Mad, the last time I did WW was a couple years ago and that's when I started eating lots of veggies, since they were zero points. When I did that, I eventually lost my cravings for sweets. I think eating all the veggies changed my taste buds. Most baked goods taste excessively sweet to me now and I can only eat a bite or two when I eat them at all.

Hi Everyone,
Fatmad So sorry about your friend. Having watched my Dear Mama go through it, I know how difficult it is. I think the only thing that makes it bearable is that we get to the place we don't want the to suffer any more. And as my Dad said, we don't have any choice. I heard today they believe they have a cure for cancer. Oh how I pray that they do. p.a. I only eat fruit in the morning. One serving with breakfast and one as a snack after my 30 minute exercise. WW gave me the option to up my exercise to 28 minutes a day so I'm doing around 30 minutes. Sometime a minute or two over or a little bit less. The main thing I'm doing is 4 miles a day. I still do the bike whether I do any other exercises each day. WW allows the housecleaning etc to count as exercise. As I've said before, it makes it easier to get myself moving. I'm supposed to earn 28 pts a week exercising and I already have 21 in 2 days. Casie Congratulations on your 5 lb loss. Anne There was a day when I exercised everyday without fail. In fact the first time I was diagnosed and got my bs under control, I exercised 45 minutes a day without fail besides all the other things I did. I lived a very busy life there for a while. But a few yrs back I stopped and it has been a real struggle to get back to doing it on a consistent basis. I finally decided to start where I was and set a goal and work toward it. There were times I only managed to do 1 day a week and some times I would exercise 4 days and then recently I went a whole week without exercising at all. Now I'm doing 31 minutes a day 6 days a week and hope to build back up to the 45 minutes. I am beginning to see that when I am exercising that there comes a point where my body strongly reacts to the exercise. It is like I suddenly have a strong alertness. I absolutely love that feeling. I hope this is what I heard my pastor say is that you will finally come to a point to where you absolutely look forward to exercise. In fact, where I used to dread exercising, I now have this feeling that I really want to exercise... almost crave it. Carol Sue I'm sorry about your knee. Remember years ago when I twisted my knee and DH DD was here? She had me keep it elevated and use alternate cold/heat on it. I even had to use the Hugo walker that was DH mothers for a while, but I don't seem to have as much problems as I used to have. I think another thing that helps my knee is the grapefruit I eat. I read years ago that there is something in the grapefruit that is good for the knee. Something about the organic substances that replaces the inorganic in the knee. However, I think I remember you can't eat grapefruit for some reason, but don't remember why. Meds? Ruth Glad you are doing well. Good to hear from you. |
Trish, I am not supposed to eat grapefruit since I am on a Statin, but I do eat a few sections now and then. I love grapefruit. When I worked at the pharmacy, one pharmacist gave me a big lecture about eating the grapefruit, but I went into the office computer and found exactly what it said about the grapefruit in the pharmacy notes. It said not to drink large amounts of grapefruit juice, and in () it said (a quart or more.) What I had was never near a quart or more. I was going to show that to the pharmacist but I didn't bother. Just continued to eat it in small amounts. I buy canned grapefruit sections and the can lasts me several days eating a couple sections at a time.
I read that people who do not exercise regularly show the most rapid improvement in fitness when they do start. The body is so happy to be moving! |
Carol Sue I remember that now. That is why I don't give it to Tony either, however, there isn't any way we would ever drink that much grapefruit juice at any time. LOL We don't drink fruit juice any way.
I've got my required exercise for the week finished already so everything I do after today will be bonus. I intend to do the bike at least 5 days a week. So I have 2 more to do with the bike. Saturdays I usually get my exercise from walking stores and housework. This is so much fun and feels so good. :carrot: Don't mean to sound egotistical but I am so proud of myself because even I know that I am doing good. Plus my FBS is down in the 140s which is nice too. I know that I have finally found what not only works for me, but I can live with this the rest of my life. :) |
So sorry about your friend, fatmad. That has to be a hard time to face, knowing you have limited time.
So sorry about your DH too, p.a. My grandmother passed away last year from lung cancer, and it is so so hard to watch them suffer so. I didn't know you couldn't have grapefruit on statins, carol sue. Is it all citrus or just that one? My uncle has a grove down in central Fl and he sends us oranges and grapefruit every year. My other set of grandparents are both on statins and they always eat it. Loving the weather and loving the fact that it's no longer super dark after I get off work anymore. Did a 4 mile bike ride yesterday and got my walks on breaks in today. My booty is so sore. I think I'll skip the bike till it no longer hurts to sit LOL. I've kind of gotten lax with the BG testing. Last I did it was Sunday and it was 100 fasting. Dr. wants a log. Going to have to start reminding myself to do it 2 hours after dinner and in the am! I'm aiming for 185 by the end of May. That's roughly 8 lbs a month and I think it's doable. :D I was a size 8 last time I was 180 and quite happy. Not sure this time will be that way since I'm just now barely a 16, but here's hoping. |
Hi friends: I am doing better with exercise again as I do better with my back. I am still having significant pain, not sure if I am actually doing better or learning to live with it. I am frustrated about doing "everything right" to get better, but still having this much pain. I will call the doctor tomorrow and request an X-ray requisition, as my chiro and physio agree that i should be better by now.
Eating to plan, but weight steady. perhaps it will get better with more activity too. thanks for you good wishes for my friend. Her daughter is getting married in the hospital chapel this evening, as we don't have much time left. Her son plans to marry on the weekend. Things will be as good as possible. |

Here is an article I just googled about statins and grapefruit. It's not just the juice, Trish, but the grapefruit itself, too. This article names 2 statins which are the culprits and I take the lovastatin, but have cut way back on my dose. It says it should be OK to have small amounts, and that is what I saw on the pharmacy notes, too. Casie, your grandparents should be able to eat it in moderation. Maybe the statin they are on are not the 2 mentioned. I have never heard that it was only 2 statins. Remember, not everything you read online is gospel. My knee is starting to feel a little better. I have been doing some leg lifts while sitting in a chair. Last night when I was lying in bed witching TV I was doing some arm exercises and then lying on my side doing leg lifts. I hope to get on my treadmill today since my knee isn't as swollen. |
A quick flyby. Thanks Carol Sue for the website. I'll check it out. DH takes Provastatin. Not sure of the spelling. Glad your knee is better take it easy. If it starts to hurt back off.
My FBG was 128 this morning. Obviously I do better on lowfat rather than low carb. No problem as long as it works. I had to make a run to store and now I have to clean and put away some veggies. BBL |
I did more research and found 2 places that said that Provastatin does NOT interact with grapefruit. It's only Lovastatin and Simvastatin, and to a lesser extent, Lipitor. But all of them say large amounts of grapefruit, and I never have a large amount. Just a couple segments occasionally. I could drink a quart of it a day, I like it that much, but don't. It makes the meds stay in your blood stream longer and could increase the side effects of muscle disorders and kidney damage. Nothing to play around with. If a med interacts with grapefruit, the pharmacist usually puts a sticker on the side of the bottle.

end of the week of ww, and still have a few flex points left. So oversell have done great.
Back pain a bit better today, but didn't sleep well last night because of the pain, but I didn't take any meds. I am not just taking them when things get moderately bad, because I just can't stay on them forever. Had a good physio session today, and hope the new exercises will help too. Have a good Friday everyone |
So happy it is Friday. Work has been especially difficult lately. May can't get here quick enough.
|
Everything is about the same here. Y'all have a nice weekend.

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. Cancer stinks. We just passed the 10 year anniversary of my mom's death from lymphoma. It still hurts. p.a. Sorry to hear you lost your husband, and so recently at that. Cancer really does stink. Hi everybody  |
It was such a beautiful day here yesterday. 71 and sunny. I guess everyone was out enjoying the weekend. It's supposed to go back to cold again, and maybe snow. Winter isn't over yet.
I have not been on plan the past few days. Eating more than I should, for no good reason. I hope to get back in line today. DH ate cake for breakfast so he didn't make my eggs for me. I am not hungry yet so I won't eat until I am. I will have scrambled eggs with some collard greens mixed in. I was reading my book on SuperFoods, so I'm back to healthy eating again. I'm hoping to go out for dinner where I can have a big salad, either grilled chicken, or tuna. It's hard for me to keep everything in the house for a good salad since I'm the only one eating it. Everything goes bad before I can eat it all. I wanted some orange peppers but they were $4.99 lb at the store yesterday. I don't think so!! I will look somewhere else. Maybe Aldi's. My book said that the orange peppers have the most nutrition, but there are different nutrients in the different color peppers. Who knew? DH will only eat green. Fickle, I can't remember what you said you do for a living. Good to see you here Cindy! Trish, I hope you weren't at the debate last night. I heard some sound bites and it seems like it was a rough and tumble crowd! LOL |
Yesterday DH and I went to Toronto to see DD and DSIL. We went out for brunch/lunch with them and I had a frittata with veggies and a latte, and didn't eat all the toast. So pretty happy with that, and ate a healthy supper of braised red cabbage and duck leg. Also did lots of walking. We took the dog to the trail in the morning before leaving, and walked from the kids' apartment to the restaurant, which was a good 15-20 minutes each way, of pretty brisk walking. DH drove, but on the way back, the back didn't like the driving, even from the passenger seat. In short, sitting seems to be the worst. And doing my physio exercises seems to make it worse to some extent. Will have to tell my physio about that.
Over all things are slightly better than a week ago. Carol Sue, hope you can get things working for you for salads etc. Its a real pain, I know. We have been buying a mix in a bag, (7 super foods) that includes Kale and brussels sprouts, and eating a bit most days. DH cuts a tomato into his, I add a bit of cucumber. We too have to be careful (and there's two of us) or we waste veggies, and you are right, at these prices, can't afford to throw out stuff. Its above freezing today, but not as warm as yesterday. Well, time for a walk with the dog for today. |
My breakfast was delicious! I was starting to get hungry, and food always tastes so much better when you're hungry. I cooked 3 slices of bacon and ate 2. DH will eat the other one. I sauteed 3 mushroom, sliced, and added a sprinkling of frozen spinach. (finish off the spinach before opening the collards) Then I added my 2 eggs to that. And I had a few sections of orange. Since I count calories and carb grams, it calculated out to 247 calories and 10 gm of carb. I know the fat was high from the bacon and the butter used to saute the mushrooms, but not excessively high. I know it would make my points much higher if I was doing WW. But I'm not. I think if I can make it through the whole day keeping my calories around 1200-1400 I will lose. Those eggs with the mushrooms and spinach....yum!
I don't mind eating bagged salad, but just when I start back buying it they start talking about recalls for e-coli and it scares me off. DH will eat a salad if it's just iceberg lettuce and shredded carrots. I like to add hearts of romaine, onions, pepper slices, radishes. Getting it in a restaurant works well for me, although I know they usually use bagged salads. I pretend I don't know. LOL This one restaurant we go to has a salad with a bed of greens topped with tuna salad. It's very good, and because of mayo in the tuna salad I don't have to use dressing. Then every other day I like to eat my sauteed kale with mushrooms, onions, and feta cheese. Your frittata was a good choice Mad. Toast temps me every time!! I'm sorry to hear your back was hurting on your trip. We got a new car and it has a lumbar support adjustment but I can't get it adjusted just right. I haven't been having much pain lately. It comes and goes for me. Sometimes fingers, sometimes elbow, sometimes shoulder, sometimes back. I have never been able to pin point what makes it come, or what makes it go. |
My WI wasn't so good today. I think I could have eaten everything in the house yesterday. Up 2.2 lbs today.:?: Back OP and water, water, water.
Here's hoping for a better day to turn into a great week. |
I have also been having a hungry day. Could have eaten non-stop. Have worked hard to put spaces between the food, but was still hungry. Kept eating "good" foods. But did cave and had 5 chips when DH got out his pringles. (damn him, why are they even in the house? and why did he get them out in front of me, and they weren't that good). But since then have finally stopped eating. Dug into the flex points for sure.
Made sure to get out walking. Back is still bad, had acupuncture today at physio. See if that helps a bit |
Just a quick update here -
Work has been far far busier now that they've implemented some new programs. I don't have as much time to post anymore. My blood glucose seems to have settled around 90-95 fasting, which I'm pretty satisfied with. I'm noticing that if I don't eat, metformin makes me incredibly queasy. I'm not purposefully not eating, I just had to work through lunch today and didn't get time to eat anything until a quest bar around 4:30. Ugh..... Won't do that again. Just going to have to explain to my boss I kinda need to eat. :P Back in the habit of working out. I rotate bike rides with walking to keep things interesting. Upgraded my fitbit charge to the fitbit charge HR and loving it so far. Although I'm noticing the calories I can eat are a bit higher and I'm just assuming it's because of my heart rate? /shrugs. Gained some TOM weight over the weekend and got back up to 214, but I know it's just water. Depressing nonetheless, but it'll go away. /crosses fingers. I also joined a Dietbet. Had a friend win $150 last year and thought, meh, why not. If anything, here's hoping it'll keep me straight. I HATE wasting money!!! Still going strong on keto, mostly. I need to stay away from movie theaters and popcorn. Keeping carbs under 100 on movie days is still "low carb" but definitely not keto. |
Mad, sometimes I have issues like that with DH's foods, but you have to remember, this is for life, and you will never be able to go through life with those foods never making an appearance. It has to come from you. Either you eat a small amount and accept it, or you stop and remember that they never taste as good as you think they will, and abstain. For the most part I have done the latter, but I still indulge once in a while.
Fickle, I have always wanted to do the Dietbet, but I'm afraid. I think it would be very good incentive, but I don't give myself enough credit to be able to lose and win. Not only that, but I don't trust them enough giving them my credit card info and I don't trust Paypal. A few years ago I set up a Paypal account and right after that my credit card was hacked. I closed the Paypal account and never used it again. I did something similar on a smaller scale at my job one time. We had an in-house nurse, and she ran the bet. Everyone got weighed once a week and put money in the kitty. At the end of the month, the person who lost the most weight won the kitty. It was on a lot smaller scale than Dietbet. Trish, we all have days like that. You are on track, girl. You can do this!! |
totally overate yesterday, but at least it was hungry eating. I truly never felt "full" or that I had overeaten. In the end it was about 50 points. yikes. I did eat protein and vegetable foods, other than the 6 pringles.
back is middling, i seem to be pretty good in the mornings, getting worse as the day goes on. DH gives me a little massage in the evenings, I take a pill and some herbs, put on a pain patch and try to sleep. Usually sleeping not too bad. Tried calling the doc today, as she wanted me to call in 2 weeks if not much better, but couldn't get through. Will try again tomorrow. I do think its time for an X-ray to make sure nothing else going on. I did get out for walks yesterday and today, hope to keep that up, the sunshine helps, but snowstorm coming tomorrow! |
So my nonfasting BG today two hours after lunch was 90. My Dr. said he wants me to up my met dose to 2500 next week. I'm not so sure I need too. I'm going to call him tomorrow and double check. It's been pretty dang good lately. I think it's my diet in conjunction with the exercise.
Still at 211.4 now for two days in a row Hoping this weekend I see a nice drop, but I'm still .6 lbs lighter than I was. Any loss is a loss! |
Yes, Fickle, I am wondering about the upping of dosage when it seems to be doing its job. And you are doing great with diet and exercise. Be really proud of yourself and your good habits. A good review seems like a good idea.
We are having interesting weather, lots of slippery roads here. But while I was in town for the chiropractor, got into the doc as well. Got some stronger pain meds (plain codeine) and an X-ray. I feel better with stronger meds, but the side effects are significant. TMI alert: I get really constipated, and that affects my weight loss. SO am also taking some stuff to keep me regular, hope it will help. |
Fickle You are doing very well. I don't think I would up the Met if you don't need to. I think I messed myself up doing that. I started out with 500 mg. Then the doc raised it to 1000 mg a day. I was doing very well with it back then, but I wanted to work it up to 2000 so he let me as long as I had no problem with it. Now there are times I have problems with 500 mg and I really think I need to go up to 1000 and may see if he will work me up to that.
Carol Sue You mentioned taking 850 mg Met. Makes me wonder if there is a 250 mg Met. I'm thinking I might could take 250 in the morning and 500 at night. I will have to discuss that with my doctor when I see him next month. Fatmad Do you know if there is a 250 mg Met? I'm glad you finally got some meds to help ease your pain. I do pray you keep improving and the x-ray turns out ok. I too have been having trouble with constant hunger. So I'm going back to using my protein powder shakes 2x a day. I heard that Nutrisystem bought out SBD and they advertise 2 shakes a day. Then someone told me that they have you drink a shake twice a day for a jumpstart weight loss. I think buying the V-Day candy set me off to crave sweets. I don't have any sweets to eat and won't buy them, but I end up eating a lot of other things. I have this Designer Whey Protein Powder I bought before the holidays so I decided it might be a good idea for me to drink one for breakfast and another one for dinner in order to get rid of these crazy cravings. On WW SP milk is to expensive pts wise even FF milk so I am using unsweetened Vanilla Almond milk for my shakes. I saw an oatmeal shake on WW so I make it for breakfast for 4 pts. and 3 pts for dinner. This leaves me 23 pts to spread throughout the day for lunch and snacks. Hopefully I can use this to get rid of the stupid cravings and help me stay within my 30 pts. I hope everyone is doing well. |
Trish, I googled Metformin dosage and it does not come in 250mg. Some people say regular Metformin can be cut in half. If there is a score line you can definitely cut it in half, but if not you could probably use a pill splitter. I use that for my Glimiperide.
I heard about the storms in the south. I hope you're safe!! Mad, every time my surgeon prescribed narcotic pain meds he told me to take a stool softener. I never had a problem. There are several different things you can take for it. When my DH was taking pain med he would not take the stool softener, so I made jello and added Miralax to it. He never knew. LOL Fickle, I agree with the others that you should not need to increase your Metformin. I think the reason doctors increase the dose is because it's relatively harmless, but beneficial for other reasons. But what meds you take is up to you in the end. You pay your doctor to advise you, but the final decision should always be yours. That is how my relationship with my doctor has always been, and he's been my doctor for over 20 years. |
Morning everyone
For some reason my iPad decided to use a different format for this site...I was so confused! Finally got it to work. Had my 3 month blood work done this week,,,my A1c is good still,,,my fasting number was a little high r then normal. I had to fast for 12 hours and my levels dropped too low during the night so I took .5 of a glucose tablet so of course my fasting number was higher then normal for the test, Murphy's law,,, I was worried about my cholesterol with going lower carb but it's better then it was. :) Carol that's good advice about your dr advising you but decision is ours. We tend to see their word as law sometimes..I know I do. Trish try more protein for that hunger feeling. I believe it's low in points on the new plan as well. Boiled eggs,,pc of cheese,,,nuts all work for me Mad slipping and sliding here too,,, narcotics are constipating. Going lower carb does that to me as well so I try to have some Greek yogurt each day. Ficklehearts a loss is a loss....good for you! |
p.a. it is my belief and also of many others, that high cholesterol is caused by a high carb diet, not by LC. My cholesterol dropped significantly after I went low carb. Good for you on the good A1c.
We're getting some snow now but we're home for the day so it's all good! |
p.a. Thanks. I agree. The Whey Protein has 20 g of protein. I believe it will help drinking 2 of these a day. And it fits into the new WW plan very well.
Carol Sue We didn't get much rain in the storm. However last night we did get a lot of high wind so strong it moved the basketball net clear across the drive way. Thank God DGS car wasn't sitting there. The strange thing is that it isn't easy to move so had to be a very strong wind. LOL I lights went out in the whole neighborhood. DGS heard on his cell phone that 3300 residents had been without power because the wind blew a tree over on power lines. DGS came in just after the power went out and said the people across lake from us had power, so we had thought it was just our neighborhood. I told him it couldn't be from the wind because all our wires etc are underground in this neighborhood so it was hit somewhere before it got to us. LOL. I'm really beginning to get excited because we are talking to a realtor for new homes going up close to my sister in TX. She has driven through the new addition for me and says the houses are nice. They have a house plan ready for move in for sale with the floor plan I want, so she is going to take her husband and let him check out everything and take pictures of it to send me sometime this weekend. It is in my price range and a very reputable company that builds quality homes. We have the option to change some of the things to fit us. It takes six months to build so we now have to decided when to go, pick out the lot, etc that we want and get them started on building it. My sister said if our house sales before the house is ready that we can stay with them until we can move in. One good thing is that I will be getting lots of exercise going through things to decide what we want to take, sale or get rid of. I really want to lose weight before we move. |
Hey Trish, I'm excited for you if thats a move that would suit you well. See how things go.
Yes, friends, I know I will have to learn to get used to living in a world with many temptations like pringles, other chips, other treats, but as a food addict (there I said it) I will work of avoidance for now. I'm white knuckling this process as it is. I am doing much better for pain, though I already feel stopped up. Walking today as well as the laxatives will help I hope. Carol Sue, I have to agree that the high cholesterol and high triglycerides get better on lower carb diets. That said, high fibre will also bring them down, so a balance must be struck. I am doing better than usual this time around, eating some carbs, (I often have toast for breakfast, with PB) and have stayed more regular as a result. I added in chromium picolinate to my morning meds and vitamins regime, that seems to reduce the carb cravings after that. Also having the fat in the PB seems to keep me from getting too hungry too soon. I find it works best when I am working, its not a good weekend breakfast, when I don't have work to occupy my mind, I get hungry sooner. I am sure its all in my head, but weekends I do better with eggs in my belly. PA, I hope you are going ok too, those blood sugar lows are very hard on us, we must take care. I am sure that threw your fasting numbers off. Physio today, a walk with the dog, and some well baby visits are on my plan today. Best wishes everyone, lets hope we have a good day to lead into a wonderful weekend, and leap day! |
Fatmad I am going more for low carb, high fiber and lower fat. I like the fact that the new WW plan seems to guide us into eating that way. I heard a healthy cooking chef on tv years ago who pretty much cooked that way. He said he like the 80% healthy eating with a 20% junk foods.
I know there will always be not so healthy foods that I am going to want so I allow for those within my points allowed. The amazing thing is that having that leeway seems to stop me from going overboard. For example. We usually go to Golden Corral once a week to eat. We used to go maybe once every month or two, but since DH likes their fish we go more often now. I've had to change some of my personal rule as to how I choose my foods now. I used to allow myself my favorite dessert because once ever month or two wasn't so bad, but I don't want to use all my weekly points for it every week. This week when we went they didn't have the fish ready and never did get the roast beef ready that I like. So I ended up eating loads of veggies. When they got the fresh cooked fish out, I ate a couple of pieces and realized that the veggies and fish had satisfied me. I did not want any dessert so I didn't have it. I know we will go again next week and I can have it if I want it. I really believe the fact that I can have it any time I want it has taken away the desire to have it. Another of one of those ways WW SP is helping me. Saying all that, I am in the process of tweaking my plan to eat more healthy foods. I have eaten a little more carbs than I should. I am trying to learn to eat more fiber friendly carbs than empty carbs. I believe I will start eating more fish and chicken. I find it interesting that 4 oz chicken breast is only 1 pt. Some fish is the same way. We've been watching the old Johnny Carson reruns. On one of them Doc has lost weight and Johnny asked him how he lost all that weight. Way back then he said... "I ate a lot of salad, vegetables and fish and chicken". Isn't that interesting. Hope everyone is doing well. Enjoy your weekend. |
Trish that is the mindset I'm working on. I know my weight problem started when I was young. My mom was always on a diet and we hardly had any treats in the house. When I hit puberty I gained weight. Because we didn't have cookies, chips etc around whenever I was around them I couldn't control myself and I overrate them till they were gone. When I moved out of the house I bought all the treats I wanted but I didn't have an off switch....I still don't. Now at 53 years old I have to remind myself over and over I can have more tomorrow. I struggle with it all the time.

Hi everyone. The last few days, since wednesday, I have been having longer work days, and have been too sore and tired to go for walks, but today, did it all. Did some home visiting for clients, walked with the dog and DD, went back to work. Am sore now, but coping. Time for some meds. Have been sticking to plan and may be able to move my ticker down, would like to wait a bit and make sure I don't sabotage myself before I go down though.
Also a nice NSV, my waist measurement is also down an inch, first time below 40 inches is so long I don't remember when! 39 it is. So exciting. I have been feeling the clothes loosen up a bit. Had decided that I will have a goal to lose another 10 pounds by the end of April, and if i succeed, can buy some new spring and summer clothes. I don't think I have done so well sticking to plan for so long before. Am pretty happy with myself right now. Its sunny here today, may you all be having a nice weekend |
I have been reading the ADA forum lately (didn't sign up, just reading.) Yesterday I read a long thread written by a man who developed a foot infection and eventually had his leg amputated below the knee. He posted daily from the hospital, and what he went through was terrible! He always had great blood sugar control, but once you get a foot injury, diabetes can really have a bad effect. It opened my eyes to what can really happen!
Trish and Mad, I'm glad to hear that WW is working so well for both of you. Trish, I agree that it's smart to allow a few points each day for some not-so-healthy foods so you can enjoy them and not feel guilty. Mad, I can understand your need to keep them out of the house as they are so very tempting to you. We are all different and have to adjust accordingly. p.a. I also grew up with no snacks in the house, but ours was because of lack of money for snacks. It worked out well for us though, because snacks became a very occasional treat. I also went hog wild with them after I had my own money to buy things, but that was short lived, and I went back to healthier eating eventually. That didn't help my weight though, because I always had a big appetite and overeating became the norm for me. Portion size is and will always be my problem. Hi Ruthie, Fickle, Watercolor, Rennie and anyone else I might have missed. Wish Bonnie would check in. I always wonder how she's doing. |
Whoa.... I am totally proud of myself. Went out with the hubby and friends last night (sigh, to see Deadpool, again, 4 times now.... love the movie, but NO MORE!!! Ready for Captain America or something, anything really!). We ate at Texas Roadhouse, I not only didn't even want that delicious bread and honey butter, but I got a steak, salad, and broccoli and was totally satisfied. On the way home, I had a really bad craving for a DQ mini reese cup blizzard, but held strong, and this morning I was down 1.8 lbs.
And I was too full from dinner to even have popcorn register. Doc still wants me to up the dose and considering the only side effect with the met is the tummy issues, I don't see any harm in it I suppose. I'm taking my next A1C test in about 3 weeks. I'm pretty sure this is cheating but.... My birthday is on the 27th and my appt with the Doc on the 31st so I'm getting blood work done on the 24th so my results won't be wonky with my birthday weekend. At this moment, not planning on going too far off plan, but I really really want a German Chocolate Cake at my party and plan on having a good sized piece or two. :D And my grandma always makes her delicious homemade chicken and dumplings. Yum. And the best thing, all that food stays at her house when I leave so no temptation the day after! Hope your move goes well Trish. :D That sounds exicting! I love house shopping. Grats Fatmad on the lost inches! I prefer those over the scale any day. p.a. - I grew up with a type 1 diabetic mother, so we just didn't have many sweets in the house either, save for her emergency coma preventing stash that was off limits. I think I was the only elementary school kid that liked diet coke LOL. My dad and I however have huge sweet tooths and we'd eat candy and sweets when mom wasn't around like it was the apocalypse. When I was on my own, I too bought all the sweets I could. I was already overweight, but hello obesity. I could wipe out a plate of rice crispy candy in one sitting. I think the foot/leg thing is my biggest fear with this diagnosis CarolSue I love being active and outside and it just terrifies me. Why are weekends so short??? My next vacay isn't until May. Ugh. Hello everyone else, hope you all had a great one. :D |
I absolutely agree. My goal is not to get off meds, its to have all my toes when I die at a ripe old age. For those around for a while, I have been watching a man I know. (husband to my former administrator, she who is dying now) as he has had multiple amputations of toes, parts of feet, and now has lost a foot, the other leg has a half a foot. His eyesight is terrible, and his kidneys are failing, but slowly. He will likely live a couple more years, but certainly not well.
If I have to live through such problems, I want to know that I did things right to prevent it. I don't want my grandchildren to only know me only as some sickly old lady. I want to have fun and play with them. So thanks for the reminder about how important it is to balance enjoyable living with healthy and healthful living. Has been crazy busy with work, but did get out on the trail yesterday and today, and ate reasonably. Went off call for 7 days this evening, and treated myself to an alcoholic cider and some triscuits with cheese. And did track the points. all well here friends. Have a good week. |
Evening everyone. I think it scares all of us,,,,losing a limb, eyesight etc... Something to really keep in mind. My dr keeps me very accountable with check ups every three months. Yes it's a pain and I complain but any concerns can be dealt with right away to. I had a Drs appt today in fact. She told me congratulations! On losing so much weight, and lowering my bg. Very happy and said she was excited for me. I've neverrrr had a dr tell me that. I left feeling very proud of my hard work. Took my off my gliclazide . When she asked me how I lost so much weight I told her I was counting carbs , she told me to keep up the good work!!!! I had been a little worried..lol.
Today is now treat day,,,lol. Then I know I'll cheat for a few days then back at it for next appt in May. I made the appt already to keep myself in check. Mad I want to keep up with my grandkids to.... Ficklehearts that's a great accomplishment! Carol what is the ADA forum? |
Hi everyone,
I knew I had diabetes for several years before I started seeing a doctor for treatment. There were two things that spurred me to start going. Firstly, I put off going because I didn't have insurance and didn't want the diagnosis on my record if I ever did get insurance again. Once preexisting conditions were legally not a reason for exclusion anymore, I started going to the community health center. But the second thing that reallyreallyreally got me going was that a member of my church had recently had part of her foot amputated. I already have some neuropathy and there was no way I wanted that to happen to me. I've come to notice that the tingling gets worse when I cheat and have something sugary. I'm so happy for all of you who are staying strong, dropping pounds and inches and getting your health in order! You inspire me and I love reading your posts! As for me, I'm finally having blood sugars below the 180 threshold so I'm happy about that. My little victory yesterday was that someone had brought in a big bowl of Easter chocolates and I didn't have any. I had to play a mind game with myself every time I passed the bowl, imagining that it was covered with something disgusting, but whatever works. Yay, me! The bowl is still there today though, so let's see if I can do the same. I ordered some stuff to motivate me to move and it should be here tomorrow. I've been trying to walk on my lunch breaks but this March-in-like-a-lion crap might strand me yet again today. Anne Who is so so so so ready for spring |
Anne, thinking of yourself thumping along with one foot should be enough to keep us away from the candy and sweets, but we seem to think it won't happen to us. Good job on passing up the candy and starting to exercise.
p.a. The ADA American Diabetic Association. Their forum is similar to this one, but they only discuss diabetes. They said they don't necessarily follow the plan of the ADA, but each follows what works for them. I read for information, but have never signed up. http://community.diabetes.org/ |
So I read that metformin can cause lactic acidosis if you drink alcohol with it. After reading that, I've abstained from it (the name alone sounds unpleasant). Is it something I should be concerned with? I only drink occasionally and have been really wanting a margarita.
My mom has horrid neuropathy in her feet these days; she works out daily hoping to keep blood flow, but I'm not sure how long that will prevent things. :( I've had several family members lose limbs. My uncle just passed away in January from heart complications due to type II. I admit, I lived in denial for years, but no more. Both sides of my family have diabetes (and type 1 skips a generation on mom's side, so I am terrified my kids will have it). I won the genetic lottery. I don't have much going on this week. My goals are sticking to my carb/calories and walking at least 5 days. So far, day one is done! I'm starting to feel better in the evenings too (not been sleeping well) and I think I'll dust off my kettlebells and get back to some strength training. |
Can you believe March is hear. I lost 3.4 lbs since I started WW on Feb 1. I looked back to Jan.1st and I've lost 4.4 lbs this year. Not fast but at least it is coming down. WW never is a fast weight loss.
My FBG needs to be better though. I will be working on that this month as well as getting the scale to move. Sure would like to lose some weight before I move back home. I was the lady who had a weight loss group in my church because I was losing weight back then. When married DH and moved to FL, I kept losing and looked great when I went back home for a visit for the first time. Why did I let this come back on me? I have been talking to a builder in TX to have a house built and will go there when we get things to the point where we will go sign contracts and pick out everything out for the house that we want. I sure hope I can lose some more weight or at least get my plan tweaked so that I can stay on plan while traveling. Staying OP while staying with my sister who is diabetic won't be a problem. (She and her husband checked out the houses etc where we are building and she said they are nice.) I would just love to be able to enjoy the trip and stay OP. Probably only have to stay out 1 or 2 nights on the road. My other sister lives half way between here and TX so we might decide to visit them on the way. If we do, we might stay with them and that is where staying OP might be iffy. Her DH is a terrific cook and well lets just say it might be a challenge. Although she and I always ate very healthy when we were together. Hopefully she still does. I haven't seen them in years. LOL Ficklehearts I don't know anything about lactic acidosis or how it works with taking Metformin and alcohol. I'll have to check into that, but then I don't drink often, but DH drinks red wine for his heart. So maybe I should know more. I have decided to hit March like a whirl wind and get through it with another nice loss at the end of the month. |
