Congrats, Dr. Pxlkitty! What a great treat to go on a cruise for your 40th. I had a great 40th, but a trip would have been great!
Still trucking along here... My husband asked me tonight how my weight is going. Luckily I was able to say I'm still within about 4 of my all time (post-IP) low. Hurrah for me. Meeting a friend at 5:15 a.m. to run in the morning. She hasn't seen me in a year. Problem is I need to leave by 4:50 to meet her. I need to go to bed!!! Talk with y'all later. Keep chugging!!!
I am so proud of you for even contemplating exercise at that time of the morning... Please let us know what your friend said, or if you just decided to sleep in

This week at the gym, I'm gonna start working out with a new trainer... my former trainer is quitting to go to nursing school... I really liked her & will miss her, but I'm excited about my new one... she's probably the most sought-after trainer there & she approached me to offer to work with me!.. I already know her pretty well, she's my Zumba instructor...
I'm glad to be back amongst my good IP buddies... missed y'all a lot... congrats to all for doing so well while I was AWOL...
We missed you too! Sorry your parents drove you bonkers on your vaca. I think that's pretty normal, though. I can take parents/in-laws in "doses"... but we are all used to living our own lives and doing things our own way once we are adults. I think that's hard for parents to remember. I'm sure my son will feel the same way about me someday.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on how carbs make you feel. Whenever I consider cheating, I always think of how I would feel later. I can remember too well the sugar crash... I never did well with that. Just focusing on that is what keeps me so faithful to the program. The thought of being allowed to eat carbs in Phase 4 scares me, actually... I guess I'll look for things that are low on the glycemic index (is low right? - ha ha) so that I don't get as much of that. Let us know how things go the next few days as you get back to the IP routine.
So... getting up this a.m. wasn't too bad, but I'm already feeling it a bit. By the end of the day I'm going to be exhausted. I'm a 'stress waker' so since I was supposed to get up at 4:45 a.m. I actually woke up around 4 and couldn't get anymore sleep. Should be better next time. We're meeting again on Wednesday to run.
She was really impressed with how I look. Unfortunately she's gained a bit over the last year. She had lost over 100 lbs on WW a year or so back so she's feeling bad about herself. We didn't talk much about IP, but she talked about how her confidence is down. It really is sad and reinforces that I need to stay focused. Luckily I've never had 100 to lose, but I know how it feels to weigh more than you want especially if you've lost it before. Been there, done that. I'm not on phase 1, but here's to another OP day anyway. For me it just happens to be a maintenance OP day.
Good luck on WIs today. Dr. Pxlkitty- you weigh in today, right?
Hi everyone. Very excited today. I booked a cruise for my 40th birthday... We are leaving the day after my birthday. My parents/brother will be in the cabin next to ours, and we are going to the Bahamas. The balcony is shared...
We leave from Baltimore, so we don't even have to fly. I have never been on a cruise. Never been to the Bahamas... I am SO looking forward to dressing up, wearing a bathing suit, the list goes on. YAY!
Oh I am soooo jealous, I so want to go on another cruise. maybe I will start saving for my 50th... the Bahamas are so nice I would love to see them again... so which cruise line did you go with? I am so excited for you.

I wake up on the week days at 4:45 and walk my dogs before work. I got into the habit of getting up early when my dad's dog came to live with me. she would nose me until I woke up... then I started delivering papers and had to leave my house by 3am... never again, even though I need the money there has to be a better way of getting it. I actually enjoy walking early morning, hard to find others who like walking that early, but every once and a while one of my friends will join me. we use to walk as a pack with about 5 - 7 dogs and 3 of us... miss those days. I know how your friend feels my goal is 101 lbs but I am in the 70s lost, hopefully will hit my 3/4 goal next monday. As it is a holiday in Canada I won't get a wi this week. Also have a new coach next week, I think she was on some kind of leave and is back, I am hoping she is a good one. Not that I really need a coach now, things are very routine and am getting scared to actually be finished phase 1... just the scary thought of the unknown... Lucky it is nice to hear from you and I am glad you are doing well in maintenance... that is what I like to hear. Have a great week all.

We are going with Carnival. Reasonable prices, great deal (parents/brother got military discount, we got shipboard credit). The kids day stuff is all included (wow!), and the babysitting at night is only $6 per hour in the kid center. I'm sure my mother will want to stay with my son at least some of the nights, and I'm sure I will want to go to bed early on the days where we have excursions the next day.
I've never been to the Bahamas. Never been to the Caribbean. Not sure how that ever happened, but it just hasn't.

Yes, I weighed in yesterday and lost another 2lbs. It put me at normal BMI officially.. How exciting!
I know what you mean about being a stress sleeper. If I have somewhere important to be, I always wake up several hours before the alarm and can't get back to sleep...
I'm glad that your friend could confide in you about how she is feeling. Just seeing you be so successful might be the motivation that she needs. It's great that you are meeting with her to do something outdoors. I am guessing she might be more interested in the program after she researchs it herself. When I first heard my friend talk about it, it seemed "drastic and dangerous"... then I started reading. After a few weeks, I announced to my husband that I wanted to go to an orientation and learn more. I had to do it on my own terms, though... and I had to be ready.
Congrats on your maintenance. The thought of maintenance scares me, but I know that's eventually spend most of my time so I guess I had better get over that.
I won't say maintenance is easy, but it seems mostly livable. You guys continue to inspire me, so I'm on the board just about every day. It is an obsession for me now!
I'm hoping incorporating more exercise will make life a little easier. We'll see what happens. Maybe if I tone the jiggly parts I won't want to come on to lose more in the fall. We'll see. Thanks for your continued support.
2RIDE, good luck with the new coach. I delivered newspapers for a while as a kid. I'm glad I don't anymore. There was this one doberman that used to scare the crap out of me.
Dr. Pxlkitty, congrats on the WI yesterday and the 'normal' BMI. After I posted here I saw it on the daily thread. I do think BMI is a crappy measure, but it gives me comfort knowing I'm at least healthy according to the numbers. I hope it makes you feel good.

Hey Lucky! i'm just curious... could you tell me what the daily food is like on maintenance? are there still tons of rules to follow? I know the deal with all the other phases, i just have no idea what maintenance is supposed to be like.
In a nutshell, maintenance is phase 3 with a complex carb added at dinner and a fat at lunch. So you have basically a phase 3 breakfast, lunch is salad/veggies/protein and you can add a serving of fat (real dressing?), dinner is veggies/protein and complex carb (sweet potato, whole wheat pasta, whole grain bread, etc.) and a snack (yogurt, nuts, protein...). And salads all around.
Of course that isn't always what I'm doing, but I guess the cardinal rule is to limit combinations of fats and carbs. So you have some fat at breakfast and lunch and limit it at dinner. Of course it is harder than it sounds (for me), but isn't too bad. I've gained a little (3ish?) since ending phase 1, but I'm watching closely to make sure I don't get out of control.
They tell you to have a cheat day per week and follow with a phase 1 day. I make mine more like phase 2 than phase 1 and I don't necessariliy do it each week (even if I should). My problem is (this is one problem on a huge list of problems mind you) having a cheat day that is a full day. I'm still trying to figure out how to make it work for me.
I do great with breakfast and lunch during the work week since I typically pack my food. Sometimes the dinners are a little flakey, but even though I sometimes combine fat/carb at dinner there are plenty of times that I have no carbs at dinner. I don't want them as much anymore.
Congrats, Laura. You have done SO well!!! How low are you going before transitioning to phase2/3?

WOW LUCKY CHICK! Your input is so helpful. I've been reading and trying to absorb all day and your nutshell approach really has brought it all together for me. I hope... Smile. I begin tomorrow morning.
I'm making my zucchini spaghetti tonight to go with meatballs and sauce. I can't imagine using regular spaghetti again. I've kind of grown (very) fond of the zucchini. Smile.
Question, in that we have to have the carb at night... can that carb be a whole wheat bread serving rather than potato or pasta? Thanks for any help you can give me. Smile. Kathy

thanks for the info! i started phase 2 last thursday. my coach said i wouldn't lose as much in this phase as others because i'm a vegetarian and my proteins tend to have a few carbs in them, unlike meat. so far, i've lost .2 lbs in the last 5 days. not great, but as long as i don't gain anything i'm fine. i have another 9 days before i can switch to phase 3. sooo soon!!!

I am sooo looking forward to Phase 3, but I am terrified of Phase 4. Do others feel the same way? I found myself staring at greek yoghurt yesterday.

Yes! Phase 4 is scary to me, and it's kinda vague. But this is the plan that I have come up with. I am going to follow the instructions for phase 4 (at least as far as I understand them), and keep track of my calories, and monitor my weight, and see what happens. If I gain then I know I need to cut back, if I keep losing, then I need to increase.
Since I am a numbers person, I need to have some numbers to go by, at least until I get more comfortable that I am not going to gain.
I am worried that I am going to gain then have to go to Phase 1 over and over again, and that is not what I want to do. The prospect of cheat days, while exciting, worry me. I am afraid that I will lose control and it will turn into a cheat week.
I like Lucky Chick's explanation of Phase 4. Phase 3 breakfast, Phase 2 lunch (+ a fat) and regular dinner (+ a carb). That is what I was thinking, even though I don't think I will always add the fat to lunch or the carb to dinner. In phase 3 I don't have a fat for breakfast, I use fat free cheese. It has less calories. And if I have yogurt, I have the low fat, low carb kind. Old habits die hard, I guess.
now that i know what phase 4 is, it also makes me nervous. i really like phase 1 because i don't have to do any work. everything is planned out and i didn't have to think about anything other than what packet i was going to have for each meal. ugh... why is eating and staying thin so hard!?!

I hope what I said, isn't what made you nervous. I have a tendency to make things over complicated sometimes, but that's how I figure things out.
Phase 1 was so simple. Phase 2 was pretty simple. I simplified Phase 3 for me by only giving myself a couple of choices for breakfasts. For Phase 4 I plan on limiting my choices for carbs to two or 3 items, at least at first. Probably rice, whole grain pasta, or whole grain bread. I don't know what to do with lunch yet. Maybe cheese or regular salad dressing. As I figure it out, I will try to add different things. Just not too much too fast.
Ahhhh... Soooo nice to read the last few posts as I feel that there are other people in my boat and I am not alone at sea in the 'what do I do in Phase 4'... thank you to Lucky Chick and Brandam for the breakdown of Phase 4 meals... I have decided that I have to treat Phase 4 with the same strict 'no cheating' mentality as I treated Phase 1 for the same period of time that I was on Phase 1 (at least) and hopefully by then it will be so habitual that I won't have to think about it as much and it will just come naturally. That is to strictly follow the set menu of big breakfast, protein salad lunch, carb veggie dinner and carb snack. I will attempt to verse myself on having soup for supper as this seems to be what is recommended... Anyone know of any good spots to find phase 4 recipes- at least to get started? Until I know what to look for in 'normal' recipes? As for the 'cheat day'... kind of confused about that one... but I think I would like to use it for a date night with my husband??? Then it's kind of set as to when it is... and I can enjoy my meal 'out'...

Here is what is posted on the phases thread:
d) Evening:
- As many vegetables as you want: in a soup, raw or steamed. Soups are best in the evening.
- A plate of slow-carb foods: 0.5 to 1 oz. rice, pasta, lentils, semolina, dried beans, quinoa, potatoes, etc.
- Go easy on the fat when preparing dinner (see below). Use no more than 1 tablespoon of oil.
- Optional: some lean animal protein, because you don’t really need to have meat twice a day. At the very most, you may have 3.5 oz. white fish or 3 oz. lean ham or deli chicken, a can of plain tuna or seafood.
- For dessert: 1 serving of yogurt, 1 fruit or 1 serving of stewed fruit. Some recommend that you have fruit as a snack. You may have a fruit if you want, but you don’t have to. Comment: You can switch lunch and dinner and have your carbs for lunch and proteins for dinner. As a rule, avoid having fat with your dinner. It’s bad for digestion and sleep, and it promotes acid reflux at night.
Also, it says to add a FRUIT in the afternoon or a protein packet. The fruit seem to be another option for the daily snack.

I liked this list of slow carbs.
I think it all comes down to glycemic index. Yay for South Beach! They included this list... Looks like whole wheat bread/whole grain bread is considered low, but I would look for the highest fiber/highest protein value you can find and eat that.
Google "south beach diet glycemic index" - the link won't work here.
I just found these two kinds of bread yesterday and bought a loaf of the double protein bread for my hubby and child.
