May Exercise: Spring into A Habit

Welcome!

...To the May exercise thread! We're trying to make exercise a habit and give ourselves some accountability!

In this thread, we're setting the number of MINUTES we want to exercise for the month -- whether it's walking or swimming or housework!

We're also tracking how many minutes we have exercised as a group!

Please first post your goals and then add your minutes (for yourself and the group) and get some support and accountability!

If you want to join us during the month -- GREAT! Just let us know how many minutes you want to exercise in what's left of the month!

You're right - both mine and my husband's doctor say that exercise is the best drug you can give yourself.

Let's see - two water aerobics classes @ 55 mins per week - 440 minutes, plus 2 half hours on the recombant bike - 60 mins per week - 320 minutes, plus at least one hour per week lap swimming - 320 minutes

Good heavens, 1080 minutes per month?

Okay, let's give it a shot.

Sue

kayleystar 04-28-2006 10:15 AM

I'm going to try again for the 800 minutes. I failed in April, because I didn't exercise nearly all month...but I'm just going to TRY AGAIN! :)

Xena2005 04-28-2006 08:04 PM

I am not going to make my goal either. I let work obligations and being down because of it keep me from being vigilant at getting my 30 minutes in. I will set my goal for 600 again this month and try to do better this time!:)

MsCrockett 04-28-2006 08:21 PM

240 minutes here Wyllen

NotTheCheat 04-28-2006 08:28 PM

I want to try and go just a bit more than last month, so I am going to say 1300 minutes. I need to be careful because I am going on vacation for a week this month and I have no idea how that is going to effect my exercise schedule.

kayleystar 04-28-2006 09:46 PM

Way to GO, Nancy! You're kicking BUTT in the exercise department!!! :D

ZedAus 04-29-2006 04:11 AM

I'm going to give myself another month at 1800 mins. I would LOVE to set my target higher, and I am going to be over 2000 this month, but I don't want to push myself just yet. I know that doesn't sound as though I'm challenging myself, but I think that I am still hesitant after making myself sick with over-exercising, so I want to learn to listen more to my body for another month before committing it to anything more. 1800 gives me an average of 60 mins a day (30 mins on treadmill and 30 mins on bike). I have a rest day once a week, but that can be taken up with the three or four 20 minute sessions on the home gym a week. If I do daily fitness with the kids that will be a bonus, and if I walk with hubby that will be a bonus, but I don't want to commit to those as they don't always get to happen.

So... after once again going on and on... my goal is for 1800 minutes.

I hope we can encourage some more people to come and join us. I wish they could see the benefits that it has to report in here and also to receive encouragement and support.

Nancy - The BEST thing to do on a vacation is walk! You get to see more AND you get to add up your minutes. You may find you do more minutes then than usual. You have done REALLY well for April.

Kayley - You are SO close to reaching your goal this month that even if you don't quite make it, you definitely don't need to beat yourself up about it. You had some hard times and you STILL exercised, even though it may not have been as often or as hard. You still showed commitment.

Sue - It certainly quickly adds up, doesn't it? It sounds as though you get quite the variety in. I am pretty boring with what I do. I would LOVE to swim, but I really am not game enough to wear a bathing costume. Just too much loose skin to scare the world with at the moment.

Wyllen - Thank you for setting up this thread each month. I can't wait to hear about your 'idea' for motivation (or something like that) that you mentioned on the main thread. I'm sure it will be a good one and I would love to help out in any way I can.

Great goal setting everyone!

Take care,

Zelma

dolfingirl2000 04-29-2006 10:57 AM

I'm back and I'm going to make the 1200 minutes this month! I don't care--I'm doing it or I'm going to cry.

Good luck everyone!

ThisGirlsLosing 04-29-2006 07:24 PM

super girl!!!!

Well, my goal for April was 1440 minutes. As of today's workout, I'm 119 minutes short. I have no plans to do any exercise tomorrow as Sundays are my rest days. Though it may happen that I do go out for a walk or something. Even if I don't exercise tomorrow, and eventhough I didn't meet my goal, I already have worked out 321 minutes (5:31 hours) more this month than last, so, I'm declaring April a victorious month.

I'm not exactly sure why, but I'm not getting myself to the gym. I think principally cuz I'm feeling emotionally raw and being at the gym feels exposing. So, I've created my workouts for May to be home-friendly. Perhaps I can hit the gym in June, after I have found a new job and have some distance from my ex.

Also, I've been doing some more reading and research on improving fitness faster. So, I've design my workouts to reflect my new understanding. So, here we go!

Cheers for a kicka** May!!!!

brandnewme 04-29-2006 08:17 PM

I'm going to make my goal, but barely, and only because I've really pushed myself this last week. I don't want to push myself this hard next time around, because I'm really starting to feel the effects and I just don't want to injure myself and take myself out of commission.

So, I'm going to stick to my 600 minute goal for May. Only, this time, I'm actually going to exercise more than 2 weeks out of the month :P

KristasMom 04-29-2006 11:27 PM

ZedAus -
I'm not the biggest women in my water aerobics class, or in the lap pool, either for that matter.
I'm scared of the loose skin, but I'm a ways from there yet.

Sue

Heather 04-30-2006 09:21 PM

Hi all -- Good going so far, and one or two new faces. I think we are low in numbers from early this year, but I think that the new year brings a lot of people with resolutions...

I have been scarce on the boards because this has been a busy month, and May looks to be just as busy. I'm going to keep my goal of 30 minutes/day -- right now that IS a challenge for me, and that's the important part for me.

So, 30 min a day is 930 minutes for me!!

But look out in June, I'll be busting out exercise all over!

Heather 04-30-2006 11:00 PM

A New Exercise Challenge!

Okay, I was going to wait until tomorrow, but Maria Lucia blamed me for getting her to excercise (WHEEEE!!!) and I decided to roll out the new challenge now! I posted this in the 300+ thread:

----------------------------

I would like to announce a new exercise Challenge. HEY, where's a drumroll smilie when you need one????

It's really a continuation of our existing challenge, but maybe it will get a few more people out to exercise!

I would like to announce the 100K Minute Challenge. Yes, as in 100,000 minutes. Yes, that just over 1666 hours, or just over 69 days -- nearly 7 weeks of exercise. 6 million seconds if you prefer.

Yes, I challenge our group of 300+ ladies to exercise for 100,000 minutes this year. The good news is, we don't have to start from scratch. Oh my, no. Here is where we are already:

January: 9418 minutes
February: 11,129 minutes
March: 15,917 minutes
April: 10,700 minutes (so far)

So far: 47,164 minutes.

The question is not IF we can make it. The question is how early in the year we can get there.

Ammi asked if she needed to set a monthly goal to post in the exercise challenge. I think it would be great if you would, but it's not required. I think the only rule should be that we start today and move forward. No need to go back and add old minutes (and who needs em anyway???)

So, who's with us??? Just add 20 minutes here and there, as Maria Lucia said, and we will all get there together!

Here's how it will work: just as before. Post your minutes, add to the monthly total. I'll track the minutes by month until we get to the 100k!!

I haven't decided if we should have a separate thread, but I don't think its necessary. I'll post the updates in each Monthly thread...

So, what do you all think????

azcyn 05-01-2006 12:30 AM

Hi Ladies...is it May already??? Ok I did not make my goal in April BUT that is the most exercise I have done all year! I am starting to like it! oops did I say that? hehehe Anyhow summer is here in Arizona and its getting into the 3 digits..100 degrees and that is where I shine. I love swimming!!!

I LOVE this new 100K challenge!! I think it is wonderful. And I get to be part of it..yeah!!

I think I will keep the same goal as last month... 500 minutes for me!

ThisGirlsLosing 05-01-2006 04:39 PM

Happy May Day everyone!

I did my 60-min bike session today. Yes!

Group Total (as far as I can tell) = 60 minutes
Please correct me if I'm wrong and missed someone's workout!

Noticed that I'm going to have to stop watching my DVD's while I ride and focus more on the workout. Now that I'm doing sprints on Mondays and a higher intensity on Wednesdays, the DVD is more distracting than not. I am putting a few playlists together for those days to keep me company as I focus on better workouts. Wish me luck!

Xena2005 05-01-2006 08:39 PM

Did my WATP's DVD for 20 minutes this morning.

GROUP TOTAL 60 + 20 = 80

kayleystar 05-01-2006 08:57 PM

Wonderful, Wyllen! I LOVE IT!!!!

kayleystar 05-01-2006 08:59 PM

Oh yeah...lol. Forgot to post my minutes for today. I did about 20 mins of walking that actually COUNTS. I was all about running around today, and I'm beat.
80+20=100
Triple digits already! :P

Heather 05-01-2006 11:31 PM

25 min for me-- walked dogs and back exercises

Kayley -- glad you like the challenge, hope others do!

Group total ~ 100 + 25 = 125 min

NotTheCheat 05-02-2006 12:00 AM

I did 30 minutes on the elliptical and 30 minutes on the treadmill. Each day it gets easier - on the elliptical I was able to keep my rpm's at about 50 for most of the time, while keeping my heart rate at about 140. Maybe next time I will try setting it to level 2? I am also now consistently at 2.6 on the treadmill. Maybe shortly I can get to 2.7.

The group total is now 125 + 60 = 185

ZedAus 05-02-2006 08:45 AM

Well, I did well as far as minutes went today, but I think I may have hurt my knee just a little too much. I have been jogging on the treadmill and my knee has been a little aggravated, but not for long. Today I jogged some of the laps with the kids (walked 4 laps and alternated with jogging 4) and our oval isn't in the greatest of condition. I have a feeling that trying to avoid the potholes is a little harder on the knees than just jogging on the treadmill. I still did my exercise this afternoon, but my knee is aching now, and VERY stiff. I will have to see how it feels in the morning before I decide whether I exercise or not. I'm a little angry with myself, but I really didn't know whether to just try and work through the pain. I think I may have been OK if I'd just walked around the oval. Oh well... let's just chalk that up as another lesson, shall we?

So... 30 mins treadmill, 15 mins laps of oval, 20 mins strength training and 35 mins on bike (little slower to 'baby' the knee).

Oh, I also need to add yesterday's 30 mins on treadmill and 30 mins on bike.

Personal Goal... 1800 - 160 = 1640 mins left of May's goal of 1800

Group Total... 185 + 160 = 345

Not a bad start, but hopefully we'll see more faces in here soon.

Take care,

Zelma

ThisGirlsLosing 05-02-2006 04:27 PM

OUCH Zelma! Sorry about your knee. I suggest RICE (Raise, Ice, Compress, Elevate). I hope you feel better! Oh yeah, and take an anti-inflamatory (like ibuprofen). Knee pain is so hard! :-(

I did my first round of weight lifting today. Used 5 lb (2.27 kg) weights...and feel like such a wimp! LOL I used to do all these exercises with 30 lb (13.5 kg) weights a few years ago and now look at me! ROFL. Then again, I did HAVE to build up to that. So, it's time to build up again - slowly but surely.

My totals today: 10 min warm up, 30 min strength training

Group Total: 345 + 40 = 385

Heather 05-02-2006 06:30 PM

Okay, so I'm on pins and needles over here cause I haven't heard from many people if they like the 100,000 min challenge idea!

I thought it would be a good extension of what we're already doing -- and I think it's fun to see these big numbers add up. PLus, I totally think we can do it! We've accumulated over 47,000 minutes in 4 months alone...

So, please tell me if you like the idea or not!

Oh, I LOVE it! Yeah, lets! :-)

And, again, THANK you so much for your consistency with the exercise threads! :-)

melissd1 05-02-2006 07:01 PM

Hi....Posted yesterday that I would love to join the May Excercise minutes challenge, but the post didn't get onto this thread. Is it too late? I just began dieting for the first time in my life and would love the support of others to root me on as will I do that with you all.

Hope to join aboard.

Melissa

melissd1 05-02-2006 07:06 PM

Group Total: 385 + 90 = 475

HippieMomma 05-02-2006 08:26 PM

Hi!

Ok, I had about 40 minutes yesterday and an hour today. So... 100 minutes of exercise for May. I think my personal goal for the month of May is 800 minutes. If I keep up at this pace that should be very do-able! :D

Heather 05-02-2006 08:55 PM

Melissa and Andrea (hippiemomma) -- WELCOME!!!!! Of course you can join!!!

Melissa -- it can really help to set an exercise goal for the month (# of minutes exercising). If you're just getting started, I recommend starting small, for a goal you can reach. Personally, I started with about 450 minutes -- about 30 minutes every other day. Course, others like to jump in hard and bold...

Maria Lucia -- *grin* I hoped you liked the challenge!

And hey, where is Valerie???!!!!

Finally, let's add HippieMomma's (Andrea's) minutes:

Group total ~ 475 + 100 = 575 minutes!!!

Look at that, we're almost at 10 hours already! And, I'm off to the treadmill myself.

NotTheCheat 05-02-2006 10:16 PM

Wyllen - Sorry for forgetting to mention it, but I love the idea! The only question is who will be taking the bets on when we make the goal.

Well, tonight I not only made it to 2.7, I actually spent a few minutes at 3.0! Since I had the treadmill on hill I couldn't keep it there too long, but I did it! I wasn't sure my legs would move that fast. So I did 35 minutes on hill setting 3 mostly staying at 2.7. I was also going to do weight training when I got home, and did about 10 minutes, but felt too tired after that. That brings my total to 105 minutes.

The group total is 575 + 45 = 620

Heather 05-02-2006 10:19 PM

heh. I'm game. Does that mean I can't bet myself??

When do you all think we'll make our 100,000 min goal??

nancy -- great job on the treadmill!!

I got in 65 minutes today --- dog walk, treadmill and more back exercises!

Group total ~ 620 + 65 = 685 minutes!

voodoo1 05-03-2006 08:15 AM

Hi, I made my 800 mins for April, lots of walking at my parent's house at the week end. I am keeping it at this level for the moment, time (for house work & the boys) and energy stop me doing more.
Add 60 mins walking today for me.
GROUP TOTAL 685 +60=745
MY TOTAL 60 (Aim 800)
:carrot: :carrot: xxsharon:carrot: :carrot:

ZedAus 05-03-2006 09:23 AM

Didn't go on the treadmill this morning as my knee was still sore. I just WALKED laps of the oval with the kids for 15 mins, which was fine. I then went on the treadmill, just walking at 4.5mph, for 45 mins this evening.

Personal Goal... 1640 - 60 = 1580 mins left of May's goal of 1800

Group Total... 745 + 60 = 805

:carrot: Great start so far everyone!:carrot:

Take care,

Zelma

azcyn 05-03-2006 09:45 AM

Morning Ladies...Posting my min for monday and tuesday...monday 10 min strength training and 20 min walk. Tuesday 30 min walk.

My total 10 + 20 + 30 = 60 min total so far

Group Total 805 + 60 = 865

Ok Wyllen write my bet down...we will see how close I am hehehe
Ok my bet is we will make the 100,000 mark by October 15

dolfingirl2000 05-03-2006 12:35 PM

Woo-Hoo! Finally got to the gym today and did 60 minutes. So the new group total is:

865 + 60 = 925 :bravo:

ThisGirlsLosing 05-03-2006 05:27 PM

Did 35 minutes of cardio today - 5 warm up, 25 fast paced, 5 cool down. Somehow it didn't quite feel like a workout. I think I need to increase the tension on my bike. Or maybe I'm just used to longer session. Who knows? :-)

Group Total 925 + 35 = 960

kayleystar 05-03-2006 07:58 PM

20 mins cardio dance this morning for me...

960+20=980

NotTheCheat 05-03-2006 08:45 PM

Wyllen - It may be a little ambitious, but I am going to say August 10 as my prediction on when we hit 100,000.

I did another hour at the gym tonight - 30 minutes on the elliptical and 30 minutes on the treadmill. For the last 5 minuntes on the elliptical I went up to level 3 - my first time adding some resistance. That brings my total to 165.

The group total is now 980 + 60 = 1040

melissd1 05-03-2006 11:01 PM

Hi everyone...

I didn't do excercise straight like I had originally set forth, but combined it totalled 45 minutes!!! Yea, me.

Our group total now goes as follows:

1040+45=1085

Thanks for all the welcomes!!!

ThisGirlsLosing 05-03-2006 11:04 PM

Well, I just couldn't stay away from the bike this evening...I was feeling like I didn't work out this morning by only doing 35 minutes. So, I did 40 minutes tonite.

Group Total = 1085 + 40 = 1125

If Covert Bailey is right (see my quote below), I'll be "cured" in a jiffy! LOL
