CakeBatter -- Yes I weight train, have been for 24 years now, I was 28 when I started, do the math ... As a beginner you should start with compound exercises that work large muscle groups for 6-8 weeks or so. Compound exercises are exercises involving more than one joint and targeting more than one large muscle group, ex.: leg press or squats, chest press, barbell bent-over rows for back. Weight training with progressive greater resistance, has the most potential for lean body weight and raising your metabolism hours after you workout. Doing a full body workout 2-3x/week and start with 10-12 reps of each exercise doing each exercise 2-3 times which are called sets....Hope this helps, if you have more Qs just ask away...

Here's a good site : Weight Training 101

Finally! The scale has read 139 for more than a week - I'll take it! I am going to move my ticker and post here so I can be accountable.

Well, I'm finally down a couple of pounds since Monday. Normally I lose holiday weight quickly (like 6 lb in the first week) but it's taking longer this time.

Another good day! The quality of my calories was not good but the total was OK and I did exercise.

I'd really like to get a decent weights session in before I go to work at 3. It's been too long if I can't remember the last time I did any upper body.

Good morning!

I had another good day calorie-wise. Did upper body and was on the elliptical. I'm enjoying that first "on plan swoosh" but understand what it is and do not plan on losing this fast next week ... that's for sure.

Today, I'm going to walk to church. I'm not staying for the potluck after! I need to grab a few things for my lunch on the way home and then work.

Since it's so nice out, I think I'll leave a few minutes early and walk a few extra blocks. That may be the closest I get to exercising today.

Way to go Ilene! I haven't done so hot the last 3 days... no exercise... eating decent but not great... but my excuse is PMS! Although exercising probably would have been good for that! I'll make up for it tomorrow. I plan to start the c25k plan tomorrow! I'm going to Ohio to visit my family on Wednesday so here's hoping I can work in some runs/workouts and not eat terribly while I'm away!

Good work Ilene. Runners just seem so accomplished, don't they? I am in awe of them.

Four days in a row folks! I do remember how to do this.

I went through a bit of a spell when I would rather have chewed my own toes than have a salad. But the last few days, I've been really enjoying the lunch I take to work.

Ilene - well done!! I am getting back into running after 5 weeks off - only did two short runs last week as I felt my leg pulling a bit where I hurt it so didn't want to overdo it, but I'm going out again today and see how it goes.

Amy - WTG on starting the C25K - that's how I started. There's a brilliant C25K support thread in the exercise forum.

Susan - I have salads sometimes in the summer for my lunch - but I do get bored of them after about a month or so.

Well, I am 3 pounds down after my holiday and party binge. Only 15 to go.

I was trying on wedding dresses on Saturday and was very pleased to find that pretty much all the sample dresses in the shop were too big for me!! I think I have found the dress though, although I won't be buying it from here - I have found a website in the US where I can buy it for £400 less, and they throw in a free bridesmaids dress and free shipping!
