Anyone have any thoughts or smart comments to throw back next week when I'm on vacation? I'll be in a condo with 4 other people all of whom eat CW healthy. My step-father and grandfather are sure to have something smart-a** to say every morning while I'm munching on my bacon and eggs, they both eat oatmeal with raisins or toast or bagels for breakfast. It will be hard to ignore them all week, so I'd like to nip it in the bud the first morning.
Any thoughts?????????? What would you say or do for a whole week. |
If you wanted to avoid the comments, IF through breakfast. The other two meals have more agreeable primal foods. If you took off for a morning stroll while they sat there eating, they would have to admire your efforts, right? Just an idea.
I have a strong "center of attention" personality. It helps me in these situations. I've armed myself with half dozen simple health and weight loss sermons, and I deliver them when prompted. 1. "I have all the symptoms of metabolic syndrome. Insulin spikes cause fat storage and carbohydrates spike my insulin. The really good news is this has me avoiding some extremely unhealthy foods made from refined sugars and grains. Say what you will, I have lost ## pounds eating this way and have great energy for exercise." 2. "I've been looking into obesity research carefully and not one controlled study suggests low fat high carb diets create a weight loss advantage. In fact the obesity epidemic can be tracked for 40 years with our country's increasingly low fat high carb dogma. Weird but true." 3. "I'm in ketosis to control my blood sugar. You're on the krebs cycle from all the grains you consume. You burn carbs converted to glucose for fuel, I burn fats because glucose is not healthy for me. I ate the way you eat for years and became obese. We're not all the same. I've done my research and have this figured out for myself finally." Leave a copy of GCBC or PB on the kitchen counter. 4. "Cows eat grains. Humans eat cows. It was like that for 300,000 years. Why do you eat like a cow? Do you know cancer, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes are all diseases of post agricultural revolution? In the medical texts they are referred to as diseases of civilization. What changed? Sugar and grains, that's what." You may want to post your question at MDA too. Those folks may have better, more sensitive, ideas. |
Thanks Bob! I'm definitely armed and ready, those will help and the book I'll be leaving on the kitchen table. I'm not one to back down so they will probably drop it the first day once I aim and shoot.

Hello everyone, I have been ready this thread and the last one and I have a couple of questions. My main big one is, how hard is it to stay under 100g of when eating primal without looking up everything up? I have only ever counted calories and I have no idea how many carbs are in any food. My next question is, is there an induction period. Should I start out eating less than 50g of carbs for a set amount of time? Thanks for your help, Daphne
|
Hi Daphne. Welcome to the tribe! :)
There is no induction. There's no set rules beyond eating good clean whole foods (a lot do not qualify though as you probably know). You have wide boundaries to function within, and it depends on your situation and goals. If you eliminate all refined sugar and all grains, restrict starches like taters and rice to rare occassions, keep fruit minimized and primarily berries, you will find being between 30 and 100 carbs is simple, even natural. I have to work to go over 50 carbs. I went over tonight deliberately, because I fast too much, by eating a banana with yogurt and strawberries. There was about 75g of carbs in that treat, but I wanted reload my liver after averaging under 20g a day for awhile. Anyway. This is a fun group and so is the food. We get BACON! If you set up a fitday account, it will track your carbs for you. I'm not one for lots of tracking so I just used a carb counter for whatever I was about to eat. |
Hey Daphne! I agree with Bob.
At first staying under 100g was hard, but within a week I was finding it hard to go over 75g and now its hard to go over 50g. I tracked my carbs and some calories at first to make sure I was on the right track but then stopped once I understood what foods would push me into maintenance mode or gaining mode. I have a lot to lose so I try to stay under the 50g mark and just go above it occassionally to throw my body off a little and re-fuel. |
Hi Daphne  and :welcome: ... Bob and Kara are right it gets easier with time... I had the hardest time staying under 100g when I started, now it's easy peasy  to stay under 50g and 30g... That's a great carb site that Bob linked, I use Fitday also...

Morning everyone!
Hi Daphne ... If you're already a meat and potatoes gal, primal is super easy! Simply choose your meats and fats, then fill in with nice leafy greens and a few nibbles of fruit. Salads are legendary here. Lettuce, cucumber, onion, radish, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, avocado, tomato, green pepper .... the possibilities are almost endless. I'm not sure how many carbs are in that example but since there's no grain or sugar ... it's not much. And I cast another vote for fitday although I don't use it much any more. I got home from work last night and DH had bacon out of the freezer to thaw. Isn't he a good fella! Ya know ... I've been dieting and/or healthy food nut for so many years people hardly mention any more. If I have to say something "Mmm hmmm ... I eat funny. You'll get used to me. Eveybody does." Or ... explain how gassy some foods make you and since you'll be all hanging out together .... |

Hi everyone ... I have been struggling while away from home. I don't need any advice, I think I know what to do but I could use some friendly atta-girls.

I'm the same way, no one questions me anymore ... They all think I'm a little off anyway  Kara, when someone asks about what and why I don't eat something, I just shrug and say I'm not hungry for that right now, or I'm really hungry for bacon for a change... |
Relax CJZee ... we appreciate you here even if you are struggling. You are smart and successful and know what to do!

HI Daphne, I found it easier to transition slowly down to under 100 carbs. I started by sticking to around 150 carbs a day for a week or so and then down to 100 for awhile and then lower.

Go CJ Go, Go CJ GO!!!!!!! I hope you're enjoying your time.

Thank you everyone for the links, advice and the warm welcome! I am excited to get started. When other lc plans became popular I never considered them because I had always thought that eliminating fruits and veggies such as carrots seemed odd. When I found MDA, however, it all made so much sense. I look forward in sharing my journey with you all!

Hi everyone...I've been IFing since my husband is out of town and it really is not that bad! I'm definitely skipping breakfast from now on, but skipping dinner wasn't very hard last night....as long as I keep busy.
Anyway, I wanted to know if we could put together a list of primal meals/recipes that we could make into a stickie? Or to be honest this is something I'm hoping you guys could start because I don't know how to do much on these boards but post. Nothing elaborate. I just think it would be helpful for us newbies if we could look at what some of you successful PB people eat for breakfast/lunch/dinner. Just a thought.....no worries if it's going to be too much work. Daphne: Welcome....these people have a wealth of information and experience and they are super nice to boot! Kara: Good luck on your vacation. You seem like a fiesty chick who can handle her own. If they don't read GC,BC throw it at em'. (hehe) CJZee: I'm just so impressed with what you have already lost. Hang in there! Susan: Never did comment on your hockey pic.....my husband still plays hockey and he's 52! He would be super impressed with you.....And I agree with the others, you ARE super tiny and cute! BibBob: Love your comebacks! I am a terrible debater.....I get all flustered when confronted. Good for you for being so well informed and willing to stand up for yourself. Kara (part2): You could always just eat the bacon and eggs and say, "I'm on vacation" and then brag to them all when you come home from vacation and have lost weight. Well time to pack up my computer and head back home. Enjoying a cup of coffee with real cream here at Borders. This is my favorite place to be when I have free time. |
Thank you! Thank you! everyone for your best wishes. I know your kind thoughts have helped, I'm pretty sure I've felt them in the airwaves ;). Anyway, I do feel better right now mentally and have done well today thus far. CJ

CJ- Your doing an awesome job!
I went running again today. Even though it was my second time out I have improoved since Mondays run. I did not have to stop & walk as much as I did on Monday & it was way hotter out today. I stayed pretty much on track yesterday (I think) I made pea soup for dinner. I chopped up 1 potato for in it, so I only ended up having a few bites of potato yesterday. Lunch was a salad & fruit. Today I had left over pea soup & DS was hungry for a steak after our run. I chopped up some stuff for a salad but I was full after eating just the steak. If I get hungry later I will make a salad. I am waiting for it to cool off a little bit so I can go hop in the hot tub to help relax my muscles after the run. |

tyma, way to go on the running :high: |
I very much agree with this ... I just think it would be helpful for us newbies if we could look at what some of the PB people eat for breakfast/lunch/dinner.
Truth or dare ... how many times have you been asked if you eat raw meat? Me? A few! And have I mentioned lately that I love you people  Daphne ... I grossly understood what low carb meant too. Even when I was eating boiled chicken breast and salad greens :?: |
OhOh I have the munchies! I'm a little hungry but not really. I know I dont need to eat right now. Its one of thoses munchie feelings that would not be a good choose of food. I hope I can over come it.

Hi,
This is just a crummy drive-by post. Having a family emergency here. I have actually stayed 100% primal so far. Best wishes to all! spanky |
Here's to good thoughts for your family Spanky.
|
Spanky- Hope everything is OK on your end.
Yesterday I had the bad case of the munchies but I am proud to say that I did not cheat! I was able to wait till lunch & ate a salad. For dinner we went out to a BBQ place. All their side dishes were not primal so I went for another salad with beef. It came with garlic toast that I did eat. So I guess I did end up cheating at the end of the day. Good thing today is Friday so I can run it off. Speaking of running, I was talking to DS. He has told me several times that he wished that DH would run a marathon or something with him but DH doesnt run either. SO I did some research yesterday & in Oct. there is a 5K run. That is now my new goal to be able to do that come Oct. DS has been great when we run. He runs cross country & track in school (which he usually places :-) ) When he runs with me he slows down to my speed & talks me threw the entire run. I know it has be hard on him to run slower then he normally would. |
Tyma -- A 5k in October is a great idea!! And congrats on only eating the toast, there's your 20% leeway...
I was hungry yesterday too and I used my 20% Daphne : For breakfast lately I just have coffee with lots of coconut milk and a bit of coconut oil, then eat brunch around 11:30... Most meals for me are a protein, a BASalad and another cooked veggie... Last day of work today  then off for four weeks :beach: |
My thoughts are with you Spanky.
Tymaboy....that is so cool. It is one of my goals to really run in a 5k someday. I did run in a mother's day 5k but wasn't ready for it and tore my calf for the second time. I worry about doing it again if I start running again. So maybe it's time for a new exercise goal! (Also when I say run, I really mean a slow jog for me.) But I think it's so great your son wants to do this with you! My son is only 5and I dream about someday doing things like that with him. It has to be a great healthy way to bond with him. Ilene, you already do stuff like that huh? (I'm referring to the running). I really admire that. And Susan....you play hockey for heaven's sake! Very cool! Well I lost 4 lbs this week but it's mostly because I had eaten so bad the week before and had gained 4lbs. But I'm doing well. Skipped dinner again yesterday..........wasn't hungry at all. It is a weird concept for me to only eat when I'm hungry and not feel like I"m missing out if I skip a meal. Crazy how we learn to live to eat instead of eat to live. Have a good Friday all! |
Wildviolet, :bravo: on the weightloss.... Yep I run or as you said jog, and love it!! I was in a 10k race last year and a speed walker passed me while while I was «running» :lol3: it was too funny...
|
Easy there Violet ... I only play once a year!

Yesterday I was able to read a bit farther in the book. I got to the point that it said I should stay away from peas :^: oops I was thinking that they were ok, I had made pea soup earlier this week & thought I was doing good making it from scratch. I also read about the protein shake. Does anyone drink it? I have been thinking about it for a while & now reading that it is ok I want to do it more. Do you use it as replacement for a meal? Or drink it at a certain time (before workout or after)? It says that the whey is the best so I will need to go to GNC to pick some up. |
Tyma, I used whey protein powder but sparingly and in a pinch and not really as a meal replacement but more as a snack... I know it's probably not good but I rarely eat right after a workout, even a weight workout, but it also depends at what time of the day it is, if it's at night I won't eat unless I am really really ravenously hungry... I have the GNC brand and add some blueberries or strawberries to it... I have never found a protein shake/powder that is actually good, I've tried a LOT too, I just make it and down it...

Hi all --
Glad to see things are going well for most. Spanky, I hope nothing terrible has happened - thinking of you! I have had a very heartbreaking week -- my husband and I had to put my dear sweet kitty, who I've had for 18 years, to sleep. She was such a good baby, and it was so hard. I suffered some carb explosion eating the last couple days - nothing too terrible, but definitely stress eating. Also, I haven't managed to exercise all week - just too depressed. Sleep has suffered too. It's really hot out, but I'm going out for a good walk now - I know it will make me feel better. Hope everyone has a healthy and very PRIMAL weekend! |
Claire- so sorry to hear about your kitty. I know how hard that can be. I have 3 cats & a dog. The day after Easter we had to put our Chihuahua down. He was 13 (only had him for 3 yrs) It was really hard on me as I work from home & we spent those 3 yrs together 24/7. I still can not look at his pictures as they make me cry. The vet gave us another dog 2 weeks after Taco passed. This one is DS's they bonded right away & was hard to say no when the dog was sitting on DS's lap & both looking at you saying please can I keep him.
