Hello! I'm a newbie here. This is SUCH a great idea. I'm sold! I just started keeping track of my calories Feb 8, 2006. Last night I took my gf out to dinner for Valentine's Day and that took my total up to 2220 calories. Well, as high as that seems, after reading your posts, I took my total calories from the last 6 days and divided by 6. It came to 1785. Keep in mind I'm training for a half-marathon, so I run frequently. I then subtracted 1400 calories from the week's total, since I ran 14 miles over the 6 days, and that gave me an average of 1553 per day. I'm 23y/o, 170lbs, trying to get down to 140 as a long term goal. I think that's a good average for me and it really makes me feel less guilty about my higher calorie days. I'll definitely be back if you don't mind an addition!

Yep, that'll do it. But you know what? I don't typically worry about restaurant meals too much. We don't go out to eat that often, so when we do I simply try to make healthy choices, NOT eat the entire amount, and drink plenty of water through the meal and leave it at that.

Good luck with your plan, neighbor

Tara--2200? HA! I laugh at 2200 There have been days where I've closed in on 4000 calories (Chinese food is not very helpful in keeping the cals low ), but it's all about the big picture. I see people get so worked up about a high day here or there, and I just wish they'd realize that one day won't really make a difference in the grand scheme of things...unless you weigh yourself that night or the following morning, in which case there is undoubtedly more sodium in that much food, so you're likely to also be retaining additional water. With the calorie cycling, I'm all about the big picture now

As for me, I successfully avoided all candy yesterday even when I went to the grocery store after work. I bought some frozen egg rolls to go with the instant lo mein I made for dinner, so I had 2 vegetable ones last night, which brought my calories for the day up to 1204 (I also added regular mayo to my burger at lunch, so that bumped me up a little, too--darn those condiments!)...overall, a good day

As for today, I'm planning on having:
  • yogurt
  • Boca burger on wheat bun w/Miracle Whip
  • Healthy Choice smoked sausage w/2 more veggie egg rolls
That's only 840 calories, so I'll be sure to come back and add anything else I have later

Ok. Call me stupid but I never looked at this thread because I saw the workd cycle and thought, no not me! I didn't know what it was! I have been a calorie counter now for a few months and I guess I was a cycler too but just not on purpose and without knowing the true benefits of it. I would just try to make up for high calories later one day with fewer calories the next day. Awesome, I'll try it, conciously this time! So, you guys say it keeps you metabolism from settling and helps avoid plateaus. So does that mean it will also be easier to maintain when we get to that happy land of maintenence?

I would think so, as long as your average calories per day for the week is the amount you'd need for maintenance. Or, you could just have the same number of cals every day at that point since youwouldn't have to worry about plateaus! I haven't really thought much about maintenance since it's soooo far off in the future for me

Well, yesterday was an unexpectedly bad day. We had a "breakfast party" at 10am for a coworker's birthday, so instead of the yogurt I'd brought for breakfast, I had 2 doughnuts, 2 small pieces of this pecan pastry thing, and a sliver of chocolate cake I also had a whole bag of beef jerky after dinner out of boredom (not a huge bag--3 servings in the bag at 70 cals per serving). I estimated it all as best I could in Fitday and ended up with about 1800 calories for the day--not horrible, but higher than anticipated, and tons more sodium, I'm sure (especially in the jerky!).

And so, this morning's weigh-in brings me to the same exact weight as a week ago. Better than gaining, I suppose.

Anyway, here's today:
  • glass of V8
  • yogurt
  • Subway sub
  • 2 Subway cookies
Brings me to 1460 calories.

Today is going to have to count as a high-cal day for me. My son and I went shopping and picked up take-out Chinese for lunch, haha.

Chinese food has always been a passion of mine that I used to eat FREQUENTLY. But since most of it is so high in fat and calories, now it's only a rare treat. I don't eat it very often anymore, so when I do I let myself enjoy it without feeling guilty about it.

Ugh, don't get me started on Chinese food! When I was in college, I worked at Payless ShoeSource, and right across the parking lot was a big grocery store. Well, in that grocery store was a Chinese food counter, and they had the BEST food! I used to eat from there at least twice a week (and never anything healthy--orange chicken and emperor's chicken were my faves, of course WITH an egg roll and lo mein). No wonder I am where I am, huh?

Oh my gosh, me too. I love that orange chicken. And yes, I always had to have not one, but two, egg rolls. Lo Mein? Love the stuff. And my favorite dish of all time is War Sue Gai.

But these days I usually end up with the steamed chicken and vegetables or, when I'm tired of that crap and want some REAL Chinese food, I order the chicken chow mein. That's what I got today. But naturally I had to steal a few pieces of my husband's General Tso's Chicken, lol.

I LOVE Chinese food. My "rules" for the buffet are:
  1. Only one trip.
  2. Only one plate. (A person could potentially carry several plates during that one trip.)
  3. Half of my plate is broccoli that I pick out of the Chicken & Broccoli dish.
  4. I take two small pieces of the General Tsao's chicken and drizzle some of the sauce over the broccoli.
  5. No egg rolls.
  6. No other fried chicken from other dishes.
  7. No noodles.
  8. A few pieces of Teriyaki Chicken. (This isn't fried.. just cooked chicken with teriyaki sauce.)
  9. I get to have soft serve ice cream. Why? This is the ONLY time I get ice cream. We don't keep it in the house and we rarely ever order dessert when we go to other restaurants.
Lots of "rules"... but once they are memorized it isn't so hard to follow them. I really like how they've cooked the broccoli in the chicken and broccoli dish. Some times I am REALLY lucky and someone else has picked out almost all of the chicken.. leaving a LOT of broccoli.

Kimberly

This is exactly what I do when we go to the buffet. If I go back for seconds at all, I get only vegetables. Steamed, if they have them.

No egg rolls, no rice, no noodles, nothing deep-fried, basically the same rules you have
