G'morning, Queenies!

 'Twas not an easy thing to drag the Royal Butt out of the bed this a.m. And once I was up, I was so wishing I could take the day off. I don't feel awful just tired. :coffee: I guess I'll make recovery my goal for the day -- go for a little walk, do a set of tai chi, try to rest up a bit betwixt and between work. Day, um, seven?

Restless night in the royal environs, I guess. I woke at 4:13 but refused to let myself get up and eventually drifted off before the 5:20 alarum.

Anagram, I'm so happy to see you in the palace! You're right to focus on getting enough rest. Darn mono is the last thing you needed to contend with. I hope you managed to get a snooze today. Feel better!

Ceara, your dinner sounds like it was fun. I adore irises, although I haven't got enough of them to need divvying up. Weeds a'plenty, lord knows :dz: It's coolish and drizzly here today but there's a bit more light in the sky that I'm hoping means it's going to clear up. :crossed: I'm thinking I might get gussied up and take a stroll downtown later. Browse some jewelry and trinkets. :)

Pyro, welcome to the Palace. That looks like a good set of goals. OF COURSE you can make it work -- let's hit it!

Katrina, yuppir -- nary a nacho passed these lips :ziplip: Nor did pizza, cake, ice cream or veggies and dip. A cup of herbal tea

Re: the stairs -- the point of the research was that you start doing what you can and that improvement is very fast. You know: if you can run up five steps, you run up those five and just continue to go up the stairs as fast as you can for the balance of the minute. Or if walking quickly is it, that's just as good to begin with. I started running up and down my stairs at home to check out a minute's worth and was surprised that I had to go up and down four times to get in a minute. And I was staggering by the end of that 60 seconds, I can tell you, just barely able to keep going. Hmmm... I do have to go for a walk today... I might just try that stairwell.

One of the compelling things about it, for me, is that a minute, even full-out, doesn't seem to have any negative effect on one's energy for the day. Whereas if I push myself too hard, for too long, I'm often very tired for a couple of days and prone to getting sick if there's anything going around. Which is not good, and I think not indicative of a stellar state of health. But I aim to fix that. I find myself thinking, in light of DH's new focus on his health, how hard it is on my poor body to function with all this extra weight. And how hard my poor heart has to work if I overeat. I guess these are good things for me to be thinking about. :chin:

Another thing the report said, though, was that most people are very reluctant to go full-out, even for a minute. Interesting point -- seems illogical and yet, I can sure feel that reluctance myself, right here and now. Hmmm...

Okey-doke. Must be off. I'm going to try to mix periods of efficient work with periods of rest instead of the usual ineffectual slumping at computer that I usually do when feeling not up to par.

Hope that all royals take great care of themselves today and ensure that their real needs are met. Avanti!

Walked the whole road...am hot and very sweaty. Will throw in some sheets and go dig for a very short bit....then shower and off to work!

deleted2 09-05-2006 05:25 PM

Hello Queens, I'm still here---altho I'm doing the 3 steps forward, 2 steps back thing. :o
Had a sugar relapse a couple of weeks ago, but am firmly back on the wagon and have committed to sincere sweaty exercise. I'm even thinking of giving WW a try, just for fun. Gawd knows I've done everything else!

Kaylets 09-05-2006 06:57 PM

Hello all,

I too, am back.... one day on....

Work continues to be very, very busy. I put in8.5 hrs on Saturday and barely was still knee deep when I went in today.

Sunday, we met my stepdaughter at Yankee Stadium and did the NY ball game thing. We only bought water there. Otherwise, we'd have to mortgage the house. Can of beer was $9.

When we got back home that night, one of our beagles who had been to the vet Thursday for vomitting and diareha was not doing well. We found blood on the floor and carpet and then realized she was vomitting blood.
We went to the Emergency Vet and tests showed her kidney's had failed. We had to put her down. It was nearly midnight and we had spoken to 3 people there so perhaps something got lost in communication but I wound up having to show the vet the medications our own vet had fillded for us Thursday to prove that we had indeed "ignored the symptons until it was too far along."

I did some internet research and found that often a dog can have a low grade kidney infection for a while. If this was the case w/ our beagle, she certainly didnt act as though she was in pain, although she really was never a "sit in your lap" dog. She liked to be massaged and rubbed with a towel but wouldnt climb up on your lap.
In additon, this past Thurs and Sunday night too, the dog's temperature was taken and she didnt have a fever.

The emergency vet says that there wouldve been more symptons if the dog had been poisioned. In addition, he was sure that the anti vomitting medicine wouldnt have an allergic reaction.

Its sad but she was so very sick and suffering so it was a relief to know she wasnt suffering anymore.

Very weird to have to defend yourself to a vet.

Hello to all. Believe it or not, I have to take the other dog to the regular vet to get a shot. She is allergic to fleas and is a very, very itchy dog. She had a shot about 2 weeks ago that worked wonderfully but it must have worn off as she is scratching again.

Eydie! I Can relate!

wsw 09-05-2006 09:11 PM

kaylets- i'm so sorry to hear about your dog!

pyro-welcome to the royal court.

anagram-keep getting as much rest as possible. bouts of insomnia on top of mono must really be miserable.

arabella-hope your cold is completely gone soon.

and hello to katrina, ceara, eydie, and to all in our kingdom, mentioned or -un. not back on track completely yet with the exercise, but getting there. taking a while to get over this stupid bronchitis. have to adjust my food plan again, and decrease portion size a bit more before can say i'm totally back on track. fresh start tomorrow.

Kaylets 09-06-2006 05:18 AM

Hello all,

DH is also "back". His visit to the DR was very motivational as DH came home w/ a fistful of perscriptions. For a long time, his DR suggested fiber powder w/ water b/4 each meal. For the first time ever, I decided to give it a try myself and I think it did make me feel "fuller" faster.

Right or wrong, I drank lots of caffeine yesterday which did not affect my sleep last night. I think that might have only been because I was so drained from the emotions of the weekend.

Welcome to the new royal!

Hello and hugs to all....

Thought of the day :

"Do all the good you can,
By all the means you can,
In all the ways you can,
In all the places you can,
At all the times you can,
To all the people you can,
As long as you ever can." John Wesley

Question of the day:

"Name the canned food you buy the most."

***************

KETTLE IS ON!

katrinabgood 09-06-2006 07:00 AM

Canned food, eh? I would have to say either tuna fish or canned tomatoes...I probably use more tomatoes, they are so versatile. I buy all the different flavors: mexican w/chiles, italian w/ oregano and garlic, plain w/sweet onions, or just plain ol' plain.

Favorite recipe with the above mentioned canned diced tomatoes:

Chop one medium onion, saute in about a tablespoon or two of olive oil.
Add a few cloves of garlic
Slice or chunk one or two small zucchini and one smallish yellow squash, toss in with the onions/garlic.
After a few minutes, add one can of diced tomatoes, salt and pepper...maybe a pinch of sugar. Simmer fo r a few minutes. I don't let mine get too mushy, but dh LOVES his mushy and especially leftover for the next day.

I serve this as is, but my sister likes to then plop it into a casserole, sprinkle some bread crumbs and shredded cheese on top and bake til the cheese melts. Either way: very easy, yummy and good for you!

So, here's MY question of the day:

What is your favorite healthy recipe? The easier, the better!

Thanks, Kaylets! I'm so sorry to hear about your doggy. And how awful, having to defend yourself to the vet in the midst of such sadness.

I'll finish this later from home,,,,it's time to go!

Arabella 09-06-2006 07:30 AM

Good morning, Queenies!

Still tired. DH is extra restless at night and kept waking me up every time I drifted off. If we had a spare room, I'd be there. Our mattress is supposed to protect you from your partner's tossin' & turnin' but... doesn't do a great job. Ah well... I may take a little OTC sleeping pill tonight to try to ensure a good night's sleep.

Still on track. Haven't made myself WI at home yet -- why I stopped weighing every morning, I don't know. "Forgot?" In any case, official WI will put an end to that. I don't feel like I've lost any ground but sometimes one (esp. this one  ) can really fool oneself. :crossed:

Plugging along, anyway. I woke up at 4:30 and meditated while water was heating for tea, schlepped off to the gym with DH and came back and did some yoga. All I need to do now is get the water and have some fun... oh yeah, and that food thing :dz:

Kaylets, I'm so sorry about your pup! What a horrible experience -- and I can't believe the vet was so rude, nasty, off-base and unprofessional! That must have made the whole even more of a nightmare than it already was. I'd like to get ahold of that man! :rollpin: No wonder you slept well after going through all that!

QoD: Tomatoes, hands down. I often think it'd be a good idea to buy a box of cans. I use them for pasta sauce, soup, chili...

Ceara, you sound extremely energetic -- could you send a smidgen of that mojo this way?

Anagram, hope your fresh start day yesterday helped! I think our goal, every day, should be to give our bodies what they need. We're so dependent on them, it behooves us to treat them well  Rest, recover.

Eydie, how nice to see you! I hope all is well...

WSW, happy fresh start day! We all need to look after our health -- it just makes such an enormous difference to how we feel each day, doesn't it. I've got a bit of the bronchitis-like constriction of the throat, which happened to me about this time last fall too. Ginger tea might be the answer.

ceara 09-06-2006 08:29 AM

Hi Eydie! Glad you popped by to join us in the :dancer:....I know that is the one I'm doin'!

Kaylets...what an experience. I'm so sorry for you. I hate those after hour clinics mainly because my experiences with them and others' recounts are horrid. Kidney failure is rotten...amd liver is just as gradual. The only way to know sometimes is by expensive, intensive blood work. :grouphug:

QOD...canned dog food!

Kat...that is kinda like a "rataouille". We do similiar things in my family....probably with more zuccini though...I love that kind of thing over brown rice....hmmm...I should do up some. I used to microwave a tomato, whole. Then de-skin it and mush it up, add baking soda and then some milk....and Parmesan cheese and it was a single serving of tomato soup. This one goes back to my childhood...1 can of tuna, 1 can of sliced mushrooms (or bits), 1 can of green beans, some diced onions. Mix. Place in single serving oven proof bowls, slice or grate some cheese over top and bake until warmed through....these days you could do it in the microwave.

 Arabella! I slept in until 8 this am....the phone woke me up. Of course I was up at 12:30 and 5:15. Fullish moon, fuller bladder.

'K....off to let out dogs, and then walk I think. Still want to do the sheets....ran outta time. That will be # 1 on list after I get dressed!

Gotta change that siggy!

katrinabgood 09-06-2006 08:55 AM

There, that's better! Home again, home again....the shoes are off, my music is on, my beeper is safely tucked away in a drawer back at the hospital....ahh!

I could have finished my post at work, but when I finally had a few precious minutes to myself, a co-worker had other plans for me. Namely, to listen to her rehash her last few days at work, how busy, short staffed, over worked, under paid, yada yada yada, blah blah blah diddy blah blah blah. I was mid-post and she just stood there, blathering on and on

 Can anyone give me any tips on how to politely tell people like that to SHUT THE :censored: UP, I DON'T CARE! I'm continually amazed at how many people LOVE to rag on and on and on. LET IT GO, PEOPLE! LIFE'S TOO SHORT!

There, now I feel better.

ANYWAY....

wsw and anagram....recovering royals...take it slow and easy...Feel better ASAP!

Eydie...I've done that weight loss two step myself, many's the time! You may like WW...very flexible and forgiving. I'm enjoying it.

Oy, now the husband has plans for me. :o Not that! I'll never finish my post at this rate, but I've lost so many recently, that I'll just keep posting piecemeal til I get it all out.

Hi, ceara, Arabella, Pyro...anyone else?

See y'all later!

Arabella 09-06-2006 12:18 PM

Aha, Katrinabg -- you snuck in while I was still hunkered over the keyboard. Re: Raggers-on -- y'know, you can hardly beat "SHUT THE :censored: UP!!!" It's the phrase that springs to mind, along with images like :rollpin:

I hear ya! I've certainly been held captive whilst someone enlisted their many, many grievances. I wish I had a socially acceptable and effective solution, I do. There's a woman in my writing group who does the audio version, then writes the text version and reads it to us  Gawd save us!

Here's my recipe, from last night's dinner: mince a couple cloves garlic, add to 1/4 c. yogurt, mix in 1 T. olive oil, juice of half a lemon, some curry powder, crushed chilies and salt. Spread on salmon filets (other things work too) and let it sit for a bit before broiling or baking. (baked -- maybe 20 mins. at 325?)

Goes great with: Green rice -- Take 1 c. brown rice and 2 c. water. Blend the water with a little bunch of cilantro (leaves, stems & all -- just chuck it in there), fresh or powdered ginger, a little salt and maybe a chicken boullion cube or packet. Bring liquid to a boil and add the rice, lower heat, cover and simmer for about 45 mins. Fluff & stir with a fork before serving.

I had it with baked sweet potatoes and spinach. But I just saw a nice Dean Ornish recipe for sweet potatoes boiled with chopped apricots and ginger that would be swell with it. 1 big sweet potato, 6 dried apricots, chopped, big chunk of ginger or minced, depending on whether or not you want to leave it in. You chop the sweet potato and cook it with ginger and apricots in a minimal amount of water , then remove and reduce the cooking water for a sauce.

I just had the spinach plain but another recipe I like is:

Pop some cumin seed (maybe a T.?) into a dry pot and put it on a burner until it roasts. Take it off the heat and crush with a rolling pin or some such. Add it to a pint of yogurt with some salt and crushed chilies. Add cooked spinach, broken up, a little at a time until you get a nice consistency -- it's better a little "soupy."

There now -- very healthy, tasty, easy and economical. Where's that patting self on back smiley? DH even said how tasty it was, which is an accomplishment.

So sorry to hear about your dog, Kaylets. She was a lucky dog to spend her life with you!

katrinabgood 09-06-2006 06:31 PM

Ooh, thanks girls...I love getting new ideas for food. Can't wait to try the 'tomato soup' with one of the lovely ripe tomatoes sitting on my windowsill. :T

So, school starts tomorrow for my son. (sophomore year) The extent of our school shopping has been a new back pack to replace the one he's been using for three years and a new pair of Vans. (sneakers) Boys are so low maintenance! He has so many pairs of jeans and tee shirts, so he tells me he does NOT need new clothes. I'm fighting with him right now to come with me to get a few new shirts. Oh, and some notebooks and pens. I need to feel as though I've done my 'back to school motherly duties!'

Gotta run....keep fighting the good fight!

Pyro 09-06-2006 09:53 PM

Hello, square 1. Didn't think I'd see you again so soon.

Yes, that's right, I'm back at day 1. The first two days went great-got a lot of calcium, a TON of excercise, and all my water (plus some). Today, however, went by so fast that, what do you know, it's 9:30 at night and I haven't drank (drunk? drinken?) more than 10 or so oz. of water. I got through everything else, had some water-filled foods and other liquids, but I most definately did not meet my water goal.
Ah, well, guess there's really nothing to do but brush myself off and hop right back on the wagon. I'll try again tomorrow and see how well that goes.

Sorry about the lack of responses to anyone else's posts, but I'm in a time crunch and am going to have to get off in about 30 secs. Talk to you all later, and I hope you're all good.
~Pyro

katrinabgood 09-06-2006 10:35 PM

Sounds like you're doing great, Pyro! I would have guzzled a bit more at the end of the day and patted myself on the back for getting all that exercise in!

So we completed the "school shopping," my boy and I. (Why wasn't the girl this easy?) First stop Kohl's...one T shirt for $4.99, and only because I insisted, given that great price, one pair of gym shorts, one package of socks. $29.99, total. He couldn't get out of there quickly enough. On to Staples for those notebooks. Apparently, every one else in a 10 mile radius had the same idea, because the place was MOBBED. It appeared as though the end was coming, and that the only thing that could save us all would be the frantic stockpiling of loose leaf paper, highlighters and post-its!

I tentatively picked up a 5 subject notebook, looking to him for guidance, when he told me that he still had three of them from last year, never used. "Got pens?" I asked. "Tons" was the reply and we were out of there in the blink of an eye!

School shopping done! :cp:
