I hope everyone has had a good weekend (with a little, but not too much chocolate!). I am almost happy to get back to work tomorrow, if only for the order it brings to my day. Being off work for a week, with a lot of family functions, has its challenges. I think there is a small gain, but I'm trying not too focus on it.

I've already reserved a bike tomorrow for the noon spinning class so that should help. A week of too much food and no gym has been a bit difficult.

Lydia - you must tell me everything about your personal training session. You know I've been tempted too but since I found out my favourite instructor can't help, I've put it on the back burner for now. I really want to make sure that I have the right person before I spend that kind of money. So, for now, I'll have to live vicariously through you. And weren't you supposed to give spinning a try yourself one of these days!? ;)

Nelie - yay on the collarbones! I remember when I first saw my hip bone...okay I was lying down but still it was very exciting to me!

Well, the weather sucks here right now and I hate not being able to go out and have a nice long walk/run so it's definitely time to get back to the gym tomorrow.

:D

Lydia227 04-08-2007 09:26 PM

Elisa: I will let you know how the session goes. Actually, I'm kind of low key about this first session. I'm excited to be working with someone but I'm just not real sure where to place my expectations. So, I'm going in with a list, just in case. I'm working toward the goal of becoming fit enough to work with a personal trainer from another studio. Its more expensive than my gym which is why I'm trying to get myself is better shape before I begin. :dizzy:

Yeah. `Bout that spinning class. ~sigh~

I'm still trying to get enough nerve to walk in there. Its so hard for me to try something new. But, I'll do it. :dunno: I'll just surprise you one day with a post to let you know when it happened. My hairdresser takes spinning classes too. She thought she truly injured herself and couldn't walk for a couple of days afterward. It's just that I know that when I do this class is should probably be on a Friday morning so I have the weekend to recoup. No way do I want the bruises to interfere with my regular workouts until I become accustomed to the class.

Have a great evening everyone.

Lydia, you must know our Bob's waitress? Is she an Ohio import?

She tried so hard to get me the wildfire bbq sauce on my chicken, and when I declined and ordered broccoli, she was like, 'with the cheese sauce, right??' ...... cuz WHO EVER in this world would eat broccoli plain??? lol :barf:

I guess I shoulda just told her that they make it sooo good there that I can eat it plain, just fine! :D

elisa - I marvel at DH's hipbone. It is so awesome. I was lying down the other day and i felt below my breast bone and there was something tender but firm there. I asked DH if he had one and he said he thinks there is a tendon there and its the solar plexus. I've never felt it before and I'm feeling my ribs more and more each day.

silverose1209 04-08-2007 10:45 PM

Ugh, I am stumbling around in a stupor today :( I had a diet Snapple and a Diet coke, both decaffeinated, yesterday. But I didn't read the labels! I'm so used to almost everything being sweetened with splenda now, that I'd forgotten to look for the dreaded aspartame. At Around 2:30 am, I finally realized why I was still wide awake!

Not going to be a very perky day...somehow it's leg day :p

I think all Bob's waitresses are from Ohio. Isn't that where the chain originated?

nelie 04-09-2007 10:02 AM

silverrose - jump right in!

rabbit - Meg says ribs are next so I'm looking forward to that :) I can feel my ribs but they are no where in sight yet :)

Mel -

Hello everyone else :)

I'm doing well this morning. My leg soreness from Saturday's townhome grand tour is finally gone. I can't wait until we go real townhome shopping. I'm kind of bummed that regular crunches aren't giving me soreness anymore. I have to keep challenging myself with ab work and that is tough :) Oh well.

elisa822 04-09-2007 01:48 PM

Finished my spinning class today and really enjoyed the sweat to help try to erase some of the food damage I've done over the last few days.

I found my old HR monitor, got a battery and tried it out. I got my heart rate up to 150-155 but couldn't get it much higher than that. From what I can tell from the little information I've read, I think that puts me at about 80% (give or take). It's hard to explain...I felt like I was working really hard but, except for a few sprints, I wasn't really winded. I don't know - felt like a good workout so I guess that's what counts!

:D

WaterRat 04-09-2007 01:56 PM

Morning all -

I had a great start to my weekend, with 2 hours of training for the half marathon (and I'll tell you that walking on a track for 2 hours is only marginally better than 2 hours on :tread: ) It was cool (35F) and very windy at 9am so about half of us opted to stay indoors, mostly the walkers. The runners had a shorter session.

However, on the way home I stopped at the grocery store and wrecked my car in the parking lot. Sigh. It was a freaky accident, and although I was going about 5mph, my car (a Honda CRV) rolled onto the driver's side. Not an easy position to get out from, let me tell you! Of course, I live in a little tiny town, and for nearly 20 years, I was an active member of the ambulance/fire service. So, I knew literally every emergency person who showed up, including the police officers (because they're the same ones who come to the library when we have problems). Arghhh! One of the EMTs was one I had taught! Oh, and I knew the tow truck driver too. But, I was not hurt - beyond my pride - and there was no one in the other cars I hit (they were shopping). DH was great once he got there. I'm waiting for an adjustor to call me today so we can get moving on whether the car will be totalled or fixed. I have rental insurance, though for the absurd amount of $25/day! So far the places I've called want twice that. We can go a few days on one vehicle, but after awhile it gets problematic. (We have NO public transportation here.)

So, Easter was fine. Didn't go out or even fix a big dinner, nor did we have any candy! (Had to laugh at your Easter candles Fran :) ) and today has started out well. I'll be working out at home tonight as DH has a yoga class in the opposite direction from the gym. I may be able to walk in the neighborhood. We're going to check out the ice on the road (no sidewalks) around the rest of the block on our way home.

Nelie - collarbones! Yay!!

And I love RR myself. Closest one is in Anchorage though, so we don't get there often. Never eaten at (or even remember seeing) a Bob Evans....

 to everyone. Have a great day!

Mel 04-09-2007 02:24 PM

Pat! :yikes: I'm relieved that only your pride (and your car) were wounded!

Hi Amy! Welcome :) Jump right in! We love new folks

Leg workout- sort of done. Certainly wasn't stellar or any personal bests, but I did it. Light cardio in a bit.

Fran- I thought your Easter candles didn't sound real appetizing, either!

Lydia227 04-09-2007 05:36 PM

Pat: OMG. Will you be careful out there?! :dz: No really, how awful. I'm so glad you are not injured much beyond your pride. But still. You must be very shaken after this experience. I hope this doesn't affect your ability to prepare for the half marathon. I'm so inspired by you as you train for this event. When I'm puttering along at my gym I'm thinking, "Pat's doing this, I can too."

Mel: Aspartame will keep you up at night? I had no idea it affected people this way. I mostly avoid it too. Good job getting those legs done anyway.

Elisa: :sssh:I found where "They" keep the schedules for the spinning class. I'm one step closer to taking it. :lol3:

Rabbit: Did you survive Easter break today? I think the bike rides sound wonderful. I can't wait till we get some decent weekend weather and we can put air in the tires of our bikes and just go. My luck the beautiful weekend will follow the first Friday I take a spinning class and there will be no way I'll be able to sit on a bike for days.

Amy: :welcome: Please do jump right in and join us. So tell us about the BodyPump class you are taking. I've heard a little about them but it's not offered (as far as I know) at my gym. We do have a body sculpting class but, well, I'd rather do that myself. ;)

Okay. So I had my first session with a personal trainer today. (drumroll please) IT WENT JUST FINE. She is going to be just great! We are sooo on the same page. I came in with my list, she had a list and during my warm up she revised the workout she had planned for me to incorporate the things I wanted to learn. We did a bodyfat analysis. Nothing too technical. It was with the electrical pulse and I don't remember the exact number but I think it was 27, my bmi was 24.7. I'm pretty jazzed about this because I'm pretty certain that my bmi before I began a year and half ago was more like 34. :goodvibes:

So my goals are to lower bodyfat percentage to 22 percent give or take two on either side by July. I also want to work on muscular development of quads, hams, back, and triceps. These are all of the areas that have been neglected for the past ten months. :dizzy:

New things I learned today were squats on the smith machine, lat pulldown using the Hammer Strength equipment, and triceps pulldown with Paramount equipment. Fran, I thought of you too as she had me doing deadlifts. I really didn't feel anything in the hamstrings and kept increasing the weight... then, I got home and found it difficult to pickup DS2s little race cars all over the floor. Good pain though, in the hamstrings. Nothing in the back. (whew) She also strictly advised me to use a spotter during my bench presses. Since I workout alone she or the director would help me if another floor staff member is busy. ~sigh~ Let me just say, "I hate to ask for help with anything!" But okay. It would be really embarrassing to get stuck under the bar. And she's going to know if I skip the exercise. :p

I'm a little sore this afternoon but the most bothersome pain isn't muscular. Its the spot on my back where the bar sat during the squats. That alone will keep me from doing it again tomorrow. It's okay. I'll be back at it again on Wednesday. So fun. I meet with her again next Monday. I'm so glad I decided to do this.

elisa822 04-09-2007 06:47 PM

Pat - I'm so sorry about your accident. I'm glad that you're okay. It just sounded really scary. Accidents can really shake you so make sure you take it easy. I remember when I had a tiny fender bender and got home to tell my husband and just started to cry.

Lydia - Wow and congrats on the session. I'm so happy for you and just a little envious. You know I want to try some PT too. Fit with the right trainer is key so that sounds great. For me, for now, I can't justify the money but maybe one day. I'm sure I'll keep thinking about it. I am certain that, with the right person, the experience could be invaluable. I know I'm getting in better shape but I am sure that I could use my time more efficiently. Enjoy! And, oh yeah... spinning, spinning spinning. Did you hear that? I thought I heard something. ;)

And I think that Body Pump and Group Power are the same thing. A full body workout with barbells and it's all choreographed to music.

:D

Mel 04-09-2007 07:34 PM

Lydia- Your session with the trainer sounds great! You shouldn't work those legs again tomorrow anyway! If your gym doesn't have any bar pads, buy your own, paint your name on it with white finger nail polish, and don't let it out of your sight! We call them wimp pads, but I always use one! And getting stuck under the bar ONCE is a time honored tradition called "wearing the iron necklace". I've done it once. It was embarrassing. Very embarrassing! After that I learned why guys without a spotter didn't put clamps on the bar- so they could dump the plates sideways if stuck. But that's no very safe because the bar could kick up sideways as plates slide off. Ask for help :)

BodyPump is a trademarked name and program. Any gym that offers is has to pay a monthly fee for the use of the BodyPump name and the specific monthly music. The instructor has to be certified by BodyPump, not just certified as a group fitness instructor. It has nothing to do with the quality of the program or the instructor, just whether or not they are using the official choreography and music. Similar classes are called all sorts of things at gyms where they don't subscribe. PowerPump, PowerSculpt, BodyWorks, Group Power....

Lydia, your PT session sounds like it went great!! I wish our little gym had some PTs, but it's the trade-off for living in the semi-country. :)

Really, I'm okay. I've just been dealing with adjustors and stupid car rental people all day - grrrr. They won't know til tomorrow if the car is repairable or totalled. Depends totally on how much the replacement parts cost. DH thinks I should wait to get a rental as the ins only pays for 30 days. I can see already that our schedules conflict in places. Let's just say we do better with 2 cars. And I was actually just stopping at the grocery store on the way back from my 2 hour walk - and since I still have 10 weeks, I'm not worrying about training at all.
