Southern Comforts

Hey Everyone!
I thought I would start a group for southerners...we have our own special needs! Where else do they have restuarant menus where everything fried! I thought it would be fun to have a group where you could say "that krispy kreme store up yonder (or over town)" or "I reckon I'll pass on the fried okra at the family reunion" or "sweet tea calories don't really count."

Transplanted southerners and wanna be's are welcome too! ;)

I'll go first with an intro:
I'm Beth, 38, and live in Charlotte NC. My family is from Asheville. I lived in Maryland during my formative years (my father worked for IBM) and so occasionally have a fit for steamed blue crab. I am watercolor artist and graphic designer looking for a job. I'm married to a wonderful supportive, if out spoken, man. We have 3 cats and 2 dogs, but no human children.

It feels like I have been trying to lose weight all my life. Sometimes successfully, and more often not. I just keep on keeping on...hoping to find just the right formula of diet and exercise for me.

My weakness is chocolate and eating out! We love to try new restuarants. Yes, I know I could make a healthy choice, but what is the point trying some place new and having steam veggies and grilled chicken? I need a new attitude :p

Right now I am working with a personal trainer 1 day a week, and doing weights twice a week, and aerobic exercise of some kind 2-3 days a week.

Looking forward to meeting y'all!

Beth

JuliaTN 08-22-2005 11:53 AM

Hey Beth, I'm Julia from TN -hence the user name. I've lived within 75 miles of Chattanooga all my life except for a year in London. Believe me, I don't miss the food there (blood pudding - what were they thinking?).

I don't have huge cravings for Southern food most of the time - ethnic food is usually my weakness, especially Mexican and sometimes Thai or Indian. However...if forced I could easily live on barbeque stuffed potatoes and fried catfish. I have been making myself steer away from the little trailer on the side of the road that is Choo Choo BBQ. I've been pretty successful in taking the foods that I really love a tweaking them to make them healthier and less calorieful. I still haven't found a good sub for the BBQ though:( Does anybody have any ideas?

TheNewChristy 08-22-2005 12:03 PM

Count me in Beth...I love all things Southern!! :p

I'm 23, been married for 3 yrs and have a son who's 16 months old. I'm your typical Southern girl whose favorite combination is good food and good company, who likes a big ol' glass of sugar with tea ( ), mud boggin, fishing, good deer jerky, watching the Dawgs, etc.

I got a little chubby in middle school and got teased, so by the end of high school I was an anorexic working out several hours a day. In college I met the three Anti-Christy's: late night Papa John's, Zaxby's chicken, and Liquor. I was cured of anorexia, but not of poor eating habits--I just went from one extreme to the other. When my son turned 1 and I still weighed 205 (up 97 lbs from my lowest adult weight) I realized something HAD to be done.

I had a church experience at the end of May 05 that really opened my eyes to WHY I needed to be healthy and happy on biblical terms, and have been on the down-hill slide (weight-wise that is) ever since. Yes that's right, I'm a good ol Southern CHRISTIAN to boot...who still has a cussing, eating, occasional drinking, good-timing problem that I am working on. :dizzy:

And I definitely agree that being raised in the South has made us all "special needs" dieters...there's no other place in the world with food like ours!! :D

P.S. Julia~ BBQ actually isn't TERRIBLE for you if you eat only the lean and use a good peppery/vinegary low-cal sauce. That is, as long as it isn't eaten all the time! LOL

the slim me 08-22-2005 01:11 PM

hi Everyone, I'll introduce my self too. My name is Freda. I was born in Kentucky but moved to Michigan when I got married. This is where my son and his family is, so this is where I'll stay. But like the old saying "you can take the girl from the country but you can't take the country from the girl". I have 1 son and 2 adorable grandchildren, a boy and a girl, 5and 2. I'm an RN and work in a local hospital in rehab. I babysit 2 days a week for the grandkids. I love all types of food and have gotten a little away from the southern fried "everything". But I still love it. Some said something about all the vegetables being fried. Well, not all of them, but I like my green beans cooked with a ham hock. Northern people jsut don't understand that, they want them cooked for 5 min. YUCK!

I collect depression glass and antique jewelry. I am an avid reader, especially mysteries. I solve the walking problem (boredom) by always haveing a book tape to listen too.

Looking forward to hearing about every one, Freda

Sweet Tea 08-22-2005 04:54 PM

Hi ya'll! Thank you Beth for setting this up and moving us over here. A nice place to come in , sit down , and have a spot to sip my iced tea (with splenda now of course :)) belong.

I am taking part of my info from the bio I wrote on the south beach board. I hope yall don't mind.

My name is Sara and I am a happily (most of the time happy but at this moment I want to wring his neck and make him walk a day in my shoes) married, 30 yr old SAHM mom of 3 -- ages 6, 2 1/2, and 5 months. Myself and my two best friends/soul sisters (known each other 23 years) have reached a point in our lives where we have got to "do or die" and get our health and bodies back in order. Together we are back on the SB way of life and we are hoping that with our combined efforts and the wonderful support and camaraderie we have witnessed on this awesome board that we will succeed. You all rock!!

I have been back on plan, phase 1, since last Friday and I am down 9 lbs so far. The highest weight I have ever been is 227 which was after I had my first child back in 1999. I suffered from post partum depression and Ben and Jerry were my best friends back then. Oh how I miss them . Once my depression cleared a bit I was able to eventually go down to 150. Kid #2 was then conceived and after his birth I was about 200 to 205 and only leveled back down to 190 after the PPD with him. Last summer we started SB after seeing how great my in-laws were doing. About 3 weeks in I found out about our surprise #3 and once the nausea hit I couldn't even walk near the produce isle without wanting to puke. I think I lived on Sams egg rolls for about 3 months. Just like with the past two pregnancies I developed high blood pressure and eventually preeclampsia. Combined with depression it was hard to focus on my diet but I managed to not gain weight during this pregnancy and I made it to full term. I waited to gain until after the birth . I put on 30 lbs after getting down to 180 in the first few weeks after Logan was born. Emotional eating is my main downfall. Oh and all those vicious kids snacks that call my name out in the middle of the day.

How am I going to stay personally motivated this time? Well, I have a family history of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. My father died at the age of 38 from coronary disease and it could have been prevented. His twin brother died at the age of 53. their brother at the age of 55. I want to see my kids grow up. I don't want anyone saying "Well, she could have prevented it. She could have done better." I have held on to the high blood pressure even after giving birth this 3rd time and I am scared.

On a more positive note -- I am not sure what I should say about me that would let you know more about me. Other than being a SAHM I also own a business that I run from home now. Used to own a retail location but that was just too much of a struggle after 2001. My interests are, time permitting, reading, listening to music, photography, and hanging out with my family and friends.

I love being a southerner and the southern way of life. I just have to turn a blind eye to the few negatives that may exist here. I am originally from OK but mainly grew up in South GA. I've also lived in MI, northern VA, and in Florida. I do love all other areas/countries too but I choose to be a southener.

Fav southern temptations -- sweet tea of course ( we like a little sweet tea with our sugar), fried okra, bbq in sweet sauce, fried chicken, any bread you got. I also love pizza, chinese food, mexican food....yum. I wasn't hugry earlier but now I am! the only things I really don't like are fish of any kind and grits. OK! I know grits are a southern/GA staple but I will forgive the dislike of okra or boiled peanuts If you can forgive my dislike of grits. Sorry!

Sorry about making this so long. Nice to meet you all!!!

No, I'm Sweet Tea 08-22-2005 09:31 PM

Hello ladies!

Woo hoo thank you Beth for hookin us up with this southern support group!

I'm Leanne, age 30, single - go figure! I have a fat cat named Spanky and I'm a Graphic Designer like "ejm". I was born outside of Charlotte, NC in a small town called Shelby. At age 3 my dad got transferred to Valdosta, GA which is where I grew up. I was there until the age of 18, when I moved to Savannah to attend Savannah College of Art Design. Once I graduated I decided to stay in Savannah because I just love it here. It's beautiful and artsy!

I starting growing horizontally and no longer vertically in 5th grade, when Sara (Sweet Tea) had to move to Michigan :( I think we both got fat bc we got seperated  All through middle school, high school and college I was chubby, but athletic, playing softball every step of the way. In college I lost 50 lbs twice without even trying, but gained it back both times. It was all the excercise and not wanting to eat the food at the dorm on the meal plan! Now, I have a career as a graphic designer, which I completely love, but I sit at a desk on my butt 10 hours a day and that makes losing weight harder.

Excercise you say? I plan to but for the moment I am only allowed a few excercises because I have a herniated disk in my lower back. I have been dealing with it for about 10 months now. I am getting closer to the solution as I have tried almost all conservatove treatments required but one...and that one is soon to come. Once that is taken care of I will be SO happy to walk, and walk, and do anything I can excercise wise since I think I have now learned to appreciate the gift of not having to limp like an old lady all the time!!

I have dieted till I am blue in the face, but not anymore. Last Monday, along with Sara and my sister Christa, I started Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet. I haven't weighed in yet but I haven't cheated at all and we have all been doing great. I feel great too. Everyday when I talk to Sara I say "Hey fellow lifestyle changer!" and she always laughs :D She found this forum for us and I am so happy! You ladies are great to be around and encouraging too!!

Ok I rambled some, sorry! I can talk sometimes :p So that's me in a nutshell!

I don't like grits, fried okra OR iced tea (sweet or otherwise). One of these days I'm gonna get myself thrown out of the Cracker Barrel for saying that.:D

LOL Julia -- naw, a true southerner is more than what they put down their gullet :D.

How about those boiled peanuts? Or is that maybe a Georgia thing?

JuliaTN 08-22-2005 10:11 PM

Hmmm boiled peanuts, one of those things that I don't have any strong feelings about. Sit me down in front of a bucket with nothing to do and watch 'em disappear but I wouldn't ever actually go out & buy any.;)

lucky 08-22-2005 11:33 PM

I hope it isn't too late for me to jump in here!

I was born in Arkansas but have lived in Mississippi most of my life. For all of the jokes made about us I love it here.

I am nearing my goal weight and have gotten this far by counting calories and exercising. I always get a kick out of people who see me for the first time since I've lost this much weight. They always want to know how I did it and I can see the disappointment on their faces when I tell them!

Although my diet has gotten progressively cleaner since I began losing weight I haven't given up any of my favorites. Interestingly enough, the things I used to love aren't really all that appealing to me anymore. So, if I want them I have them but I rarely want them anymore.

I am a SAHM of three kids. Our oldest son is 6 and just started the 1st grade. Our youngest two are 4 year old twins (boy/girl). They will start kindergarten next year. I am certain that my heart will break when I drop them off the first day but it will surely mend quickly when I return to a quiet house and take a shower without an audience. Please tell me, why is it that their world only falls apart when they hear the bathroom door shut?

I am glad to see a couple of familiar names and look forward to getting to know everyone better!

Tricia

Hey Tricia! Your weight loss is an inspiration for sure!

As for the kids screaming when the bathroom door shuts, I can't help you there, but I bet Sara can!! LOL ;)

gma22 08-23-2005 12:44 PM

Hello ladies, as you can see I live in Memphis, TN. I have to admit I am a transplanted YANKEE though  ! I grew up in Northwest Indiana (Notre Dame country actually) but we have lived here for 4 years now. My spouse is retired Navy so we lived in Memphis a total of 3 times. When my grandson was born and dh had a lousy job, we picked up and moved down here. Here is something about me:

I am just a shade under 52 yrs old, been married 33 years to a scrumptious adorable man who thinks this fat old body is sexy! I have two grown children, a married son, 32 and lives in Indiana and a dd who is 28 and lives here in Memphis with her dh and my 5 year old gorgeous grandson. I don't work, my husband works for the City of Memphis as an electronics engineer, retired after 20 years from the Navy in 1989 and we have lived one coast to the other in those years. Right now we are anxiously waiting for the next 48 hours to hurry by so we can go to Vegas. We planned this trip the first of the year and the last 2 weeks have been agony. It is so very hot here and my dh sure does need those 10 days we are spending in sin city! Of course, it is like 100 in Vegas but we rented a car so we can just hop in and out of it! It is our absolutely favorite place to vacation and we go every year and never get tired of it.

As for food, I am not a big lover of southern food except maybe good ole Memphis BBQ, which you can't beat anywhere. I hate okra, greens, sweet tea, and grits! I am a real fan of fried chicken, though unfortunately! I am not a "sweet tater" lover nor a fan of pecan pie. I know I should be ashamed for living here huh?????  I have relatives that live near Fort Smith, AR and we used to come down here during the summer in my high school years and I laugh at how horrified I was at some of the things they ate and how they acted and went everywhere barefoot! I had this proper mother who would have killed me for walking into a store barefoot! I hadn't been away from my own little world and didn't realize there was actually something different out there from what I was used to. So what do I do? I marry a man who grew up in Southeast NEW MEXICO for heaven's sake. You want a laugh, you should have seen my face when my new in-laws took me to a Mexican restaurant. I had never had that kind of food before (back then there were no taco bells etc around either) and didn't know what to order as I didn't know what anything was, even a taco! Again, unfortunately, I learned FAST and it is one of my favorite foods to cook or eat! I am German and sure miss that cooking. My dh doesn't like German food at all so I rarely get it unless we go to Indiana and I can hunt some sauerbraten up or some schnitzel and noodles! I also love Hungarian and Polish food as the part of the country I grew up in had a lot of middle European communities.

I have a thread that I run on the support forum and post on one other thread so I don't know if I will get in here everyday, but it is nice to see a place for all the southern belles here! It was fun talking with you and seeing about your lives here in the south!

Tricia: My grandson would come over and insist on standing in the bathroom while I peed! It is just a quirk of toddlers I guess. I truly miss my kids occasionally in the house though they have been gone for like 10 years, but I made up for it by getting myself a dog and cat. My dd laughs at us and says she knows we are old because we have a big a** car and a little dog (Grand Marquis and Yorkie  ) Cherish the moments with them as in an instant they are grown and out of your house!

Leanne: I am sure you are a gorgeous young woman! I am a huge advocate of loving yourself fat so you can love yourself thin! Look at your body and love the beauty it is now and when you get smaller you won't have to worry about if someone only loves or likes you because of your size!

Sara: Take it from a very old and very married lady, all husbands are pains in the you know what from time to time. It is second nature to them. They seem to think that when they walk out the door, time stops and only picks up when they come back in the door so you shouldn't have any whiny kid, broken dishwasher, poopy pants problems. My dh was gone so very much that he had little or not contact with my kids and it caught up with them all when they became adults. My son and dh get along great but I think there is still alot of resentment from my dd for putting her through the military life. I not only raised them practically alone, I had to deal with a car that was broken and no money to fix it, being hundreds of miles from any family and not having close friends because we were never in one place long enough Just give him a big kiss when he comes through the door and appreciate him faults and all. I almost lost the love of my live 2 years ago to a massive heart attack so I don't look at his faults the same way anymore

TTFN girls! Have a great week and maybe I can post a pic or two of Vegas when I get back!

Faye

Sweet Tea 08-23-2005 05:15 PM

Welcome Faye!! Thank you for joining us  the more the merrier. Have an awesome time in Vegas :woo: ! I am so jealous, I wanna go too!! That would be great if you were able to share some pics when you get back.

Leanne -- where's Christa???

Tricia --You get to shut your bathroom door?????? It's getting to where I can't go UNLESS I have an audience!!

Beth -- thank you so much for setting us up in here :D. What types of things do you do with your personal trainer? Sounds like you have a great exercise plan :)

Julia -- what took you to London for a year? how did you like it?

Christy-- So, do you really go bogging? :D Was there something specific said that turned things around for you? A reading, a passage, or something like that? Anything you can share about your experience?

Freda -- Hey there! What are you currently listening to while you walk? Is Milk glass a depression era glass? If so then Leanne may have some questions for you.

I hope everyone is having a great day! I am still doing pretty well but I have got to get some exercise into my plan asap. The last two days have been taken up with comforting my little fellow who is teething. Wish it weren't so painful and frustrating for the little ones. All this cuddling and soothing has made it hard to actually find time to eat which I know is bad. I did get breakfast and lunch today though :). Hopefully tomorrow will be even better.

No, I'm Sweet Tea 08-23-2005 06:36 PM

Evening ladies! Whew long day at work. I never get time to post at work *sigh*

Freda - oh yes - is milk glass from that era? I have a box full of it that was my grandparents and I need to find out about it. Any help is much appreciated!!

I was good today but pretty tired and thirsty. I made it through it fine tho! I hope eveyone else had a great day!

One more Southerner never hurt nobody. ;)

here i am~! Uhm... ok, i'm from Savannah, Ga.. sister is 'No, I'm Sweet Tea' and soul sister to 'Sweet Tea'.. i'm 32yrs. old. i was born in OH, but raised in GA.. yes, that's right :o born a yankee, raised a rebel!

moving right along.. tonight, we made dinner and experimented a little. :dizzy: it turned out really good though. :D i found a recipe and i would like to share it with you all.

Meat Crust Pizza - South Beach Diet Recipe (Phase 1)

Brown about 2 pound of extra lean ground beef.
Preheat oven to 350
Put beef in a large bowl & mix well with 2 cups of Lf mozzarella cheese. Spread mixture out like a pizza crust on a cookie sheet or a baking stone.
Put 1 cup pizza sauce on the mixture. Ragu is ok.(pizza sauce, no sugar in it) Top with 1-2 cups of Lf shredded mozzarella.
Top with canadian bacon and or low fat pepperoni (optional onions, peppers, anything legal that you like on pizza's.)
Cook 15 min. or so (when top cheese starts to brown it is done.)
Put foil on rack below to catch any drippings.

it says 15 minutes, but i think it could've cooked a little bit longer because i don't like my pizza veggies still crunchy crunchy! we also added some red onion, red bell pepper, green bell pepper, broccoli, mushrooms and i took a little pepperoni, sliced them in 4's and spread em around. i think next time, we will try this with ground turkey or chicken! :o

if anyone has any ideas what you can do with ground beef other than hamburger patties, tacos and this pizza.. let a big girl know!! LOL :D

i'm excited for thursday, because we get to see Sweet Tea and we all get to weigh, YAY~~! lol ok guys, ttys. :p

Another transplant

Hello ladies! I'm another transplant :p I live in Rock Hill, SC and work in Charlotte, NC. I see we have some others in/from/around the Queen City. I am originally from Indiana, grew up in a small town outside Indy. Went to undergrad at Purdue. I'm married to a fun and creative guy who grew up in southern Indiana (Brown County/Nashville) and we met when I was living in Bloomington, IN for a stint. I've lived in Raleigh, Charlotte (north side), Charleston SC, Orlando and Tampa FL, Florence and now RH, SC. My mom & dad retired to SC. We've all come this way bc of my older brother who went to The Citadel and then MUSC, married a southern girl and had 4 daughters. He's now a southern doctor/politician.

I got my masters in library science from Univ of SC last December and I've been working for Carolinas HealthCare System in their wonderful medical library ever since. DH is working on his Interior Design degree at Winthrop Univ in Rock Hill and we just bought our first house. We've been trying to start a family for a couple years now and been dealing with fertility issues and multiple miscarriages (one recently). It has thrown me into pits of depression where I eat and eat. I got close to goal, then with our recent loss and vacation have put some back on. I wonder if I'll ever hit goal :(

I do like southern food, esp the bbq and fried chicken. My grandma was from TN originally and I grew up on her sweet tea and fried everything. :D I LOVE Zaxby's and consider it comfort food and we use it to nurse hangovers after DH's DJ night at a club in Charlotte the first Friday of every month.

My strategy thus far for losing has been: cutting out sugary soda and moved to splenda for all beverages (including tea), counting calories and fat, staying under 1400 cal/day most days, walking for exercise and not giving up things I love entirely like chocolate and alcohol. Like I said though, I fell off the wagon recently and have to get back on track if I'm going to see goal before the end of the year.

So that's me :) Sorry to go on and on about myself. It's nice to meet ya'll (yes I've picked that one up ;) ) !

Oh yeah, I LOVE bogging!! Both in trucks and on 4-wheelers...I used to have a SWEET jeep, but had to trade it in for the family Camry...LOL.

Well, it was a sermon that really turned things around for me. In that particular sermon my pastor mentioned getting fit, and it was really motivational. He talked about how after the 40 years of wandering Joshua only had 3 days to get everybody ready before the thing that they had all been waiting for would finally come to pass (Isreal getting to their promised land)...then he outlined how WE are a Joshua generation and we have got to get ready because the things God has prepared for us are just around the corner--we need to be ready mentally, spiritually, and physically. He also mentioned a little about gluttony and threw out some facts regarding the health risks of sodas, cigarettes, etc. and how God could deliver us from all these things that we're unable to put down...it really struck a chord for me and when I went up for the alter call he was going around laying hands on different people and when he got to me something just clicked. I even almost fell out, which is something I've never done before--really interesting! Ever since then I have lost weight every week, except for last week...that's when I realized my weight loss started being more for my glory than God's and I had to get things back in order. I signed up for The Lord's Table classes and down I'm back on the downswing!

TheNewChristy 08-24-2005 09:03 AM

OK, it's official y'all...living in the South IS a "special need" that's detrimental to our waistline!! LOL As reported in AJC:

Stomachs sagging in Southland

By BOB DART
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 08/23/05
WASHINGTON — Who would have guessed, y'all? There is a statistical correlation between being fat and living in the land of fried chicken, cornbread, grits with red-eye gravy, sweet iced tea, pecan pie, porch swings and Sunday afternoon naps.

The Trust for America's Health released a report Tuesday showing that obesity is rising like a buttermilk biscuit all across America - but folks are getting fatter fastest in the South.

The report ranked states according to their percentage of obese adults: 1. Mississippi. 2. Alabama. 3. West Virginia. 4. Louisiana. 5. Tennessee. 6. A tie between Texas, Kentucky and Michigan. South Carolina was tenth, Arkansas 11th, Georgia 12th, North Carolina 16th, and Virginia 22nd. Of the Southern states, only Florida was in the leaner half of the nation - ranking 38th.

The states that once composed the Confederacy now make up a Corpulency. The region "is almost like a canary in a coal mine. Waistlines are growing fastest (in the South). But why is it happening there? I can't give you that answer," said Shelley Hearne, executive director of Trust for America's Health, a non-partisan, non-profit organization with the stated goal of improving the health of Americans.

The report, "F as in Fat: How Obesity Policies Are Failing in America - 2005," uses statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta to show state-by-state trends. Along with the nation as a whole, each state's average percentage of obese adults from 2002-2004 is compared to the average over the previous three years.

By comparing three-year periods, Hearne said, the study shows "with clarity and certainty that we have a steady increase that has been taking place."

Nationwide, the average obesity rate for the three-year period was 22.7 percent of the adult populace, up slightly from 22 percent in the previous period. No state met the national goal of 15 percent or lower, said Hearne. Every state showed an increase in its obese population except Oregon, which stayed the same.

The percentage of obese adults in Georgia was 24.5, a .7 percentage point increase. The percentage of obese adults in Texas was 25.3, a .4 percentage point increase. The percentage of obese adults in Florida was 20.7, up 1.4 percentage points. The percentage of obese adults in Ohio was 24.4, a 1 percentage point increase. The percentage of obese adults in North Carolina was 23.9, a .4 percentage point increase.

"We really don't have the research" to show conclusively why the Southerners seem to be the fattest Americans, said the report's co-author, Parris Glendening, president of the Smart Growth Leadership Institute and former two-term governor of Maryland.

"But this part of the country is leading the nation in the increase in obesity and is going to suffer dramatically in its health as a result," he concluded.

The issue is both simple and complex, the report's co-authors said.

On one hand, the rise in obesity comes from "simple math," said Hearne. "We're eating more calories and we're burning up less" through exercise.

On the other hand, she explained, "obesity is a very complex issue."

People with lower education levels and less income are more likely to be fat, for instance. "You can match that up with demographics of states," she said. People who are on food stamps are more likely to be obese than those with higher incomes or those with similar incomes who do not rely on food stamps.

"Where you find obesity, you'll find poverty. It's a reflection of the South's struggle to raise its standard of living. You'll see it in the deep South and in Appalachia," said Bill Ferris, former administrator of the National Endowment for the Humanities and now a scholar with the Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

"Traditional Southern food is very high calorically," said Harry Watson, director of the UNC Center. "It was appropriate when Southerners worked outdoors in fields and indoors in mills. But jobs are not as strenuous now. People are more sedentary but they still eat like they're out there sawing logs or picking cotton."

But he agreed that "cheap food is fattening food" and income levels may have as much to do with the region's obesity as does its traditional diet.

"There are more people eating French fries than greens" in today's South, he said.

Glendening linked the obesity rate to the region's rapid suburban growth.

The South "has the highest level of sprawl," he said. Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Charlotte, Birmingham, Jackson and other of the region's metropolitan areas are growing outward. Cars rule. Pedestrians are figments of the past.

Developers "build cul-de-sac type subdivisions. People can't walk to school, work or church. You have to get in the car and drive to go anywhere," said Glendening. "As a result, there is a reduction in physical activity."

Many suburbs are built without sidewalks, he said. There are no neighborhood stores in these communities and schools are usually distant.

"Nationwide only about 10 percent of children walk to school any more," he said.

Fat is dangerous, the report said.

"Obesity is a gateway to heart disease, diabetes and a host of other diseases," said Glendening. "There is much more that can be done to help people make healthy choices about nutrition and exercise. For instance, decisions about where we build new houses and highways or schools and sidewalks can mean the difference between giving people more or less opportunity to participate in physical activity."

Hearne said governments could do more to fight obesity in everyone from school kids to Medicare patients.

The report defines adults with a Body Mass Index of 30 or more as "obese." The index is meant to be a more accurate measure than a simple weight to height ratio, but is sometimes flawed when considering very muscular, fit people.

To respond to 2 posts at once: That's what I loved, loved, loved about London. I think I only got in a car twice in the 9 (winter) months I was there. I walked a lot of places and then took the tube or a bus others but there was still a walk from the station to where I was going. I have seriously thought about moving to downtown Chatt into one of the loft/condos they're putting in just so that I could walk out my front door and go somewhere without getting in a car. I'm lucky now in that I live in a really old (read dilapidated) area of town where there are still sidewalks and people do actually walk down them (unfortunately they're mostly crackheads:^: ), but I would really like to live somewhere that I could walk to get my groceries etc. London caters to that type of thing. There's a little market on just about every major street corner that has things other than chips and candy so you can just pop in on your way home from work and pick up some fresh stuff to make for dinner. That's the real reason that people in major metropolitan areas (NY, London, Paris) are skinny - they're either eating in overpriced chi chi little bitty portion restaurants or they're only buying as many groceries as they can carry home at once.

I had a friend-who is just now learning to drive at 30-visit from London and woke her up to see if she wanted to go with me to breakfast. She said no that she would just walk out and get something later. I had to remind her that there wasn't going to be any walking out to get anything to eat unless she wanted to brave life and limb walking down a freeway (I lived somewhere else at the time). She couldn't believe that anybody could live that way. She also made the comment that Europeans are always talking about how fat Americans are but that if the food was as good in the UK as what she ate here everybody there would be fat too.;)

To answer the question about why I went to London: it was really just a whim. I got a work visa through my school and just went with about $500 in my pocket and ate toast morning noon and night to be able to afford to live on my really tiny salary at the job that I found after I got there. I was either really brave or really foolish, I'm still not sure which. I definitely got bitten by the travel bug though - I've since been to every continent except Australia & Antarctica (and I may get over to Antarctica this January).

Julia -- all that traveling is awesome!! Even though I'm primarily a homebody, shich I am sure contributes to my weight, but I do love to visit new places. It's such an adventure:D

Christy -- Thank you so much for posting the article! Very interesting. I do agree that some, not all, of the problem lies in economics, urban sprawl, and in how our culture cooks. Can I throw this thought out there about exercise -- I think that the HEAT contributes to a lot of us in the South not getting outside to exercise too. Ya think?? Very interesting article indeed. Also -- thank you for sharing your experience at church :D. I am not a church goer persay but I do have my time with the man upstairs and I consider myself spiritual in a way. It was a talk with Him 2 weeks ago that turned my light bulb on and got me on this path to getting my body and life under control.

Welcome Kerry!!! Glad to see you here :D. I am so sorry to hear about your losses but I hope that you haven't given up. :(
Is that your dog in your avatar? Too cute! It sounds like you have a good paln going and from your ticker I see that you have come a long way! Very Cool!!

Hope today is a good day for everyone! So far things are going smoothly here today. I'm going to get my laundry started in a few minutes while the baby is asleep and I'll maybe do some cleaning (Yikes!!). I have not lost anything in the last few days but I have not gained at all. I've increased my water intake today as I was backsliding yesterday. Little Logan is haveing such a hard time teething that it was hard to get anything done on monday and tuesday.

Dinner tonight -- what ya'll havin??

Here I think I'll do night #3 with the chicken pouches that Leanne told me about on Sunday. Tonight is chicken with okra for me and broccoli for dh. Put oven at 350 and on a piece of foil put your meat- drizzled with olive oil or seasoning-- and then your veggies on top and then make it into a pouch and bake for 30 to 45 minutes (depends on your meat). we've been having this with salad. Yummy -- thank you Leanne and Christa!!

the slim me 08-24-2005 02:30 PM

Good afternon, lovely ladies. I have been missing in action for a few days because I had to work and them my grandson (5) insisted on spending the night and when he's here forget about using the computer, or anything else besides play.

I have enjoyed reading all the bio's and getting to know every one.

Leanne, Yes milk glass is depression glass. You're lucky you had some passed down to you, i've had to buy all mine! There are so many different kinds and colors and I think it's all beautiful. I mostly collect the pink and green glass but I do have a few pieces of milk glass. I use it too, not just for show.

It's a perfect day here, the sun is shining and there is a light breeze! I haven't had a chance to exercise yet since I just took my grandson home, but i'll go for a walk this evening. With my book tape, of course. right now i'm listening to James patterson's 4th of july. But I went to the library and got Janet Evanovitch's new one "Eleven on top". Love her books too! So i've got a lot of walking to do. And they do help because I only listen to lthem while I walk. Sometimes I will walk an extra mile because i dodn't want to stop listening!

I can surely relate to the bathroom thing! When the kids are over I never go to the bathroom without one of them knocking on the door "mema, are you in there?"

Nice talking to Y'all, have a good day! Freda

HI! I'd love to join the Southern Bandwagon!

I am new to this site and thought this would be a great place to start.

My name is Melissa, I'm 27. I have been married to my DH, Chris, for a little more then 9 years. I have three wonderful sons, Neal (7), Jacob (3), and Zachary (2)....and my little girl, Petunia (a 3 month old English Bulldog).

I have always battled my weight, and some how it alwasy seems to win. I was never considered "fat" by my friends, yet I could never share thier clothes. :( It was tough growing up like that. In high school I was my smallest at 160lbs and that, on my frame, is perfect to me. I want to return to that but have never been motivated and ready. I'm ready now. Ready to finally be healthy rather then just thin. And my motivation is boobs and a tummy tuck. :o I have set my goal at 175, giving my self a realistic goal after birthing three big ole baby boys.

I'm down 11lbs from where I started and very goal oriented. I have changed my eating habits, as well as portion sizes. I have also returned to the gym. I have also just started to try something I read about in Woman's World, drinking a glass of metamucil 15 minutes before my meals to help fill me up and to bind with my food so that my body won't absorb as much of the bad stuff.

I work in the book industry, doing sales support and trade shows for a remainer/overstock distributor. I love to dance, shop, and entertain.

BTW, I LOVE boiled peanuts and have many times convinced my DH to take a Sunday drive just to find them. Grits I can live without, and sweet tea I can give or take....but I have to have my cokes. But to my defense, I have successfully converted over to diet and haven't looked back.

No, I'm Sweet Tea 08-24-2005 11:11 PM

Welcome Melissa!
Umm hmmm I lurvee those boiled peanuts too! My dad use to bring me home a small bag every friday from work. Some little old man use to come by his work and sell them. I haven't had them in awhile now. I *am* really starting to miss that sweet tea 10 days into Phase 1! Maybe I can convince Sara to make some with Splenda for when me and sis ride over there tomorrow night for our monthly family dinner! :crossed:

Freda - thanks for letting me know about the milk glass. I am actually looking to sell all of it, but not sure how to go about finding the value of any of it. Any suggestions?

Sara - your welcome about the foil packets! What I love best about those is that there is virtually NO clean up! That is great!! LOL

Well ladies, I had a good day. Work was nothing short of chaos this morning but that's a print deadline for ya when the power goes out!! Makes for a fun day :dizzy: LOL! Following the lifestyle change well and calling Sara everyday to make sure she is feeling good too. Looking forward to our together dinner tomorrow and getting to spend some time together! :beach:

the slim me 08-25-2005 08:21 AM

Good morning every one, It's a lovely, cool day here! I'm actally looking forward to getting out and walking this morning! I may even need long sleves!

ny3suns; I have never heard of the metamucil thing, but i'm going to try it! It sure can't hurt and may actually help. More fiber is always good!

No, I'm sweet tea: There are books you can get at the library that will give you the value. If your local library doesn't have them they will get them for you. You might also try e-bay.
there are so many different types, hobnail, grape....What kind of pattern do you have?

Sarah, Thanks for the recie. Quich, easy, tasty, no cleanup. It's a win, win!

Take care, have a great day, Freda

my3suns 08-25-2005 08:48 AM

OK I found the Metamucil article in the March 15, 2005 edition of Woman's World. Here are the key points it hit on:

Low-cal dieters who used fiber supplements lost 83% more weight then those who consumed the same calories but didn't not take the supplement.

Those who took a fiber supplement 30 minutes before a meal at 25% less. Why? Once swallowed fiber instantly begins expanding to four times it's original size. triggering the release of a "stop eating" hormone called CCK.

Fiber slows digestion of carbs, preventing sudden changes in blood sugar that can cause hunger to return too quickly.

Fiber speeds the passage of food through your digestive track allowing less time for calories to be absorbed.

Fiber stabalizes blood sugar reducing cravings.

As stored fat is burned it releases trapped toxins that can overlaod the liver causing weightloss to stall. Fiber binds to the toxins and carries them out of the body.

The article recommends Metamucil, but says you could use Benefiber or Citrucel. It also says that powder supplements go to work more quickly then capsules.

How does everybody do that??? I still allow myself 1-2/day. I know that if I didn't I'd just start right back up as soon as I got down to where I want to be so what's the use in that. I haven't switched to diet. I'm saving that as a last resort.:dizzy:

My name is Julia and I am a coke-aholic:o

my3suns 08-25-2005 10:34 AM

I have to have the caffine or I get killer headaches (can you say addicted?) But I sacrificed fully loaded for diet. And now I only drink one or two a day - diet - as opposed to five or six a day - regular - that's how I lost my first 5 lbs, lol.

Loud_Librarian 08-25-2005 10:58 AM

Oh I had a lot of trouble giving up the Coke too. I think that regular Coke was at least half my problem in gaining weight. I drank about 5-7 a day. :o I read "Fat World" and learned about high-fructose corn syrup and was so appalled that I started weaning myself right then. I first moved to C2, which made it easier and only had 2/day. Then they came out with the diet Coke with Splenda and I switched to that. Now I have about 2 of those a day at the most and I'm happy :) Now I won't lie and say that I don't have a regular Coke once in awhile or a sip from DH, but only a total of about 1-2 per week now. MUCH better and I attribute this major change to a lot of the weight loss and maintenance.

Thank God for Splenda as I HATE aspertame.

Loud_Librarian 08-25-2005 11:01 AM

Oh yeah and. . .

<----- this is my big baby girl: Bella. She's a sweetie and went on a weight loss program with me. She's dropped about 8 lbs and has met her goal at just under 100 lbs at 99. :D

my3suns 08-25-2005 11:25 AM

We have a 3 year old female Rottie named Kat (short for Katstrophic) and a 3 year old female Chocolate Lab.........but they are DH's.

lucky 08-25-2005 11:34 AM

I've been drinking Diet Coke. I didn't have much trouble converting. I was actually given a regular Coke by mistake the other day and I swear it was like drinking sugar water. MMMMM, sugar water. For as yucky as it seemed it still took every once of will power I had to go back and get diet instead. I mean, WHAT is in that stuff that makes it so darn hard to give up?

Yep, Mississippi is fat alright. Those studies used to really frustrate me. First of all, at 214 pounds I only saw skinny people. We'd be ranked number 1 and I'd be looking around thinking where are all the other fat people? I figured they had to be somewhere because I didn't take the survey but I honestly felt like I was the only obese person in the state. Then, I'd feel bad for being a part of the problem. I hated being reduced to a statistic. Now that I'm at a healthier weight I'm not quite so bothered by the results. I don't fear telling someone I'm from Mississippi and worry that they'll be thinking, so SHE'S they are at the top of the list.

As for the fiber study, it has proven to be true for me. A couple of months ago I began using a couple of tablespoons of Benefiber each day. I'll stir it into my coffe, cereal or oatmeal. I can really tell a difference. I don't think it is making me lose weight and I don't buy the toxins theory but I'm not nearly as bloated (a feeling I didn't even know I had until I wasn't anymore. LOL). And it does make a difference in how full I feel and for how long a meal sticks with me. I know that actual food is a better source of fiber but I find it difficult to get all that I need and stay within my calorie range so a supplement is my best bet until I reach my goal. At that point I think I'll be able to add a hundred or so more calories and get all the fiber I need from what I eat.

I've been away from the gym for a couple of days thanks to a sore throat, cough, etc. but I think by this afternoon I'll be able to at least manage a short workout. I'm always surprised by how much I miss exercise when it isn't part of my day. The weights are what I really, really hate to do without. I can tell such a difference so fast if I skip those. Anyway, it will be good to get back down to business. I'm also going to try and manage 1200-1300 calories for the next few days. I've done pretty well foodwise but I think I need to kick start myself again and really pay attention. I don't have to pay much attention at a 1500-1600 calorie level so an occasional reduction of calories helps me keep my focus.

Hope you are all having a great week. Everybody keep up the good work!

Tricia

the slim me 08-25-2005 12:10 PM

Hi again, I got my exercise in for the day! I went walking this morning and then went to garage sales and walked blocks again! I just have to lift my weights now and I'll be set. I'm working on drinking my water too, but so far it's coffee mostly! I get headaches if I don't get caffeene too! Migraines that make me end up in bed! Or emergency! Yeah, I am truely addicted! I have cut down drastically though, and without the headaches. I switched to Lite Coffee, which is half decafe. Every little bit helps.

I know ther are a lot of dog lovers here. My niece called me from Virginia to tell me that her dog (a little Shih Tzu) had an eye infection and she had to take him to the vet. The vet told her that the groomer (2 days earler) had poked him in the eye with the grooming scissors! He has to have surgery now and may still loose the sight in that eye! I would be ready to do great bodilly harm! She is reluctant to say anything to the groomer!!! The very least the groomer could do is pay the bill! Our dog is our little baby and to think of someone hurting him just makes me see red!

my3suns 08-25-2005 12:49 PM

OUCH! Poor little furbaby!

Sweet Tea 08-25-2005 01:06 PM

Howdy Melissa!! Thank you for the info on the Metamucil/fiber before meals :). I'm gonna give that a try. If anything, the extra fiber will do me some good and it's recommended on the south beach WOE anyway.

Ya'll are making me want a soda this morning!! :coffee2: I'll jut make due with my coffee though. I shoulda got a diet Dr. Pepper while I was at walmart. Shucks!! :) For some reason I just can't bring myself to dring diet coke. it has a funny aftertaste to me and I would much rather have the the real thing. Last time I did have a regular cok though it made my teeth feel funny. Weird...

Oh My, Slim Me -- poor little doggie. I agree that the groomer should be told about what his slip up has caused
:(.

Tricia -- you made me LOL at the Mississippi thoughts! when I read about the weight problems in GA I had a similar reaction. then I went ot Walmart and saw where all us bigguns were hiding. Oh My!

Today I'm cleaning house a bit and getting ready for Leanne and Christa to come over this evening for dinner (No, I'm sweet tea and fatchck). Laundry is also calling my name. It's a bit cooler here today so I'm hoping to get outside this afternoon with the kids after ulia gets home from school. I can't wait until fall gets here though so that we can spend a lot more time outside.

I'm down another 1/2 lb today. YAY! My goal for the rest of the week and weekend is to get under the 200 lb mark. I am finishing up week two on phase 1 of south beach. I think I'' be taking a look at the phase 2 updated list later today to see what would be smart things to add in. I think the only thing that I miss so far are the low carb/whole wheat tortilla wraps.

Anyway -- hope you all are having a good afternoon. I'll be back around this way later!

my3suns 08-25-2005 03:51 PM

We started using our break time wisely this afternoon. We're going to walk the warehouse once on our morning break and once on our afternoon break. Not sure how far it is, we'll know tomorrow, but it takes 15 minutes. The girls were whining, but then when we got back I said "now wasn't that better then just sitting here drinking soda and snacking?" and they all agreed it was. So now we'll do it twice a day!

healthytoad 08-25-2005 06:11 PM

So great to see everyone! Don't laugh, but I haven't been posting because my husband has been working from home for a couple of days, and I don't want him to see the little bar at the bottom of my posts! lol The man knows what I look like.. but I don't want him to know the actual number :P I've only been married to him for 5 years, I don't think I know him well enough to tell him my weight LOL just all you guys on the internet :P

oops...gotta run, will hopefully chat tomorrow!

ejm - you truly made me laugh with that - but only because thats kinda cute..LOL! Welcome back and don't stay away too long anymore!

Freda - I actually haven't looked at the glass in about a year. I will open up that box and try to see what pattern it is to let you know, ok. I will get into it this weekend. Thanks for your help!

About that Metamucil...I talked to Sara tonight and my sis and I are going to get some and try that. I think it will help and I need all the help I can get!

Tonight my sis and I went over to Sara's for dinner. Our friends Chris and Aaron also met us over there. We call this our "monthly family dinner". I don't have a scale at home, so I wait until I go over to Sara's to weigh myself. Well..I haven't weighed since last wed or so I think it was. I have now lost a total of 10 lbs! Now I feel like I am getting somewhere!! YAY!!

We had a great dinner tonight and it was alot of fun. Sara had found a recipe for meatballs for Phase 1 and we had that with salad. The men at the house had pasta with theirs :?: but that's ok, we did just fine without it! It was sooo very good and I have a feeling Sara will be posting about it soon as well.

This weekend I hope to get some walking in, even if it is just going around Target. I have been trying to do this a few times a night but I have to have the buggy to help me until I get this herniated disk situation worked out. Atleast I am trying and getting some walking done tho and I feel good about that!

Enjoy your evenings ladies!
:cp:

the slim me 08-26-2005 08:25 AM

Good morning to you all, It looks like rain this morning and I hope we do get some. It's dry and we need it bad. I'll be cooped up in the house, but I'll find something to do.

My3suns, Good for you for making the most ofl your time at work and walking. I try to walk around the building when I work (when I actually get a break) and I climb the stairs, all 7 floors. Every little bit helps, right. And if you walk around twice and it's 15 min. each, you've got your 30 min in!

EJM, I don't know if my husband of (almost 40, our anniversary is the 31's of this month) knows how much I weigh. I wouldn't care, but I doubt that he does either. He likes women with "a little meat on the bone". So I get no encouragement when I'm on a diet.

Leanne, You lost 10 lib.? That is so great! You must be feeling pretty good by now. That is a major accomplishment. And I know you've made some healthy changes. I have a bad back too, I think I mentioned that before. I just have bulging discs. It's enough to give me major back pain almost all the time. Are the Dr's thinking surgery? Even if they do, looseing weight will make every thing go better.

Sweet Tea, Your dinner sounds like a winner. How wonderful to have family and friends to go through this with.

Everyone have a good day, Freda

my3suns 08-26-2005 08:34 AM

That regular family dinner sounds great. I love stuff like that!

ejm, it makes me blush to let DH see my weight too.

Leanne, 10 lbs!!! You rock girl! Keep up the good work!

As for me, I'm feeling super motivated. Took the babies on a bike ride last night for about 45 minutes around the subdivision and to the park, then took about 10 minutes to get back home, so almost an hour! They loved it and I felt sooooooo good! That good ole muscle burn it's been too long since I last felt!

On the Metamucil, I have found that if I take it about 30 minutes before eating and drink a glass of water during that 30 minutes, it REALLY makes me a lot less hungry!
