Making a potato salad today. Its the first one I've made this year so will be a treat. I'll just have a little of it. I'm serving it with grilled chicken and a veggie. Doing a little laundry today too. Had to run to the store. Boy were the campers on the road. Lots of camping places around here. And of course with the riverways lots of people with canoes on the water this week end.

I got another new book from Amazon yesterday...this one is on the Paleo diet. I am eager to read and understand it. Saluting the end of music and drama camp with a fuzzy navel. I am all kinds of tired, and I hope I sleep really well tonight.

Got the grandson last night and he will stay until Wednesday night. So far we are having fun. School starts for him next Monday...I am so sad!

Will check in later!

Hi ladies,

Back from the houseboat. We had a wonderful time. Mostly just floated in the lake and ate a lot. Of course we took too much food. My GS was pretty good, what can you expect for a 2 yr old. Now back in our routineI guess.

Ellen I can't believe school is starting soon. My DD didn't even have much of a summer. She started going back to work in the classroom and has an overnight retreat this week so it is really over for her. I will have my GS thursday and friday day but bet I have him while she is gone on retreat for the night.

Toni,I thought about starting the 17 day diet too. That first week is so hard for me. I have to do something though.

Crystle, what day was your anniversary. Mine was the 28th. 38th years together.

Off to figure out what to do for these fever blisters. I can't seem to get rid of them. I have never had them in my life until last year and now I have them and can't get rid of them. Have a great night,

I don't know why but this summer I'm having a hard time with this dang heat. In the afternoon I feel sick even with the air running. If I have to go to town I get sick in the air cond. car. Oh well only one more month of this and I can gripe about the cold.

Solly- Your vacation sounded so good. Still not back on healthy eating here. Hope something helps those fever blisters. Getting older is so hard on our bodies.

Ellen- Can't wait to hear about the new book. Have fun with the GS....

Have a cool evening and sleep good..

Good morning, just looked up an address to mail a card to a friend so thought I would get on here. Getting ready to go to the orthopedic doc about my torn miniscus.Of course, it is not bothering me now. I hav been fighting a killer of a headache for 24 hours. It has progressively gotten worse through the night even with asprin. Thing is I never have headaches. Unvelievable for me I know. Getting ready to take something else before I leave.

Toni, the heat has been a killer. I love heat but you can't stay out in it. Maybe it is too much for your heart. Try to stay cool and not sick. I know what you mean about the dieting. My pants are so tight I can hardly breathe. Got to do something.

Ellen, hope you are having a great day.

Got to run. Talk to you tomorrow.

Congratulations Solly Thirty eight years is awesome. Our day was August 1st.

Toni...I am not liking the heat this year either. We are using window units and it just never seems to get cool when it is in the triple digits. It is 103 right now..errr.

Ellen...you get brownie points in heaven for loving on all those babies.

((Everybody))

Love and hugs,
Crystle

Hey everyone! Today is the last pool day...school starts in our county Monday...in some counties around us it started this past Monday! I hate that kids don't get a summer anymore.

I have had my grandson since Saturday. Yesterday we drove up to a park in the mountains and he and Tom swam in the mountain lake. It was an almost perfect day...except the Grammie forgot he gets car sick and the curvy mountain roads did him in...we almost made it to a stopping point, but he got sick in the car. We stopped at the Appalachian Trail center, Walekski-yi, and the guys there were so helpful and sympathetic. We changed his clothes, cleaned up the car and headed out with plastic bags...thankfully we did not need them!

I better go get prepared for today!

Talking Helloooo

Well - I went to the doctor Monday for a "fresh start" on my medication and health in general. Since Drew died I just haven't wanted to care about anything... and I finally decided that if I was going to have to keep waking up, I might as well feel my best while I'm here.

My A1C level was actually decent (probably because of roller derby, certainly not because of good eating!) at 6.4 - but he wants it under 5, so back on the Byetta shots twice a day.

My Cholestorol and Triglycerides were high - low fat diet with fish oil added to increase my good chol.

He told me he wants me on 1200 calories per day - meat, veggies, fruit and water only to drink. If I do any grain servings it's few and whole grain.

I got a return appointment for 4 weeks - and he said he wants me down 15 pounds in those 4 weeks. He told me that the first month is easiest (Duh, I've had more first months than I care to acknowledge!) and that it is an easily reachable goal for the first month. We shall see.

Then he said he'd have me in a size 8 in a year if I did what he said... HAHAHAHAHA!!! He obviously 1.) is a man. 2.) is NOT an OB/GYN. 3.) has never birthed a 10.3 pound child... you could SKIN these hips and they're never going back in a size 8.

I'm not hung up on the number on the scale really - although I do tend to get scale obsessed because I'm trying to see how much I lose, not because the number itself bothers me. I want to be below a size 14, regardless of what the number on the scale itself is. But I don't want to be a flabby 14, I want to tone up so I know that will make the weight higher because of muscle.

Either way - today is day three and I'm doing great! I don't know if I've lost anything but I know I already feel better. Less bloated and miserably full feeling all the time.

I hope everyone else is doing great. I don't check in here often because I have to post from work because it's just too much to try and do it on my phone! So I rarely get here - but I lurk frequently and I wish you all success

Hello all. This week is going fast. Can't believe its already Wednesday. We need to go grocery shopping and will go at night because its so far and so hot durning the day. Its hard to plan meals around the heat. I need some salad stuff. I made a macaroni salad yesterday evening with whole wheat pasta. I think it turned out good.

Crystle- Are you able to exercise with this heat?

Ellen- Awwww poor GS. But bet the swimming was great for him and especially with his Grandpa.

Beth- Its so good you're getting a handle on your health. You know I wish my doctor would at least try and help me with my weight. We have such little health care in this rural area. And my heart doctor is 3 hours away. You can do this.....

Well I'm going to finish my coffee and go make Steve some lunch.

Default Good evening ya'll

Errr it just ate my post. Perfect for an already not so perfect emotional kind of day. Hormones I guess. Days like this make me batty, like I am not crazy enough already.

Toni...I am exercising once or twice a day depending on the day. I also walk ten minutes on my off days. Tonight it is still pretty hot..101 at 7. Not sure but gonna try to get out around 8.

Beth...you are so gonna do this. You can do anything you set your mind to. You are one tough cookie.

Ellen...I bet you had a blast with the little one.

Solly and Mercee...hope ya'll had a super day.

Dance show is starting.

Love and hugs,
Crystle

Last pool day went well...my older daughter came with my granddaughter, and a couple they are friends with who also have a 2.5 yr old daughter. They all just left a few minutes ago. I am pooped! I seem to have caught a tummy bug...and I feel pretty drained. So we skipped potluck tonight. It broke my heart to send my grandson home with his mom tonight. His too...he cried and cried. His mom was not too happy that he was not happy to see her. It was a great few days...so sad school is starting Monday.

I scrubbed the car out again. Tom said it smelled pukey today. I hope I got it all!

I think tomorrow I will just chill. I need a break. Been on a constant roll for three or four weeks now!

Hope everyone is doing well...gonna go read. (tho I SHOULD clean the kitchen!)

Hi ladies, another do nothing day. Still fighting this headache and sort of a sick tummy. I did pick all the flowers today. Took me 2 1/2 hours to do so. Spent most of it talking n the phone so it wasn't too bad.

I will have my grandson for the next 2 days. Looking forward to it. My nieces from out of town are coming in this weekend so it will be fun going to my great nieces ballgames and spending time at the pool.

My husband and SIl are going fishing for the weekend. So it will be a girls weekend. Looking forward to it.

Ellen, sorry ypur Gs got sick. That is horrible but glad you had a good time. Our kids have another week to go before they go back.

Toni, hope you can get to the store in better weather. It is just too hot to eat. How are you feeling?

Crystle, we are only 2 days apart. How many years for you guys? Sounds like you are doing good with your exercise.

Beth, good to hear from you. I am so proud of you that you are taking steps to improve your health. You are such a strong person. I know you can do it.

Off to see why I can't balance my checkbook. I hate this stuff. Have a good night.

Still moody today but not as bad as yesterday. I think I'm having trouble dealing with some stresses in my life right now. But this too shall pass.

Solly...we have been married 16 years. Sorry you are feeling poorly.

I made roasted okra for dinner. Boy was it good! You wash smallish pods, and dry them, trim the stem a bit, but don't cut it off, then put them on a greased cookie sheet. You can sprinkle them with spices, so I used curry powder to go with the rest of the dinner. Put them in a preheated 450 degree oven for 15 minutes. Really good!

Tummy bug is a little better tonight...I think. We had tilapia, okra and eggplant more kozumbhu (yogurt gravy) for dinner.

I have a headache...maybe its lack of sleep since I slept so poorly last night. I may have to make myself a fuzzy navel!

Ok, I am about finished with the Paleo Diet book. Its very interesting and I am eager to get fully on board with it. He claims following the diet will improve just about any health issue. I believe he may be at least partly right... This morning my bg readings were better than they have been in a while, so I was encouraged. He backs up much of what he says with research. The one place I disagreed with him was where he was trying to prove that HIS diet is superior to other low carb diets. His research probably supports it, but his points to reinforce it were stupid. He claimed that eating a low carb, high fat diet would raise you cholesterol. And that the weight lost on these diets were from lack of calories and were water weight. I found that ridiculous when I know a number of folks who lost 50 to 100 pounds or more on Atkins. That sure is a LOT of water! And when I did Atkins purely, and I was eating fat and lots of it, my cholesterol was great. Now in his defense, Tom's cholesterol went up on Atkins, so there is probably some truth to his claim, but perhaps it is not true of everyone. I enjoyed reading about his research into the Paleo man's diet, and their analysis of fossils records, and of the few frozen bodies they have found. Eskimos eat a diet that is about 90% animal product, and easily half that is fat, but they have no heart disease. Once they started adding the white man's foods, ie grains and starches and sugar, they began to develop heart disease. His case against grain is strong, and one I can relate to. Getting off wheat made me feel much better, and yet testing shows I actually do not have a sensitivity to it.

The diet is simple, eat lean meats and seafood, and fresh fruits and veggies. Avoid starchy vegetables (potatoes, yams), legumes (includes peanuts and string beans) and all grains. He recommends using olive oil for your oil needs, and flax oil. Paleo man did not have a way to extract oil from plants. This was a good thing. Most vegetable oils have a very poor ratio of Omega 3 to Omega 6 fatty acids. The over abundance of Omega 6 in our modern diet is one of the major contributors to heart disease and health problems. He recommends fish oil (which I take) to help balance them back to what they should be.

Its all fascinating stuff. If you like to read about nutrition and its effects on health, I highly recommend it. And if you are looking for a diet that will help you lose weight AND improve your health, I think this one would be a good one to try. I can't tell you have much more mentally alert I am since I started moving in this direction. He says you can slowly make changes to move towards adapting the diet to make it easier, and you will probably see improvements, but to get the full benefits of the program its good to get on it fully as soon as you can. I am just about there. As soon as I finish up eating some groceries I have that don't fit!

The other book I am reading, The Vegetarian Myth, is also good. I barely started it, and will let you know what I think when I am done.

In other news, I FINALLY have a bottle gourd forming on my plants. Its growing fast. I keep hoping to see another one...and I even tried to make two flowers 'kiss' in hopes of helping nature along! Stay tuned!
