I grew up in Kalispell; have a classmate who lives in Billings. Of course we drive thru Billings every time we head up there!
I have to say that our 'farm' wasn't big enough to support itself. We only had enough cows, pigs, and chickens to feed our family. We had some acreage in wheat but only enough to bring in $2-300 a year. Our home was quite primitive too; we only had running water to the kitchen sink, my mom cooked on a wood stove and we heated the house with wood, and we did NOT have a bathroom. My sisters and I did a lot of fine bonding on those evening walks to (and 'sits' in) the outhouse! I know it was a long time ago, and things were so different then -- I would not trade my childhood in the country for anything in the world.

Hi everyone. its raining agian today,havent been doing alot. my dh called last nite.no moose but he wanted to know how i was doing i said woof my weird sence of humor. sue i am glad you shared your childhood,its interesting and fun to see where we came from and what made us today. we've all got stories to share from our life journey.i was raised in n.minnesota,my folks had a fishing resort in whats now the BWCA(boundry waters canoe area) beteween neuton and basswood lake called Pipestone falls lodge we lived ina cabin summer and winter,outdoor biffies,baths in a wash tub only my parents and sisters for company in the winter. my uncle and aunt used to snow shoe in for xmas. the only way to get their was by boat or airplane in summer and snow shoe in the winter. my dad hunted and fished for our meat. i didnt ride ina car till we started school when i was six.school was fun and exciting for me,but my 1st exp was finding out their where seperate bathrms for boys and girls wonderful memories of sliding down the hill by our cabin in an old enamel dish pan. so anyone else want to share? lynn can hardy wait to hear how the marathon went.you are an inspiration. i dream about running.so here im am still"gorking" i think ive become the QUEEN gorker hope your weekends awsome rosey wave:

Hi Everyone! I haven't been "on" for most of the summer; it's been a busy one for sure. I did check in a bit to try to catch up. Had my g.daughter here for about 6 weeks & then my gr. grandson for 3 weeks. Just got back from a few days at the ocean in WA state, then a high school reunion, & then visiting my sister in WA & friends in the lower mainland in BC. Got home on Tues. night. Weight wise it has not been a good summer - I gained about 8 lbs. But I'm back OP now for sure! We did have a hot Aug & most of this month & now it has turned cool & you can smell/feel fall in the air. Anyway I want to say to the newbies; you will love this site! And I'm glad to be back too.
Rie ~ Weight Watchers turned out better than I expected ~ I gained only 1.6 pounds on my vacation. Now time to buckle down again.
My knees and joints have still been achy, but today, I tried to think about it in a different way ~ being thankful that I have legs and that even though I ache ~ I can walk. So much to be thankful for.
Sue ~ your description of your farm growing up brought back good memories for me. My parents didn't have a lot of money, so summer vacation for us was always a trip to Grandma's (we lived in North East Ohio ~ Grandma and Grandpa lived in South West Ohio during the summer ~ grandpa was a bee keeper and made honey there). They had an outhouse (double burner Big rain barrels ~ grandma would bring in a big pot of water and boil on the stove and we took our baths in a big wash tub. We had so much fun ~ and it was just simple things. Foil pie plates for frisbees, watching the rain come from miles away while sitting on the porch ~ it was real flat there. Walking in the warm squishy tar on the road in your bare feet. Laying in the puddles in the road and pretending we were swimming. The sound of the wind whistling around the back corner of the house. Going to the neighbors farm and feeding the pigs. Grandma taught us how to make a whistle out of a blade of grass, and little dolls out of those hollyhock flowers. And how to make a braid.
Rosey ~ I enjoyed hearing how you grew up. It is interesting to hear each others stories.
I am up way too early. I am debating with myself about working out and lazing about so when I finish this I will get up and go. I feel remarkably rested despite only about 6 hours of sleep.
Sue, Kalispell, as you know is one of the truly beautiful places on earth. I used to do training over there in their juvenile detention facility. Of course, Flathead lake is so pretty. When you pass through Billings, as you drive past the Holiday Inn, look south toward the river. I live about a mile down that way as the crow flies. I liked everyone's stories of childhood.
I grew up on a family farm. We owned 560 acres on both sides of the road. My earliest memories were about farm stuff. Grandma and grandpa lived just down the road and I spent lots of time there. The adults often gathered in the morning for coffee while they planned the day. I remember waking from naps in grandma's bedroom and having her dog escort me to the barn where she was milking cows. I loved the warm, sweet smell. Most of my memories of gma at that time, she was wearing a simple belted housedress with big rubber "overshoes" over her shoes. I was afraid of the chickens who pecked. My dad was so young and strong - deeply tanned, and always with a cigarette in his mouth or hand. We raised and preserved almost everything that we ate. "Grocery" shopping was for flour, sugar, yeast, soda, and the other things that we couldn't make. Ice cream was made on the back porch on sunday afternoons by someone turning the crank. We had tv's and watched Bonanza, the Red Skelton show, and Lawrence Welk on saturday nights. Tv was a family affair and everyone watched together. We all worked very hard - even us kids, but I didn't know that until much later. I think that the way we lived contributed to the way we ate. Even though we were not thin, none of us was really overweight. We worked so hard that all that food didn't stick to our bodies. Grandma and Grandpa, and my aunt and uncle are gone now. I have one aunt, two cousins, two little cousins, my folks and my kids. We try to keep the extended family traditions. I miss living together.

Mary, it’s odd that you aren’t able to sync your two iphones with one itunes. I sync my iphone, ipod and ipad with my computer. DH syncs his iphone and ipod with his computer. Maybe the difference is that they’re all different iProducts? I’m glad the MF diet is working for you.

Donna, maybe you could call a senior place and see if GM could try it. I bet the staff would know the fun women and know the complainers. I do like the once a week outings. BTW, Kai has been eating regularly for nearly 2 weeks. I believe SamCat and Kai and Ginger and Sissy alternate the pickiness just to keep us guessing. I’d think about putting a stop to their partyline, but they’re happy and would figure out a way to chat.
Val, I’m blown away my DGS started KG this month. Wasn’t he a baby just yesterday?
Rosey, DH and I were in Duluth, MN for 9 years. Love the BWCA. We took a plane ride when we went back to visit after the fires and was interesting to see from the air. Sad, but interesting.
Laffalot, welcome back. Sounds like you were a busy GG this summer.
Had a great day yesterday. DH and I went to town for a couple reason. Mostly because I didn’t realize my maintenance inhaler was empty so I needed a refill prescription. Since the asthma is slowing getting better after the MN trip, being without for the weekend wasn good. And my son’s b-day is on Tuesday so I needed to get his present and mail it. He’s the one that lives in town but we’re not having a good relationship at the moment. And I hate grocery shopping myself. Ok, I hate grocery shopping and I feel DH should feel my pain. So we did that. But before all the town errands, we went rollerblading. It was a blast. We went about 8 miles and my legs knew they’d gone the day before. But it was better yesterday than Friday because the trail we took was smooth. Friday’s trail was horrible and not good for rollerblading. So we really pushed ourselves and got a good workout. It was only 65 so it wasn’t hot and sweaty time. Gorgeous blue skies and no wind. Perfect for rollering. Did lots of other stuff but the rollerblading was the best. And the afternoon nap with the puppies. Then last night we watched Grease. It came from Netflix. It was by far my favorite movie when I was a teen. No other movie even remotely close. A couple weeks ago I’d gotten Top Gun since I’d loved that movie. Then when we watched it, I despised the male character (geez I can’t remember the actors name and I know he’s a “superstar”). So I was worried about watching Grease, that it wouldn’t live up to my memories. It was great. I still love it! I do have to say all the “high schoolers” look at least 30 in the movie, but I still love the story, songs and dancing. So Saturday was a great fun day. Then antithesis of work lately. Today is the Packer game so I’ll listen on Sirius. My neighbor is coming over for mochas (during the Packer game but I sent and email to reschedule if she can – if not I’ll miss a chunk of the game and that’s all right).
Time to feed the puppies. My world revolves around theirs. Nothing new there. Marie
Happy Sunday! It’s beautiful here, fairly cool. Fall is most definitely in the air, and some trees have already changed, overnight! I’m not quite ready for snow, but I’m loving these cooler temps! I added an extra afghan to the bed, and I don’t even get up in the middle of the night; I just snuggle in (with SamCat wrapped around my head) and sleep the good sleep. Lovely!
Lynn – congrats on your excitement! I don’t watch those programs, so I don’t know who those folks are… but your enthusiasm is contagious! I so much admire you!
Mary – it sounds like you’re coming along well on MF! I’m proud of you for sticking with it, and I just know you’ll do well.
Rie – all that fresh produce made my mouth water! I think I could live on vegetables, just love them all. Yes, SamCat is fine. It was apparently just some wee kitty bug, and he got over it quickly. At his rapidly advancing age, though, everything is a particular scare. I do think he was jealous that I got so much birthday attention and figured that he needed some attention, too. He very much enjoyed (and watched over and over) all the good wishes for his recuperation! Little snot.
Rosey – your childhood definitely prepared you for life in Alaska! I grew up in Denver and GM is still living in the childhood manse. There were 5 kids, and I’m the first daughter, second child... Catholic schools. Dad was an uppity up in the police department, and GM was a stay-at-home mom. We had a fresh cake every night for dessert! Very rigid, very strict upbringing, very paternalistic, corporal punishment, not a lot of mush, psychology, or philosophy. They did the best they could, as they knew it, and I think we all turned out pretty much okay (except for all that drooling out the left side of the mouth!). We went to Fullerton, NE (population <12, I think!) every summer to visit Grandma. I can still see her on the porch, flinging her apron up to her face, shouting “oy oy” as we drove up! She had ½ acre in potatoes and had an incredible green thumb.
Marie – I’m glad Grease and Top Gun (Tom Cruise) didn’t disappoint. I agree that Grease is timeless, always good! I chuckled (gently) at your observation that all the teens look about 30… the “kids” in Glee are all mid 20’s, too.

Think this will be my 4th day on Medifast. I decided to try the Blueberry Oatmeal again this morning...this time I cooked in the microwave (which I had been advise NOT to do but that's the package instructions) and I used some Splenda and 1 t. of milk (against the rules but its MY diet), and it was not so bad..not great but good enough that I kind of enjoyed it. So I think it just takes time and practice to figure out how to make it work for you. I'm glad I tried again and I bet it will make good blueberry muffins!
Marie - Before talking to the tech I did sych my dh's contact list on the same computer, and I can bring them up by searching but the problem is it merged them so we both got each others. That's why the tech said I needed to use another computer. But using my Netbook didn't work for some reason and I hate using it anyway. The more I think about it I think the tech is wrong...I think I remember a place where it asked me if I wanted to use my phone number's contacts...I didn't really understand it at the time but now I think maybe it asked that also for Joes so if he will let me I'll try again. He doesn't like all the fooling around trying with computers while I don't mind even through it can get frustrating...because I love working with computers. So even though I'd love to keep working on it and solve it he may not want me to try again with HIS phone as he's afraid I'll mess up again
So we are talking about our past (childhood) years? I was the baby in a family of three kids, each of us 9 years apart. My parents were (for that time) old enough to be my grandparents. Because of the age spans I can't say I did much with my brother and sister, and my sister married when I was only 9 so it was pretty much like I was an only child most of the time, but my sister was always very nice to me and I used to spend 1-2 weeks with her in the summer and enjoyed that. My brother was 18 when I was born and when he came to the hospital (I was the only one born in a hospital), the nurses thought he was my dad!
We lived in a town of about 7500 people in the midwest and my dad was a self-employed plumber and while plumbers may make good money these days, he didn't. There were many weeks when if a few dollars came in we were fortunate. But my parents believed in God and prayer and we never lacked for food or any of our basic needs. We had a large garden, worked mostly by my mom. I don't remember ever working in it but I know my sister helped sometimes. My father was a rather harsh, gruff but good honest man who worked very hard for his family. My mother was a housewife until my teen years when she started cleaning a few large homes in town and also began to work part-time in a small grocery store where by that time I also worked. My mother used a wringer washer that I remember...I guess before than she used a wash board, but I don't remember that. She didn't get an automatic washer until I was about to graduate high school and she never had a dryer. I remember helping her hang and bring in the clothes from the line. Even though my father was a plumber when I was little we had outside toilets and used catalogs both to read and also for finishing the job! Good old Sears & Roebuck! I remember once dropping my teddy bear down the hole , dad fished it out with a wire hangar and mom washed it and it continued to be my beloved bear. Later the city demanded everyone to have inside plumbing and my dad built a bathroom and installed everything nicely. He also got lots of work at that time. Funny, I don't remember how we took baths before dad installed the bathtub. Perhaps mom brought a washtub inside...I know that's how my sister did it when she was first married as they had no inside bathroom. She was only 17 and went into a worse living situation than she had at home in some ways..no running water even. But at least she had her own home with a good man and I guess that was enough for her.
My parents paid cash for everything even cars. They never had a new car and if once or twice they had to actually make 1 or 2 payments on a car, it really bothered them until it was paid.
Life wasn't perfect, we weren't the perfect family, but the faith in God they instilled in me has become the most important thing in my life now that I am older and is what has sustained me through many a difficult time. So I am very thankful to them for that. They never preached to me, but I saw them both praying and reading the Bible a lot esp my mom and that left a lasting impression on me.
I've enjoyed reading about all your past lives...it is interesting how they formed us and prepared us for our present lives.

I'm still OP today - it's not been easy as I "want" sugar, breads, etc. I got fruit at the farmer's market yesterday & have been munching on that when I get a craving - hope that helps.
I grew up in town, Everett, WA. My mom was "city raised" - my dad in his later teens also. So I've never had the experience of country living - I missed alot, eh? But we had indoor plumbing, electricity, etc etc & got our first TV when I was about 6 (It was so little!). We didn't have much $$ either but never had a lack of food on the table & or a table to put it on. My mom sewed all our clothes as well as her own until I was able to earn the $$ to buy "store bought". I went to large schools - my high school grad class was 532. I married the 1st time at 19 & divorced at 23 with 2 daughters. Remarried & dicorced. Now I am so happily single. I've worked away from home on & off during marriages; now happily retired. Moved to Canada in '66 with husband #2 & kids. I now live in a small town in BC of 2800 & love it. Hey, we do have a traffic light!
