. And the aluminum flashing...hmmm... and the aluminum tape.... Too many things. I did get exercise walking the floor of that big box store. Kudos moi for that.

Thumbs up Monday

Diet Coaches - Ate OK at a potluck. CREDIT moi. Ate crumbs of a spice cake while cleaning up - even as I ignored the whole slices of cake and whole cookies. Oh Well. This crumbs thing is a pain - it's painful to even think of watching a grown-up snarfing down crumbs like a 4 year old. But I was annoyed that so few people were helping to clean up that my sane thinking was thwarted. So it was more like emotional eating than acting out childhood eating. Any which way, gotta get on top of that.

Robin (RobinW) - RE: "Busted" - Gently retracting the Kudos for removing the blanket from the duvet, LOL. (There is a precedent for this. HRM Queen Elizabeth II retracted the honorary knighthood from Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe and from Nicolae Ceauşescu of Romania for the perception of untoward behavior.) By the by, is duvet pronounced to rhyme with Chevrolet or with Corvette? That isn't a word in my daily vocabulary.

onebyone - LOL at getting exercise walking the aisles of Home Depot. BTDT. Interesting thoughts about future directions as a producing artist. Glad that you're working the issue of not dwelling on what might-have-been.

angelmomma210 - Waving. Sending supportive thoughts for you and DH as your saga continues.

shrinkin - Ouch for that left knee - I also hope it is minor so that you can get back to your pool. Kudos for all the on plan eating.

Tera (twilit tera) - Congrats for winning the costume contest as well as down another three pounds.

Readers -
"tip!
If you find you're self-critical every time you make a mistake in your eating, you'll undermine your confidence. If you eat something you hadn't planned to eat or if you mindlessly eat standing up, for example, beware of overly harsh sabotaging thoughts. Make sure you tell yourself something similar to the following: This is hard, I'll get better at it. Next time, I can ..." Beck, pg 76.

Default Monday report

Morning coaches,
Well, Sunday was close to OP, about 200 cals over. Eating mostly healthy...had 5 servings of veggies and 5 of fruits along with some chicken breast. Credit MOI. Meltdown a bit after dinner. Had some Quaker Minitreats that pushed me over the calorie limit AND after the fact noted they are relatively high in saturated (but not trans) fats. Processed food, what can you expect? Oh Well. Note to self: next time read label first. That is what is known as planning.

Tired but will head to pool after finishing this note. Knee better this am. Fluid seems to be gone from it and not limping. for that...just have to take it easy with the flippers today so it does not return.

Weigh in day today: Down 0.5 pound. Pretty measly, but better than up. 4 week average: 0.25 pounds (eew), but 8 week is still a solid 1 pound per week. Seems I hit the dreaded plateau phase, but I think I am coming out of it. Good news: Tried on some pants that are two sizes down from start...they are wearable..not perfect, but wearable. I need to ID a NS goal as the ole scale has been really unreliable (wt has varied by 5 pounds this week).

onebyone-WooHoo for sleep-in! Ouch for comparisonitis but kudos for using it to sort out what is important for your FUTURE. Knowing what one wants, believing that you can and then working for it is how it happens! Just like with diet, you gotta think, believe and act.

BBE-Kudos for eating well at the potluck. Ouch for annoyance generating return to crumb snarfing. Guess I have gotten used to seeing my old self and other adults pursuing crumbs and the little bites left while cleaning up; I didn't ID it as childish. My vote on Duvet is for chevrolet.

RobinW-Ok, now onebyone has thrown down the gauntlet. You know how I love competition. LOL. ing for your rejoinder (BBE-another 25 cent word). LOL.

All right, I have to get moving, but before I go... to twilit tera, kuhljeanie, angelmomma and all other Beck readers and posters!

Ok.....I was sitting here having my morning coffee, watching Robin Mead wrapped in my blanket. Read onebyone's challenge, read the retrackted kudos and shrinkin's comments. The duvet is off the treadmill (piled someplace else) AND the treadmill is unfolded!! Your on onebyone, I will commit to 3 treadmill sessions (unless its nice outside) I'll hit the streets instead!

I'll check back in later........
