HI All, I'm new to this thread. I was diagnosed with Type II last month, but have real issues with my doc diagnosing just based on my HbA1c, which was right on the borderline at 6.0. Looking for a 2nd medical opinion if I can't do metformin or something else other than injecting insulin twice a day.
I started SBD 9/5 and have lost 7 lbs in 10 days - which is a great start for me. I find it's hard to talk about the diabetes with people who don't have it, which is why I joined here.
I'm on so much insulin my sugars run in the 80's and 90's mostly. I think they're almost too low as I get low blood sugar reactions at 75 and I really can't be having LBS reactions every other day, they freak me out.
Mom had diabetes from having her pancreas removed due to pancreatitis. Dad has Type II, diagnosed when he was about 60. Grandfather had Type II I think it was. Mom and GF died at 62 and I am 43 with a 2 year old, so I must stick around much longer than that!
Hope to get to know you all!
Kim

Cool

Kim - welcome to the thread. Why are you on insulin if your A1c is only a 6? That's pretty extreme. Is your doctor an endocrinologist or a GP? I agree that you need a second opinion from an endocrinologist. The usual treatment for Type II is to try meds first. Also, if you're a six, diet and exercise alone should be able to control somebody with a 6 A1c. I'm not a doctor but I would certainly question the insulin prescription. Good luck and keep posting.
Hi to everyone else. I'm still on my medical fast program and as you can see from my tracker I'm losing weight steadily. Temptations don't abate though and right now I could go for one of the toasted bagels with cream cheese that are floating around the office.

Thanks, Rosetta, I think the same thing. I was pg at the time I went to the endocrinologist (since miscarried, that's why I didn't start SBD til 9/5) and she said I couldn't take meds while pg. Course now I find out that metformin is routinely given to women up to 12 wks pg. I am so glad to hear that I'm not crazy. Looking for a 2nd opinion now.
OH NO, I would have a terrible time with bagels right now, don't send any to Colorado!! Be strong!

Hey! Glad to meet you Kim,

I agree-a second opinion is a good idea.

The only time I've been on isulin is when I was in the hospital -easier for the nurses i guess.

The girls here have a lot of good suggestions.
Take care.

Where is everybody? Is this thread usually pretty quiet? I had a low blood sugar reaction last night and wondered how everybody else treats those. I just hated to eat hard candy, since it's totally Non-SBD, but had to get my sugar back up pronto.
Also, has anybody found a sugar free gum that's not full of sorbitol? That raises your sugar too, just slower than glucose.
Meadow - I have heard of yeast infections being related to diabetes, but never bladder infections. The early morning rise in blood sugar may be the dawn phenomenon and you may need to adjust your evening meals/snacks. http://www.diabetesselfmanagement.co...&sid=6&sk=5WZ7 Or it could be a rebound from lows during the night. Definitely something to run by your doc, I think.

Otto - yeah, this thread has been kind of slow lately. People must be busy with Fall things. There's really no way to treat low blood sugar except with glucose. Glucose tablets, which are available at pharmacies, are recommended by diabetes experts. You can also use fruit juice - keep a supply of those mini cans of juice around. Or in an emergency three sugar cubes. It's more important to bring your sugar back up than to worry about following the diet to the letter. Besides, I don't think one small ingestion of sugar will spoil all your good work.

Hi everyone.. rosettas right when that happens you need to get sugars up fast.. at my class last night they said glucose tablets.. juice or soda..i found the class informative.. besides all the basics that we all know we were told every ones diff.. so we are to test before a meal..keep a journal of what we ate paying attention to portions and carbs and then test 2 hrs later to see if the sugars are to high.. they should be around 160 after eating so if they are considerably higher then what you ate was not tolerated by your system..by doing this for several days you will know what foods causes elevation for you..makes sence to me.. also to read labels serving size and amt and the carb content one serving is 15 grms..and its recomended that you have 4-6 servings a meal..and your plate should be 1/2 vegetables 1/4 protein and 1/4 starch..also you should avoid high sugar foods but to pay attention to the carbs not the sugars in foods..anyways not sure if this is new info for us all but it helps to refresh our minds..another class tonite.. hope you are all having a great day and dont mind me sharing my info(((((hugs)))) rosey

hi... i'm new on this site too but unlike most of you I have been type II for over 10 years. I have never understood proper diet for me tho. I go overboard and freak out over any carbs, then I forget to look at fat and calories. I did have everything under control and was within normal limits for a while, at the time I was working out at the gym 5 days/week and having grilled salmon or salads for dinner every night. That was several years ago tho. I guess maybe I've been fortunate that I've never had any complications or felt sick at all, or maybe that's not so fortunate cuz I have pretty much ignored my diabetes for years. hmmmmm can you be in denial for 10+ years? I do take Actos and also Lipitor for high cholestoral. My bp is great! I quit smoking in March which led to an almost 30 lb gain is what shocked me into action.

So here I am, ready to start eating right and shaping my frame of mind In reading your posts, I see a lot of help and inspiration. Best of luck you all of you!

Wow, iwmonn, you are AWESOME - quitting smoking that is. I quit 6/6/05 and still struggling. In teh past I have always gained 20 lbs when I quit. I didn't this time, but i never lost the 60 from the past 3 major quits!
You will get a handle on the diet/diabetes thing if you put your mind to it. If you can quit smoking I REALLY believe that you can DO ANYTHING!
AKrosey - my doc would FREAK OUT if I got to 160 after a meal. I really think she's much too much into tight control for me. Thanks for the info!
I had an unexpected visitor today - Aunt Flo. Perhaps she is the reason I haven't lost anything in 5 days even after being pretty darned good on the eating and walking. We shall see when she leaves.

Hi everyone.. another class tonite..we had to test our blood when we got there.. then we had ameal provided by them.. we had to figure out the carbs etc..then we exercised yup in front of strangers and then we learned about colesteral and good fats and bad and protein portions.. before we left we tested our blood again.. mine was the only one that was lower after i ate.. it must have been the exercise.. which they stress as very key in controlling your diabetes.. they ecomennd at least 15 to 30 mint aday of moderate exercise .. i think i can do this..hope this is helping some of you.. will let you know what i learn tomorrow..its all pretty basic but im learning new ways to manage and like the classes..kim.. the guide lines that they use are from the american diabete ***..your sugars should be below 130 or more fasting.. but when you eat they go up.. and they dont want the up cycle to be more than 160.. then they come down again..like a roller coaster..up down up down..by testing before eating and 2 hrs after you can find our what foods make your sugars go crazy high and avoid them..or control the amount of carbs you can tolerate as we are all diff..even tho we all have diabetes..of course you should always do as your dr wants..but if your unhappy get a 2nd opinion..((((((hugs)))) rosey
