it's nearing 2pm and I've eaten once today. I gorged.
5 eggs cooked sunny side up in 2 T butter cup coffee with cream I'm going to try and space it out more evening during the day. |

Just stopping by to say hi. Today is a fast day for me as Wednesday was supposed to be. I grow tomatoes for market and they finished their season. I ended up cleaning out the rows and composting a ton of material accidentally eating the last of cherry tomatoes as I worked. :)
I didn't even realize I was eating until I had popped a dozen of the sweet little boogers. That just prompted me to fry up five pieces of bacon with some lettuce mayo and more maters to eat them properly. I couldn't fast yesterday because mom knew it was my eating day and mom wanted to cook primal for me. This was a first. How's that for converting a doubter? How cool is that for an 83 year old diabetic!? She planned this meal in advance so I had to eat yesterday too. It was very good, prime rib roast, a medley of six veggies, and a simple salad. So for the past two days, I have had one meal a day. I suspect that will be my typical pattern in the future after I reach my goal. It really seems to work great for me. I have no idea if I can keep up the 25 pound a month pace this month, and I "feel" plateaued again, but I already decided not to be disappointed by any number. I knew it would get harder and perhaps not be realistic. Eh, we'll see. Two weeks to go before I weigh. Stay strong everyone! Lift some weights and lose some weight! |

And if you need anything else, just let me know :D . |
I can tell I am making some progress!! I took the bike out tonite & I have a pair of pants that I wear when I ride. The last time I wore them I just barley got them zipped, this time they zipped without a problem.
|
Three cheers for zipping things up!
I was so hungry when I got home from work tonight! I've had cheese, raspberries, strawberries, avocado, the crumbs out of a bag of beef jerky ... And speaking of protein powder ... I blended up coffee, coconut oil, cream and pp in my travel mug to take to work. It was fabulous! I need a bigger mug. |
tymaboy, that's awesome! :carrot:
ok so today's food coffee with cream (am going to change that to coconut oil for tomorrow) five eggs sunny side up in butter big salad with spring greens, romaine, red cabbage, carrots, red bell pepper, fennel, purple onion, egg, bacon and caesar yogurt dressing. small portion of butter chicken (which i think was dredged in flour. i got it from wegman's. i'll never get it again just in case) not much and im hungry. i was at the drive-in and couldnt get any food they offer there, so i waited until we got home and now i cant decide what i want! im a bit shaky though, so i definitely need something. |
quick ketosis question for you.....can you tell if you are in ketosis if you have acid/ph paper? I found some in my drawer and it has a range of 5.0 to 9.0 or something like that. Is ketosis in that range or is that a stupid question? I don't want to buy ketosticks right now and thought I could make do.
|
Hi all -- violet - sorry, I can't answer the sticks question, but I bet someone can.
Susan - you and a couple others have mentioned being really hungry lately -- me too! I even had horrible carb craving this week which I attribute to the stress and trauma of dealing with my dying cat and her subsequent death. But even yesterday, I felt this gnawing hunger, and today my tummy was rumbling upon waking up (we had a wonderful steak dinner last night with grilled squash, zuchini, onions, and eggplant and also sliced garden tomatoes on side). We are heading to the farmer's market now with our big cooler -- I'm hunting berries, grass fed meat, farm eggs, and organic dairy (the hardest thing for me to find for some reason). We have a large vegetable garden, but I'll be happy if I can find a few of those items. Weight is holding steady... need to focus on making it drop. But I feel I am easily not gaining, which was not heard of before I went primal. I had to battle daily just NOT to gain, and losing was so much work and deprivation! Have a primal day! |
Quote:
I don't know how much anyone knows about this stuff. I hope you don't think I'm treating you like you don't know anything! |
I don't know anything about it. No worries.
I just had the acid/ph papers and thought maybe I could use them. I think I'll forgo the ketosis analyzing and just concentrate on how I feel and eating as healthy as possible. Thanks for your imput though Kathy! |
Hi Kathy, just eyeballing I think you're just over a 1000 calories with what you listed. 5 eggs, bacon, chicken and a bunch of veggies. Fats and protein look fine. Carbs are real low. I think some fruit, preferably berries, but even more substantial if helpful, would have made that a great primal dieting day. So what did you do for the shakes?
Good job supporting local farmers Claire. widlviolets, ketosis will drop your body's Ph, but I wouldn't know how to confirm it with Ph strips. Btw, that just emphasizes the importance of alkaline veggies on a very low carb program to keep Ph normal. Ketoacidosis is dangerous and dieting diabetics need to monitor ketosis closely. I think this issue is probably why conventional wisdom tells diabetics to eat a couple slices of bread and a few servings of fruit daily. Bad idea for someone who wants to reverse diabetes, but whatever. I taste ketosis in the back of my mouth. I can also smell it in my urine when I don't exercise. If you exercise enough you will burn your ketones and not only not be able to taste it or smell it, but they will not appear on the ketostix. So even having the right test paper won't always be accurate. I'm 38 hours into a fast. I walked 10 miles yesterday. It was between 95 and 105 while I walked. I wore soaking wet clothes. hehe My brother is a coffee snob from his years in Hawaii. I am drinking great coffee every day since he's been here. This morning we were both groggily watching the pot fill with mugs in hand and he called me.... "TINY" hah! I'm definitely swimming in this shirt, which once was one of the only ones that fit me decently. Mom is right about something though. My shoulders and chest, butt and thighs are shrinking much faster than my belly. Subcutaneous fat is melting and visceral fat, which is far more unhealthy, is stubborn. I'm in a phase where I probably look worse with my shirt off. Two sisters in town from LA. Possibly barbequing for a crowd today. My stomach gurgled a little with the coffee, but I am not feeling hungry... again. |

Considering Primal
I'm currently doing another program that isn't working as well for me as I'd like. Some friends have done/are doing it but the packaged food bit doesn't seem to be for me. I've got about 60 pounds I'd like to burn off.
I've read all this month's posts and am impressed with your results and the community you've built. You refer to some books and websites, I've figured out some of them but not all: PB = Primal Blueprint MDA = marksdailyapple [dot] com GCBC = ??? Thanks in advance! edit: found GCBC through looking up PB on amazon ... GCBC = Good Calories Bad Calories by Gary Taubes. |
hi notanothernm,
I think you make a wise choice if you're breaking away from a prepackaged food plan. All due respect to Jenny and the rest of them, but there is just something unsustainable about having someone else prepare your food for you. This is about eating healthy whole foods, eliminating unhealthy refined foods; changing your lifestyle, not your diet. It can be a real challenge to swear off processed sugar, refined oils and grains, but for someone like me, prediabetic, it seems the smartest thing to do. I eat so good it's embarrassing sometimes. Today I had a pound of top sirloin cooked up carne asada style with a whole avocado. Dessert was homemade yogurt with toasted walnuts topped with organic strawberries reduced in coconut milk to make a sweet syrup. I didn't eat this good getting fat. Cereal, sandwiches, pasta-- it all seems like a waste of time spent eating now. :) |

I am not all that interested in fruit anymore. Maybe it's just a phase? I found a really good yummy dessert though! Frozen mango pieces and a can of coconut milk. Whipped up in a frothy cold yummy treat. No extra sugar or anything needed. I'll eat more of that. I am quitting dairy. I post over at mothering and the primal ladies there said my lack of weight loss could be allergy related. Even though used to I sort of poopoo all that stuff, since quitting wheat and finding that it was directly related to my horrible life impeding GERD, I am willing to give up foods to see if it helps with anything. So today is my first full day without dairy. Yesterday, I had caesear dressing and a bit of cream in coffee so it's almost two days. A day without cheese is a strange day indeed, for me. four eggs cooked in butter coffee with coconut oil (weird! but ok) cashews and dried apricots (about ten apricots and half cup of cashews) 2 chicken breasts cooked in bacon fat 1/3 c cashews |
Oh my Heavens! You should have seen my grand-daughter's birthday cake! Bit a cake with yer icing? Super sweet. I had two burger patties and fruit as well. Not good but not horribly bad either.
She and I went for a little walk (bare foot) to see a neighbours garden. Part exercise and part play ;) I struggle with cheese. It's just so convenient! I definitely have gastro symptoms if I eat too much dairy. |
Did TERRIBLE yesterday. Went to a graduation party and it was so freaking hot and sticky and I ate LOTS of sweets. (Sweets are my downfall).
But then I came home and went swimming with DH and DS and had a good time. Having people over for dinner today. Should be lots of swimming and hopefully good eating......maybe a little drinking. We are having a pulled pork from MDA, my MIL's beans (green beans sauteed with bacon and grating cheese) and potato salad. The only bad thing we are having is potato salad and no sweets. So if I steer clear of that I should do good. Have a good Sunday! |

I definitely need to move to food as we humans were intended to consume it. My mind and body are just better when capital-F food is in my tummy. What you ate today sounds GREAT! I've been off refined carbs --sugar, alcohol, grain flours and whole grains -- for almost a month and do feel better for it. It's inspiring that you don't hear or respond to the siren song of cereal, pasta and breads. I'm impressed and encouraged. I'll probably phase off current program in the next 7-10 days: returning or exchanging what food I can, using/selling/giving away the food I can't return or exchange, and restoring my diet to food only one or two steps from its original state. ------ Call me Nan ... not another nickname :) |
I messed up yesterday & am paying for it this morning. I think I started off good (could be wrong) I had my coffee w/cream & Splenda. I was so busy yesterday that I did not get a chance to eat anything till around 3 which was when I was cutting up a cantalope & a new melon that I had never seen in our grocery store before. Its a brite yellow sugar (?) honey dew melon. It is very sweet & taste like sure was added to it so I am sure it is not considered primal. I didnt eat too much of the fruits while cutting it up before we had to run out again. When we got home my neighbor wanted us to go over for dinner so we headed over. They made steak kabobs. She made a new kind of salad, an Asian type with asparagus, snap peas, cabbage, cashews & some other stuff & made a peanut sauce that was not too spicey. She also made a potato salad. I ate the Asian salad & DS only eats the potatoes in the potato salad so I ate the onions & celery (in the Helmans mayonnaise mixture) Later DH & I hoped in the hot tub & I drank 2 glasses of my neighbors homemade grape wine (which she always adds some other alcohol to it) Those 2 glasses was too much I had to eat something to help soak up some of the alcohal but eating a salad does not do the trick so after I ate that I grabed a couple bites of a blue berry muffin, that helped. This morning my blood levels are off, 1st time in a few months that they have been messed up. I will be staying away from her wine for a while. I did not think anything of it when I drank it last nite cuz DH & I make our own wine & it does not effect me like hers did.
I noticed yesterday that my family has been eating differently as well. They still eat carbs & junk food but not like they had been. Since I have started DS has decided to cut back on what he eats & to cut out the junk food. He does not like veggies but will eat certain ones. Some of his chooses are not the greatest cuz there are time when he will go to Sub Way or McDonalds for lunch or dinner. DH has cut back on the amount of his junk food but we did just buy ice cream at the grocery store yesterday. I talked to him last nite about running with DS & I. He's not sure that he wants to try it. |
Good Sunday everyone. I messed up a little too, but I'm more frustrated than anything. We had company, confusion, messed up plans. Some went out to dinner, some just didn't eat. That was me. I went for my 6 mile walk late at night. Got home and decided to eat because I'm planning on fasting all day today. I cooked up a big three ingredient omelet. Eggs, bacon, cheddar. I cooked six pieces of thick bacon and ate all of them. :)
I woke with the same headache I used to get eating lots of sugar. I can't believe the small amount of sugar in cured bacon would do this, but it did. I need to just part ways with all sugar. They used to call it sugar diabetes. A crowd of friends and family headed out for the lake this morning, I was planning to go but I just stayed here with my headache that just didn't want to face the road and bright morning light. Tested my blood sugar-- 114. Highest in a month. From bacon. Ugh. Guess I have to step up and get the more expensive/primal uncured stuff. Tyma, with no persuading at all, I am noticing a dietary shift in those around me too. I love it. Dd is off of bread with the exception of getting an occasional Subway with her friends -- less than once a week. My mom has started taking primal ideas to heart, given up bread, but still needs her biscotti with morning coffee. Nan, the siren call was loud and clear for a month. The first two weeks were much like quitting cigarettes. I fed the withdrawal symptoms with nuts. I cannot say when the cravings turned to distaste exactly, but it happened sometime this month. So I went from feeling tortured cold turkey for a month, to just missing them occasionally for a month, to finally losing interest in the grains. |
Good morning!
Welcome Nan! I went for a walk during my lunch yesterday. I'm not sure what felt better ... just getting out of the building for a half hour or the praise I got from a visitor who saw me. Absolutely primal food yesterday, with the addition of a protein shake and a glass of wine at bedtime. |
Good morning guys and gals  and :welcome: Nan :D ...
Nan, glad you're getting rid of that processed stuff :barf: ... It's really so nasty... I was not very Primal on Saturday AND Sunday :faint: and this morning the scale rewarded me with 4.5 lbs of bloat... :frypan: :kickbutt: back to the ole grind today again ... Some running this afternoon and weight training tonight... if the weather clears maybe I can convince DD to do some rollerblading too... Sort of a triathlon sort of day  I am on vacation as of today :carrot: we were supposed to go zip lining this morning but it was pouring rain, we will go tomorrow, the weather is showing some sun :sunny: |
I felt guilty yesterday day cuz DH made (homemade) pizza for lunch & invited the neighbors overs. When I cut the pizza I made sure to cut them with smaller slices. I ate 3 slices (3 different pizzas) I also made sure to eat fruit. After eating the pizza & feeling guilty for eating it I made sure to eat good the rest of the day. I also went for a run to help make up for it. I was very proud of myself it was the 1st time I ran a whole mile. I ran it without stopping to walk. I did not warm up long enough cuz when we started I told DS that I could feel it in my groin area. After we got running a little farther I did not feel it & did not feel it stretching afterwards but I sure did a few hours later. The hot tub did wonders for it last nite. I hardly feel this morning but can still tell it is pulled.

I've been doing pretty well the last three days, and I created a new "count-down" line chart to track my daily loss until Aug 10 when I'm leaving for a wedding.
I've plugged in a daily weight for each day that -- if I can follow it -- will result in me being 199 by the time I leave. I know 7 pounds doesn't seem like much, but I've been sitting at this weight for almost 2 months so losing 7 pounds would be a dream for me, especially since it would put me in Onederland. I'm going to use this wedding (not mine!) as a little extra push to get to this landmark weight which I haven't been for 20 years (actually, I haven't been at my current weight, 206, for 20 years, so woot-woot for that.) |
Woot woot indeed!
I'm having trouble sleeping ... sigh ... so it's me and merlot at the computer. DH and I went for an hour long walk tonight. It was very nice. I should be sleepy. |
CJ I'm excited for you!
Hi Nan! Welcome to the thread:D Susan, I miss wine when I'm in the two week window. I am trying to get preggers and when it's a maybe, I abstain. If my cycle starts, well, no baby, but there is always wine! Ilene it was raining here for us, too. What are your vacation plans? tymaboy, I love that you're getting out there and running. I want to do that. Shin splints plagued me, but I hope at a lower weight I can join you and Ilene in your running efforts. BibBob, hi! So your bad day is walking six miles and eating some bacon? I think I;m doing this all wrong! I eat bacon lots. I don't get headaches from it though. I hear that the nitrites can do it. So it could be either, yeah? There is so little sugar in cured bacon. (and even if it's "nitrite free", it still has nitrites because they use celery powder which converts naturally from nitrates to nitrites). Bacon :D Today for me was a big eating day breakfast - skipped. wasn;t hungry. snack - 2 slices of cheese and 8 slices bacon (bad bad bad) late lunch - big hamburger patty with slice of cheese dipped in mustard, most of a dill pickle, stoneyfield yogurt with mango and honey (new flavor and the first time i picked something ahead of time that had some sugar in it. it had 26 grams of carbs in it) dinner romaine lettuce with little of shredded carrots and red cabbage, sliced red bell pepper, purple onion, feta cheese, kalamata olives, fresh squeezed lemon juice and EVOO with salt and pepper after dinner snack 2 handsful of raw cashews 5 prunes so at least 2300 calories with good percentages. i;m right before my cycle begins and this is the week i eat. i need to keep it under 2000, though. Kathy give up dairy? lololol!! |
Sounds delicious Kathy. Did you have any draggy moments? Was your energy good all day?

I was feeling better today so DS & I went out for another ran. I am waiting to measure myself till the end of the month. I am so hoping that I see a change.
I have been buying fresh fruit to munch on threw out the day. I found that as long as I have that I I grab a bite here & there during the morning & do not make breakfast. With the daycare it is hard to eat breakfast some mornings. Sometimes I am hungry sometimes not. On the days I'm not I dont worry about eating till lunch or I grab some fruit till it is lunch time. I am assuming that this is ok to do or am I hurting myself by doing this? |

My husband went on a ten day intensive meditation retreat and he came back a different person. Better. Happier. And was able to keep up an hour a day for a while. |
Good morning!
I'm already cooking bacon. I was draggin' yesterday so I'm going to try "front end loading" LOL! |
Ilene and Kathy: Oh the yoga and meditation retreats sound very cool!
Tymaboy: I'm so happy about your running....and jealous too (but in a good way). It seems like people lose a lot of weight when they run. I just think it looks so free-ing for some reason. Maybe some day I'll start running again. Kathy: Last year I gave up coffee, sweetners, caffeine, dairy and some wheat. Now I eat them all except the wheat. I do love my dairy....esp cheese. I probably should cut it out too. It seems everything tastes better with cheese??? ;) Do you guys have a problem with eating and stress? I'm sure most people do but I seem to always be a little stressed and the only way I feel better is if I eat. Part of the problem is that I am toooo sensitive about things and worry about every little thing. I get on my own nerves. ;) Oh well it's a new day. Have a good one everyone. |
Quote:
I know I get the major case of the munchies when I am really bored. When I'm stressed it always different sometimes I want to eat but sometimes I dont. There have been different times in my life that I have gained when I was stressing & other times I lost. |
I'm fortunate to live a mostly stress free life. It is the reason I live down the street from ****. It's 111 degrees at 11pm today. But this is the cheapest cost of living I have enjoyed in 20+ years and that allows me a lot of freedom from stressful things. That said, there are a few things that still seriously stress me, and no doubt, I immediately think of food as a sedative. Food is a sedative after all. I use two tactics to beat back stress without eating. I walk or swim (depending on the weather) -- exercise instead of eat. Or, I drop whatever I am doing and read something difficult on the topic of health and weight loss. Good Calories Bad Calories really pushed my brain. But, while doing so, I found a great love of the material and an escapism that was both educational and stress relieving. I'll read slow and use google to understand the fancy stuff if necessary. I am now exchanging emails with Mark Sisson about breaking news in epigenetics. Go figure. The point is, the reading is reprogramming my genes in the same sense the diet is. Cortisol (stress hormone) used to be hardwired to chocolate; now it craves exercise mental or physical. Instead of a pulp fiction novel that I once read to relax, I am now boning up on how ghrelin signaling can be entrained to reduce appetite. Not only does it reduce stress, it motivates me to continue losing weight. Hugging my daughter helps too.:)
I don't know if writing all this is helpful here, but now you see why I blog. I am launching my diet blog very soon as the authorship of my business blog officially changed hands this weekend. You will be the first to know when it goes online. It will follow the same pattern as my other blogs and serve as a "news source on topic", but just know it's real purpose is to educate my loved ones. They will read what I write on their own time much sooner than they will listen to me on my time. We are a sadly obese family, and I do mean sad. That's an awful thing to realize. I hope and pray they all get with the program. ****, any program that works. Kathy, as for blowing it with bacon, it was getting my fasted blood sugar over a 110 again that bothered me. I am more concerned with diabetes than primal food. Bacon is awesome. I will just go sugar free with the next batch and enjoy experimenting. My last fast went 36 hours and was broken with some a small amount of lunch meat and nuts, before a big t-bone 40 hours in. Cheese and salami was my late night snack. Fasting again today. |
THank you both for your thoughts on stress. I really need to focus on what I want out of life (to be healthy for my son) so when i get stressed, I can channel that nervous worrying energy in a positive way, ie exercise.
Usually I just want the easy way out which is food and sometimes shopping for me. Something that will make me feel good right now, ya know? Tymaboy, I think I will start jogging again in the fall. I have to take it slow because i'm so afraid of tearing my calf muscle again. I've never been one for warming up and stretching. I think I'm goign to have to starting doing it the right way from now on. BibBob, this may sound strange because I don't know you at all, but you seem like such an interesting person. I can't wait to read your diet blog. Off to cook dinner...... |
Kathy -- Coconut Milk sounds like a great thing to bring, does it have to be refrigerated? I can't remember, we have no fridge in our small bedroom... I just can't get used to Beef Jerky though, I don't like it at all... My SIL is a Yoga instructor now and when she came back from her 6 week course she was changed, in a good way, too... I always feel sooooo relaxed when I come back from there...We do a lot of meditation, hopefully it'll be nice because we do the Yoga classes outside in the mountain air, it's wonderful!
Wildviolet -- :lol3: @ "I get on my own nerves." that comment struck me as so funny... Yoga helps a lot with lowering your stress levels... or plain ole exercise and working out a good sweat is good too...definitely try running/jogging it is a great stress reliever... Do it slowly, running one minute and walking one minute and increasing the run slowly over time... Bob -- Can't wait to read your blog... DH DD and I went zip lining today... OMG what fun that was, at first I thought what did I get myself into here, but as time wore on and confidence increased it was a magnificent experience, talk about working your core :faint: .... Here are a couple of pics: http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...n/IMG_0258.jpg http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...n/IMG_0273.jpg http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...n/IMG_0286.jpg http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...n/IMG_0322.jpg |
I'm a little scared of heights and suspect ziplining would do awful things for my heart rate and cortisol production! Awesome pics Ilene. Looks great fun for someone who doesn't so easily go breathless with heights.
I stopped back by to report maybe the best news in awhile in my little sphere. I meant to share this before writing my long post above. My 5-3 300+ pound sis called me this morning to tell me how good I look with the weight loss and share her efforts. She is trying to exercise the pounds away. What she really wanted was to hear more about why what I am doing is working so apparently easy for me. We talked for about an hour and I think I have a convert. Her whole problem with low carb has been that it makes her weak, dizzy and even sick. I told her about many of the carb flu experiences I've read about and told her about what I went through. I think/pray/hope that she is a convert. No one needs it more than her. |
