  • Quote: Hi, I am new here, actually I am new to posting on any type of site so please bear with me. I have been diabetic for over 2 years now and not really watching what I was doing. Now it is two years later, I am 20 lbs more than I was two years ago and am on all kinds of meds to try to get it in control. My real problem is getting started - how do I get it all back in control? Looking at WW, JC and doing it on my own - any ideas on how one finds the right program for them and the encouragement to go on?
Welcome! I can't completely answer your question. But I can tell you I started WW online today. I went to www.weightwatchers.com and joined online. It is cheaper then meetings... and I don't have local meetings in my area so I use these boards for support. I think doing WW and eating several smaller meals a day is going to make a difference. I am a prediabetic. So I am not as far along as you are. But you can go to the WW site and check it out. Again welcome and good luck.
  • Thanks TMunday
Thanks for the encouragment TMunday. I know I have to do something as I now weigh 271lbs and I am sooo tired and sore all the time from lugging all this weight around. I guess the first step is doing something... so I think I am going to join JC for a short time to get on track. Looking forward to the support from these boards and hope I can give some back. Good luck with ww online, keep me posted on your progress.
  • Your most welcome. Keep us posted as to how your doing as well.
  • Hi everyone.. ive been out of town for a few days.. was visiting my daughter and grandkids.. managed to do some shopping at wallmart(we dont have one ) had agreat time but glad to be home.. it sure is easier to maintain diet when you are at home..hello to the newbies im rosey from alaska.. i count carbs.. used to follow ww but after a dietician class i realized i was eating to much and too many carbs..i really recommend a diebetic eating class for anyone starting out and a refresher for us who have been at this awhile.. i learned alot..anyways welcome to our group.. havent heard from nusugar or rosetta in awhile hope you are both doing ok..its raining today but i feel like being lazy so its a good day for a pot of soup and a good book..(((((hugs))) rosey

I have a question for you guys. I went shopping today and I have been wanting a chocolate chip cookie or an oreo like cookie! I was recently diagnosed with prediabetes so I am seriously trying to control my sugars so I don't have a serious problem with diabetes later. I read all of the sugar free cookie labels in the store. ALL of them have some kind of sugars in them! I was going to make my own but of course the new splenda brown sugar is not available at our Krogers yet. And I don't have a recipe (there is one on the splenda brown sugar package) for it either.

Do you all buy the sugar free cookies? What do I need to watch out for when shopping? Of course I am following Weight Watchers so I would like to keep it low in points. But I want to make sure whatever I do is safe for diabetics.

    Thanks in advance for everything!
  • watch carbs and sugars. eat less pasta, peas and bread. go to diabetic classesand they will tell you what to watch. good luck. glen
  • Hi Tmunday..i just took those diebetic classes and i learned to count carbs..just becuz its sugar free doesnt always make it the best choice.. read your labels and compare the carbs..some sfree stuff is higher in carbs than the real deal.. you should have 3-4 servings of carb per meal.. one serving is 15 grams..so divide that into the carb per serving and you get the carb count..portion control is impt too..its easy once you get the hang of it.. of course avoid high sugar foods sodas and deserts etc but was told if i wanted a cookie kike you have been craving then have it but count the carbs as a serving and eat less carbs your next meal..its kinda of abalancing act.. hope this helps you.. i find if i have a craving i might as well eat a small amount of it as i usually eat to much of other things trying to satisfy that one urge..good luck.. ((((hugs))))) rosey its still snowing but melting as it hits the ground ugh im not ready for winter..
  • Glen, thanks but all of the people in the dietition/diabetic feilds around here only care about money! If you don't have it they don't want to help you.

rosey.............. Thanks! I was reading the sugars content on the package and it was pretty high. I am learning that I have got to eat several small meals/snacks in a day or I end up feeling blah. But I am trying to watch everything. I really do not want to become insulin dependent. I printed out your post so I can remember what you said so I can put it to use. Thanks again. I sure apprecaite your help.

Gotta go get some breakfast. Thanks for your help.
  • Just a quick check in: I have lost another 3 lbs.
Was gone visiting for almost a month. Got lots to do berfore winter and thru it on the inside. Most of my bs numbers were in the 100s range. My doc tried to get me on another pill b/c he wants it to 100. I bulled him as I want to stay on this new one only as it doesn't bloat my body and cause me to gain weight. I feel great for the first time in about 3 years and I'm not chancing going bact to bloated and miserable. I told him I'd keep working on it. If I can twik my diet more, exercise more and lose more- I feel like I can get there eventually and we can both be happy.
    Have a great day!
  • hi, i watch my carbs, solidum, sugar, fat and calories. i was wonderin is splenda safe for me and do i stay with sweet-n-low? i lose 3 lbs so im doing good.
