Yes, kale is becoming so popular for it's health benefits. It does have a downside, though. If eaten raw it can affect your thyroid function, along with other cruciferous vegetables. Lucky for me, I don't like many raw vegetables or smoothies. I only like them cooked. Also, my step-son is not allowed to eat anything containing vitamin K because he is on Courmadin.
http://commonhealth.wbur.org/2014/01...-eat-around-it |
Yes, I thought about the Vitamin K. No way DH would eat it if he could. Shame he can't because it is so good for us. I eat it in my eggs.
I am pretty much committed to SBD. I would like to join the official on line group and almost did, but couldn't see spending the money when there is a free support group here and on 2 other websites + the one on FB. I did the free questionnaire on the official SBD site and recommended I eat smaller meals and snacks along with a Supercharge exercise 20 minutes a day. I have both the SBD books and will re-read and do the Supercharge exercise using my recumbent bike. I have a friend who wants to do this with me which will make this easier for me. Can't hurt DH either. This is actually Day 3 on Phase 1, but since I've been easing into it, I am making this my official Day 1 since I am finally back down today in line with my ticker. I am keeping track on MFP so I can keep up with the calorie/carb count. I actually am enjoying this. SBD/FB had recipe for making LC ice cream using the NSA fudgescicles, ricotta cheese and cool whip. I forgot to get the fudgescicles. So I took unsweetened cocoa, ricotta chees and cool whip with a little bit of Stevia and mixed it together and ate it more as a pudding than an ice cream. I probably could have froze it a little for ice cream as well. I had that for dinner last night. FBS was 155 this morning. So that was good too. |
Hi gang: just checking in after a long time.
Haven't been checking BS for a while, and focusing on getting more exercise and watching what I eat. Was about to quit my ww plan, but the new plan came out and I decided to try to track and try the new program. It is not as punishing for low carb eaters, as protein is encouraged more and fat not punished as much. I am stuck at home today, have a snow day, its too treacherous to drive. I got on the treadmill for a while though!. Have a good day everyone. |
CarolSue about 10 mins....every hour. That hour rest goes by fast lol.
Today I inhaled cookies from my freezer,,,,they have been there for months not sure why I had to have them today but I did. I don't no if I even tasted them. Ughhhh back on track after supper ( cuz I made eggs and sausage sage so made toast with it) and doing my mini walks tonight. I'm sure the scale will jump overnight |
Hi Mad! Good to see you and hear that you are doing well and have found a plan that works for you.
p.a. 10 minutes isn't bad. I will have to try that, but I really doubt if I will do it every hour. I think every time I have to go down to the basement for something I can jump on the treadmill for 10 minutes. That's exactly why my cookies went home with my company. It's very easy to defrost them LOL |
Just checking in after a long time. I do read but don't post.
Just signed up for WW online because of the new programme. I think I'll still be able to use some of my South Beach Recipes. I just have to get this darned weight under control. I must confess I have not been getting bloodwork done, testing or taking my meds. :nono: That has to change, starting now. I am planning to finish my term as Treasurer of the Mill and focus on me - the term ends mid-June. In the meantime I am going to try to focus more on ME and my health. And yes, I will face the music and get my HA1C tested ... soon. |
Well, since everyone else is showing up, I guess I will to.
I've been eating really healthy lately - lots of veg, some fruit, protein, low on simple carbs. BUT - I still haven't moved my fat A$$. ARGH, it's making me crazy. I know I will feel better, sleep better, possibly lose more weight. So where the heck is the disconnect? I tend to think, rethink and yes rationalize myself up the wazoo. ENOUGH! I'm gonna JUST DO IT. I can think afterwards. Greetings and best wishes to all. |
It's not as bad as it sounds really,,,,I sit around way too much in the winter. And this way I really feel like I'm doing something during the day. Last night I was watching tv and in 2 hours I got in over 3000 steps ...
|
Ruth and Cindy! Great to see you both! This makes me want to break into a chorus of Hail Hail The Gang's All Here. LOL
Ruth, I think you need to stop in here more often so we can give you a proper pep talk about bloodwork, testing and meds. Please put us on your schedule, we miss you! Cindy, I am having the same problem getting my exercise started! Good job with the food, though. p.a. When I do exercise, I usually do it while watching my soaps from 12:30 - 2 PM, but not necessarily the whole time. I have never checked to see how many steps I get in during that time. I just look at the total for the day. I will have to check it out. Maybe I will be curious enough about it to actually get myself moving! There are so many ways to sneak extra exercise into our day if we Just Do It like the Nike ad! Seeing the activity on this thread makes me so happy!! |
this is nice, I was thinking of you Ruth, this morning.
A big part of getting things under control for me relates to sleep. As those who know me know, I have been suffering with insomnia for several years. It is made worse by my job, which requires me to be up some nights. I found that a low dose anti-depressant helped with the insomnia, but certain side effects made me need to get off of it. But the insomnia got worse again. Recently my doc had me try a different anti-depressant at a very low dose and that seems to help. I have more energy again, and am sleeping better, and even lost a couple of pounds without trying, just by not craving foods to keep me energized. Now I am furthering that with being more watchful. I am not doing low carb, but controlled carb, and tracking using the ww site. Will just see how it goes. Any one using a step tracker? I had a fitbit, which I lost, and am considering something new, but haven't decided which. |
Mad, I have trouble sleeping, too, but it has improved since I retired. I still wake up during the night, but I'm able to fall back to sleep since I know I don't have to get up for work. It took a few years to get to this point. I know I still don't get as much sleep as I should and sleep is very important for weight loss. I am able to nap occasionally if I do have a bad night, but I try not to. I fall asleep in a matter of minutes but my problem is staying asleep more than a few hours. They say you don't require as much sleep as you age, but I don't think that's true. You still need good sleep, but it's harder to get.
I have a Fitbit One. I also have a Fitbit Zip that I found new at Goodwill for $2. I don't think they realized what it was. I tried it out and it works, but I have it put away in case my One breaks or I lose it. Right now I track my food on Fitday but I am considering starting to track on my Fitbit Dashboard because I can also track water. I'm really bad at drinking my water, especially when it's cold, like now. |
Mad and Ruthie Glad to see you here. I've missed you both. Thanks for sharing about WW new program. I've checked it out as one of the girls on 3fc thread put some info about it on her blog. I think I will join online at the end of the month. I don't want to put anything else on my credit card until then so it won't go on this month. The formula for figuring pts looks like a lot, but I think counting the sugar content of something will be very helpful. I might can figure it out without joining, but it won't hurt to read what others are doing and get the support and the newsletter might be helpful as well. WebMD seems to think it is a good plan.
Not much changed here. Still following the plan I'm on. More of a "My Plan". We went out to eat yesterday at DH favorite Golden Corral for his fist. I had a good plan, but did add some carbs I don't usually eat along with my favorite piece of cake. Small piece, but still so high in carbs and calories. I am up my usual 3 lbs after eating there. According to MFP they put so much salt in their food. Even took my mild diuretic and still up. I will need to drink a lot of water today to flush it out which isn't easy for me to do this time of the year when it is so cold. |
Pattygirl
I find water weight takes a few days to go back down. So don't stress it. Ruth Hi kiddo, you were the moderator of this thread when I first came. Glad to see you back here. Fatmad Insomnia's tough. My morning antidepressant revs me up (which I need), but I need something to help me sleep. MD finally settled on adding a very old antidepressant which has the side effect of inducing sleep. I've been good on that for years. p.a. You go girl, right back on track. YAY you! CarolSue I found it helpful to tie my exercise to something else. Example - I decided to tie exercise to after lunch, early afternoon, which is when I have the least energy. I'll let you know the results. |
I read about the new WW plan and some of the old members said that they don't like it. They said that with the old points plan they could eat whatever they wanted as long as they counted the points, but with this new plan the points are based on the nutritional value of the food. I think it could go both ways. If you are one who cannot do without your favorite foods the old plan is better for you, but in the long run, we are much better off if we eat foods with more nutrition. Good luck to both of you with the plan.
Cindy, I agree with you about the timing of exercise. Many people like to do it first thing in the morning to make sure they do it. I won't do that because I have heart disease and I heard that early morning is the worst time for heart attacks. When I worked I had to wait until evening to exercise, but many times I just didn't have enough energy to do it by then. That's why now I find the best time for me is in the afternoon. When I finish, it's time to start making dinner. |
ahh trish, truthfully, I think eating out is really hard when watching out weight and sugars.
Today, we all decided to order take out indian food for our meeting day. Everyone was just craving those flavours. The nice thing was that I didn't have such an urge to over eat, since it came in take out containers that we could take home afterward. Even so, that was 18 of my 30 points today. I also forgot to take my metformin this morning, as I ate my breakfast in the car on the way to the hairdresser and left my pills at home. Interesting side effect, I am sure it affected my sugars, I was thirsty from noon onward. Just like when my sugars first went out whack . Hoping to get some x-c skiing in this weekend. I have the weekend off and I want to enjoy all this snow. hope everyone is warm and toasty, in spite of the weather. |
Mad I wonder if seeing how high some of the carb pts are would help me not want them. Spending 18 pts when you only have 30 might make me think about what I'm doing. I think not having to count the good carbs which seems to happen when I tried the formula the lady shared on 3fc is very encouraging. I use MFP and when I put all my veggies for salad really add up. I would like to find something that would help me stay OP. Enjoy your days off.
Been OP today and did my 25 minutes on the recumbent bike. Just need to have more days OP than off. |
Just to clarify ... I have not forgotten I am the mod/admin on this as well as other groups. I read but have not posted as I am not someone who checks and worries about BGL every day.
That being said, it may change. When I was getting foot care at the Clinic on Wednesday, Nurse Darlene insisted I get my HA1C checked - bad timing after the Christmas and holiday transgressions. I will get the results today and am not expecting to be happy. |
I hope none of our members here are in the path of the major snow storm that's on it's way. We are on the edge are only expecting a couple inches of snow, but many other areas are going to get hammered. Stay safe.
Ruth, I doubt if your A1c is going to be so terrible. Although you're not posting here, I see you posting on other threads and I know you are health conscious and watching what you eat. I do think it's a good thing the nurse pushed you to get your bloodwork done, though, as it's best to know for sure. I need to check BG often because I know I'm having a problem, but normally, type 2s who are in control are not required to do all this testing. Having said that, we still miss you and are glad to hear from you! Trish, I wouldn't worry about carb counts on MFP if I know they are from vegetables/salads etc. They are not carbs that will spike blood sugar or be detrimental to your weight loss. The same with fat. If you know you ate healthy fats, they still show up as fats, but are the ones we are supposed to eat. Fitday shows total fat, but also breaks it down between, sat fat and healthy fat like mono fat or polyunsaturated. Mad, the first time I tried WW Points Program my points would be gone by 11AM. I did not do well with it at all. LOL I was not in a good weight-loss frame of mind. This more recent time I did it I did very well. I did low carb as far as starchy carbs were concerned and filled up on veggies, which were 0 points. I quit because of the cost, and I couldn't sustain the plan without the meetings. |
Well. I feel perfectly fine but the darned HA1C is up to 8.7 so ... I will focus on correcting my bad habits (including letting meds run out) and get it retested in 8 weeks.
I think I am going to set up a little check list in the kitchen for morning meds and Victoza shot. Evening shouldn't be a problem since I always take that low dose aspirin. Ticker is not lying this morning - goldurnit! I certainly won't be posting daily since I am way too busy - in fact, I am planning to give up the admin/mod part of my membership. I will also keep track of my food calories online but will spare everyone the details. |
CarolSue
Hard to believe after last winter, but Boston is not expected to have much snow with this storm. I'll believe it when I see it! Ruth My MD said that she's surprised when any patient comes in with a full list of BG tests. She mostly goes by the A1c tests. I had ignored my diet for months a couple of years ago, and ended up in the 9s. Stupid diabetes is a sneaky one. Fatmad Enjoy your x-c skiing, said to be wonderful overall exercising! Pattygirl From being taught about diabetes at Joslin Clinic, they really only worry about the carbs in fruit and starchy foods. Hope that helps. |
Hello!
I was just recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and my doctor instantly put me on Metformin (which I should have been taking all along for prediabetes, but boy am I a stubborn twit). I'm still in the adjusting to it stage and should be upping my dose next week. The GI issues aren't really that big a deal to me considering I usually have the opposite problem LOL. I go back to the Dr in two weeks and he's saying he wants to put me on some more meds likely, but I really really don't want that. I've lost 5 lbs as of this morning which I know is mostly holiday water weight gain. My A1C was 8.1 and my non fasting at the time of my last appt was 160 (I'd had a sugary coffee drink prior to my appt which wasn't supposed to have anything to do with blood sugar LOL). I'm supposed to be testing every morning, but my goodness I just plain forget till I'm at work. Bought a new meter to specifically leave up at my desk so I can quit doing that. I suppose my question is: I'm back on my keto diet that I was on prior to the holidays. Any chance my blood sugar will improve enough that I can avoid additional meds in two weeks? I'm eating very little carbs and the only intentional sugar I get at all is first thing in the morning and it's in my coffee creamer (hard to find the sugar free version in my area and it's only 3 g). I'm using liquid splenda for everything else. I'm hoping to wean myself to heavy cream and just splenda soon and I'm watching protein. I did strict keto for about 5 months, so cutting my carbs isn't a big deal to me. I regret ever quitting as this WOE is easy for me to be satisfied with 1200 cals a day without starving. I know it's not necessary for type 2 to go that low on carbs, but I like the lifestyle. I had lost a good deal of weight and I had thought my blood sugar had actually improved. I went off the wagon prior to Thanksgiving (little cheats that led to big cheats and yeah) and just got back to it strictly this past Monday. Funny, not sure if it's the met or what, but I've had NO cravings at all. My mother is type 1, which is a totally different beast than 2, but I grew up watching her do insulin shots every morning and I just refuse for that to ever be me. I'm determined to do whatever it takes to either reverse this issue or manage it entirely with diet. I know all to well how hard my mom struggles. :( Doctor says Metformin helps with weight loss too, but not so sure about that. Since I obviously had horrid glucose issues last time on keto, that may be why I lost slower than I should have. Maybe the met will help with that? Not that I'm racing really to lose, just wondering. I'm also not sure exactly what else he's thinking about putting me on, I just know I don't want insulin. Eh, that's my rant anyhow. Sorry to be long winded. TL: DR - will cutting carbs for three weeks help with blood sugar tests at my next appt? Also, if anyone is on metformin, is it better to take it with a meal or am I fine continuing to take it with my coffee in the am? |
Hi Fickleheart. Welcome to the thread! Lots of questions. I can only tell you of my experience, but everyone is different when it comes to diabetes. You will not have any effect on your A1c in 2-3 weeks, because that shows average blood sugar for the past 3 months. But if you stay away from starchy carbs and get some exercise, your blood sugar levels should come down. As far as when to take your Metformin, they say to take it with food to lessen the GI upset, but if it doesn't cause problems for you, you can take it when you want to. When the doctor increases the dose you will probably be prescribed twice a day to keep the does about 12 hours apart. I recently found that taking it at bedtime lowers my fasting levels in the morning. That's just me.
As far as starting any other meds, you can ask your doctor to give you some time to regulate your blood sugar on your own with diet and exercise before he gives you any other medication. Hi might agree to let you try and then do another A1c in 3 months to see if you've improved it enough to limit your meds to Metformin. Metformin is relatively harmless, but other meds can cause problems. Right now I am working to improve my glucose enough to stop or limit the Amaryl he has me on. It is known to cause weight gain and is probably a part of why I am having trouble losing. Some others may chime in with other suggestions. Good luck to you and let us know how things go. |
Fickleheart WELCOME!!!
I am lurking/reading, but not posting much right now. Nothing much to report. I've decided to use a Low Carb Whey Protein Powder for 2 meals and then eat one meal each day which I will eat with DH around 3ish to shrink my stomach. DGS told me when he went home for Christmas holiday that he found that his stomach had shrink. He had been using a protein drink that I gave him because it had too many carbs and I couldn't drink it. He used it last semester. Then I got to thinking about of the tv ads (I think it was Nutrisystem) I've been seeing and they mentioned shakes. Someone told me they use shakes to jump start weight loss. I've decided that if I can the weight off that the blood glucose will take care of itself. It surely can't hurt. I certainly haven't done much by just trying to bring the fbs down so far and my body seems to resist consistent weight loss. It is time to do something different if I want to get this under control, because if I don't, I will be sitting here next year gaining rather than losing. I've been blessed to be as healthy as I am, but it might not stay that way if I don't do something to make it happen. As they say to keep doing the same thing expecting different results is insane. Still haven't ruled out WW new program. Can't just thinking of this as just a blood glucose problem. I've often heard that you don't die from diabetes, you die from the complications caused by diabetes. Time for me to have some wisdom in this situation I find myself in. Sorry, just talking to myself. I know what I either can't change or don't seem to be able to so it is time to rethink what I'm doing and make the necessary changes I can make. We have snow and ice and I don't get out in it because I'm not taking any chances of falling in this stuff. So just staying in wrapped up to stay warm. Those of you north of me who have this worse than we do, stay safe and warm. |
Trish, I think I am the only other one who is in the path of this storm as long as it doesn't reach Cindy in Boston. We got 8.5 inches. The road have been plowed and salted and are now clear, but it seems it's still snowing farther east and getting bad enough to close roads. I hope everyone is OK.
|
Thanks for the reply Wannabehealthy and the welcome pattygirl63.
So far the tummy upset happens no matter when I take it, or with/without food, although I notice it more after I eat something fatty. I can live with that though. It's not that big of an issue. I think I might go ahead and start upping the dosage a week early since the GI upset is pretty mild so far. He told me 2 weeks and it's been a week. That'll put me at 1000mg a day. Doing pretty good food wise, despite some major temptations from my hubby and bff. I don't think they quite realize how drastic my diet is changing, but it's okay. Weather isn't being conducive to walking atm, but next week it's going to warm up a bit and I can get back to it. Hope you guys up North are staying safe and warm. While not nearly as cold here, it's colder than normal right now in Florida. I'm in the northern part LOL, so we get more of winter than our central and southern friends. I wouldn't know how to act in a blizzard though. I'll be happy to answer any hurricane questions though :P |

Something that is almost a guaranteed diuretic for me is green tea. I happen to like the taste and it helps me to keep hydrated. Most herbal teas will have a diuretic effect for me as well. If you're sensitive to caffiene, try something herbal. I'm partial to peppermint tea and a brand called Good Earth Sweet and Spicy. It's a bit like the old Constant Comment tea. |
Evening everyone
Nice to see some new ( to me) faces.. Hope everyone is safe and warm Trish my best friend had weight loss surgery and for 3 wks she could only drink protein drinks (sugar free ones) 4 times a day,,,before her surgery. She lost 30 pounds in 3 wks ,,,,,, hi Ficklehearts and Fatmad Ruth sneaky nurse Darlene ;) Ok off for the night... |
Well, today I am officially elderly. LOL Today is my birthday, and I am 70 years old. I am the only member of my immediate family to live to 70, so I am happy to make it. I'm not doing anything special. It's just special to still be alive. LOL
Vickie, I drink green tea and don't notice that it does anything special for me, but I drink it anyway because of the good things I hear. I don't notice any particular fluid retention. When my weight goes up, it's usually because I ate too much. LOL My rings are going round and round, but the scale isn't going down and down p.a. I have some when protein but never drink it because I don't feel that I "ate" with a shake and would still want food. Fickle, I realize that it seems cold where you live when it's colder than normal. I visited FL when I was younger, but don't think I could take the humidity now that I'm older. Maybe I could handle being a Snowbird. Cindy, hope the snow storm didn't reach you this time! |
Carol Sue HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! I'm 72 and don't feel elderly. I've lived 2 years longer than my Mama's oldest sister who was the only sibling that lived to be 70. Their Dad died at 45 and their Mother lived to be 80. My Daddy who is 92, his brother and some of his cousins and an aunt lived to be in their 90s. So I have a good chance of living longer. LOL You have a great day.
Vickie I have been thinking about drinking more green tea. I can't drink a lot of it because of the Metformin that I take as the two together makes the side effects of the Metformin worse. My day of 2 shakes didn't work. Last night I was hungry after my protein treat. It has never left me hungry when I've used it before. I joined WW online and then cancelled it. I think you have to do everything with the smart phone and I don't want to do that. Everything is online and too complicated for me. I will stick with what I'm doing. I wasn't impressed. Edited to say that the cancellation of WW online wouldn't go through until April. So I didn't cancel. I found a video explaining how to use the site so will be doing WW to see how things go. |
CarolSue
We got about 4 inches here in Boston, about half of what you got. DH turned 70 recently. Kinda blew my mind. Sorry to hear you're the first family member to reach 70. Take extra good care of yourself. Fickle WELCOME! Glad to have you! Ah yes, the Metformin tummy issues. For me, they lasted about 3 months and then disappeared. So hang in there. I lost ten pounds from it, mostly because my taste buds were affected by it. YMMV. p.a Hi honey! Pattygirl I don't think it matters what plan we use, as long as it promotes health. It's the boring sticking to it when I'm bored/sad/mad that's the hard part. But every victory makes us stronger! |
happy birthday Carol!!!
|
Hi everyone:
I had a good weekend for exercise, but not so much for eating. Too much eating out and too much birthday partying with a 5 year old. Lilia was fun and I love her, but eating properly is hard when there is cake all the time. I did hot yoga, x-c skiing and some walking too. Back to reality and proper diet as of now. Fickle, welcome to you. The upset tummy on metformin will get better, but will reoccur whenever you increase the dose, but stick to your keto diet and you will be fine. If you can do low carb, you won't do harm and may do good. Its hard to stick to for some, so go for it if you can. I am enjoying reading everyone's posts, and wish you a happy birthday too, Carol Sue. have a good week everyone |
Happy Birthday Wannabehealthy. :)
We get a lot of snowbirds here. I'm seeing quite a few new states these days, and of course our Canadian friends. It always amuses me because you instantly tell the Floridian from the snowbird; anything below 65 calls for a sweater and long pants for us Floridians. It was in the 40's on Sat all day and our guests were wearing shorts and flip flops! Well, I do happen to wear sandals all year long though. I can't say anything about their footwear choices LOL. Pattygirl63 - I hear you on WW's. I do everything on my phone these days, but I really really do not like their new plan or the fact it is so smart phone heavy too. I haven't liked any of their plans since points plus. I get the need to shake things up for new members and money, but points plus worked really well for me and wish they could just leave well enough alone. And thanks Watercolor and Fatmad for the advice and welcome. Hello p.a. I increased my metformin dose on Friday and so far haven't had any extra tummy issues. In fact, they seem to be clearing up. Of course, I've been pretty much eating salad, grilled meats, and broccoli. I don't think there is much there to upset :P I'm doing keto, but watching calories too. Time to dust off my recipe book and go back to my yummy low carb meals I was preparing. My fasting BG was 114 on Sunday, which is the lowest it's been in months. So here's hoping the diet and the met will keep the Dr. happy next week. 6 lbs down so far. 13 more to go to get back to pre-Christmas weight which was the 207 (I refuse to change it because I am stubborn). Blah. I guess I have proven it is very much possible to gain 20 lbs in two months LOL I didn't think I ate that badly! |
Fatmad I remember when little Lilia was born. You always felt she was yours. I can't believe she is 5 yrs old. How time does fly.
FickleHearts When I married DH he lived in Coconut Creek in So. FL and we lived there for about 3 or 4 years before we moved to S.C. I lived in Central TX before that so I was used to the cold weather we have here. However, once I lived in So. FL and my body became accustomed to the weather there, I have had a difficult time getting use to the cold weather here. Although I am better this year, I still nearly freeze. Just haven't got my thick skin back. LOL Now that I've figured out how to use the new WW site, I think I'm going to like it. My beautician/friend and I met for coffee at Bojangles this morning. I went WW and checked the pts for their breakfast foods and saw really quick that I was NOT going to eat there. I could have done a lunch there and if I could figure out how to count without the bread I might have had a ham/cheese w/o biscuit, but I couldn't figure it out so I made one here with Canadian bacon w/Sarah Lee Multi-grain bread and spent 6 pts instead 12. I knew DH has been wanting a burger so I made me one on the multigrain bread and had a 2 oz fries and a glass of 0 fat milk all for 12 pts. So much better than eating out. I really don't like a lot of fat and DH is picky about the fat he eats so I believe this being lowfat will work out better for us. He does eat a lot of butter, but I can counter act some of that with lowfat foods. The fact that I am weighing and measuring will work out better for me. This is the way I ate the first time I was diabetic and got it under control within a couple of weeks. I cooked a whole Thanksgiving Dinner with desserts and all that everybody loved and raved about. Most of them never knew it was mostly a lowfat low sugar foods. DH will like this way of eating better. And I'm still staying relatively low carb while doing this. Probably less than 100 grams a day. I remember telling my doctor that I try to eat healthy foods and he said "Then you probably are eating too much of it and need to learn to eat less of it". I think he is right. I agree WW is more low carb friendly because of the way it counts the protein in foods. I love how it doesn't count most fruits and veggies. I can actually have the low glycemic fruits. I love grapefruit and will go back to eating it again. I am having a home made turkey/cheese chef salad for dinner tonight. I've walked enough today to earn 3 pts. I think the other thing that is helpful to me that I didn't like about MFP is that I don't see sodium counts in red. Since I drink a lot of water, tea and coffee each day, I don't really think I have to worry about that. My weight has been the same for 3 days and my FBS was back down. I think I need the fiber in the multigrain foods. I'm thinking that my body is adjusting to the new way of eating and hopefully I will start losing. I noticed with my experiencing with things that my bs seems to do better when I eat them. I plan to have a SBD Phase 2 kind of eating tomorrow and have oat meal for breakfast in the morning. Ruthie I've been leaning more toward South Beach Diet and realized this morning that WW Smart pts would work great with SBD Phase 2. In fact, I'm thinking of combining them. My problem with SBD was the lowfat part of it, but since the Smart pts works best with lowfat, there is no reason why I can't do SBD and use the WW SP with it for portion control. Guess I've bent y'all ear long enough. |
I forgot to share about the Metformin and tummy problems. I have noticed that since I've cut way back on the fat content that I take in that I am not having the problems any more.
I remembered that I couldn't understand why I had suddenly heaving problems when I had not had problems for years. When everybody started talking about adding CO to their coffee etc and that you need to eat more fat. Well, I began to notice that if I ate a lot of fat that I had the problem, but if I didn't eat much fat that I didn't. Fat is the culprit for me. I just can't handle eating much fat while taking Metformin. I did read info on Metformin the other day and found that it does cause gas. Oh well. LOL Any way, for future reference if you or someone you know is having tummy/potty problems with Metformin you might check how much fat you are eating. |
Trish, the new big thing is the ketogenic diet and 85% fat. My son is on it.

Carolr Good to see you. How are you? I know I see on low carb sites that a lot of people get break their stahls using extremely high fat, but I can't do that. Makes me physically ill. I don't cut out all fat, but I just cannot eat a lot of it either, because my body doesn't like it. Go figure.:?:

hi all: For those who don't want to use the smart phone apps for ww, you can use your laptop or other computer. The advantage of the phone apps is that you can track as you go. But I just do the laptop at the end of the day.
I miss the veggie track and water track from the old tracker and asked them to replace them. For me, it was like counting down. The new system may encourage those things by not counting points, but thats different from encouraging them by asking you to track them specifically. Did not exercise yesterday, too tired after an all nighter. But slept well after my early bedtime. Will get on the treadmill later if its too rainy when I am done work. I will be disappointed if my nice snow all goes away, its supposed to go above freezing and maybe rain. I would like to keep the snow. |
I'm doing the keto diet. It's pretty much induction level Atkins with more emphasis on fats than anything, but I have a hard time eating that much fat too. I don't like the bulletproof coffee with the cream and butter, so really my only fat intake during the day is from butter on my veggies, cheese, and oil that my food is cooked in. I do eat fatty meats like ribeyes/bacon occasionally. It's nice not to buy fat free anything and loading a plate of steamed broccoli down with butter seems counterproductive, but I lost a lot of weight on keto before the holidays. It works if you can be happy with little to no carbs.
I'm also watching calories because it's easy to over do it on Keto with all the fatty food. My typical day is coffee for breakfast, lunch with the hubby with some sort of meat/salad or veggie, and then pretty much the same for dinner. I notice the tummy problems are especially bad if I eat something cooked in too much oil, which is a problem sometimes when we eat out (here's looking at you local Mexican place). They seem to have tappered off the last few days though. Having weird BG readings. Last night before bed about 3 hours after dinner it was 108. This morning after fasting, it was 133?? I get the dawn effect and all, but geez. I took met before bed too. Is my monitor just screwy? I'm using two bayer contour next ones, one at work in the mornings and one at home for weekends and nights. They shouldn't be that off from each other. :| |
Thank you all for the birthday wishes. It was quiet, but enjoyable.
I am so happy seeing all these posts here! I can't believe I didn't post yesterday. I don't know what happened. LOL Mad, I have packed up all the snow in our area and shipped it to Ontario. I'm sure some others would be glad to do that, too! Fickle, take your home monitor to work some day and check them at the same time to see if they're the same. One time mine were way off from each other and when I opened a new bottle of strips they were the same. Sometimes you need to do a test with control solution, too. For years, I was a very hot person, and I don't mean that in a good way. LOL I was always warmer than everyone else in the room. In the past 5 years that has started to change and I'm freezing. I know my thyroid might have something to do with it because my numbers have changed, but not enough to put me on meds. I was never able to wear sweaters. The best I could do was long sleeve light weight tops. Now I have to wear a cardigan around home and can no longer take my coat off when we eat in a restaurant. I wear an extra tee shirt under my nightgown, and might have to start doing that every day, too. I think I would do well in FL and I would not be wearing shorts in 40 degree weather! Brrrr Trish, I guess the reason I never had much problem with Metformin is because I don't eat high fat. I cut back on fat years ago when I was having trouble with Gerd. The Gerd improved without the fat. I don't eat low fat foods, but don't purposely add fat. I read somewhere that even though high fat helps some people lose weight, it should not be done by diabetics. The fat has some effect on how your body works. I don't remember the details. Did you see something that said Green Tea interacts with Metformin, or is that just your own experience? I googled but couldn't find anything. I have Green Tea and drink it off and on but don't notice any difference. The past couple days I have been having dizziness. If you remember, I went through that a while back and it stopped when I started drinking more water. I haven't been drinking much water because it's so cold, but today I am starting back on my water. I let the bottle sit out for a while to get closer to room temperature. Cindy, I lost 15 lbs from the initial dose of Metformin. The only side effect I had was nausea. I could only eat a few bites before it set in. I was so disappointed when that went away because I really needed to lose more. I wasn't even 100% sure that the Metformin caused the nausea because that was right after my heart surgery and that could have been the cause. Hi Carolr, p.a., Ruth, and everyone else!! |
