I am having my Bullet coffee while writing. Will have my eggs, bacon, greens and pinch of grated cheese breakfast in a few minutes. I'm going to work at getting a routine down today with my new plan. Will keep my carbs between 50 to 60 grams a day. If I get a good routine, I won't have to count.
I am keeping a journal of what I eat just so I will know how it makes me feel.
Liliann I understand about the fruit. I like the fruit too, but I've decided that at least for now I have to give it up. YMMV and you might be able to have a few berries in your shake, but I would never go a full serving. I was going to start putting some blueberries in yogurt or something like that but it was more carbs than I want to spend. You just have to learn how to make it work and sometimes it doesn't. You #1 goal right now is to get your bs down to the normal range an learn how to keep it there. I am speaking from my own experience there.
p.a. I've experienced that feeling to some extent when I would take DH glimiperide, but never to the extent you and Carol Sue have. You have to really be careful on that. Thank God you woke up and able to take care of it. What brand of yogurt do you use. Some say you don't have to count the carbs in yogurt, but my doctor says yes it is still sugar. IDK what to do about it. So I just haven't been buying it any more. Can't find low carb yogurt any more.
It's a full fat plain Greek yogurt...I like Oikoos and Liberte. Both are rich tasting without the 'sour' taste that goes with plain yogurt. I hated plain yogurt for years till Greek yogurt. I won't do sugar free or low fat anymore.
I've been feeling fine since the scare..but watching my levels more closely. I got complacent...
Trish I've switched up my breakfast to include 1 'fried' egg and 1 egg white, with 1 one pic of low sodium bacon along with some avocado and apple slices. Weird I know but it works for me .
Pa...glad to hear you are well..some scare.Hoping your week will be good.
Patty..thanks..Good luck with your plan. I am with you!! What is a bullet coffee?
Healthy..Thank you. Is there a home kit to watch the a1 count?
Thank you all. I started low carbng, tracking carbs at 50 or less.no fruits for me, just lc ones..also brought whey protein powder, thanks jlus. I am keeping a food journal, the old fashion way. Am a at home caregiver and checking fbs and it is 126 .which should I watch more? C1 or fbs meter? Thanks so much for your input.
Went over carbs, 73 !! But was busy shopping on getting low carb foods, shakes.brought frozen strawberries, avocado, limes, my digital scale keep saying err, way to much weight.. My diabetes med not ready yet, will call back Thursday or Friday. Have a great night.
Liliann - A1c is nly measured every three months. It goves you your average blood sugar over a three month period. There are home test kits, but I strongly encourage you to go to your dr every 3 months for bloodwork. The testing there is more accurate.
You need to begin a home testing regime of blood sugar. Most people test fasting, then usually 2 hours after eating to see how foods are affecting your blood sugar.
You REALLY should meet with a nutritionist/diabetes educator to get you started on the basics (covered by most insurances). In addition, do your own research starting with blood sugar 101 site.
As you learn and get better control you will see both weight loss and drip n fasting sugars and A1C.

p.a. it's good that you are getting some small portions of fruit into your diet. I am not much of a fruit lover, but I know I should have a few small portions.
Liliann, right now you shouldn't worry about the A1c. If you keep your daily glucose readings in line your A1c should be much better next time the doctor checks it. Some people say that 2 hours after a meal your blood sugar should not go over 140. Others say not over 180. It's important for you to check it to see if it's higher. If it is, something you ate at that meal spiked your blood sugar and it's important to identify that food as one for you to avoid. A very large meal will also spike your blood sugar, even if it's all healthy food.
I hope your doctor puts you in touch with a nutritionist who can tell you how and what you should be eating. It's hard to grasp all this when you are first diagnosed. We have talked before and I remember that you are a caregiver for family members. That can be stressful for you, but you also have to take care of yourself.
Liliann Why is it taking you so long to get your diabetic meds? Can you get it from some other pharmacy?
I agree with Carol Sue that besides seeing a nutritionist, you should do a lot of online research on diabetes. I've learned a whole lot on line. Also she uses her local library to check out and read books on the subject. The first doctor I had who diagnosed me said to me "Here's the diet I'm supposed to give you from the ADA, but you will figure out what works best for you". I did and kept my diabetes under control for a good 15 yrs. So it can be done. As my doc told me a few years ago, any diet will work if it is something you can live with.
Here is a website that has different recipes for making the Bulletproof coffee. I use coconut oil in mine, but may have to change that. It seems that CO causes diarrhea issues for me. I take Metformin and the 2 together causes havoc on my system. I noticed they recommend butter. I can't afford the range free products so I just use what I have.
Thank God my FBS is finally coming back down. Not near where I want it, but it is coming down. It has really been difficult getting it back down after using the Januvia. I'm riding out the reactions to the Metformin. I can go 2 or 3 days without any problems now and then wham it hits me so still not sure what it is. I may have to give up the dairy for a while to see if that stops it. My doctor said it could cause the problem.

Trish, I was thinking about how our blood sugar seems to get higher when we take certain meds. I'm thinking that psychologically we start to realize that we can eat more carb when we're on those meds. If we would just keep our carb levels where they should be we wouldn't need them. My blood sugar has been coming down too, and I'm finding I don't need the glimiperide as much. I want off that med so badly.
I haven't had any bowel problems in a while and I never figured out what was causing mine.
My blood pressure is improving nicely on the new meds, too. I don't notice a different. They say that high blood pressure really doesn't have symptoms. The first couple weeks on the new meds I was getting headaches. I never got headaches previously. I read that it's a common side effect and would go away after a while and it has.
Liliann, I was wondering how you're doing. I hope you can get things straightened out at the pharmacy and get on some meds. Even without them, I think watching your diet should help. If you can't get to a nutritionist, I think if you keep your starchy carbs low, sweets, bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, and your vegetables high, eat lean protein, there should be some improvement in your blood sugar. And try to go for a walk every day, preferably after your biggest meal of the day. Just get your body moving. It doesn't have to be strenuous exercise.
Finally back after several weeks ice cream eating.
Boy do I feel like crap. FBS was 197 this morning. Say what?
Enough of this. I'm back on the wagon.
Off to find me some celery.
Cindy out.
WTG Patty and Carol!
Lillian, Stay on the narrow road for now. Just knowing your A1c is that high will be highly motivating for you. When you're able to resume fruit, keep in mind that grapes and bananas are high sugar fruits, citrus is medium sugar, and berries, apples and melons are low sugar fruits. My body reacts to a banana like it's a candy bar. Focus on what you CAN have.

Cindy, I am so glad you popped back in here. This thread used to be busier but many people have dropped off. It helps when more people come her so we can have more varied discussions and suggestions that might help each other. We are all having the same struggle.
Isn't it something when a food (such as ice cream) just seems to jump in and take over your life? We all have that happen from time to time and it gets so discouraging when the blood sugar shoots up. I think if we learn that we can have a small portion and then put it back in the freezer, knowing it will be there when we want some again. Or, do like I do, stop for a single serve occasionally, eat it, then it's gone, instead of keeping it in the house where it can call my name. It's best if we can avoid it altogether, but that tends to cause us to feel deprived and can make the cravings worse.
I agree that we should focus on what we can have. DH and I used to like to share a pizza, but I can't do that anymore, unless I pull off the cheese and toppings and mix it into a salad, which I do from time to time. But when he gets a pizza, I can order wings, and while not the healthiest choice, they don't spike my blood sugar. I can still have something I enjoy.
I agree with you Carol, taking in some extra fat by occasionally eating wings is a low priority issue compared with the importance for us to avoid extra carbs.
I saw my shrink today and explained to her my diabetic issues and my tendency to rationalize, and interestingly, she encouraged me to view it like alcoholism, with no gray, only black and white. No sugar, 90 grams of carbs, end of discussion. It made sense to me, because there is a fair amount of alcoholism in my family. I feel very settled about it. Onward and upward! Uh, I mean downward (in weight).
Cindy That is interesting as that is what my doctor told me. He said 90 grams of carbs a day was good. Maybe I should think that way. Just got it in my head that I should be eating less. Maybe if I did what he said this would be much easier.
Hiya all..checking in...I am getting great ideas from you all. I agree with watercolor about up carbs. I am keeping,or trying to stay 100 carbs.so far so good. My fbs is 109, I see my medical doctor visit in Feb and blood test in January. Am walking plenty and my home scale is moving down!! No meds yet..and sure do not know what is going on..Thank you all..I will keep in touch!!

Cindy, I liked the analogy of considering diabetes like alcoholism. Alcoholics can't just have one drink on a special occasion and go back to sobriety the next day. I think of that when others offer me foods I should not be eating, such as sweets, and say "One piece won't hurt you." They would not feel that way about offering a drink to an alcoholic. When that happens I don't use diabetes as an excuse. I just say I don't care for any, or I'm not hungry. That way it's not open for discussion. It really surprises me that my daughter-in-law does that to me, as her father has diabetes and she wouldn't consider doing that to him.
Liliann, your FBS is not too bad at 109. Are you checking 2 hours after meals also? That will tell you if you ate something you shouldn't. I think your blood work will show good results! Keep up the good work!
Carol
Removing options is really helpful to me because I tend to rationalize my way to some very unhealthy places. Now I'm thinking that I may need to avoid other foods that I know I binge on. (Cheese comes to mind.)
Liliann
Congrats on your hard work! Isn't it encouraging to see results?
Pattygirl
I hear ya! Sometimes I used to do everything BUT what I was told. It feels childlike to just do what I'm told, but if it works, I'm there.
