Just saw this on another thread and it kind of makes me wonder about all protein drinks now.
I was reading in Consumer Reports magazine about heavy metals found in protein drinks. The metals that were tested were: arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury. Two of the protein drinks that were found to have high levels were Muscle Milk and EAS Myoplex.
Muscle Milk Chocolate: 5.6 Cadium (Max is 5) 13.5 Lead (Max is 10)
Muscle Milk Vanilla Creme: 12.2 Lead
EAS Myoplex Original Dark Chocolate Shake (liquid): 16.9 Arsenic (Max is 15) 5.1 Cadium
WOW! Gonna have to check that issue out.
Consumer Reports, the respected guide for buying reputable products, has found traces of heavy metals in some protein supplements.
The products are popular among body builders, baby boomers, athletes, and people who want to skip meals with a high protein liquid shake.
An outside lab ran tests on 15 different protein drinks from ready-to-drink supplements to powder mixes.
All of the drinks had at least one sample with arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury, heavy metals that can have a toxic effect on the body. The ranges of the metals varied.
On the high range, some of the supplements surpassed a maximum limit recommended for daily exposure.
Among those Consumer Reports tested was EAS Myoplex Original Rich Dark Chocolate Shake – with 16.9 micrograms of arsenic (limit of 15 micrograms a day says U.S. Pharmacopeia) and exposed users to elevated levels of heavy metals when they drink three servings a day.
Other brands tested include Energy First Pro Energy Whey Protein Isolate; BSN Lean Dessert Protein Shake; Muscle Milk among others.
The human body is made up of about 16 percent protein which plays a major role in cell functioning. Many enzymes, hormones and our DNA are composed of protein.
The body cannot make nine amino acids, the building blocks of protein, so they must be found from an animal and plant diets. With an inability to make protein, the body will break itself down to meet its protein need if not enough is consumed.
Humans can source protein from eggs, meat, milk and poultry, and nuts as well as beans and soy. Men reportedly need about 56 grams per day of protein and women, about 46 grams, depending on weight and activity, though some dispute that.
Consumer Reports plans to name names in the July issue of the Consumer Report magazine which is available by subscription. #
Tried zumba for the first time tonight which I NEVER would've done before IP. Yes, I'm an uncoordinated klutz but I had FUN!
I love Zumba and have been doing it twice a week for about a year now. I must admit that the classes immediately following my starting IP were tough (lower energy and sore legs) but I'm fine now. I've never enjoyed cardio classes before, but this is so much fun - the music, the dancing, the atmosphere...everyone should try it!
Super busy this week, but the SUN is shining this morning and it just makes it so much easier to attack the day. As I look out my window I see nothing but clear blue sky and bright light...Yahoo!!!!! Off to tackle another day of third graders (12 more days to go). Have a great day everyone.

Where do you live? All I seee everyday is SUN! Too much of it most of time.

You are very lucky to see the Sun everyday! Somedays even in summer the sun does not shine---just grey blue skies. But that is what I get for marrying a Canadian and moving further north! And yes, I have learnt to 'like' winter here.......but hate it when the highways are closed and can't get out for days at a time.
Also, question, is there any strategy to which of the packets you have each day? I think I'd do the hot chocolate drink at every meal if I could. ...
Also, is there any thought to having the snack between lunch and dinner instead of dinner and bed? I seem to get really hungry before dinner but am not hungry after I eat at night.
You can have any non-restricted packet 3 times a day, so you could do the hot chocolate drink at every meal if you want. Just try to keep your total carbs under 40 each day and net carbs under 30.
My protocol says I could have the last packet in the afternoon or after dinner. So if I was going to have a late dinner, I would have it in the afternoon. If I was going to have an early dinner, I would have it before bedtime.

It's in Dr. Tran's book which this diet is based on, The Unbalanced Diet Approach to a Slimmer You. You can download this book from his site: www.trantiendiet.com.
I copied the following from his website:
"Why do some people gain weight more easily than others?
The Culprit: Insulin
Why this diet and not another?
It’s now known that insulin is the common denominator for weight gain, whatever its cause.
Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas when you eat, especially if you eat sugar.
Insulin has two roles: lower glycemia or the amount of sugar in the blood and store fat. Insulin is the hormone that stimulates lipogenesis, which is the production of fat.
How does insulin work?
If I eat three pieces of chocolate, my pancreas will secrete enough insulin to bring my blood sugar back down to its normal level and that’s the end of it. I don’t gain weight and I don’t feel hungry.
The pancreas of someone who has a tendency to gain weight when she eats the same three pieces of chocolate will produce much more insulin than necessary, resulting in hypoglycemia. As a result, her body stores everything she eats and her pancreas is like a furnace or motor that’s out of control. And what do you when a motor is out of control? You cut off its fuel supply, give it a break, tune it and then restart it so that it’ll run better.
I’m suggesting that you do exactly that same thing with this diet."
Novak!!!...you were so right! Just had to stick with it. Finally had a 4lb loss this week. Yippee!! I think I will adjust my goal weight, lol. You so called it, hahaha.

ah! so you are a dark beer lover, i like the junk beer that most people only drink at keggers and toga parties. i'm pretty sure that though the stella artoir is a more stout beer, it's probably better for you than the crap i drank last weekend
i WISH it would rain and cool down a little more down here, it's about 95-100 everyday and most of the time too hot to even enjoy the sunshine. went out on a friends boat last weekend and the next day to the pool and the backs of my legs were as red as hot cheetos. the pacific nw is beautiful, i drove up through utah, idaho, oregon and washington a few years back pre-kids and have always wanted to go back.
well you were on the boating beer, that would be easy drinking low octane so you can keep going and going
trust me, this place is beautiful but having spring when its summer would be nice. Although, I have to knock on wood, today is supposed to reach 67...YIPPY!!!! one of my brothers and family live in houston area and I sure don't want to be there during summer time but around xmas time its just perfect.

perfect analogy. where do you think the 90 days comes from though? also everyone has a different amounth of weight to loose so does the 90 days mean that even if you have lost all your weight say in 4 weeks, you still have to be restricted for 90 days? ie: cutting off the fuel supply.
TO NOVAK How sweet of you to encourage Calgarygirlie to come on down to the 130s. I started about where you and she did and I'm hangin' in the 140s and hoping to be in the 130s before long! You and BevS are so appreciated. I love the way you stuck to protocol and you can now testify to the benefits of following the guidelines. I hope you and BevS will stay on this site as you maintain your weight losses!!!
Many of us have had increased frequency of TOM and I know I've had increased cramping with it, as well. It is interesting that we are not supposed to fortify our diet with an iron supplement considering how much more blood is leaving my body. I know the FDA is starting to promote multivitamins w/o iron --something w/ it increasing free radicals, etc. Anyway, I am expelling more blood more frequently so it's got me wondering if an iron supplement, at least every other day, might not be a good thing. Thoughts from any of you who have met your goals??? Novak? BevS? Anyone?

TO PITAKITTEN Are you asking if "massive libations over the weekend" could have something to do with how you're feeling or if the ketosis is affecting how you feel? Dr. Tran Tien Chan recommends no alcohol during protocol so I wouldn't risk the effects. You only have one body and alcohol will interfere with the goal of the IP protocol which extends far beyond just weight and fat loss. The IP Protocol heals your pancreas allowing it to function optimally. I think most folks on IP actually feel really good~maybe even their best~ when in ketosis--energetic, alert, focused, etc. I don't know how much impact alcohol consumption has to do with the diet but I know the doc says No-no to it so I would not consume any at all while on IP.

I tried iron supplements for 2 weeks, taking them every other day and did not notice any beneficial effect (increased constipation was one I was caught with - sorry for TMI!) I have always been borderline anemic and in my latest blood work, nothing to mention even thought I started IP back in August...
i would just like to say thank you to everyone here that supports fellow members through the ups and downs. this is a journey and some people may fall down. we are all doing this to acheive a goal and everyone WILL make mistakes, none of us are perfect. i think it's best to keep this place a sanctuary to lend positive advice instead of making people feel guilty or bad about the decisions they make-good or bad.
maybe it's just the little hippie inside of me..hope everyone is having a great day!

aww, that was too sweet and I agree whole heartedly! Keepting a positive outlook and encouraging others is the only way to go! :-) I love coming here and reading about everyone's accomplishments. It's nice to take a little time out of the day and connect with people who truly know the day to day struggles we can all have, because sometimes this diet can make you feel alone. I don't post too often, (I'm chasing around my 15 month old most of the day) but when I can, I just love reading about everyone's lives and celebrating their achievments! It keeps me in the game! :-)
