I just asked people to add a new post for last week, so I could do a 'How are we doing so far' post. When we get to Easter, I'll trawl through all the posts for the final figures.
February is almost over . . . where did it go ?????
Starbrite - only 10 more pounds to go !!! keep it going
Jen516 - Did you think of a non-weight goal??? I always like to see everyone's goals and NSV
Kaebaka: You're having a lot of nsv lately, no more plus sizes, more lean muscle, ONE-DER-LAND . . . where did you find the formula for the lean muscle mass??? I'd love to do that. Sorry about the ortho visit . . . I am right there with you . . . I had an accident and ended up having 3 knee surgeries in 3 years along with rehab for those 3 years . . . never a good thing . . . . but FOCUS on how far you've come and how well you're doing . . . Running the 2 miles is a GREAT challenge. I know you can do it. Oh and you have thunderstorms <soooooo jealous> I'm so tired of the snow . . .
OK, ladies SPRING WILL COME and we will all be outside running, biking and hiking . . . soon I hope
So apparently it comes from the US Navy, although I haven't cross-referenced it anywhere else to see. It seems to give pretty reasonable results although I'm sure that it's only accurate to within several percent or so.
Where abdomen = waist measurement, and then you use your hip and neck measurements plus your height. All need to be in the same units, but it doesn't matter if you use centimeters or inches.
The other methods on the calculator website all require skin fold measurements, which I don't have the equipment to do, or the experience to measure accurately. I am going to try to find somewhere local that I can go to have my body fat % measured to compare to the results from the formula, to try to get a feel of how accurate it is for me.
I did!!!! Yesterday, I officially signed up for a 5k in April. That's a goal. PLUS, I actually walked 5k around my neighborhood yesterday. So, that's a goal already met!
Another mini-goal done this week: I packed up BOXES of clothes that are too big now! (I have a TON of clothing. It's not only nice to get rid of the bigger stuff, but also nice to have more room in the closet!)
Kaebaka - Thanks for the links on the BF%. It's so hard to know! My scale says one thing, 44%. And has said the same thing for the last 40lb... I ordered calipers that say 33%. One of the links above gives me 33%. The formula above gives me 66% (I'm not taking that one... absolutely NOT!) And a different formula I found based on age and BMI gives me 43%. WTH?????
The formula above gives me 66% (I'm not taking that one... absolutely NOT!)
Woah. You're right, that sounds way too high. Did you use log base 10 or natural log? I'm not sure which one excel defaults to, but maybe if you try the other one you would get something closer to the probably more reasonable 40-ish range?
And a 5K - That's awesome! Is it a charity fundraiser type event? I've sort of started looking for one around here to sign up for, but I really want to increase my average speed before I sign up to do anything like that with hundreds of other people.
Yep, I googled and found a ton in my area to choose from. Picked this one more because the date works than anything else, but it does benefit the River Parkway area near my house. I was concerned about the time too , but I did a practice run yesterday and compared my time to the list of finish times I found online. Now I know I won't be the last one in!
And the 66% came with a log base 10. A natural log yields a BF% of 250%!!! Oh well, I know I've eating well and not doing anything crazy, so I'll just not worry so much about the BF%. It'd be nice to track, especially now that I'm adding more exercise, but I'll live without it! I suppose if I just pick one method it will still show improvement over time even if it's not exactly right on, huh?
at 250% body fat. Yes, definitely not very likely! I agree that using one method and following that over time should probably be a reasonable way to track progress. Yay for not being the last one in! I'm sure that you'll push yourself hard and do awesomely, it sounds like a great personal challenge for this spring.

Weekly weighin
Challenge start: Jan1 = 240lb
Last weigh in: Feb19 = 226
This week: Feb26 = 226lb (No change, but I'm pleased with that considering I ate out with friends/family 4 times this week... And I was home all day trying not to eat. Back to work tomorrow! )
Challenge Start: 213
Last week: 194.5
This week: 196.0 (+1.5)
Hmm.... My measurements are all the same from last week except for thigh (-0.5) and waist (-0.25). So I will try to console myself with the idea that I lost some fat, but I must be retaining water or something... I never noticed water retention with TOM before when I was heavier, but I guess I never paid all that much attention to fluctuations as small as a couple pounds, either.
But I have been eating rather terribly this past week starting with my sister dragging me out for National Margarita Day on Tuesday. And then pie... and then cake... and then more cake... and then steak with appetizers and dessert yesterday... So. I will refocus starting today and not let my friends tempt me into eating so much higher than I would like to this week!
