Hi Gang!
A little late reporting in but woke up late, got DH out the door and hit the treadmill. I've been putzing around since, doing laundry and stuff. I'm happy to report that the stressor I was experiencing ended yesterday, so today is straight back on program with no excuses. Meg was right that I did learn something new in this journey and about myself. I hope I'll be better armed if and when it happens again. Robin and ledom, hang in there. And Robin, thanks for the heads-up on Julie's column. I should start taking the time to read it each day. ledom - I'm betting you'll be kayaking before we're back in the water. We have much we want to do to the old girl, and have to wait on some of it until the weather is warmer. I'm going to paint the entire deck, so I'll be hoping for a dry Spring. DH is doing some alterations to the cabin, and she will be getting new sails and a motor. So I'm hoping we'll be taking her back down before May 1. This is when it gets hairy because the exterior of the house and yard need attention too. At this point, I'm kind of glad that I didn't get a job because time is a premium. But I am still keeping my eyes open for a gym position, even if it's just to get the 100 hours in. I've started my interior Spring cleaning, and hope to finish painting the first floor, which I'd like to start next week. Sooo, there will be less time spent on the net, but I will check in every day. Well off to do pilates, and then lifting later on this afternoon. Hi to all and hope you have a safe and healthy day! Edited for - Hi Meg! You were posting as I was writing. Everything is better as reported above and today is a NEW day. Thanks for the love and hugs. I was late getting up and only had time to make a quick post at the Book Club. dip the relieved |
Too funny, Dip -- we were posting at the same time!

I'm still thinking about the importance of habits, and I think that both Juju, at Skinny Daily Post, and Karen (and everyone else who's also mentioned this previously) are right on the mark when they say that automatic pilot may be one of the best tools we have.
I find I am the most successful when I have the means on hand to pack the following lunch: cooked brown rice or kashi; cooked chicken, fish or meat; cooked spinach. I can -- and do -- eat some variation on this combo almost every single day. Oh, sometimes I swap another veggie for the spinach, or a toss in a can of tuna instead of the cooked protein, but day in, day out, this is the core of my routine. When I don't do this, I don't do well. I also always have at least one apple in the frig at work, and often times two. They're neat, easy to eat at my desk, and filling. Like Karen, I too have a standard shopping list, and I've repeated it so many times that DH is learning it. "Do you have enough eggs," he'll ask, or "Should we get apples?" The morning exercise is almost as automated, but I get ambushed when I get tired. I have a little more trouble standardizing that one. However, I feel so much better today having put in my 45 minutes, I'm going to have to try simply "powering through" a tired morning and seeing if it revitalizes me. Methinks this is a question of balance: some days I'll need to get up and other days I need the rest. But I digress. One last thought -- I don't think automatic pilot behaviors are the same as planning, as in failure to plan is planning to fail. Rather, automatic behavior is a step BEYOND the planning. Heck, I don't even have to plan to buy 2 dozen eggs, 2 quarts of cottage cheese and 8 chicken breasts any more. The stuff just jumps into the basket. And with that happy image in mind, I've got to go back to work. Cheers. |
Morning all!
I had a great night last night and had another run on my treadmill! I have lost some fluid over the last fews days which is great - I hate to feel bloated. Hey to everyone! JC |
I'm not having a good day at all... I'm TIRED!! Yes ladies, that dreaded fatigue that will get your stomach every time! Mine anyways... So I will keep it short. So short that I'm too tired to write...
BTW the kids did have a great time at the concert last night... I do think they are tired too! |
Hello! I've been doing more lurking than posting the last couple days because life has been hectic. Schools been nuts, plus violin lessons, we're trying to find a house, and I'm having my wisdom teeth taken out middle march (finally) so I've been all hopped up on pain killers at night so I can sleep pain free. Things are calming down now thank goodness! I also finally bought the BFL book so I am looking forward to finishing that (makes a lot of sense so far).
Meg - I heard you mention in another post that random burning while working out can be attributed to a build up of lactic acid. Any way to alleviate that? I took a step class last Saturday morning and my calves started burning after only 5 mins(!) the next 3 days I had to walk on my tippy toes to avoid searing pain. Another problem is just doing any aerobic activity the muscle that runs parallel to my tibia on the outside starts burning as well (my tibialis anterior maybe?). I had to get off the treadmill after 8 mins the other day because I couldn't take the pain anymore. If anyone knows a way to get rid of this I'd appreciate it. |
Piper- To get rid of lactic acid buildup between sets, walk around a little. The burning along your tibia when you're doing aerobics is probably not lactic acid but the beginning of shin splints. How old are your shoes? Do they fit properly for your foot? Somewhere early on this week's thread, Meg posted about getting fitted coreectly for running shoes and what a difference it makes. I'd take a look at your shoes when you get pain along your tibia.
I've had an incredibly long day, and a whole slew of new clients. I have a new woman I met with today who has been "workout out" (turns out she has 3,5, and 8 lb dumbells) for 3 years, is 5'9" and weighs 190 lbs. She eats 1100 calories a day and has been on a plateau for 1 year. Personally, I would have gone insane long before. I don't think she really believed me when I told her she had to start eating MORE! I'm really hoping for a turn-around for her. I did convince her of the lifting part, the eating may be a harder sell. Off to bed- early clients tomorrow :faint: Mel |
Mel - Thanks, I had a sneaking suspision it might be shin splints, but since I've never had them before I wasn't sure what it felt like. I bought my shoes in August, but have been considering a new pair. I guess I better get on it.
|
Piper - you remind me of J-Lo in that picture!
JC |
Hmm...I posted but it disappeared..........
JC- You are the third person to say that. The only way I resemble J-Lo is I got a little 'junk in my trunk' :o |
Piper, I agree with JC, you remind me of J-Lo in that pic, too! :D If you hit coolrunning.com, they have a whole slew of good information on shin splints and various other leggie type ailments that hit runners (or even waddlers, like me). I'm fighting shin splints on and off, too - every time I push it too hard, my shins remind me that I'm a neophyte and to take it slow. I'm thinking about trying a different pair of shoes, too. I don't think my Saucony's are what I was looking for. If it is shin splints though, you don't want to continue working through the pain, it will only make it worse.
And now, I'm off to treadmill land! G'morning, LWL! Hope you all have a wonderful Friday! |
Good Morning All! See Meg, I'm up early but a little short on time for now.
Mel, was glad to see your response on Piper's suspicsion about lactic acid. I'm studying the anaerobic system this week. When I read her post, I thought something wasn't right that she was experiencing burn pain after only a few minutes. Man, I am so ignorant on this stuff! But I am loving what I'm learning - as s-l-o-w as I'm getting it. Piper's photo reminded me of someone too, and ya'll nailed it - J-Lo. Ilene - Hope you got a good night's sleep, I went to bed early too to avoid the tired munchies, and slept well, finally 2 nights in a row. (Seems the hot flashes are subsiding again. Yay!) I tried the lunges on the treadmill with 8# hand weights last night and once I got the balance down, did OK. The result - "you gals are nuts." That's exactly what I said after I got off and walked around. My knees are hurting a bit this morning, but I'm going to see if I can do cardio anyway. I'll try them again Saturday or Sunday, tee-hee. Well, got to get DH out the door and finish off the laundry. Check back later. dip |
Tgif!
Morning, Raven and Dip and all! It’s just not a good morning around here until we hear from Dip! :D Glad you’re sleeping better, Dip — I find that it makes all the difference in being able to control my eating. I’m hurting too from those lunges of Mel’s!
I have to hang around the house to get DS out of bed early and out the door to his job at the recording studio because they’re putting on a workshop for voice-over talent — the folks who do commercials and cartoons. So cardio will be later this morning. And then taxes. I’m on the TurboTax bandwagon too — I’ve used it since the days when we had to tear the strips off the sides of the printer paper (man, am I dating myself!) Right now my kitchen table is covered in stacks of papers and it seems hopeless. I’m planning on working out mid-afternoon to give myself a break and clear my head. My weekend challenge is going to be dinner at DH’s boss’s. I don’t know what will be served and there’s no way I can take my own food, so I’ll have to wing it and do the best I can. Even though it’s only four couples, it may be catered (boss’s wife doesn’t cook — they eat out most of the time) and I just don't know what to expect. Hopefully it won’t be, say, fettuccine Alfredo, garlic bread, Caesar salad, and some chocolate dessert or some diet nightmare like that. For me, the key will be to only have one glass of wine — otherwise, I will end up eating everything in sight. What’s everyone else up to this weekend? |
'Morning, Meg! :)
My weekend will be spent stable-sitting. Which is a cool thing, because that means we all get to ride till we fall over. This weekend I work on my two point till my legs give out. That and the trip to Super WalMart and taking my son to the mall to spend the allowance burning a hole in his pocket. ;) Good luck with dinner! For me, that would be such a disaster. I still haven't learned how to face down stuff like that. Even going out to eat at a place where I know what to expect and what I can order is still terrifying. Let us know how it goes! G'morning Dip! Careful with those knees! I need more squats to build up my quads so I don't wreck my knees running. Yay. Off to the showers, walk the dogglets, and work! Toodles! |
Goooooood Mornin' LWL
Had an awesome nights sleep!!! So I'm raring to go! Today will be a clean day if it kills me!! Plans for :tread: and :strong: this afternoon for sure.... The only plan I have is to eat clean this weekend and go in the gym and do cardio on both days, yes the :queen: will be shinnin'... Well not much time gotta go... Take care all... Lets becareful out there! |
