Good Morning all! Just a quick note, just finished the book Intuitive Eating, had read it before, but somethimes when you have the right mind set and re read something, it makes more sense and becomes clearer. We are on vacation, but did paper work and bank statements yesterday and today we are seeing a salesman, maybe I need to re-read the definition of vacation!!
Make it a blessed day. Tammy
Tammy, are you away from home on vacation? My dh is a veterinarian so the only way he can get vacation is to get away from home. Too bad I'm a real home body.
Katterina If you don't mind me asking, what part of the Eden Diet do you consider "un-IE"?
Hello! Sorry for my late reply. I have been traveling quite a bit for work lately.
Maybe "un-IE" is too strongly put, but I was thinking of the differences in portion control between the two books. IIRC, with Intuitive Eating, one uses their inner cues to decide when to stop eating. In the Eden Diet, the author quotes research that shows how human satiety signals are good but not perfect, which is why she encourages other ways to help with portion control, like the "one or two fist" size portions or having only moderate size portions of very high fat/calorie foods like cheesecake.
Personally, I find the Eden Diet potion control methods to be very helpful, but I figured some might find it too diet-like, as many are coming to IE to escape any kind of diet mentality. I could be wrong, though.
Just a quick flyby to say I am still around. I can't type much because I have evidently sprained my right arm and it hurts from my neck down into my right hand. I need to get to the chiropractor but can't leave Tony for long as his L leg is swollen. I took him to the cardiologist and they are running tests on him and are not moving as fast as I think they should. We won't have any results until he goes back to the cardiologist after all test results are in on the 17th of this month. I am totally IE now because I don't have time for anything else and don't feel like doing anything else.
I am losing weight. I have finally dropped down a total of 6 lbs since January 1st. Not much of a loss but at least those scales ae moving downward. Slowly but surely.
I'll be back when I can. I will be reading, just not writing.
Sorry to hear about your hubby, Trish. I had a funny experience. For some reason, lately I've been weighing again, and the other day it was up 5lb. Come to find out the next day I noticed that the balance for the scale was all the way to one side causing a 5lb gain. Maybe I should stay off the scale. ha.
Good for you Trish on the weight loss and IE mindset! Hope your arm feels better soon! I had a similar problem last year but it was tension in my shoulder that made everything just all knotty and painful. (Stress and too much computer time!) Hope everything turns out OK for your dh.
Tammy, I know what you mean about re-reading something and how it makes more sense or suddenly clicks the second time around. I guess that could come from gaining the experience and then you read it and go "oh yeah, I get it ..." or something like that. I definitely need to re-read my IE book (boy how many times have I said that?). I think it has grown stale for me again. I'm not dieting, but I am wavering between being really diligent to just being plain lazy. Comfort zones are so hard to get out of ... er, maybe the better word is "rut."
I haven't been on the scale in so long I can't remember when I was last on it so I have no clue how my weight is doing. Some days I look thinner than others, but I really think that's got a lot to do with water retention. I can really hold on to some water.
Have a great one everybody!
EDIT: PS Carol, that's funny! LOL!

Good morning, ladies...I finally had a chance to catch up on the last several pages of this thread, after having not been here in awhile.
I'm at the point where my "dieting" attempts are so half-hearted that I'd be better off not to even TRY to do one again, even something as apparently "harmless" as counting calories and entering foods on Spark People. Anything that even remotely seems like "restriction" is enough to throw me into a tiz now, then I end up eating some "junk" in response.
I'm also finding that my age is now starting to have some bearing on this whole "losing weight" thing. I'm going to be 54 this summer. Though I'd LIKE to lose weight, I find myself thinking that it's not one of the most important things in life--like it used to be when I was in my 20s, 30s, and even 40s. I'd like to feel better, and look better, but I'm just no longer willing to go to drastic extremes to accomplish this. I'm tired of the constant battle. I can no longer work up the "ooomph" I need to push myself into another weight loss try.
Is this a bad thing? I don't know.

This is an interesting quote. Since becoming SO big, I find that my full signals don't work well at all. Once in awhile I'll find a food that I can feel full on relatively early, but usually it would take a LOT of food before I'd feel anywhere near full.
Even though I just can't get into "counting calories" now, I do think I could ease into smaller portions on some foods.
Thanks for posting this, because it might end up being helpful to me.
Because of certain health issues (blood sugar issues and I have to avoid gluten) I do have to watch what I eat, but I can do that without actual dieting. I basically know what I can and can't eat, and within those parameters, I just can't diet anymore. No can do.
I don't know where to start. I have bought several books. I have the Eden Diet. I have the Weigh Down Diet (which I actually did over a decade ago). I have a book by Geneen Roth. Now I bought a best seller called I Can Make you Thin, which I'm told uses the same principles as the other books. So, is there an actual book called Intuitive Eating? One more won't break my budget.
I haven't read all the threads, but obviously you guys are in the same boat I'm in. We've had it with diets.
Carol We were supposed to go and visit my brother in Tennessee, but he has a new job coming up and needs to go to school so we had to cancel, so we will stay at home, we are going to Biloxi tomorrow to see Bill Engval, hubby loves him, personally I can get all I want off dvd's, but he has his heart set on going, so we are going and will be back some time on Saturday.
Katterina Thanks for clearing up what you meant, and I do get your point.
Blue Hang in there!!
SpiritPath Weclome! Yes there is a book called Intuitive Eating, it's very good. There is another good one called Eden Diet and I can Make You Thin is also very good. They all more or less have the same principal. Good Luck.
Welcome spiritpath! Yes, absolutely have had it with diets! I have the Intuitive Eating book as well. And I also have the Weigh Down Diet book. Also watched the I Can Make You Thin TV specials when they were on TV. (Haha ... with a title like that who wouldn't watch I Can Make You Thin?!? I was glued to that TV! LOL)
Well, lets see if I can stay on top of my game today ...
Becky, I know what you mean. Lately I had a strange experience. I was taking antibiotics for a UTI and was having stomach pain and confusing that with hunger. It happened for several days until I figured out it wasn't true hunger. I started taking prilosec and the hunger feeling went away. What a relief!!!
I'm really paying attention to my feelings of hunger/fullness today.
I have a real problem with being hungry, some days all day long. I know it is physical because I have blood sugar issues. I've started taking a fiber supplement (glucomannan), and it's really helping to keep me full which is a blessing. I hate thinking about food all day.
I certainly believe we can all lose weight without traditional dieting. It might be a lot slower, but the tortoise wins the race.
I understand what you mean, LittleElla, as sometimes hunger can be confusing to me too. And yes, this WOE does take longer to lose but in general it stays off.
