9 days in a row with WATP! This morning I did the 2 mile walk. You can tell I'm really out of shape because I feel totally dead now.
I don't usually have much of an issue with the one mile workout. I sweat but I don't feel like I'm dead (like I do now). According to the fitday software, it didn't even burn that many more calories. Ugh! All that for maybe 10 calories burned. I think I'll go back to one mile for a bit longer. I don't want to kill myself with WATP. What a strange obituary that would be.

Heather - Slow down sister! Maybe your body needs a day of rest. Also I think you would have burned a lot more than 10 calories. It is true that you can't burn anywhere near as fast as you can eat, but it is definitely more than 10. Also, you seem to be really obsessing about weight loss at the moment. You need to stay focused enough to do what you need to do, but you also need to not let it stress you out so much. Stress actually produces a hormone called cortisol which can make you hold on to weight. That is also one reason you don't want to over exercise. Too much stress is not good for weight loss – so exercise is definitely good, but you don’t want to overdo it. It is just like calories. You need to find your sweet spot of doing enough, but not doing too much.
Battle – It never hurts to explore your options. We will definitely be here for you to offer support while you think about things. I am also torn in this area. Right now I am close enough to go home on weekends occasionally (aprox 3.5 hour drive), but I often think of moving back to Atlanta. I really loved living there. I also think about moving back to the Boston area, which is where my parents live. As they get older it seems more and more like a good idea, but at the same time I need to do what is right for my life.
Cyn – You mentioned starting to do Jillian’s workouts. I think I am going to follow her resistance program too. I just finished reading her book “Winning by Losing”. I thought it was a really good intro weight loss book. I like the idea of the varied routines over a series of weeks and having it all laid out like that. The only thing is that there is no way I am going to do jumping jacks or jump rope in the gym – at least not without some control bottoms.
Tina – It is not bad to eat when you are hungry. In fact it is an excellent idea. I would guess that your lunch didn’t fill you up because it didn’t have enough protein or fiber. It also probably didn’t have enough calories to get you through the afternoon. What is the calorie count on one of those, 300 maybe? That would not be enough for me for lunch.
Carol – I am totally with you on the class thing. I just can’t seem to motivate myself to work out at home.
Dusty – The issue I (and from the criticism you mention, other people) have with things like the Special K plan is that it isn’t something that most people could really do for the rest of their lives. What those plans mostly are is severe calorie restriction, which isn’t all that great for maintaining your muscle and losing mostly fat. When you don’t take in enough calories your body will start breaking down muscle mass because muscles use more energy. In the long run, you want as much muscle as possible since it does burn more calories and therefore you can maintain on a higher amount when you are done. But at the same time, it is better to start somewhere rather than not start at all, so if it is working for you right now you can always ease into something else later.
I am having dinner tonight with a friend I haven’t seen in awhile. We met at the gym and get together off and on. She just sent me an email and said – “Warning - I got chunky. I'm testimony that diets don't work.” I need to figure out how to not make this too awkward. Well – I am not going to worry about it too much. I will just be respectful and try and treat her the way I would want to be treated if I backslid. If she wants to talk about it, I will, otherwise I won’t. I will definitely follow her lead. The only problem is that there isn’t a heck of a lot going on in my life at the moment that isn’t weight loss related except for my job. I guess I can spend a good bit of time talking about our new CEO if need be.
So far so good this week. I will be skipping my class tonight to get together with my friend, but that’s ok. I need to do that occasionally. As long as it is only that – occasionally.
OK, there's gotta be a trick to keeping up with everyone on the thread. I read through, and by the time I'm ready to post I've lost everything. My brain used to function better - I swear I pushed out brain cells instead of babies each time I delivered.
Nancy - I love Nia (but I used to feel a bit silly when I first started). Who do you take from? I'm here in CT too, and there aren't too many Nia instructors around.
Debbie - you seem to have a great variety of exercise options right at home. I should follow your lead - it's been so cold here lately that I hate being outside (I've been in CT now for 14 years, but my body still expects to be in FL).
heather_dw - try not to worry about how many calories you did (or didn't burn) - you got up and moved!
babybear - someone may have already suggested this, but have you tried 1/2 diet and 1/2 regular?
gggirls- be sure to let us know when you get below that mark - I can't wait to celebrate
Kimmie - I take it in Stamford at the NYSC. My teacher is WONDERFUL. She has a studio up in Milford. Her website is: http://www.soundmindandbodyllc.com/ Where do you live? I could always ask her if she knows anyone who covers your area.
Well, it's not 10 total, it's 10 calories difference between a one mile and 2 mile walk in fitday. So it was 142 for one, 152 for two. I'm thinking about going back to just doing the one mile each day and then maybe adding in a session of Yoga to relax. How does that sound?
Hi Dusty, wecome! Sounds like you are on your way to a successful weight loss journey. Post often. We love to support people!
Sharon, the dogs are all getting better, thanks for asking. Sadie is running around like a wild child again, Marilyn's ears are so much better, and Daisy is doing well with her Rimadyl.
When you were on at 8:50am, it was 1:51am here. I don't think I will be up then... It would be great to chat sometime though.
Carol, I know you can do it!!!
Heather dw, YAY!! on the 9 days of exercise. Good for you!!
Nancy, have a great time with your friend and make good food choices...heck...why am I even telling you...I already know you will.
Kimmie, yes I have alot of exercise options but I'm going to try and find one more. I want a weight station. I used to have one of those, it did the legs, arms, abs, every part of my body and we had an eliptical. We got rid of both of those and now I wish we hadn't. So I'll go looking again on Craigs list.
I tried doing the 3 mile but didn't get far. My legs on the inner thigh hurt too much from doing the DDR. So I guess I will try it again another time.
It's another beautiful but bone chilling day! We are maybe going to get snow this weekend. Keep your fingers crossed.
Have a great day!
Debbie
Tina – I use to love Diet Vanilla coke it gave it a kick but we can’t get it over here now…
Johnnie – Well done on getting into smaller clothes it’s a great feeling I should imagine for you. I’ve only so far dug out the jeans and got into them but I am planning on buying some new items for the wardrobe next week when I hit Warrington with a friend. I hope I can get into a 28 (although not sure what that size is compared to the USA) Thanks for the comment on my avatar, I was having a bad hair day though!
Heather – Hide the scale. I hide mine after my weekly weigh in so I can’t go on them for another week, I would get to obsessed!
Ammi – Well done on losing the 2lbs, keep going!
Jeanne – Thank you!
Catherine – My biggest concern is them shrinking when I lose weight!
Kayley – Well done on 6lbs down, that excellent!
Dusty – Welcome to the board! I am sure your gonna love this place!
Debbie – Thank you!
Heather – Hide the scale. I hide mine after my weekly weigh in so I can’t go on them for another week, I would get to obsessed!
Carol – Well done on staying the same, it’s always better than a gain you know your doing something right!
Cyn – Thanks for the picture comments!
I bought a new juicer today since my old one broke a long time ago although it was a cheap one! Loving this new one determined to get some fresh juices and veggie juices down me! Already ordered a couple of books on juicing!
Phew I thought for a moment I’d lost this post…. My PC crashed!
Nancy, I'm in Orange, and I think we know the same Nia instructor.
The only instructor I know is the owner/director of Sound Mind and Body - Nancy Hammett. She used to teach at my old gym - UltraFitness in Derby. That gym closed, and I joined a different one (which I haven't been going to, but that's a whole nother story). I really do miss her classes - in addition to being a good workout, her classes helped me recover from the more intense, higher impact classes.
Right now I just need to get something started. I'm doing great sticking to my eating plan, but not so well with exercise. I was walking when the weather was warmer, but now I'm not doing anything regularly. It's so darn cold. I have TWO gym memberships but haven't been to the gym in three months!
Hi everyone,
I'm going to be on the 11:00 news again. Tonight's topic is women and the skyrocketing foreclosure rate. I am really happy that they're calling me again for another story. I hope they continue.
Today was tough foodwise, but I managed to bring it in on the highest end of my calorie range. I just felt like eating and eating.
Nancy: Have fun with your friend. I know I can relate to feeling ashamed and nervous about people seeing me after gaining a lot of weight.
Hi Kimmie, Heather and Heather, Annie, Kayley, Jeanne, Debbie, Dusty, baby, cyn, carol, and everyone else who's posting or reading.
JOHNNIE - AWESOME NSV! Cheers for your continuing success!
CATHERINE - Yes, "the girls" are an absolute nuisense, especially at a trot! If it weren't for the fact that I'd look like an egg without them, I wish them gone. They used to be an asset, in a long ago time and place...
Hi ALL! Am doing fairly well, getting back to exercising even. I'm trying to get more sleep though, since I know I haven't been.
The move to the new (old) barn went great last weekend, and the boys are all delighted to be 'home.' After the last move, Steega hated it so much he circled the stall and screamed for days. This time he just walked in and started eating, like "It's about time you brought us home, mom. That was a really bad dream we were living!" They've been out playing with old friends, and they have plenty of chow to keep their tummies happy. Young Shelby commented the first day that Cody used to pin his ears when she went in his stall at the ugly barn, but now he perks his ears up... with hay on his face. Gabe's stall is almost twice the size of the last place, and all the boys can see other horses, instead of being trapped in tiny, closed cages. Why did I ever take them there?? I even gave the girls, Steph & Shelby, and actual riding lesson - something I haven't had the time or the heart for in a long time.
Heather - That makes no sense that the 2-mile is only 10 more calories burned than the 1-mile. How long does it take for you to do each of them? There has to be something wrong with the numbers in fitday.
Kimmie - Yes! That is my instructor. She is so great. I admire her so much. Can you believe she is 60? If I can be half that in shape when I am 60 it will be a miracle. Heck, if I could be half as in shape as she is at my current age that would be amazing. She is really encouraging. She told me she has a daughter who is heavier so she understands what a struggle it can be.
Dinner was both weird and good. My friend went on and on about how she is unhappy and wants to lose weight - while drinking a regular coke and eating pasta with cream sauce. The thing is - I have totally been there.
I got home to find one of my student loan 1099s and I was shocked at the amount I paid towards interest vs. principal. It was actually horrifying. You know what the first thing I did was? Open the refrigerator. It was a totally unconscious action. I closed it right back up again, but still it was so interesting that that was my very first reaction.
And then the the news about Heath Ledger. What a tragedy. Ugh.
Heather -- Please relax about all this! Nancy's right about a lot of things. First, it makes no sense that a workout that is twice the long is only 10 extra calories. Just count your minutes and don't worry about the calories so much. Focus on the movement and your improvements and give yourself a day off here and there.
Second, you are trying to make a marathon into a sprint. You are gonna tucker yourself out waaaaaaaaaaaayyyy before you get there!!
Hi everyone else! I'm in the middle of a crazy week!
Again, just popping my head in here. I was able to read the posts, but no time for personals, as I should have been asleep about 3 HOURS ago! Eeeps!!
I probably won't have TOO many exciting stories to tell about my new job. I'll be driving a van for severely handicapped children. I'll be taking them to school, and back.
I went down to the license bureau to get my Chauffer's endorsement, so I can drive with passengers, and just TODAY, they changed the requirements to get it! So, now, I have to take in my Social Security card, my birth certificate, my license, another government document of my choosing, and 2 pieces of mail! I'm just getting an ENDORSEMENT, not getting a new license! UGH! And of course it had to go into effect TODAY!
Rant over. lol. I have to be up in about 4.5 hours, so I need to get some SLEEP! Hope you're all having a fantastic week, and I'll try and pop in tomorrow before work!
