there is no "per serving" rule. How big is the serving, what is it of? 3 tsp (12g) of sugar in your coffee would be a lot of sugar because it is all "added sugar" and there is no nutritional value to the food. Each gram of sugar has 4 calories. 12 g of sugar would be 48 calories. How many calories is in a serving? On the other hand, an apple has 13 g of sugar and is not too much for one food.

It is all relative to the nutritional value of the food and what does it offer in addition to sugar.

Cereal without fruit should be less than 4 g
Anything with added sugars should be eaten in moderation
Natural sugar such as dairy products and fresh fruit are not usually a concern.

So anyway, y'all are posting menus maybe I'll give it a shot. I dont usually plan ahead too much. I am really working hard at making this something I can live with for the rest of my life, and planning my snacks etc, isnt usually part of that. I tend to try to have healthy things around and pick from that.

Workout snack (early am either before or after an intense workout) either:
-Kashi instant oatmeal (for a big workout and usually only if I pumped - that makes me very hungry) or
- ezekiel toast with a smear of light cream cheese, or
- 1/2 clif bar or packet of gu
- post workout maybe 1/2 banana and 10-15 almonds

B: eggbeater omelette with mushrooms, onions, ham and light cheese - other veggies as available (I often toss in whatever leftover veggies from dinner the night before). Ezekiel toast if I havent had it with WS, Apple if I didnt have a WS

Snacks (morning and 1 or 2 afternoon):
-celery with laughing cow light
-light bread with hummus
-lowfat string cheese
-sliced raw veggies
-sometimes some nuts
- sometimes V-8
if I am really hungry a salad or a small bowl of soup.

Lunches - almost always a salad and either
- a frozen dinner
- a sandwich with light bread and hummus and deli meat
- leftovers from dinner
& usually one Dove dark Promise.

Dinner: - despite recommendations to the contrary this is always my largest meal. I'm in a food coop that makes meal kits (kind of like "dinner's ready" but cheaper) It is entrees only and most of them dont come with a starch, if they do it is whole grain. Not all are lowfat or lowcalorie, but they are all homemade and better than eating out and cheaper. I make the entree and then add salad and at least one other green veggie and occasionally a starch if I feel it is needed.

Total for the day - aiming for 2000-2100 calories, unless I run more than 4 miles in which case I add 100 calories per mile extra.

My gods, this feels great. I have NO MORE SCHOOLWORK FOR THE YEAR. I turned in my two finals yesterday and I'M DONE. I have two meetings next week, one with my department advisor and the other with my college advisor (UCSC is split into ten individual "colleges", and you affiliate with one college when you first start at UCSC. So you have an advisor at your affiliated college, plus an advisor in the department you're majoring in.) but I'm not that worried. Just need to hash out a new quarter-by-quarter degree plan, since I have gotten a little off-track. I'll make it yet. May take me 5 years instead of 4, but the important part isn't WHEN I finish, it's THAT I finish. Remind me I said that when I go to tell my dad that I'm graduating in Winter quarter (ends in March) of 2008 instead of Spring (June) 2007.

But from now until Jan 3, I have NO work to do for classes. I'm FREEEEEE!

Ahem. Sorry. Am I going on, a bit? That's me, right there. Hehe. I'm just really happy to be done so early. My housemate has a paper due next week and a final exam next week, too. I feel kinda bad for her, and she's mildly irritated with me for being done so early. I told her I'd cook for her while she's working, though, so she can get some real food instead of getting fast food all week. Not that I'm any great talent in the kitchen, but at least I try.

So why are people going to so many holiday parties? Are these office parties or what?

So much activity, how exciting...

Having worked in the grocery industry for 10 years let me just say the biggest way to save money is to make sure you are shopping at the right store. It may be the same chain of store, but every store has different prices based on the income of the shoppers in the area of town. For example in HEB in Houston one store can have milk for $3.29 a gallon and a store five miles down the road can have milk at $2.79 a gallon. This goes with all items in the store. Also make sure you that you are checking your reciepts especially on the day that the new add comes out. There are thousands of prices to change and there are some that do not get change and some of them are on the ad specials. See if your store will honor competitor ads as well and this will save you time. At HEB we would lower our price to match any competitor. Just a few ideas.

I have also heard the same thing as Jasmine no more than 3-4 grams of sugar per serving. I have even to heard to limit yourself to 3 fruits a day because of all the sugar. I don't listen to that advice and eat all the fruit I want.

As far as working out with the cold. How about powerwalking at a local mall or a local highschool/college basketball court. I sometimes run the stands at the basketball court.

Everyone seems to be doing so great with diet and exercise! You all are such motivation! Have a great weekend!

Party for Nikaia! I remember the feeling of being done with classes. What a huge relief.

Tomorrow I have a house warming party and a wine tasting party. Sunday a town christmas tree decorating party, Monday a work Christmas party, and Wednesday, a client christmas party! It's just that time of year when everyone likes to throw parties for anything. OH MY GOSH! It will stop in January.

My husband is picking up Subway on the way home. I always get the foot long veggie with no cheese. I've had 400 calories so far today because I did not want to go over my limit. I want to exercise 75 minutes tonight. It's easier when there is good tv on - Ghost Whisper

I so need to get those Christmas cards done tonight!

Hey dolly! Yes shopping at the right store is key! The best one out here in my area is a Stater Bros. It is a big chain and has quality food and consistently LOW prices. There are some big chains out here like Vons and Ralphs where they offer to "double your coupons and get you in with a FEW good "sales" but then gouge you every where else. I shop at ralphs rarely and when I do it is because they are close to my dh's work, well 20 minutes walk, and if I need fruit or to pick up just one or two things etc. BUT I will not get it there if it is overpriced!

Clip your coupons too! However it seems they are mostly for processed food! *sigh* But there are usually a ton of health and beauty and cleaning coupons too!

Your welcome Jeni! I think we should post whenever we have a great healthy recipe, and our food menus daily are fine too! I also wanted to add about the chili beans that I also add water, so no one try that at home with no water! Just did my stats on fitday and here is how that recipe breaks down, don't forget I also used 4% lean gr. beef:

1 serving = 1 cup

223.86 calories

1.78 fat grams,
sat fat 0.503
cholesterol 16.25
sodium 390.7
potassium 881.5
carbs 35.84
protein 17.23

If you want the vitamin stats just check my fit day! I had 3 servings(had it for lunch too!). Anyways lots of good vitamins in there! With this recipe today I am doing I am not adding any salt. I am using my no salt steak seasoning and chili powder and cummin and lots of oregano, plus on my own some chili flakes! Next week I want to add some gr. pepper, more onion like maybe 2 cups and maybe try some cayenne!

Good evening everyone! I missed you all AGAIN today! But had to study for my 2 exams this morning, thank goodness they are done, one more week of classes then finals...AHHHH!! I wanna be done with this semester already!!

Tomorrow we are getting our tree and then doing pictures in front of it. should be a full day. Big football game going on too!

I have done VERY well with food today, makes up for tonight because we are having drinks with friends. Moderation..everything in moderation! I need to get my focus back again! I've been doing "okay" but I can and should be doing much much better. What is it with this time of year and my getting lax with myself. Life could be so much better just 10 lbs lighter!

I hope that everyone has had a fantastic day today and is ready to have a fabulous weekend!! I hope to get to check in with everyone this weekend!

~melissa
