Hey, it happens. The trick is to have it not happen more than it happens!

6 miles this morning. I am stunned to see my ticker is up to 70 miles for January. I want to go back through all of my postings to make sure I've counted right.

MBN 01-25-2009 03:49 PM

I did my 3rd half marathon of this running season (2 more planned) -- adding 13.1 miles plus my other runs this week brings me to 90.1 miles year to date! I also went kayaking yesterday, for a total of 29.4 paddling mile so far.

The half marathon was a bit ugly ... I just had a bad day. Maybe I was insufficiently rested from running a hard 10K the week before (set a PR) or maybe my fueling/hydration was off. In any case, it was a real struggle to make 2:12, and I'm happy to just be done Some days are just like that. It was 10 minutes off my best pace, but heck it still is a half hour faster than where I started out a few years ago .... Next one is 4 weeks away, so I'll have some recovery and training time.

EZMONEY 01-25-2009 04:22 PM

Great job Ladies!

I took the dogs out for 3 miles after church while Angie did yoga. I will be out of town most of the week so will check in around Friday. Keep on going gals!

52/1000 MILES

MaryEllen 01-25-2009 09:20 PM

+1.5 miles on the elliptical today....25.5 total.

sm177 01-25-2009 10:53 PM

Congrats MBN!

I did 4.25 TM miles yesterday. Tonight I braved the -20 weather and did 8.2 miles:carrot:. I got so far west into the city I felt kind of scared. I wish I had the motivation to run in the morning when there are fewer crazies lurking about. For my entire run I kept thinking about all the ways I could defend myself if someone attacked me, it kept me entertained.

midwife 01-25-2009 11:23 PM

Are the crazies out at -20? Eek!!

Be safe out there, sm177!

ChubbyLily 01-25-2009 11:38 PM

What a great idea!

I just joined so I will be a few weeks behind but I want in! :carrot:

Mrs Snark 01-26-2009 06:15 AM

Great job MBN; sorry you bonked a little but that is still a fabulous run!

+6.33 miles this morning...

mountain mama 01-26-2009 10:08 AM

ahh.. i've been slackin on my running cause i'm newly addicted to yoga booty ballet.. hha i have to find a hapy medium of running and YBB... hope to get a bunch of miles clocked in this week :)

kittycat40 01-26-2009 10:11 AM

8.58 mile run this am. I walked .5 miles to my commuter train so I'm rounding up to 9. :)

sm177 01-26-2009 11:31 PM

midwife - the crazies are persistent in toronto! I'm really considering taking some self defense classes. I think it'd make me feel safer.

3.1 TM miles today. I was having some weird leg pain. I got new shoes but they're pretty much the same as my old shoes so I don't think that was the problem. I think it's the outdoor to indoor transition:?:. It was in my upper calf in only one leg.

midwife 01-27-2009 08:22 AM

+3 today!!

RunnerKim 01-27-2009 08:24 AM

Ladies, ladies, ladies....I HAVE been running but I've been SO FREAKIN BUSY in the rest of my life I've had ZERO time to get online. I must say though that while I've been running I cut down from 5-6 days a week to 3-4. I did an awesome run on the Delaware river (8miles) last Sunday but it was VERY icy and VERY slippery and my Yak-Traks are STILL not in! So I think I pulled a groin muscle or something on the very upper/inner part of my thigh. So I've been taking it easy. Unfortunately with T.O.M. being here and slacking on the exercise my eating has gone haywire and I'm eating every sugary-carby thing in sight. I feel like I gained 15 lbs. Ugh!!!!!!!!!! Back on track today...

Oh, and I got Leslie Sansone's 5 mile power walk video as well as Jillian Michaels' 30 day shred and I love them both! (and Leslie looks MUCH lighter in this video).

Mrs Snark 01-27-2009 09:02 AM

Ran 3.6 miles this morning. :)

mountain mama 01-27-2009 12:36 PM

runnerkim : I think i might invest in WATP five mile you were taking about. i have the four fast mile one which is ok for those days where i have to stay inside.. i didnt know she had a fiver!

urockmom 01-27-2009 12:54 PM

fauxtini~ love the new pic! you're looking hot!!! :flame:

1.5 for me today. 0.5 on treadmill and then a 1 mile swim. Have really been off track over the last 2 weeks so have to get my butt into gear :kickbutt: to make it to my monthly goal!

JackieRn 01-27-2009 05:24 PM

I haven't been able to run since Saturday, I've been in such denial of the growing pain in my right heel, turns out I have a case of plantar fasciitis which is a first for me. I'm hoping to start up again later on this week. Has anyone else dealt with this, if so what helped make it better.

MaryEllen 01-27-2009 11:03 PM

+2 on the elliptical...low miles from that machine, but high reward, and I did both miles faster than I had the last. Kicked my butt.

New total: 27.5

Platinum 01-27-2009 11:33 PM

Hey guys, I'm gonna join this as this will give me a greater incentive to get my butt on the treadmill and not just look at it as I walk by. I was doing well last week (started TM again on Monday last previous workout was 12/23/08) but then this weekend I got a bad coughing cold and I haven't been on since thursday... but I think I'll get on again tomorrow as I'm feeling almost back to normal and make a fresh start on my exercise plan.

I'm doing a 12 week walking plan and I hope by the end I will have lost enough weight to start a walk-jog plan, and that means by the end of the year I hope to be fit enough to be running. So my goal right now is for 500miles this year!!!! I've kept track of what I've done so far so I will go make my ticker right now! :) yay!

Fat Chick B Gone 01-28-2009 07:04 AM

Hmm I got a little off track with tracking. Just refigured everything out and I've done 50.74 to date. Gotta get better about logging in here - thank goodness for the garmin ;)
So 338 days left in the year (counting today) which means I need to average 2.8 miles a day. Since I count walking also - shouldn't be a problem!

Mrs Snark 01-28-2009 09:33 AM

Wish I had some advice for you jackie, I've never had plantar fasciitis. I hope you find some info to help!

JackieRn 01-28-2009 09:47 AM

I did 3.89 slow miles but at least I made it outside to day. My foot hurt a little but I made it through. I've been icing and stretching, I am getting a strassburg sock apparently they work well to treat PF for the price I sure hope so, this running thing is getting pricey, hopefully it helps.

urockmom 01-28-2009 11:47 AM

10.5 miles on the bike for me today.

JackieRn~Oh, PF is the worst. I dealt with it for almost a year! Here are a few tips:
1) Get a regular water bottle and freeze it. Then, run your arch back and forth over it 20 mins on, 20 mins off for as long as you can stand it. Watching TV is a good time for this.
2) I got a foot brace that I slept with that flexed my foot all night. That helped some but I kicked my DH a lot, which he was not too fond of! :D
3) Finally, I ended up getting a cortisone shot in the heel :p and then had to lay off running for 2 months. I am sure this is not what you want to hear but it worked!

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to take at least 1-2 weeks off and see what happens. I'm thinking if it doesn't improve with the sock I'll probably have to go the cortisone shot route and take more time off.

keemster 01-28-2009 10:09 PM

So I fell off the wagon once I got back to school. I've managed to run 17ish miles total since I've been here though. Gotta be more motivated!

sm177 01-28-2009 11:06 PM

Jackie I'm so sorry to hear this! You are an amazing runner and I look up to you. I really hope everything turns out!

I've been having some lower leg and knee pain so I took the last 2 days off. I'm terrified of getting an injury. I did the stationary bike instead but I won't contribute that to my mileage.

ennay 01-28-2009 11:31 PM

Jackie I am sorry to hear about your PF. Have you tried orthotics or physical therapy? Cortizone works but can weaken tendons and doesnt remove the underlying cause.

MaryEllen 01-29-2009 12:44 AM

I did 11 miles on the bike and .5 miles on the elliptical. New total: 39

My doctor thought I may have PF once, and he said it can take up to 18 months to fully heal but it does it at its own pace. He said that laying a full water bottle on the ground sideways and running your foot back and forth over it is a good way to stretch it out and help it heal faster.

Primm 01-29-2009 02:39 AM

Jackie, I too had PF a couple of years ago. I got an orthotic that had a hard arch support - I had to "practice" wearing it for an hour a day for a week, then increase that time until I could wear it at work.

It was wonderful! It was uncomfortable at first, but it worked by stretching the plantar fascia so that the inflammation is reduced. Achilles tendon stretches were also prescribed by my podiatrist - stand on the edge of a step with your heels over the edge, then press down and hold your heels.

Good luck - I remember driving home from a long day at work many a time and having to pull over because the pain in my feet made driving impossible. And hobbling round the house until my feet warmed up. That's all over now, thank goodness!

JackieRn 01-29-2009 12:35 PM

Thanks everyone for you concern. I'm lucky my gym has a physical therapist and I have some exercises to do. I will be looking into getting custom orthotics I use a commercial pair right now but I really think I could benefit because every running injury I've ever had is on my right side be it my knee or ankle and I think there is something off with my form.

The stair master is my new friend, I can do that with no pain and I'm taping my right foot so it feels pretty secure. I'm doing fine with taking time off, as much as I want to run. I'll keep you posted on my progress.

kittycat40 01-29-2009 01:02 PM

2 miles on semi black ice roads. winter bites.

ennay 01-29-2009 02:47 PM

6.X today 20 minute warmup and 1/2 jog/walk intervals. I am getting so tired of this walking thing!

199.0/200 for my January goal.

midwife 01-29-2009 07:38 PM

Ennay, I think you win the prize for January milage.
Smokin' avatar, Jo!
Kitty, stay warm. Spring's coming. I promise!!
Jackie, I'm glad you're being sensible about your injury. Can't say I'm ever sensible about that sort of thing!

So....we are at the end of January! How are we doing with our targeted mileage? I think I am below where I would hope to be, but I also know that warmer weather and longer days bring more mileage. Can't wait!!!

2 miles sprint intervals tonight

MaryEllen 01-29-2009 10:01 PM

I did two more miles on the treadmill....41 total.

Overall I'm pretty happy with where I am in mileage. I'm actually more worried about summer, because I'm going out of the country for six weeks and I'm worried about staying on track.

sm177 01-29-2009 10:50 PM

6.6 miles for me. It's snowed about 20cm in the past 2 days so it was a hard run. I got no traction whatsoever and at times it got really frustrating, especially up hills. But it was still more enjoyable than the treadmill hahah:carrot:

urockmom 01-30-2009 12:34 PM

2.5 miles on the indoor track for me. Waaayyyy too much ice out there to try it-even in Yak-traks. One would not call me "Grace." Everyone running out there is brave!!!

I am just over the target for January so I am pretty happy with that. I think Feb. will be especially short since I am going away for a week so I'll have to turn up the speed next week to get ahead.

EZMONEY 01-30-2009 12:38 PM

57/1000 Miles

Dianeofnka 01-30-2009 03:19 PM

1 mile on the treadmill. I am looking forward to getting out in the mornings again and doing some real running (but only if it warms up around here...).
