Glad to hear you are not diabetic Fiona! jcatron how did you find out you were prediabetic? Did the doc say with weight loss it is reversible? I hope so!

jcatron243 10-18-2006 03:59 PM

AFter the Gestational Diabetes with my pregnanies my doctor told me that I have a 50 % higher chance of developing diabetes down the line. Now I check my blood glucose level once or twice a month and unfortunately my fasting level is very high. When I called to talk to my regular doctor he told me that although my fasting level is high (30-35 points above high end normal) I am in the pre-diabetic stage and I can reduce my risk of developing diabetes by losing 10-20% of my body weight, eating a proper diet and getting 20-30 minutes of exercise 3 times per week.

I am glad that you aren't diabetic Fiona, just be careful if you start to feel your blood sugar dropping, it is not fun.

What a great motivation to lose weight, Jeni! I hope you don't have any more trouble with it.

As this is the first TOM of my diet, next month I am going to change my diet to combat the problem. I have made a note in my diary that a few days before I am to up my fibre and protein, and maybe add a couple of spoons of real sugar to my porridge, rather than the substitute I use now. I guess it's all a learning curve. When I think about it, I am still kind of proud of myself that I didn't go too mad today - before I would probably have caved and eaten thousands of calories... today I just ate a chocolate bar that was 260 calories, and a sugary drink, so it's not the end of the world. I need to stop being hard on myself!!

jcatron243 10-18-2006 04:24 PM

My first TOM since eating healthy and exercising I ate everything in sight! I was hungry wanted chocolate and icecream, the last two haven't been nearly as bad.

I am a junk-food-aholic. I figure its like any other addiction it takes time, there will be setbacks, and I will always have to fight it. But with each setback I am learning how to control myself.

FionaMSC 10-18-2006 04:30 PM

I usually eat the two CH's like a thing possessed around my TOM - chocolate and cheese! I was debating giving them up altogether, then realised I probably wouldn't be a very nice person. I may lose lots of pounds if I did that, but I would also lose lots of friends!!

Jasmine31 10-18-2006 04:43 PM

I think that is why I wound up binging onthe 6th of this month cause tom was here. ugghhh! Reemember ladies that was the day I had a nacho bell grande, pizza for lunch and 2 chimichangas for dinner and was still hungry!

Anyhow I think I changed my mind. We did have lasagna last nite and even though everything is within my fats and cals etc I think i should do a chicken veggie rice day. I REALLY want to be down a pound tomorrow!

i was 222 yesterday and today, 223 monday, 223.50 sunday , 224 saturday , 224 friday, 224.50 thursady, etc so i am thinking if I have a really great day today maybe I can be down another .50-1 pound by tomorrow! :D

jcatron243 10-18-2006 04:44 PM

:) If you cant do it for life then incorporate it into your eating plan. I have by calorie cycling. I have two higher calorie days so If I want to eat a chicken sandwich I do on a higher calorie day, I just make sure I don't go over my calories for the day.

FionaMSC 10-18-2006 04:46 PM

Do you find weighing yourself every day helps you?

On diets before when I have been on and off the scales, I have been despondant if I am a pound more than I was the day before, but then it could go again by the next day, but I would end up getting despondant - so this time I am not going near scales until my weigh in on Sundays.

jcatron243 10-18-2006 04:50 PM

I try to stay off the scale, but I end up getting on it, then I get very very moody when I go up. I am going to start having DH hide it until Wed. mornings (my weigh in day). That way I stop focusing strictly on the scale and pay more attention to how I feel physically.

Jasmine31 10-18-2006 04:51 PM

Okay so i took the enchiladas out and added boneless chicken and brocoli, now it says 1439 cals for the day , 18% fat, 52% carbs, 30 % protein. Why am I feeling like that is too low for cals though? :( Maybe later if I get hungry I will have a serving of total!

In some ways yes, in some ways no.

Before when I would weigh in only once every few weeks it seems I would either lose 5 pounds or none at all. It was easy to not watch what I was eating or how much exercise. that is when I crashed and burned in August and only lost 1 pound by not watching! I think once I get down to 200 I might start just the once a week thing. Right now it is actually a good motivator cause if I am the same or more, I kick my butt and make sure to have a lower cal day!

jcatron I do the different cycles too. Especially sundays is my red meat day which is usually higher and then my eating out day. So I try to watch the weekly average. I am just scared of going to low and not losing any weight cause of my body thinking I am starving it! I think I will try to add in some total cereal later. We'll see. I do feel i am getting a bit obsessed with the scale but I think that is better than before where I didnt care at all and had no clue what it said. That got me up to 280 pounds!!

jcatron what I am doing with my food is something I can do for life. That is why it has taken me longer to lose cause I have ad to gradually changed bad eating habits and make new good ones. The chicken veggie rice is something I can do for the rest of my life with the few days of burritos, red meat and tacos in between. :D

FionaMSC 10-18-2006 05:07 PM

You are certainly doing very well Jasmine! I agree with the kick up the butt thing - I may check midweek next week, just to make sure I am on the right track, then if I'm not, I can pick up my game.

Jasmine31 10-18-2006 05:08 PM

:D Great idea! Okay how many calories do you average a day?

SarahMahfoud 10-18-2006 05:22 PM

LOL. I asked dh to hide the scale. I looked all over the house for it and finally found it by the treadmill where it normally is. He was just playing by saying he hid it. I should ask him to hide it for real.

Okay so I am one of those people that weighs herself everyday before I get dressed to go workout. When I don't workout on the weekends sometimes I weigh in and sometimes I don't. I do not let it stress me out, but I find that it makes me accountable for my actions. I know that if I fall off the wagon the scale may go up a pound, so I am prepared to see it on the scale. But then that makes me want to get rid of it that much faster. I also think how much I have accomplished to see that number 164 instead of 198 I did two years ago.
