Too far behind to catch up with everything. Just don't sweat the birthday cake. That's the good part of having 20% to play with. Cool pond. I want to sit in it with a net and catch fish for dinner. hehe Nuts are nuts. Finally conquering them seems to have me melting off more pounds. By conquering, I mean a handful every other day seems to be fine now.
Unfortunately my idea of making up workouts lately has been cleaning the pool, digging up irrigation and modifying some landscape features around here preparing for a major veggie grow out next spring. I think I finally got this desert figured out for farming. If not, there's always cactus and agave -- ooh homemade tequila. I have a ton of thoughts on alternate day fasting after getting into the groove. No doubt ghrelin signaling (the stuff that tells you you're hungry) is totally muted. I am 36 hours into a fast and no hint of hunger pains. Decent energy, not great, but I dug ditches in 100 degree weather and hiked 6 miles late last night. I AM probably catabolizing muscle, but that is okay. I will not need as much to haul around a smaller me. If I burn up 20-30 pounds of muscle to lose 170 pounds of weight, the trade off seems reasonable and healthy as far as I can tell. I can try to rebuild later. Building muscle while burning fat is a complicated balance that seems part of the reason so many people yo yo. Building muscle makes you hungry. It makes weight loss more difficult for me. Lyle McDonald prefers focusing on one at a time (alternate weeks). I think I'll try that in September. I'm rambling. Excited for the weigh in on the first. Excited to discover how easy alternate day fasting can be. It's tucked away in the weight loss tool shed with juice fasting when time comes for maintenance. I can tell by the roll on my stomach that I am very near my old plateau where I spent years languishing in depression. I'm going to find the cliff at the end of this plateau and dive off. :) |
Oh yeah. Good morning everyone!
I'm having some negative feelings about MDA, not Primal Blueprint. There is a bit of nonsense coming from the forums that for me is cultic. No dairy, no nightshades, no nuts, no sweet fruit, no alcohol, tons of supplements, only grass fed and organic. If I continue to post regularly there, I will end up getting in lame debates. Wait for doctor Cordain to go after goitrogens in cucurbits or all the toxins in avocados. No more broccoli, kale, spinach, cauliflower and cabbage? When Mark went after eggs and nightshades for lectins, I was really disappointed. There has to be a better balance. Still rambling... sorry. |
G'day!
I can't see the pond pics!:tantrum: must be the filters here at work... Yesterday I stayed primal but felt so lousy I didn't do any kind of exercise. Feeling better today and on track so far. I did decide I want to give the SimpleFit.org workout a try. It consists of all of three moves. One of them is a chin up and I'll have to work up to that I love simple. I find that mostly I fail at eating plans when they get too complex--I just lose it when I start having to concern myself with finding the mango relish for the Arctic-caught wild squid... It seems my life is complex enough in other areas! So--everybody hang in there! Spanky |

Yeah, that made me laugh thanks.
I ate like a pig yesterday. This alternate day idea sort of backfired. :D Anyway, yesterday was an eating day and I felt an empty sort of hollow feeling in my stomach. Not sick, just something. I had a four egg omelet with about a half pound of spicy beef and a half cup of guac for breakfast. I had almost a pound of slow roasted rump roast for lunch. I had a spicy Italian sausage stew (cabbage, onions, sweet peppers, carrots, garlic, in a fat rich buttery broth) for dinner. I had another half pound of the spicy beef with sour cream rolled up in romaine as a salad. I had a banana smashed into coconut cream with cocoa and almonds like a crunchy pudding for dessert. I had 14 ounces of raw milk with my supplements before bed. What. |
I borrowed the Primal Blueprint cookbook from the library. I was pleasantly surprised. Often I find with cookbooks, especially low-carb cookbooks, that most of what looks good, I don't need a recipe for.
The book didn't really get off to a good start in that regard, in that the first recipe was directions to grill a steak, and the second and third were recipes for pot roast (Primal Pot Roast, and Slow Cooker Italian Pot Roast). The book has a good mix of traditional and unusual recipes, and while some are very simple, others are complex enough to warrant buying the book (for me - if I find more than six recipes I'm interested in, I start considering buying the book). Usually, even when I'm interested in a cookbook I'll wait a few months after the publication date, because I can usually buy them used for half price or less on amazon. Wait a year, and you can often get them for $1 or less (with $4 shipping). I was happy enough with this cookbook to put it at the top of my to buy book list (which is about a hundred books long). |

Funny CJ!
Good menu Bob, like Ilene said, it was Primal. Your body must have needed it if you kept eating, I try to listen to my body as long as its wanting primal goodness. Things are busy around my house, my son had open house this morning and I'm finally trying to catch up on cleaning slong with moving furniture and we have a new mattress, everything seems out of sorts right now. DS starts school Monday so I'll have a little more time for the gym and organizing, I can't stand clutter and right now the house feels all cluttered, so I'm looking forward to next week. I'm with you guys on some of the folks on MDA forum, they are venturing towards the disorder that Mark posted an article on a while back. Stay cool everyone! |
A fun little anecdote. I can only walk at night because of the oppressive heat here. It's generally 90-95 when I walk by the bank around 10pm. My daughter cannot sleep when I am walking despite her grandma and uncle being here. She fears me being in the desert for half the walk and getting snake bit or something, but she cannot sleep. She's also paranoid about me walking past the cemetary at night. Campfire ghost stories have been part of her summer.
Yesterday, I convinced her to walk with me, half a walk, 3 miles instead of 6. She agreed. The first half is the creepy half. Our neighborhood dumps into a dessert trail that emerges on County Line Road at a salvage yard. Then there's some strange buildings and creepy boneyards before the dog pound (which is strangely silent or not at night), the cemetary, a oddly lit church in the middle of nowhere, a house whose power lines are covered with ravens who've colonized the property, a known deserted old west adobe house that has "stories" associated with it, a building supply yard... then the desert home. Well as we're 3/4ths of the way past the cemetary, she sees a bicycle on its side, back wheel clicking and spinning. It scares her. I just figure someone is visiting a deceased loved one. Nope. It's my brother and he pops out from the trees and scares the beejeepers out of her. She wants to do it again tonight. :) Fasted about 36 hours and broke it with coffee and coconut milk. Grilling bacon wrapped tenderloins for the household and three others tonight. Feeling a little beat up from too much ditch digging. Looking forward to weighing in on Sunday. Fishing on Saturday so this will probably be my last post until I weigh. Have a primal weekend everyone. |
Great story Bob, you must be a writer I could visualise all the details of your walk with your DD, very cool...
I didn't have a primal day this afternoon I had 4 small squares of some type of granola thingies I bought for the kids at Costco last week, 30g of carbs per square... and tonight I just had to have fresh corn on the cob, it was the best so far this year... I could not resist they were so sweet and yummy with butter of course, no more margarine for this gal... But I had about 160g of carbs :( ... Tomorrow will be a better day, I promise  |
I'm with you Ilene.....I had almost a whole pint of Ben & Jerry's last night and tonight for dinner I had a vodka on the rocks and half a pint of ice cream. My husband's family is just driving me crazy. I need to learn to detach .....so hard for me.
Tomorrow is a new day.......I finally bought the PB book and will sit and read and get inspired. On a good note, my 5yo learned to ride a bike and we live on a bike trail so almost everyday we go for a bike ride. We went 4.5 miles yesterday which is pretty good for the little guy. More importantly it is the highlight of my day. He goes slow but he hums the whole time and makes up litttle stories as we go. He is truly the best thing that ever happened to me!!! (I'm writing this under the influence of the vodka...hehe) Bob I'm still excited for your weighins!!!! I'm living vicariously through you! Lastly I grew a bunch of hot peppers this summer and was wondering if anyone every dried hot peppers? I was thinking of making some flakes for the winter as DH and I love hot food. Anyone ever do that???? |
Oh this is so funny! It must have been one of those days cuz I did good up till noon when my daycare baby went home. I ran to the store to but some alcohol. I had 4 Malibu Rum Coconut w/ OJ. After that I talked DH into going out to eat. We went to a buffet. I stuck pretty good to decent stuff except for the rice, pasta & pie. But I only took a very small amount of each & did not eat all the pie. Even tho I am stuffed at the moment I am still very toasted, usualy after I eat I am fine but not this time. I think I need to go to bed early tonite.

I'm in a weird reflective place this morning. The oddness of things is astounding me.
My stomach is growling. That's a new thing for me. Just simply did not happen until I'd been primal for several weeks. If my toenails grow any faster I'm going to have to buy bigger shoes. People keep raving about how slim I am but I'm heavier than I was before Christmas. About a third of my wardrobe is size 2. Who the heck wears a size 2 at 130 lbs??? I'm restless which is pretty odd for someone as habitually sedentary as I am (was). I feel like I could run if I wanted to. I'm just about vibrating. But there is nothing that I want to do. Just weird! Must go move now. |
Susan- maybe your weight is muscle. Muscle does weigh more then fat does so it may not be a bad thing. That would be my guess if you are in a size 2. I think some people get so caught up in what they weigh & dont take into consideration how much muscle they have. I know back in 08 I weighed more then I do now & my measurements are pretty close to the same as now but I did alot more strength training at that time. I had more muscle then I do at this point in time. I was pretty proud of myself at the time cuz I had the little muscle bumps in my arms. Now they are just flab.
I couldnt wait to see if I lost inches this month so I measured myself this morning instead of waiting till tomorow. I lost 1 inch off my abdominals, 1.5 off both my waist & hips. I am also down 3 lbs from the beginning of the month. 3 lbs is not much but I am OK with that since I see that I lost some inches as well. That atleast shows me that I am making some progress. |
Or that weird busy feeling might have been a migraine aura ... grrr ....
|
Only you my Primal friends would understand that I just ate, enjoyed and savoured, a whole pound of bacon :faint: .... I have never ever EVER done that ... along with, a fresh from my neighbour's garden, cucumber :hun: yummy!!!
Migraines suck Susan  |
Susan, I have had something like that ......I would be in a great mood and lots of energy and then later, I'd have the aura and a migraine. It would really bum me out because I was in such a good, energetic mood. It doesn't happen often though.
Ilene I like your new pic and thumbs up on the bacon! Yum! Tymaboy congrats on the inches and poundage. I doubt I lost anything especially with my ice cream binges the past two days, but weirder things have happened. |
Hmmm,
It has been an Odd week for me. Two days ago I had a day long anxiety attack of some sort. In the middle of it I was at the Dr.'s office and my blood pressure was higher than I've ever had it....there's been really nothing to have triggered it. We've had a lot of adverse stuff lately so maybe I was getting it all in at once...there's really no time to have a proper breakdown when you have a toddler (!) The next day I felt like the walking dead and ate weird. Today I feel almost normal and am back to eating primal. Needless to say I haven't tried my simplefit workout yet. Bob--that's one heck of a picturesque walk, I'd love it. Before my son came I used to walk my dogs at night just because I liked to be out at that time. Susan--How long have you been eating Primal? I've never had a migraine, but I know I have a cyclical "Busy Time" that corresponds to hormone ebb and flow. Sometimes I get a whole week of no sleep and able to get tons of stuff done without fatigue. It makes up for the "trough week" that follows! Tyma--I don't dare check the inches yet. I want to spend a decent while with exercising better before I disappoint myself. GRATZ to you! Ilene--Bacon is just the best! So--burgers on the grill tonight. I might try a spaghetti squash pasta night tomorrow. Weighing in on Monday.... Happy Friday! spanky |
I remember having a migraine when I was eleven. They've been pretty rare since I've have menopausal symptoms. Primal? Since February, I think, maybe the first part of March.
My son has a theory that I'm having "let down" headaches on my day off. I get wired up and ready to roll for work and then when I have a day off ... I crash. I can remember doing that once when the kids were sick. I ran to emerg and stayed up with them and when everybody was better ... I got a headache. Absolutely no triggers this time. No hypoglycemic episode, no peppers, no wierd beers <shrug> |
I get migraines every so often. Not as much as they used to be. I end up in the ER about 1 time a yr for them now. I do everything I know of to try to get rid of them before going there. I have a Dr. apt in Aug. I am going to talk to her about my head aches. I have been to 2 neurologist & was not impressed with neither one. I have even been to physical therapy for them since I told the one that I think it is due to my neck & shoulders. Why do Dr.s always have to push the pills instead of finding the route cause of it?
I was pretty surprised this morning that my blood levels were not off this morning. Usualy when I had too much to drink (plus I ate some stuff I shouldnt have) my levels are normally off & it takes me a day to get them back to normal. I think me getting a drink of water everytime I got up to go to the bathroom helped flush away alot of the extra sugar that does it. I noticed that I dont have a problem with my levels like I did before I started (or try ) to eat Primal. I am curious to see what my weight difference is at the Dr. compared to June of 09. My neighbor likes to cook. She cooks pretty much all the time. She has gotten to the point that she cooks enough to invite my family over about 3 times a week. She has been doing pretty good at trying to make things that is on my diet. She invited us over again today but she did warn me that she tried something new & its not diet friendly. Then proceeded to say that she took out 3 racks of ribs for dinner tomorrow as well. Her ribs are awesome. She slow cooks them in the oven all day so they fall off the bone. |
Tyma : you have my kind of neighbour :hun:
Migraines: I haven't had one since I quit the pill 25 years ago...I get regular headaches and I don't get them too often either.... Tonight DD and I made a Taco meatza...OMG it was good... I put Taco seasoning in the ground beef along with an egg... I then mixed pizza sauce with salsa and add that to the meat crust I mixed refried beans ( I know not Primal  DD wanted it) and cream cheese then spread some shredded lettuce and taco/nacho cheese mixture on top of the lettuce... I know warmed lettuce sounds odd but it's really quite good and everyone loved it! |
I went to farmers market today. I bought 2 egg plants. My mom used to make egg plant parmigiana, it is so good. I dont know anything else to make with it - any ideas?
|
I'm half Lebanese and my mom used to make a sort of stew with eggplant. She would put chunks of beef, eggplant in a thick, chunky tomato sauce and serve it over rice.
Also you can make ratatouille (sp?) with zuchinni (sp? I'm not awake), peppers, eggplant and tomatoes. Very tasty side dish. Tyler Florence does a good one on Foodtv.com It's good in chinese food with chicken. And another Lebanese dish we made was stuffed eggplant (stuffed with ground beef and rice) cooked in a tomato sauce. I love eggplant, can you tell! My DH does not so I don't make it so much. It also good grilled with other veggies and it's good in pasta with chicken, tomatos and cheese. |

oooh that sounds good!
