Height: No thank you.

Default stapling the stomach, thoughts?

has anyone here had their stomach stapled? I'm seriously considering it.
What about having your jaw wired shut, does anyone see that as a viable option?

I think I could live off milkshakes and stuff.
Thanks!

You need to learn to eat correctly, so having your jaw wired shut is not going to do the job. I haven't heard about stomach stapling in a long time. I'm sure someone here can advise you on that.

"Stomach stapling" generally refers to procedures that are no longer performed (even though some of the present procedures do involve staples/sutures on the stomach). If you're interested in weight loss surgery, the four procedures currently most widely performed are the Roux-en-Y (gastric bypass), Duodenal Switch (DS), adjustable gastric banding (Lap Band, Realize Band), and Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG).

Wiring your mouth shut would probably work temporarily, but I would imagine that as soon as you get it unwired and start eating normally again, you'd regain the weight. Further, it is VERY possible to stay or get heavier even on only liquids - after all, think about how many calories are in milkshakes, regular sodas, juices, etc.

I considered having my jaw wired shut when I was in my late teens or early 20's after seeing "success stories" on a popular talk show (I think it was The Phil Donahue Show), but horror stories, especially one in particular stopped me (I don't remember if it was featured on the talk show, or if I read about it later)people who died quickly of suffocation or later of pneumonia from aspirating (breathing in) vomit, such as a girl who died because she had to voimit, and the vomit having no where to go, came out her nose, and back into her stomach and lungs). She could have died immediately from suffocation, but cpr "saved her" and she was taken to the hospital but died of pneumonia weeks later.

I couldn't handle the thought of that possibility. I felt claustrophobic just thinking about it (and even had nightmares about it).

I don't think you could live on Milkshakes. You would probably be horribly malnourished. Plus could you really live your life with your jaw wired shut?

I can't imagine having my mouth wired shut. And the thought of drinking liquids all of the time makes me sick to my stomach!
(Having to do that for a week was horrible and that was just a week)

I would really rethink that whole stomach stapleing thing too....I do think that was old school. I think Jillybean gave you excellent descriptions of the most current surgeries. I would look into one of those if you are truly interested.

mgf~

I have to wonder if there are even any reputable doctors that would wire your jaw for weightloss in this day and age with all of the other options that are available?

I can't believe people actually wired their jaws. That is incredibly barbaric. And "stomach stapling" is so 1980s Oprah. You definitely need to research the modern surgeries...
