Scmead, she said specifically that she wanted to get FITTED for proper running shoes, and then find something comparable online or elsewhere for cheaper. Places like sports authority and foot locker dont fit you for running shoes at all. She wil have no idea if she pronotes, under pronates, midfoot strikes, has high rigid arches, etc, all of which are important components when being FITTED for shoes. Anyone can go to any shoe store and "try-on shoes", but i didnt believe that was her intention. She had been complaining of shin splints, and it was recommended by others (not me) that she get properly fitted and assessed for correct running shoes.
I was trying to point out if that was her intention, then i believed she was wasting her time going to foot locker and sports authority.

Thanks guys. And... mkroyer... darnit... just went to foot locker BEFORE I read this and had a "fitting". I thought it seemed kind of... well... overly basic (pretty much just shoe size, then I bent my knees and she "analysed" me.

I'm not positive if I want to do marathons... and if I do... it won't be for at least another six months... so... would it be bad for me if I just went for the shoes the lady at foot locker recommended for me?

I honestly don't know where to go for a shoe fitting. I'm in the Houston, TX area... so I'm sure there are PLENTY of places... I just don't know where to look.

I couldn't find a scale at goodwill... I'll double check to make sure we don't have one (I'm pretty positive we don't... but this isn't our house technically and many people have lived in it before us and have left things... so you never know what might pop up), then I'll stop by Walmart either later today or tomorrow afternoon. I have to leave in about an hour and a half anyways to go to a friend of my mom's who is doing a Mary Kay type session/makeover thing with me and my cousin... so yeah.

Oh... and I just got back from goodwill... got a pair of 12 Long Jeans (I need the long... and out of 50 size 12... there were only TWO longs... urgh), and a very cute light blue size 12 dress. I might show pics later with me "attempting" to put them on.

Thanks so much for all of the advice guys... I really really DO appreciate it, and am implementing some of them, not all, I really don't like nuts and nut butters, seeds, and seed butters... I find them completely disgusting, but I did add kidney beans to my salad, and have been trying to eat a far larger variety of HEALTHY foods... I'm just getting annoyed because what I think is a higher calorie food might be... but I didn't eat enough of it to make that much of a... well... "dent". But... I guess... I'm trying to go through everything in my own weird way (I make up excuses as to why it doesn't work, and then I try and figure out how I can go around those "excuses"... but I don't always post those reasonings on here because they happen in my head around 11 PM at night... and my internet turns off at 10:30).

This is exactly where planning would have been helpful. If you knew you were adding kidney beans to your salad, look up the calories. If you know the calorie count for your salad, then it's pretty easy to figure out how much kidney beans to add to reach whatever your goal is.

keeper... ahh... ok. I do have a book... so I can easily check. I just... well... I was having more fun making the meal than I was having a mind to check the calorie count.

I did add the entire can at first... but it seemed like way too many... so I put half back. (don't tell my mom... )

So yeah. Thanks.

There is a Fleet Feet in Houston and our local Fleet Feet is awesome. Using my google-fu, I also found http://www.lukeslocker.com/ . Never been there, never called, but looking at the website, it appears they take training and running very seriously and the customer reviews I've read online make it sound like they fit shoes the way mkroyer described.

Excuses are not age related. Trust me. I'm 37 and I can come up with excuses all day and all night long. That has been one of my challenges with my own weight loss journey. And that's not to say that excuses do not have validity. It can be a challenge to eat right and exercise when one has limited control over one's destiny. But harder is not impossible. Where there is a will, there is a way.

As I've taken a critical eye to my own tendency for excuses, I've made a rule. One "excuse" can be a reason, any more than one, and they are excuses and I no longer have patience for excuses in my own life. So, I might be too tired to run. That's okay. But when I start thinking, "I'm too tired, and my foot hurts, and I can't find my socks, and it's too hot" I cut mental diatribe off and try to figure out what my real barrier is. Usually, I just don't want to. And sometimes that's okay and I don't and sometimes I suck it up and do it anyway.

Sebrider, keep asking questions! I'm glad you're here! You'll get a lot of advice. Take what works for you and put the rest aside. There are seasons to our lives. Some advice might be useful now and some might be useful in 3 months or 3 years. You'll find your way. If what you're doing isn't working, tweak what you can. And what you CAN do might change into what you WILL do.
