Is there no spec for how far a revolution is? Might have to dig a little to find out.

Fat Chick B Gone 12-31-2008 05:14 PM

Ohhhh sign me up too for 1,000 miles. I will count walking, running and the very rare elliptical and/or bike at the gym.

JackieRn 12-31-2008 07:30 PM

Does anyone own a Garmin forerunner 305, do you like it? I just ordered one b/c I'm tired of running the same routes that I have to map out with my Car GPS. Also, I'm wondering if the heart rate monitor also has an estimation of number of calories burned?

ennay 12-31-2008 07:43 PM

I've had both a 301 (w/ HRM) and currently own a 205 - which is the 305 without the HRM as I never used that part.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Never leave the house without it!

The Garmin will estimate calories based on your weight & pace if you do not use the HRM and I think based on your weight and HRM if you do use it.

MTA: heh we have the same ticker style...happy running!

MTA2- Can I be in this group if I want to do more than 1000?

Thanks, for letting me know. I feel less guilty about buying myself another present. :D BTW very impressive that you qualified for Boston, that is one of my long term goals. How much training did it take for you to do it? what weekly mileage did you peak at? Did you follow a specific training plan?

I peaked at....wait I gotta go look it up. 61.8 miles but I am a slow ramper, I have figured out for me I need to ramp sloooooooooooowwwwwwwly. I ended up with 200+ mile months for 3 months before the race. I did minimal speedwork as mileage trumps speedwork and I cant ramp and speed without getting injured.

I ended up at 2100 miles last year and I am aiming for 2400 this year. I had a horrid december, but I am hoping to be around 50 mpw most weeks.

I didnt follow a specific training plan exactly, I would say I most closely followed Hal Higdon intermediate 2 (google higdon) but I stretched out the middle weeks more and combined it with my own plan.

Absolutely!!! Joyful Veg Girl mentioned 1500. Whatever your goal is, you are welcome here!

Shannon, a good goal might be 500 miles. That allows for 10 mile weeks, with a couple of weeks off. I know you are starting slow (right??? ;)) but you could be at 9 to 10 mile weeks pretty soon and if you start doing some longer runs in late summer and fall, I think you could do it.

JackieRn 12-31-2008 11:17 PM

Thanks for the info ennay, I aspire to that kind of mileage. What an amazing achievement on top of Mommyhood. It must take a lot of organization to keep up that kind of running schedule. You're awesome!!!!!

ShadowBabe 01-01-2009 12:16 AM

I am gonna go for it! Walking 1000 miles!

I am new here, but I am ready to do this thing! (I posted on the intro board)

Mrs Snark 01-01-2009 12:48 AM

My first miles of 2009 are in the books, w00t!

While waiting around for midnight I started to think that it wasn't that great an idea after all because I got sleepy. But then when we got out there (my husband escorted me on his bike!) and people were shooting off fireworks and shouting "Happy New Year" (and "You're nuts!") as I ran by, and the miles seemed to just melt away. It was alot of fun and even DH wants to do it every year from now on!

2009 Challenge miles: 3.14..... 996.86 to go!

river 01-01-2009 12:59 AM

This sounds like fun! 1000 miles is doable for me, fitness wise, as long as I am consistent in getting the training in time wise. I'll make a ticker now! :)

ennay 01-01-2009 03:59 AM

1.7 at 12:11am to kick it off!

stopeating 01-01-2009 07:36 AM

Just got a treadmill this week. Sounds like a challenge!

RunnerKim 01-01-2009 11:35 AM

I am really ticked. Last night it was absolutely FREEZING and the wind was about 35 mph (I run in most anything but HATE running into a strong headwind when the temps are below 20 degrees). I didn't even stay awake until midnight. But then the worst was to come. Both my girls are sick so they were both up crying ALL night. I got about 2 hours of total sleep. Now DH tells me he's going to leave so he can study for this big PMP exam he has next week and then he has his bowling league tonight. So here I am with a 2 year old and 5 year old and I can't leave them to go outside for a run today. I don't have a gym membership so what can I do? I'm so aggravated! Hope you all get to log your miles for today. I may have to double up tomorrow ;p

jahjah1223 01-01-2009 11:47 AM

I am in starting today!

midwife 01-01-2009 11:56 AM

Yea, Welcome, Welcome, Welcome!!!!

I am so impressed, Jo & Ennay! Sounds like a great way to kick off the New Year!!

Hey Kim! Sorry to hear about your obstacles. There will be days like this all year long!! Breathe in, breathe out.....If it doesn't happen today, it will happen tomorrow, 'kay?

mountain mama 01-01-2009 12:05 PM

Kim: I know you've had a rough couple days.. but it will get better.. Focus on good thoughts and things will clear up... i know it's not the same.. but what about a WATP's jogging DVD? Just to get some exercise in on those freezing days that you can't go outside. It will at least get the blood flowing and the mood up! :) Good luck.. hug your kiddies... hopefully they will feel better soon :)

Fat Chick B Gone 01-01-2009 01:18 PM

Jo - I was stalking you and stumbled upon this thread ;)

Kim - Oh sorry that sounds like a major sucky day. But it's only Day 1 of the year - just breathe.

sm177 01-01-2009 01:29 PM

I'm pumped for this! It's pretty cold today but I'm still hoping to get in 6 miles.

JackieRN - my dad also has one of those watches and loves it! I think it's helped him improve his time.
He's an amazing runner, he does full marathons in 3 hours and does Boston and New York every year and he even goes to Europe to do marathons. I'm so proud of him, he's my inspiration for this challenge!

ennay 01-01-2009 02:27 PM

9 miles this morning. It was pouring and my rain jacket apparently is no longer waterproof. I am pretty sure if I had jumped in a swimming pool fully clothed I wouldnt have been any wetter.

mountain mama 01-01-2009 02:38 PM

3.3 miles down :) Mixing walking up hill and running. I used to be able to run straight for 3.1 miles.. but I have to work bac up to that.. Amazing what a couple of weeks off can do to your body.. either negativly or positivly.. lol
oh well! Tomorrow i will add more running in and build up!

JackieRn 01-01-2009 03:59 PM

sm177: your dad is an inspiration, thanks for your input on the watch.

So I did my first run today, just 3.5 mile hill workout it was miserable it is so cold and its sleeting, only motivation was getting to move my ticker. Happy New Year everyone.

second chance 01-01-2009 04:04 PM

Great idea! Im also in :) ill do the 1000 mile run/jog/walk :)

Dianeofnka 01-01-2009 04:15 PM

10 miles this morning. It was cold and I was weirdly dehydrated from my one and only drink last night, but I did those miles! Great way to start the new year.

Nature Girl 01-01-2009 04:53 PM

I can do this!

I am really up for this! I was already shooting for 652+ miles on my bike, so if I can figure out how to convert my x-c ski minutes (around a small track in my pasture) into miles and add in other ski miles and hiking, I can do this! If you runners can pound the pavement for all those miles, I can certainly get them in while either rolling or by foot!
I skied this morning for 31 minutes so I'm started.

EZMONEY 01-01-2009 04:58 PM

I'm in!

I had 807.5 miles in 2008 so I am in the "hunt" for a grand!

Walked 3.25 today for the STINKIN' 5K

Good luck everyone ~ Gary

CyndiM 01-01-2009 05:05 PM

I'm in and doing the combined walk, treadmill, elliptical, bike for 1000. I've just started trying to run again on the treadmill but definitely can't run outside so will use the bike & hiking miles in the summer. What a great idea!

I started the year off with 4 miles on the treadmill.

me4life 01-01-2009 06:16 PM

i'm in i was just thinking of tracking miles myself and saw this thread...i'm in for 1000 via walking, running and elliptical...preferably more running but working up to that

midwife 01-01-2009 06:48 PM

:carrot: Welcome everyone!!!!

5 miles today. Please note that this will be the first and last time in my whole entire life I will have more mileage than Jo in a challenge!!! (although she's probably knocking out another 10 miles as we speak!)

jenguin 01-01-2009 08:24 PM

I wasn't quite ambitious enough to head out for a midnight run, even though that sounds like a fantastic idea. I did get out and run 3.7 miles during the day though. I was also able to try out my new Yak Trax as it's still a bit icy here. Those things are great! It was a little weird getting used to the feel of running with them on in general, but when I hit the icy patches I was excited to have them on. I'm not sure how nerdy that makes me to be excited about something like that - ha!

Happy New Year everyone!

midwife 01-01-2009 08:43 PM

Way to start the New Year, Jen!

Please note that this is the first and probably last time in my whole entire life that I have more miles in a challenge than Jenguin! I gotta seize my moment in the sun!

I admire your dedication to run in ice......brrr!!!! Are you planning on another marathon this year, Jen?

jahjah1223 01-01-2009 09:00 PM

Im soo jealous how do you people run so much!! LOL

Yaktrax are great, I had the same excitement the first time I went out with mine. Its amazing how stable you feel on ice b/c looking at them they don't look like much but they work very well.

Thanks! What is WATP's video? Never heard of it and don't know what that means. Is it Walk Away The Pounds? If so, I just won a DVD of that on Ebay yesterday for $2.00! Worth a shot when I really can't get out of the house.

Thanks for the encouragement ladies! Hey...thanks for the post about the Yak-Tracks! I just ordered mine day before yesterday...they're on backorder.

I went out for 4.5 miles today. It was 24 degrees but thank God no wind. I had a glass of wine last night too and its funny how one little glass of wine can affect your running.

Ennay...love your progress photos. Your children are just beautiful!

So who here belongs to a running club or has races lined up for 2009? I joined a running club but have yet to do a run with them. Going to call the lead guy in charge today to find out when/where their long run is this weekend. I am signed up to run the Jersey Shore Half Marathon on May 5th (?...I think its the 5th).

Another final question...how do I get my tickers into my profile????

After being a member for 20 days an option will appear under user CP to let you edit your signature and then you can make a ticker. There are instructions on how to do so here: http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=56332

for running miles tickerfactory.com lets you make one and the process is similar to the one on 3fc.

As far as a running club, I haven't joined. Ther is a half marathon the day before my 25th b-day that I want to do here in Ontario.

mytmom 01-02-2009 09:32 AM

ok, love this idea! And I need some serious motivation and challeges. I'm not a runner, but I'd like to be one. I'm going to count my combined movement, elliptical, treadmill, bike, outside walk/jog and I'll aim for the 1000 miles as well. I'm going to enjoy a cup of coffee right now while everyone is still alseep and the house is quiet and then I'll kick it off in a couple of hours. Thanks for a great idea!!

I ran once with the running club here in Charlotte and they are just too fast for me at this point. It's okay - I'll get there and they were all very nice. I'm doing a 5k on Valentines day and after that I'm going to consider finding a 10k to shoot for.

For your ticker go to userCP and edit signature. You'll see ticker options there.

mountain mama 01-02-2009 10:33 AM

Kim: yeah.. it's walk away the pounds. It's not high intensity but its better than nothing when you are stuck inside. I like the ones that have some jogging in them :)

Im very frustrated.. I have neuro cardiogenic syncope.. which i guess is a fancy word for ' i pass out now and again' my blood pressure lowers and sky rockets for a couple seconds when I first stand up or change positions quickly like that. It never happened till I got HEALTHY which is annoying.. hehe but anyway.. im frustrated because I had another spell today at the gym and had to back out of yoga.. and couldnt run today. Im going to chill for teh afternoo nand hopefully i can go for a walk/run this evening.
