I'd been posting in another c25k thread, but I think i'll join you! I started last week and I just did my w1d3 run last night. This is my first real running experience. Before I tried once in a while but would feel so sick I thought it just wasn't for me. This time around it feels more do-able. Though I am scared of anything after week 3. LOL
I ran on the pavement yesterday and it definately hurt me more than running in the woods. So I'll stick to daytime running so I can go out in the woods.
If I ever make it to running 5k, that is to be the biggest miracle in my life!
Scarlett Thanks! The longest I went without running (since starting last spring) was one month and it was surprisingly easy to get back into it. I am thinking I am just not going to be that lucky after 6 months but it would be freaking amazing if you are right about the big loss in the first week. I get super motivated once I see the results.
Philana You can do it! I was NOT a runner, I got shin splints at the drop of a hat and was a weezer (but no asthma)... it just wasn't for me. I even hurt my knee in one of my attempts to pick up running but it wasn't until C25K that I made up to 18 minute runs!! I am the queen of the granny shuffle though so I am far from being an actual "runner" but hey, it works for me.
OK so I didn't make it out last night but I did at least find my ipod! Attempt number 2 will be tonight. Ugh I am so nervous. but in a good way.
Just thought I would share that after loading my ipod with my C25K podcast, letting it charge a little extra just in case and getting completely ready to walk out the door. I hit play and the stupid thing says low charge. Really? Ooooo and just now it finished charging. Off I go!
KayNicole - thanks so much for the encouragement. Today after work it's time for my first w2 run! Scary. Haha. Though I think the step isn't that big, so I will be fine.
Philana- I remember W2 being easier. I was thinking last night during my run that I forgot how many intervals there were in the first week. Since you have less stops and starts it just seemed easier to me. I can't wait for W2. Good luck on your run!
My knee was killing me last night. I think it was anticipating the pain before I even started. It was clicking during my warm up walk! I iced it when I got home and it feels good today. Time for anti-inflammatories and Glucosamine Chondroitin!
My conclusion is that I might have to add another day before going to Week 3. I'm gasping for air like a fish out of water by the end of the last 5 minute run, which is odd because my W4D1 was almost effortless, and today I wanted to quit in the middle of every run and had shin splints by the end because my form deteriorated into barely jogging. Blargh.
Side note: For those of you who treadmill-run, do you find your run goes differently depending on the treadmill you run on? We have two kinds at our gym and I'm convinced one is significantly different from the other. Or maybe that's my brain's way of justifying why tonight was so hard.
Insidethebeltway - I've taken MUCH longer to progress through the program. Just stick with it.
Today I attempted W5D3. I google mapped out a 2 mile course around my neighborhood, but only finished a little more than 1 mile. There were a number of factors contributing to my poor run. I'm just going to stick with my road course until I can do it a few days in a row.
Insidethebeltway I had to repeat a week or two my first time around. Breathing is always my problem too but once you found a consistent pace for my run and breathing it was better. I still had to really focus on slowing down my breathing and taking deep recovery breaths during those breaks.
Tonight is my W1D2 run. My husband is home from work tonight (which is rare) so I will have to be good and not skip my run just because he is home.
The cool perfect evening weather helped alot. I jogged 2+ miles. Have no idea of my time. Once I am completing this course consistently, I'll time myself.
Scarlett -- Congrats!! Since finishing c25k, I haven't been keeping up with the threads as much, so I am not sure if this is the FIRST time you completed it, but I KNOW how much you have been wanting to get there, and that is such an accomplishment. Really. Congratulations! I am really proud of you and happy for you! You rock!
Thanks Anonymously Yours My running has been a little all over the place lately.
I barely completed D3 than took 2 weeks off (tierdness from new low carb eating/SEVERE Sunburn/TOM/a few days to get back on track).
I went back to W5D1/2. Then I ran a 5k last Sunday where I ran 2+ miles (and practically ran the whole thing). Since then I've been working on D3. So it's going well.
I've always admired runners but I never thought I'd ever be fit or ready enough to be one. Then I heard about this program...and I feel ...excited. I'm nervous, but up for the challenge. You ladies are inspiring!
Unthinkables - goodluck, and welcome here I so know what you mean. I have tried running before but was always failing big time. This time it's going well. Though I went from week 1 to 2 yesterday, and thinking 90seconds feels that difficult I can't imagine going for 30mins ever. But.. the plan will bring me there!
So gals, how much resting time do you -need- do you think? I am thinking about doing a run saturday morning and then sunday evening... is that too close or not?
Unthinkables - good luck. If I can do it, anyone can. When I started in early may, I was dead out of shape, weighed 216 and never seriously ran outside in my life. Then yesterday I jogged 2 miles around the neighborhood and have completed 3 5Ks. For me the first workout was a reality check. I wondered "what have I gotten myself into" (I had already signed up for a 5k at this point). The name "c25k" sounded so warm and fuzzy, but it was HARD. Stay positive and keep at it. You're bound to have stalls and steps backwards, expect them.
Also you'll probably feel really tierd and zombieish during the first few weeks after running. ie spend the rest of the day dead on the couch. This goes away, you just need to get over the "beginning hump" I was fortunate enough to come across a "beginning running" article that warned me about it when I started.
I'd recommend signing up for a local 5k a few weeks away. I think it's best to run your first 5k before finishing. They just motivate you like crazy.
