Hi Everyone,

Zoe, I am sorry to read about your brother's death. My good wishes are with you and your family.

This morning, my DD did a half marathon for cancer. She wore a pin that held the names of all her loved ones who have/had cancer. In addition to me, is my mother, brother, sister, her grandfather, brother-in-law, and friend - she didn't include herself in the list, but should have.

This is a HORRIBLE disease.

The marathon and events last night and today were WONDERFUL. There were over 18,500 runners/walkers. Just about all of them were supporting some kind of charity. It was VERY moving.

Good Morning Girls!
Something is goofy with my cp this morning, I can't get any incoming emails but what else is new?
I'm going to put away my everyday summer clothes and drag out the winter sweatshirts, blankets, etc. I still can keep my window open at night but need more blankets.
Last library visit I took out only 1 mystery and 3 romance. I love thrillers, don't get me wrong but I needed a change for a few months. I like a good romance story if they leave out the mushy, sloppy, intimate details of sex, and I'm not a prude. The first romance I read was by Belva Plain called 'After the Fire' and I loved it. A really good story! Last night I read the 1st chapter of 'Runaway' by Heather Graham and it was round after round of sex. I put it back in my book bag, I won't waste my time finishing that book. I took out the mystery book by Lisa Gardner called 'The Other Daughter' and couldn't put it down.
Hope everyone has a good week, Monday morning we all usually redeem ourselves if we've been naughty over the week-end. I didn't make my goal Saturday on the September Challenge because of a small reunion with a relative I haven't seen since the 50's. (Peanut Butter Cupcakes)
Have a good one!

Eat This Carb to Prevent Stroke

Here's a carb you shouldn't have any qualms about eating, because it's loaded with a stroke-stopping ingredient: potatoes.
Whether you favor fingerling, red, or russets, spuds are loaded with potassium. And in a recent study, men and women who consumed the most potassium had a 20 percent lower risk of stroke compared with those who consumed the least amount of the mineral.
The Makings of a Mineral
The reason potassium has such health charms? Turns out the mineral helps lower blood pressure, an important risk factor for stroke. Potassium somehow softens the effect that sodium has on blood pressure, helping to keep it under wraps. And potassium may also hamper hardening of the arteries and the formation of clots -- more bad things that can set the stage for strokes. (Potassium is just one part of good blood pressure management.
Top Tater
How much extra potassium did the top consumers get in the study? If you had a glass of orange juice for breakfast, a quarter cup of raisins for a snack, and a baked potato for dinner (with the skin), you'd get an additional 1,600 milligrams -- an amount that would nudge you into the high-potassium group. Not getting your fill of this blood-pressure-friendly nutrient? Don't take a supplement; it's safest to get your potassium from food. Increase your intake with these spud-loving recipes:

Good Morning Friends,

It's a BEAUTIFUL Fall day here in PA. Maybe I'll go down to South Jersey & see my friend.

Ate too much over the weekend - need to go light on calories today. Did my 90 minutes at the gym this morning.

Have a great Monday,

Lynn

Good Morning, All...
Bobbi, oh, I agree about the "heaving breasts and heated loins" books! They are so, like, um, TEDIOUS! Gratuitous and pandering, for the most part, and they certainly aren't worthy of time! In my rapidly-advancing old age, I've decided that there's no merit to finishing a book, just because I've started to read a book!

PT/Zoe, hanging in there?

No words of wisdom or even of interest today. I had a lovely day yesterday, took Granny/Mom and my sister to meet a friend in Manitou Springs (scenic little town near Colorado Springs). The weather was perfect, and it was a really good day.

So, everyone, have a good Monday. Later, lovely ladies...... Be safe!

Good Morning girls,

Lovely weather here. cool and sunny. It's supposed to get back up into the low 80's but that still sounds like a nice day. You can smell fall in the air. Busy weekend. Worked friday and had to get up early Saturday morning to go to DGS's football game at 9. It rained buckets and we got some hail too. At least it clearned up later in the day. My son and DIL's church had their annual fair. It's quite large and they both had to work in the fair. So, hubby and I walked around with DGD and her friend and gave DGS a cell phone and turned him loose to hang out with his buds. I walked untill my legs were aching, so I think I got a good work out. Sunday morning I really wanted to sleep in, but my little doggie had nother ideas. My husband was up but for some reason he thought I needed to be also. Later that afternoon we went to watch DGD play flag football. fun weekend.

Z, so sorry to hear about your brother. DH and i have made the decision to be cremated also. No funeral, but a small memorial service a year from the date. Funerals are just so expensive and useless. Does your SIL have someone to help her? It's sad when the one left behind has never had to make important decisions. We made sure that didn't happen too. When my cousin died, her husband was left alone. Had never written a check. We decided then and there that we would learn to do the things that the other took for granted. I learned to pump gas and get the taxes done....hubby learned how to cook (enough not to starve) and go to the bank.

Bobbi, Can't take "romance" novels. if there is actually a story behind them, it's ok. Most are just repition and mush! UGH! has any one read "the help". It's about maids in the old south. Not too long ago though, they speak of Martin Luther King. I learned some things I wasn't aware of and felt a lot of shame that people could be treated like that.

Donna, I gave up guilt for Lent! REally though, too many books out there to read something I really don't want to read.

Lynn, yes, CA is a terrible disease. Thank your daughter for walking in the marathon, for me. Not a lot of CA in my family, but I just lost my dear friend to breast CA. I saw how horribly she suffered. And of course I deal with it at work all the time.

Karen, feeling better?

Rosie, Good luck with the Dr. appointment. Just keep doing what you know is the right thing to do.

Bobbi, Good advice about the K. But, too much K is deadly. I think it would be impossible to get too much through food though.

Isabella, where ever you are, You're missed.

Hello everyone! It is definitely fall here...no sun and very damp but the temperature is fine for me without a jacket so I don't mind. I actually like it like this.

I transferred another tape this morning, did a few household chores and then we went to Walmart. I did a stupid thing esp for someone on a diet. You can read about it in the food diary thread.

Dh says it is easier to walk without his cane now. He does complain more of pain these days but I think it is the increased walking. Doc said it would be that way but wants him to walk. He had PT today, came home tired and took a nap. Didn't think he'd go shopping with me, but changed his mind, but used an electric cart at Walmart. But from the store to the car he walked without the cane. I like him to hold onto it for now though..just in case.

I too don't like romance novels! I don't mind a little romance with my mystery but if it's mostly romance, yuck! I have SO many books right now I'm trying not to buy any more until I get them read, but I am continuing to collect names of those that sound good to eventually get. The one you mentioned, Bobbi, sounds good.

Sorry to hear about your brother, Zoe. We never thought of cremation as a way to save money. We do have our burial plots paid for so the kids won't have to think about that at least. Hopefully between our insurance and savings we will have enough for the rest. My thought was to save for each thing they would need to buy so the money would be there when it was needed, but now I wonder whether we will have enough.

Morning, all - many thanks for the expressions of sympathy. My brother was 14 years older than I (my sister is 12 years older) so they essentially grew up together with me not tagging along until much later in the game. I had a case of hero worship when I was younger, but that fizzled over time, and my brother and I were never close as adults. He was a dyed-in-the-wool sexist who thought women were put on earth to serve men, and that attitude survived all manner of changes (in the world). My sister remained very close to him all their lives, so she has taken this very hard - especially because he died before she could say goodbye. She missed doing so by one day. Well, I love my sis dearly, so have been trying to be there to support her through it all. As for myself, having spent so little time with him anyway - we disagreed about everything - it hasn't been especially painful, except for trying to console my sister.
I'm pretty tired - it's been pretty much a constant round of activity since my sis and her son arrived last Thursday, and then her daughter and husband and son drove up from Ohio on Saturday. They leave tomorrow, and while I'll be sad to see sis go, I have to say (selfishly) it's not been much fun because we've had no time to really spend together just the two of us. Lovely weather, though.
My eating stinks right now.
I can't tolerate all those sex scenes in novels myself. I have to kind of grit my teeth to get through the ones (and sometimes I just skip them altogether) in the Claire & Jamie novels, but in their case, there's a good story, so it's not as offensive. I agree with putting a book down when you don't like it. Whose got time to waste on crap writing?
After tomorrow, I'll be here more...I'm missing all of you.

Good Morning Girls!
Zoe...I think we all picked up a little friction between you and your brother by the way you posted his passing. Funny how you can have the same parents and one sibling would have a totally different attitude about life than you do. I have a sister who'd I like to strangle because she doesn't bother getting together with any of her siblings. When ever we get together, she's never there. We all entertained our relative that we hadn't seen since the 50's last Saturday and she didn't bother to show up. Geeeeeez!
We had more wind and rain last night, the hummingbird feeder gets watered down when it rains that hard. First thing this morning I made a fresh batch of hummingbird nectar and filled the feeders. We still have the cute little girls at the feeder, I say girls because the males are long gone with the Orioles.
I'm going to get started on reversing my summer clothes for winter. I have a huge closet down the basement I use for storing clothes out of season. The exercise is fantastic for my legs as it's a full set of basement stairs. Summers over
You all have a great day.

Hi Everyone,

Today, my challenge is the flourescent light in my kitchen. I figured out how to get the non-working bulbs out of the holder & what size bulbs to buy. However, now that I put the new bulbs in, they are not working. Once again I need to depend on my DD & SIL to help. I HATE being so dependent.

Zoe, my brother was 13 years older than I and my sister is 12 years older. My brother and I also lived in different universes. As a child, I adored him. We drifted apart as adults. However, during the 6 months that he was dying from pancreatic cancer, we got close. He died on 9/10/2000. Our family had just made it to the one-year mourning anniversary and 9/11 happened the next day.

Good Morning, All.....
Sort of melancholic postings today, yes? I'm very grateful (and very lucky) that my sibs and I are all close. The ages are 3-5 years apart, so we all grew up together except for my older brother and the youngest sister. Even with her, though, Tom and I were teenagers and would take her with us, and we'd pretend she was our baby. In those days, that was S-H-O-C-K-I-N-G, which we thought was great fun! We're lucky.

Have to hit the shower. Lots of running to do today...

Be safe, everyone!

Good Morning all,

Guess I should have said afternoon. Where did the day go? Busy doing lots of nothing. busy evening though. Kenzie has soccer and i will take her there while DH takes Chan to football. It's cool and beautiful here. wind blowing, sun out....

I come from a very large family, 8 of us. I think attitude seperates more than age. My youngest sister and brother are younger than my son. And, no, we were not very close when they were young. Actually, how could we be? Now that they have gotten older we are very close. I too wonder how children raised the same way, by the same parents, think so differently some times.

Mary, haven't read the food diary yet, but You know none of us are perfect. You will just continue to eat well....

Donna, you must have been the talk of the town! A baby at your age! Good fodder for all the old gossips. wonder what they said when they found out the truth?

Lynn, we're never too old to learn. Just watch what your DD and SIL do when they fix the light and next time you won't need help. Repair men probably get tied of DH and I standing over them watching. Oh wellllllll.

It's a beautiful day today! High 60s or maybe around 70 not sure but know that high 60s was predicted, seems like a little warmer though as sun is shining so nicely. We went to our retirees club brunch and enjoyed chatting with everyone. Then stopped at Walmart on way home as I recently ordered a watch online from walmart.com for Joe and he needed to get the bracelet adjusted. It was a little different than most watches (which is why he couldn't figure it out himself) but the gal finally was able to do it. It's one of those where you can set two time zones...and since his brother is in the Philippines he likes that.

After we got home I pulled a few weeds. It's still too wet to mow. I need to get to my housework now as didn't get much done before we left this am.

Interesting talking about siblings. My brother is 18 years older than I!! When I was born he would come in to visit mom and the nurses thought he was my dad! My sister is 9 years older than me. I have often not felt we were on the same wavelength....but as we get older communication gets a little easier. They are both really good people, but we see a lot of things differently. My brother is not online and not interested in anything different than his usual life and my sister is online but not often, just never got that interested. Then there is me that is online way too often! They have a hard time understanding that and I don't see how they live without the internet!

Good Morning girls!
We're headed into town for our annual flu shots this morning, going to stop and see MIL, pick up some groceries.
What's everyone doing today? I'm kind of bored, all the outside furniture is put away, garden is done except for a few lingering tomatoes and zucchini. I hate when I have to look for something to do. I have a walk in pantry in my kitchen, I think I'll re-organize that when I get back from town. Ho-Hum! I need some excitement in my life, ya think?
Wish we knew about Isabella
Take care!
Oh, I forgot to share Crabby Maxine's quote for the day. "With each passing week, the days are getting a little bit shorter. Kind of like me." Ain't that the truth!
