Well, I was gone for most of the day and have been catching up here late tonight. TOM finally arrived today, and as usual I have a whole new outlook again! Feeling GOOD, skin is clearing up and I'm positive again! Sometimes I find it slightly disturbing that half or more of my personality is just HORMONES!
I ate a bit more fat and junk today than usual (half a little bag of MnM's and half a convenience store hotdog-eww), but stayed well within my calorie range, so I guess that's okay. I was over my goal for fat intake, though, but I think that's okay from time to time. Sure don't want to get into a habit, though!
I haven't done my beloved yoga dvd for 4 days for various reasons, like accidently falling asleep when I put the baby down at night or waking up too late in the morning. Now my TOM is here and you aren't supposed to do inverted (upside-down) poses, which this dvd definitely has. Still, this afternoon on the beach, I did a couple of sun salutations, which are a series of poses that move from one to another, and include "downward facing dog", an inverted pose. It didn't seem to cause a problem. Maybe I'll do my yoga for weight loss dvd in the morning and see how it goes. OH, and by the way, when I did those sun salutations, I was able to actually jump from the "standing forward bend" to the "plank" position, instead of just stepping clumsily into it. I have much more strength in my poses than I used to have for sure! Even when I practiced yoga for awhile a couple of years ago, I couldn't do that! whoo hoo! And it was so fun to yoga on the beach with the late afternoon sun going down behind the clouds out on the horizon and the waves crashing and the sea birds flying low.
Karyn, I couldn't find that Baton Rouge link again, but you can check my previous posts for it again. Sorry, today was so busy for me and I just haven't had the time to do that myself!
How exciting that you now have your cardio cruiser! And I think it's great that you were out moving the earth around in your yard--that's a fantastic workout! And I'm all for exercise that serves more than one purpose! The best kind of exercise, to me, is the kind that is part of everyday living and getting things done. It's only modern technology and such that makes us have to find exercise to do just to keep our bodies working properly. There was a time that just our everyday lives would keep us fit! Anyway, sounds like you worked up a good sweat doing that yard work today! Good for you!
I really love fruits and vegetables, so I don't have any specific advice for you there. Just try sticking more in where you usually wouldn't and see if they start to grow on you. And try substituting a more nutritious vegetable wherever you can. Like when you make a ham or turkey sandwich, put on some raw spinach instead of iceburg lettuce and throw on some tomatoes and sprouts too and a little avocado or cucumbers. Actually a veggie sandwich with green leaf lettuce, red bell peppers, cucumbers, sprouts, tomato and a little avocado with maybe a little mayo or hummus, depending on your mood, is SO good. Try that out sometime. That's not too original, but I think you understand what I mean. I really can't think of anything right now, but I'll give it some thought for a couple of days and see if I can't think of something that might help you.
Wait! Here's a good one! The "
New York Goodwich" from
Fit for Life
by Harvey and Marilyn Diamond. I used to eat this all the time in the summer, because it was soooo good. 25 minutes to prepare. You need:
1 cup broccoli
1/2 cup cauliflower (optional)
2 tablespoons carrot, finely grated
2 tablespoons red cabbage, finely grated
2 tablespoons yellow squash, finely grated
1/4 cup Barbecued Onions (see below)
1 whole wheat tortilla, chapati, or pita
1 tablespoon mayonnaise
3 thin slivers dill pickle
1/2 cup of green leaf lettuce, finely shredded
1/2 cup alfalfa sprouts
2 slices of avocado
dash of salt
Prepare the vegetables
Cut broccoli into thin lengths, using only florets and upper portion of stalk. Break cauliflower into tiny florets. Place broccoli and cauliflower in vegetable steamer, covered, over boiling water for 5 minutes or until vegetables are tender when pierced with tip of shap knife. Combine carrot, cabbage, and squash, and mix thoroughly.
Barbecued Onions:
2 teaspoons safflower oil
1 small white onion, sliced
1/2 tablespoon barbecue sauce
Prepare the Barbecued Onions.
In a small skillet, heat oil. Add onion, and saute until it begins to soften. Add barecue sauce, and continue sauteing, stirring frequently, until onion is throughly wilted. Makes enough for 3 or 4 Goodwiches.
Assemble the Goodwich.
In hot
dry skillet, heat tortilla or chapati, turning from one side to the other until soft but
not crisp. Place on large sheet of plastic wrap. Spread tortilla with mayonnaise. Add a line of broccoli down center. Crumble cauliflower and place a lineof it on broccoli. Add a line of pickle, a line of grated vegetables, a line of Barbecued Onions. Top with lettuce, sprouts, and avocado. Sprinkle with salt. Roll tortilla tightly, crepe style, around vegetables. Wrap tightly in plastic wrap until ready to serve. Will keep for 2-3 days in the refrigerator. Cut it in half and push plastic wrap partially down, but leave one end closed to catch the drippy sauces. YUM! Serves 1.
(If using pita, heat in oven for a few minutes to soften it, and cut a sliver from top so pocket opens easily. Combine all other ingreients, mix well, and stuff into pocket.)
I'm telling you this thing is awesome!

Try it out!
