Hi Jo!

I'd better clarify myself here about the "diet" being vegetarian. It is really "mostly vegetables". The printed diet that the doctor gave me as a starting point has small portions of things like cottage cheese and lean meats. Verbally he told me to include a lot of beans, etc. And the salad I make at dinner is filling up my family so much that there isn't that much room for the entree, which I eat too if I have any room (although it may be just two ounces of whatever).

Perhaps some of you were raised as I was in the 60s and 70s - way more nutritious foods on the dinner table than we see today. Eating like this is quite refreshing as it is actually how I was raised. We had a salad every night before our meal and convenience foods were rare, but I know not everyone was like that. We didn't even have a microwave until I was a teenager. I would get so excited because "Steph's mom made us chicken out of a box!"

My husband is a bit younger, and his parents were very young when they had him, so his mother is not that much older than me! And he was raised on more convenience foods. So, it is hard to find an ally in him because he wants mac & cheese, hamburger helper, etc. His daughter wants fried fast foods that didn't even exist when I was a kid (the McDonalds Happy Meal came out when I was in high school).

We bought a scratch and dent chest freezer a few years back from Sears (got them to knock off nearly $100 bucks on it. I just kept asking for more and more off and they kept agreeing.) I buy Turkey Hill (it's made in Lancaster -- pronounced LAN-caster not lan-CASTER, PA) when they have it 4/$10 per 1/2 gallon.
Okay, THAT DOES IT! We are not getting a chest freezer! My husband has been suggesting this and now I know exactly what it would be full of!

Congrats on your TM (treadmill?)!

Maui, I am very new in this forum, but WELCOME!

I'll go ahead and give my $.02. You are right in that many simply will not do what we know will work. I am on a plan already so I know I am not open to another plan, or a mentor relationship right now. But I am certainly open to discussions with people.

There is a big difference between male and female as far as weight and emotions. I love to discuss things like this.

Hey Everybody...

A big olde To Our First Man Maui

Cammie... How are you doing?

Wiffle... I reward myself everytime I lose 10lbs and it is always a haircut plus makeup/clothes...I stopped rewarding myself with food (always did that)...as little helpers...if I can't stop eating I drink 10 oz of water very quickly (no stopping just chug it!) before and after I eat, I chew gum, if I need fatty stuff I eat a small rice pudding (fills that craving) and if I need sweets I eat jello-fruit cup...

Laura... I decided in January that I wanted to stop feeling like crap and I wanted to get healthy...not diet or lose weight but get healthy and then the weight stuff would take care of itself after that and along the way...The one thing that has really surprised me was that degree to which my body responds to stress (fight or flight) so that is something that I will need to adjust my thoughts around...

Jo...HOW TRUE! At one point in my life I was looking to god for the answers to my life when my marriage fell apart and Elisabeth was 8 months old...So I joined the Mormon church (I was barely 25) thinking that they had the answers (I was young, immature and scared and didn't realize I had the answers in me and my relationship with God/Jesus and the Bible)...So when I tought that I screwed up eternity...I went the my family's priest (who baptized me when I was a babe...a lovely little old polish priest who drank too much of the sacremental wine)...And explained that I joined a different church and I was crying as I thought I would end up in ****/purgatory...and he told me that once you are baptized catholic you are "theres" for life...therefore...I could run around and join every church and it wouldn't matter.... Hey way to go on the TM ... I keep looking but I won't buy anything until I have lost more weight! I just run up and down my stairs and I am dancing because of the "perv"...I really resent that I have had to change my life so drastically! But such is life!

Clydegirl... Good you have tons of time to find something that you like, that is affordable and looks good! Yeah!

Susan... It is crazy what we women put ourselves through for the sake of familial relationships!

Diane... How are you doing? Hope all is well!

This is a special HELLO to all the ones that have come and gone from our little support group
Hope all is well for each and everyone of you!

Wiffle...this is dumb...but my main motivator is just getting to the next day when I wake up in the morning and realize that the day before was a really good day...that I did my exercise and ate right.....I feel in control and happy....

you know what? I can't find BlueBunny here (SoCal) I would like to get things in single or even dbl serving sizes..it would be easier for ME...but at least I am learning to PORTION!!!

ya know Kim...I DO want to be healthy...and I want that freedom that comes with feeling good and having energy .....but I ain't gonna lie...I WANNA BE THIN!!!!! I REALLY WANNA BE THIN!!!! I want to wear nice clothes and look good in them and be HOT!!!

DIANNE!!! please feel better soon!!!!

Jo...I LOVE the Jaws quote...it just sums it all up for me!!

a long time ago I had a friend who would say "Waiter! Bring me some cole slaw and another leg!!"

years later I read it in a book "The Stand" ...a guy is trapped in a jail cell...most of the world is dead...and he is starving and trying to pull the leg of his dead cell neighbor over to him to eat...and thinking to himself "Waiter! Bring me some cole slaw and another leg!!"

Hey all, just a quick post. I think expressing all of that really helped. I feel better! I know that this is all good right now with the kids' activities. I just need to squeeze out a little alone time!!

Have a great week everyone!!!!

Oh, one quick comment: Jo, I'm with you. I LOVED the 80's! I still listen to all of that good music, too!

Hi Everyone!
I have tons to catch you up on, but I only have a few minutes before I take my daughter to the ENT. (Having a 2yr old at work for a half hour is a bit challenging.) Anyways, I plan to write more this afternoon.

Quickly - Jo glad to hear from you again. (As always, I enjoy your posts.)
Diane - I'm glad you're feeling better.
Laura - I'm glad you're with us, your posts motivate me.
SusanB - Have I told you that I look up to you?
Maui - Welcome...I think you might enjoy this forum. I have only one request. Many of us "know the truth" about how to lose weight. We may have difficulties implementing things in our lives and therefore find this forum a safe and supportive way to help each other with our journey. As long as your posts are supportive - I welcome them. (And yes, I've had enough people tell me what they "think" I need to hear. It was the opposite of helpful.) I don't mean that I know everything...(I have a ton to learn as seen in my 5 day challenge.) I just know that I receive information better when it's presented in a caring, supportive manner.

With that, I guess, I also need to say thanks to everyone here for your support. I haven't lost weight (or any thats noticable), but my attitude has improved SO signigicantly that I will.
Gotta go.
Cammie

Cammie, you are very sweet.
Are we all quiet with humility? I don't know how to take a compliment very well. In fact, I'm fairly frighten of being an example You go ahead and be better at this than me, OK?

Oh ... back to an appropriate answer ... I asked my friend who told me to say "Thanks, I'll try to be here for you." ... my son said "She can't look up to you, she's too tall."

I chose ... Cammie you are very sweet and I will not have ice cream tonight on your behalf

Hello! I would very much like to join your support group. I have read many of the posts on this thread and can see that this is a nice place, with big hearts, and lots of common sense.

My real name is Teresa, but my Sweetie gave me the name Pita and it seems to have stuck. I’m 41-years old, divorced, and at 40 began a brand new life. I got my GED and I’m now in college getting my diploma for marketing managment. I want to re-enter the work force, which I’ve been out of for over 20 years. I have a man that loves, understands, and respects me. I have a terrific teenage daughter that I want to set a healthy example for, and show her that it’s never too late to begin again and take control of your life. This weight is the biggest obstacle hanging on to me and keeping me from the complete happiness and success I so want in my life.

I found this board the other day while Googling diet info for my “yet again” attempt to get myself to goal. I have been overweight my entire adult life. For the last 20 years, I have been at least 50 to 100 lbs. overweight. I have done many diets where I’ve lost a few and gained a few. We all know that story, right?

I’m not going to dwell on the past mistakes and failures. It is what it is. Today is a brand new day. It is July 4th and this as my Independence Day!!

My plan of attack to reach the healthy weight goal that I so crave is as follows:

1. Get my hefty bottom back to Curves, workout with all the might I have, five days a week, no excuses!

2. Join a weight-loss support group, called TOPS. They meet once a week for a weigh-in and support discussions. I have been to TOPS in the past with some success, and I believe accountability of this type will be beneficial for me.

3. My eating plan will probably be somewhere along the lines of the YOU-diet and South Beach. Right now, I’m reading the “You on a Diet” book and really like the common sense approach it takes. I’m currently working on getting out of an Atkins mentality that I’ve been on for the last year and getting no results.

4. Enter everything into my Fit Day. I have the program on my computer and no excuse not to use it!

5. Become an active member of this forum; so that I may share in the highs and lows of losing weight, be supported and supportive, and not feel that I’m alone in the battle.

6. Stop making excuses! Stop feeling sorry for myself! Stop the cycle of destruction!

Pita says NO more!!

Pita!! You have an awesome plan there. Congratulations on making that first step. And, please do join us!! There are some fun people here and it helps to have the support. To me, it really helps talking to people around my age. Although there are 20 year olds out there that need to lose weight and have lots to share, the 40 year olds understand this "special" time of life!!

Welcome!

Pita.

Happy 4th of July everyone.

We went to Fair St.Louis last night at the Arch. The Goo Goo Dolls and Lifehouse were doing a concert right on the banks of the Mississippi. Very good show and then we watched the fireworks. Good time had by one and all. Our wee town does a big show every year and we stay here for the 4th.

Enjoy the day girls.

Happy 4th everyone!

I hope you are all having a nice day. We stayed up way too late last night and had a few drinks too, but managed to be up and outside for our neighborhood's 4th of July parade. It was mostly kids on decorated bikes and ride on toys, and some on foot, and some grownups. Very cute. I'm glad I hoisted myself out of bed to see them, and once they passed the house, we hauled our bikes out and joined in.

Welcome, Pita! I so enjoy Curves, and I go at least three times a week usually four. Since I have a compulsive personality I try not to speak in absolute numbers, but three times gets me my Curves Cash so it is always at least three times!

I admire you for returning to school. I have been toying with that notion myself, but it is such a huge commitment! So when I see someone else doing it, I am impressed and inspired. Good for you!

Hello Everybody...

A big olde How Do You Do Pita420 Wow! Good for you what a terrific game plan! TOPS not familiar with that but I think that it is a support group like WW...Well on your game plan and I look forward to chatting with you!

HAPPY JULY 4TH

Well how goes the trudgery of daily life?

Wiffle...You seem so into Curves and I am needing something...Since that poophead Peeper-Burgular I need something that gets me out...Susan and Laura suggested that I dance in the house...been doing that but I think that being stuck in the house is getting me down!

Clydegirl......Glad to hear that you are having a relaxing time...nothing like fireworks to lift the spirits!

Diane... So how are you doing? anything new on the shopping front?

Susan... Is fitday the on-line journal you use? I am looking for a user-friendly on-line journal!

Cammie... Thanks to you...you are always there with a positive word and encouragement!

Well tomorrow I weigh in again and I am definitely sleeping better and not waking as much...so who knows where the weigh-in go! I don't think I have lost anything as I feel the same!:
