Default **TMI** Question

Ok so I have been eating anywhere from 5g to 13g of fiber a day. Ever since I have started this "diet" I am having problems with constipation. Ive even resorted to taking Ducolax which i would NEVER recommend, it hurts sooooo bad that I was almost crying. Anyone know how much fiber I should be eating or any tips to help with my problem?

Are you taking in fiber via your foods or are you taking fiber supplements. I don't think that is too much fiber, but if you're taking supplements you need to take in lots of fluids. Even if you're taking in natural foods....are you drinking enough?

i dunno about recommended amounts, but i get 20gr fibre just in my shakes alone, plus i eat fruit, veg, and salad several times a day. drinking is important - if you're not taking in enough liquid, your body will extract it from your food which is one common cause of constipation.

10c of water should be enough - if you're not thirsty, it's fine.

what sources of fibre are you eating?

Im probably not getting the fiber from the best places. Generally from my cereal, bars, oatmeal stuff like that.

aaaah. lots of processed starch.

you're right - not the best.

oatmeal - switch to long-cooking or steel-cut instead of instant and that'll be fine.

otherwise, you want to see a lot of whole grains (brown rice, quinoa, whole wheat, multigrain, etc). adding fruits and veg to your diet will also help bigtime.

instead of chemical laxatives, try using metamucil. if you don't want to foot the bill or deal with the artificial sweetener, just buy psyllium at the bulk store - 1 spoon in a full glass of water. you can also add it while cooking oatmeal.

oh, no problemo - one thing: Fibre 1 or All Bran are both excellent for increasing your fibre intake but that's roughage - insoluble fibre.

oatmeal is very important because that's an excellent source of soluble fibre - also very important as that's what keeps your cholesterol down.

I get constipated every time I change something in my diet. But it only lasts a few days. Also, when I don't get enough fat. I usually solve it by having all bran with whole milk. I've tried this oil-thing from a drugstore that's supposed to be a laxative, but all bran with milk works better.

The best laxative or whatever I have ever tried is Magnesium Citrate its a little salty/sour tasting but it works wonders. I might do that tonight and then reevaluate my diet. Thanks

How much fat are you getting??

Try upping your fat intake. Good things like avocados, coconut oil, olive oil, flax. My youngest gets this problem occassionally and fiber doesn't help her, but fat does .

You think THATS a TMI-question? I was going to ask a TMI question, but if THIS is a TMI question, then mine is WAAAAAAY to unappropriate to ask.. Haha!

Anyway. If you get constipated from lack of fiber, then theres no problem to fix that. I know people that eat little have that problem sometimes.
Here in Norway they sell something at grocery stores that helps. Its called flaxseeds (Used Google translate so not even sure if its the right word). But its suppose to be in the baking aisle at the store. A small spoon of that helps A LOT.

Do you eat much fruit? That might help get things moving. I've also heard that eating too many eggs can cause constipation, I'm not sure how true that is but perhaps if you are eating lots of them, cutting those down might also help

It could be just your body getting used to your diet changes but what I've noticed that works for me to make me "go" is 1-2 cups of coffee or Miralax. The coffee makes me go within 1-2 hours and the miralax takes about a day.

I dont necessarily get constipated but sometimes i can go 3-4 days w/o having a bowel movement! once i do its just a normal one but yeah i hope this helps!
