Grrrr.... I spent 2 1/2 hours getting home last night due to a downed tree on the train tracks and missed Xfit  Luckily, I did morning cardio and had a great yoga session at lunch. But I really wanted to go to Xfit!

I live on 1/2 an acre of lawn, gardens and woods. I'd happily trade it in for .2 of an acre or astroturf with no trees at this point! Endless yard work workouts have lost their charm! Our neighborhood is highly manicured. I'd like to get a goat and grow a meadow, but would be run out of town

I was hoping to go to Crossfit today but I knew if I didn't go to work, my husband wouldn't let me. So I started getting ready for work, prepping my lunch, etc and realized that standing wasn't such a good idea and I have a cold sweat and I'm nauseous. Umm... Guess Crossfit is out tonight.

Pat - our kids don't get out before Memorial Day, they are still in school until the beginning of June, the extra holidays are weeks here and there scattered through the year.

Mel - that is annoying about the train!

Hey Rhonda!

Nelie - stay home until you feel better. :)

Good run yesterday, yoga this morning, strength training & stationary bike planned for tonight.

I have a question about timing exercise. On Tuesday afternoon I did leg exercises with my trainer. This included squats and other routine exercises, and I pressed over 400 pounds. Normally I don't feel the muscle soreness until 24-48 hours later.

I decided to do an hour spinning class on Thursday morning. My legs were definitely sore, but I did the class anyway. By that afternoon, my legs were hurting, but I could get around.

How long do you wait between serious workouts before you exercise the same muscle group again?

Also, when do you eat before a workout, and do you prefer carbs to protein before or after? Or, does it matter?

Thanks in advance for any advice or reflections.

Rhonda

Rhonda, the minimum time I've read is 24 hours, mostly I see 48 hours, but I'm with you, 2.5 or 3 days is better for me! I try for a schedule that goes LB, UB, cardio or active rest, LB, UB, cardio or active rest, and rest. Of course the workout days have some cardio for warm-up and cool-down, while the other days are longer sessions with intervals.

Shannon, sounds like you're back in the swing of things.

Mel/Nelie - sorry you both missed XFit. Feel better Nelie!

Woohooo! Today's workout was taking down a dead weeping cherry that was really big, recovery, then an hour of indoor climbing at Vertical Extreme! I haven't climbed in ...oh...30 year! It was great :)

Hey ladies, did any of you watch the Games on the live stream this past weekend? I was pretty much glued to the coverage when I wasn't having to work or do chores. Looking at all those six-pack abs is enough to scare any Xfitter straight with the food (for at least a week). I fear we'll be seeing some of those workouts at my gym, or at least the stupid DL/pistols/DU wod...whimper!

I took the second half of this week easy on the workouts. My trainer was out of town, and I figured a few easy days would be good for recovery. Saturday, I had fun just playing around with the jumprope...we have one lady at our gym that used to do all those double-dutch type competitions in her youth, so I think I will ask her to show me some fun things to use in my warm-ups. I figure, the more control I have of the rope and my hands/feet/timing, the easier double-unders have to get, right? Meantime, I've been having good success chasing 10 sets of 5 DUs in my warm-up, about every other morning. I just get 5 and stop, or best effort, ten sets, so if I get 2 and trip on the rope, I still count it as a set. This is working better for me than trying to do max DUs every time.

Saturday I also practiced handstand kick-ups. Flexibility and confidence are still big issues for me, so I did them to the big tractor tire and then to a jump box and some parallets which were a little lower than the tire. I'm working my way to "hands on the floor" but slowly.

I tried some butterfly kipping pull-ups with bands and without. I couldn't quite get chin above the bar with less than the blue band, but it wasn't bad for a first attempt. Just getting the swing down is a coordination challenge at this point.

Well, off to the gym. My trainer will be back tomorrow, but my rest weekend is over, so off I go...

Can anyone tell me why I can leg press 450 pounds on one machine and not on others? I wish I knew the names of the machines, but the one I can press the most weight on is one that requires you to sit low to the ground, at an angle, with legs above you and press the weights up. The other two machines require you to sit upright and push out: one moves the seat back and forth, the other has you move a plate in front of you.

Frankly, the one that I can do so much weight on is scary, with the weights above me. I never do it without the trainer there spotting for me.

I have asked the gym people about why I can do more with one than with the other two and I get answers like: the machines are different. Uh huh, they are, that's true. So, does anyone know what the difference is about. Does one require you to use more muscles than another? I just don't understand this.

Thanks,
Rhonda

Mel 07-19-2010 08:59 PM

It's the physics of it- and some of the machines are just calibrated differently. The only time you really know exactly how much weight you are moving is with a free bar (squats). The angle of "push", the cabling of the machine in the case of the slidey seat one, the angle of the foot plates- these all make a difference.

Sorry- I guess I just said the same thing...they are just different!

Cheryl- I watched some of the games. WOW. The workouts have started sneaking in. We just got new yellow bands which everyone calls "mental floss". I can do about 10 decent kips with them before it all falls apart. I'm not sure I'll every get to the no band for more than two. :p

I didn't sleep last night and ended up getting up at 4 am and doing an hour and a half of ss cardio. I was a zombie all day and skipped Xfit because it was a run-row combo and 1) there was thunder and lightening, and 2) I didn't think I needed anymore cardio of any sort today!

off to bed-

Mel

Tejas 07-19-2010 10:48 PM

Thanks, Mel. You may have said the "same thing" but you did so with more explanation. If the only true measure is squats with a bar, then I have less to brag about

But, as we say here in Texas: if you did it, it ain't bragging!

Lydia227 07-20-2010 10:07 AM

Hey, just wanted to give a shout out to let you all know I'm still alive. Busy packing for the next few days. On Sunday, I'm picking up DH from the airport around midnight. (ack) he's flying in from San Diego from a conference, making a real quick trip to Columbus to help load the storage containers with me. :jig:

I"m sitting here looking everything right now. House is still pretty much intact and I have no inertia to get started here. I guess because I know at the end of the day it's not ever going to look like my home again. But...it's time. And seriously, I have a really nice place waiting on the other end of this. I just need a :kickbutt: I suppose.

No workouts this week. Between the move and the yard work here I think I"ve got the whole "functional thing" covered. I'm going to try to get just one more workout in once everything is loaded.

Tejas: I love your saying...If you did it, it ain't braggin'. So many of us here could use this permission to brag. Thanks!

Tejas 07-20-2010 11:59 AM

Lydia, the saying is yours! Someone at the gym told me I was competitive. I said "No, I just like to brag." So, if you need "permission" I'm giving it to you

I read that you are in the middle of a big move. I did that in October-from Toronto to Texas-after 34 years of living in Canada. You have my sympathies. It tries your patience to say the least.

WaterRat 07-20-2010 01:22 PM

Here you go Lydia! :kickbutt: I personally hate packing up and moving. Unpacking in a new place is much more fun. :)

Mel 07-20-2010 09:56 PM

Lydia, I was thinking of you today and wondering how you were doing

Rhonda- Love the saying! And TO to Texas must have been culture shock, to say the least. Dh and I lived in Toronto a looong time ago. We were up there 3 weeks ago for a family wedding and it is an entirely different city.

Today was a pull up fest.

It was 9 years ago tomorrow that I had that "click" and changed my life. I have a lot more bruises (cause I'm a gym klutz) but I sure am happier with myself!
