Shad 03-19-2011 12:04 AM

Morning all,
Or rather afternoon. The day is getting away from me. I haven't even really started to sort the house yet. Don't have a huge amount to do but it all takes time and effort when the motivation goes away.

Mel - It would seem that you are at present 14 hours behind us. So 4pm on Saturday your time = 6.00am my time. Any time around or after that is just fine. I will make a trip to the garden centre at some stage tomorrow but it doesn't open until 9.00am. I guess we will be finished by then?

It's pouring down today. Good for the garden. But not good to ripen the tomatoes and I have to keep picking them at the slightly green stage to ensure the bugs don't get all of my fruit. As it is, the grasshoppers and the snails have managed to do a number on my red lettuces. The green ones are doing okay - maybe the buggies are colour prejudgiced - sp??

Michelle - good that you got a good sleep - it does wonders for the soul. Good also for the 1400 calorie day. It's a bore to count continuously but it works. The only other way to count them is to set up all your food for the day and count the calories once. Then you know how much you have to eat for the day. But you also have to be strict because you CAN'T have anything else.

Laura - hope you enjoy your long weekends coming up. Good going on the exercise as well. Maybe I need another dog to take on walks.

Ceejay - you sounded like my mother - don't feel talkative today, I have nothing to say so I will say nothing!

Annie - boob squish ewwwww. Hope you are okay after that. Hope you enjoy the brothers band and the company of the kids.

Happy - I haven't spoken to RedBalloon for a couple of days. She has been on line occasionally but with the blackouts and the shortages in Tokyo, she may be having difficulty getting on. As well as that she was not too well and was stressing out about money. So I'll catch up with her when I can.
I also meant to mention on here (I may have done so but can't remember) that Daichi has heard from his folks in Hokkaido and Chris has heard from Rinko and Tadahishi in Sendai. All is well. My friend Mika's family is in Gifu prefecture, well down the island and are just fine - experiencing shortages and blackouts but just fine.

Nuclear power is a powerful servant, but a very bad master. It appears to have turned on Japan in a big way.

Okay - better go get on with whatever. Maybe nothing but time to get off here.

Shad 03-19-2011 01:06 AM

Reply to an e-mail I sent to Red Balloon

hi there. was at work (a bit of parttime stuff at the newspaper) just went out for a break and stopped in the apple store in ginza, where i am presently typing on the new MacBook Air!!

I'm OK. Tremors have subsided considerably.
Just hoping the radiation levels stay down.
Trying to keep working and find more work.
Who knows, maybe this will be the jolt (pun applicable!!) I needed to get a move on things.

Thanks for asking!!

Best wishes,

Barbara

upswife 03-19-2011 09:56 AM

just a short note. I am still here, just been very tired and blah feeling. will try to get on and catch up one of these days.

happy2bme 03-19-2011 10:36 AM

Good morning ladies,

I will try and post but DH is watching some videos online doing some research and it's really hard to try and focus here on what he's doing there. So...

Today is a shopping day. We need to go look at big tractor lawnmowers. DH is hoping to see the one he is interested in rather than looking online. We also have to replace our sleep number bed. DH wants the ones that fold at the head and feet like hospital beds. Cripes those are $6,000. I think NOT. I tried one and actually thought it was uncomfortable. I checked my appointment for my hair and sure enough, it was when we will be out of town closing on the new house. It's very hard to get an appointment with my hairdresser but they said she had an opening for a base color only today late in the afternoon. My roots are starting to show, I certainly could not wait until my next appointment in June. So I'll go there today just for a touch up. No big deal as I want to let my hair grow out a bit anyway. And tomorrow I have to spend some time packing up things to take to the house. So it will be a busy weekend. We did want to go to the Botanic Gardens. It is going to be a lovely weekend temperature wise and the cherry blossoms are in bloom as well as the red buds (my favorite) and the daffodils. Should make for some pretty pics but I forgot we had to do some shopping today so I don't see how we can possibly squeeze that in - the weekends go too fast already.

Mel - it's interesting what you say about the seniors reaction to Japan. I was talking to my sister yesterday and she said my Mom was giving her an earful about the same thing. She just will not let go what happened in the war and has made a generalization that she will NOT give up. Given the fact that she gets more cantankerous and stubborn as each year goes by all you can do is let her rant and turn a deaf ear. I feel sorry for you having a building full of them. Yay for the bookkeeping contractor sticking up for you. No way could you have suffered through such a long day. Hope things stay quiet for you. I am very sorry about your loss of income  Hopefully something will come to replace it. Keep the faith.

Shad - thank you for the update on Redballoon. So much suffering going on over there and the scare of the radiation. You know the goverment is keeping things under wraps because they do not want to cause wide spread panic. I can't imagine how difficult it must be for those poor people in shelters in winter cold with no heat! I saw that the U.S. dropped of a batch of powdered milk and I thought - DUH! isn't there a water shortage right now. So what good does powdered milk do? Would be better off dropping the miltary meals ready to eat tins but then again that would really be foreign food to those folks and would probably make them even sicker. I cannnot imagine such destruction - it's horrific looking at the destruction of the tsunami. Imagine your life racing by in a flood of water. Will take alot of effort to rebuild but I also am amazed as are many at the quiet spirit of the people. Unlike what you'd see here in the U.S. there are no riots, theft, stealing and pillaging and sitting and waiting for someone to rescue them. Instead they set to the tasks at hand and make due even when they are not getting the supplies they desperately need.

Glad to hear Shad that your friends and acquaintances have all been able to get in contact with their loved ones. That must be a very big worry not knowing the fate of people.

Ceejay - I don't wear shorts either. At least not in public. And I think we have the most destructive squirrels down here. They are more polite up north  Spring is in full swing down here :yay: Nice weather and sneezy noses

Laura - enjoy your long weekend. Sounds like some fun stuff planned.

Annie - have fun at your brother's band gig with the kids.

Michelle - it's amazing what a good sleep can do. Good going on sticking with the calorie counts. I'm sure you will find your groove. Thanks for the tip on Fitness Pal.

Ellen - sometimes we all have nothing to say because life is just... routine. That's ok. Just go in browse mode.

Ok, gotta run. DH wants to know when I'll be ready and you know how that can get. Actually he's right. If we don't get out of here soon I won't have enough time to get to my hair appointment. Have a good weekend kids.

Laura705 03-19-2011 11:01 AM

Morning all. Just a quick hello while my dye is setting!

ceejay52 03-19-2011 12:01 PM

Morning
I had an overnight guest. Not really sure why my neighbor wanted to spend the night. It was no trouble. Put her on the couch. I didn't want to put down the futon. She said she had a headache and her son wasn't home. I'm thinking she may not like to be by herself. I did take her blood pressure which was 158/85, mine was 149/91 Gave her some tylenol for her headache,
She was okay this morning.

It was cold this morning when she left to go back home. Guess Mother Nature is taking full advantage of the last day of winter. Ah, tomorrow is the first day of Spring.

My outing today will be going to Sears and Walmart in Blytheville. I've got one more payment on the washer/dryer. I've been paying that on line but this last time it would not let me.

Mel
The NP wants to check my sinuses to see why I keep getting infections. My primary care doctor say's its the middle turbinate that keeps getting infected. We shall see. Who's fillling in for you today at the office?

Happy
I was curious about those sleep number beds that looked like hospital beds.
That's a lot of money. Have fun shopping today.

Shad,
Have you ever grown tomato's inside. I'm thinking I might try that this year.
At least the squirrel's would eat them.

Ellen
hope you are feeling better.

Hello to the rest.

Shad 03-19-2011 08:01 PM

Morning all,
Having set the world to rights with Mel earlier in the day, I had better report back that you can all go outside and about your daily activities with out fear that the sky is falling in.

Mel - good as always to talk to you. Hope you have fun with the toy in the next couple of weeks. Which is mainly why we were talking on the phone today. I am going to ask my IT man (Robbie) and my IT son (DS2) about the computer in the wheelchair overiding the wireless keyboard. Personally I think it is bunkum, but I can stand corrected. I can be wrong.
I guess I can let the cat out of the bag here. Mel has a new computer - she hasn't got it set up yet, and is waiting for the man (aren't we all) to come and hook up the internet. Good for you Mel. Hope that this one can spell better than the old one. I'm sure she will tell you all about it when she doesn't have to wait 10 minutes for the page to load.
Miracles abound but sometimes you just have to look in unsuspected places.

Happy - Saw about the new toy on Facebook this morning. I'm jealous, but then the amount of grass I have is decreasing daily so it would be wasted here. 6K for a bed?! :faint: I think I might stick with my mattress on the floor for a while yet.
Have you figured out about the cooking classes yet? Maybe you said, I don't remember. I seem to have been a bit out of touch over the past months with this wedding and all.

Mel & Happy - I can sort of understand the senior population going on about how Japan is getting what it deserves - or so they think. It was a long time ago and they certainly got paid back for Pearl Harbour with the bombs dropped over Nagasaki and Hiroshima. I've not been to Nagasaki, but I have been to Hiroshima and to the Peace Park there and the memorial museum. It wasn't pretty and we did that to them. I was lucky enough to talk face to face with one of the survivors of Hiroshima even tho' he was over 80 at the time. Believe me, I felt so guilty over the deprivation and suffering and yet he held no malice. Believed it had to be done to end the war.
Now the Japanese are about to be inflicted with another dose of radiation sickness and I feel so sorry for them.

Laura - hope the dye job worked quickly and you look beautiful again. I guess it must be time for another hairdressing appointment for me. I have no talent to be able to do it for myself.

Ceejay - never grown tomatoes inside. For one I don't have enough room. They can get quite big. At least three of my plants out there are as tall as I am. Also, how do the flowers get pollinated? Do I have to pretend to be a bee? I can however see how it would get rid of the worst of the bugs.

Okay - so I was going to go to the shops this morning for some more plants and some pots for repotting the orchids but it is raining so I won't be working outside I don't think and I need to think about turning over the soil and building it up before planting. I also need to get the rose garden dug over and fertilised, so maybe next week....... Instead I will work on the spider webs and dust bunnies in behind and under the furniture and maybe look at planning out what I might need for re-insulating the ceiling. I'll only be doing it a little at a time as it gets so hot up there - however that might help with the weight problem I guess. All that sweat.
So until tomorrow.

ceejay52 03-20-2011 09:08 AM

Enjoyed my trip to Blytheville and got my errands ran.
Afterwards I went out to the mighty Mississippi river which is overflowing it's banks at the present. Also got to see a barge.

Shad
Glad you and Mel get to talk once in a while. I thought about you this morning while I was watching the news. Prince William and Kate were in Brisbane.
I, too, am sadden by the fact that Japan is having to endure the after effects of the earthquake, especially the radiation.

Mel
So you have a new toy. Hope you get it up and running soon. Did you get a laptop?

Have a good day

YES..... UP LATE LAST NIGHT PLAYING WITH A NEW TOY. TWO DEAR FRIENDS OF MINE BOUGHT ME A NEW DELL COMPUTER. IT'S SO CUTE SITTING THERE ALL BRANDY NEW AND SHINY. THIS HAS BEEN A BIRTHDAY I WILL NEVER FORGET. :hb: AFTER I GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH SHAD, I DECIDED TO GET IT OUT OF THE BOXES AND LET IT BREATHE!!:lol3: THEN I SAW HOW EASY IT WAS TO SET UP EVEN WITHOUT THE INTERNET (I forgot I could do that....roflmao till Shad reminded me)
SO NOW IT SITS ON THE TABLE NEXT TO ME UNTIL THE CABLE GUY COMES. I WAS SICKISH LAST WEEK AND HAD CANCELED THE APPT. MY BATHROOM HAS NO DORR ON IT AND I AM SURE IT WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN A VERY PRETTY SIGHT FOR HIM TO WITNESS!:faint:
I HAVE BEEN SO EXCITED I CAN HARDLY SLEEP OR CONCENTRATE. SOON PAGES WILL BE LOADING AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT!!! NO MORE TIMING OUT ON GOVT & BANK WEBSITES!! THIS POOR OLD THING HAS BEEN LOSING IT'S "MEMORY" AND SLOWLY FORGETTING HOW TO DO STUFF....MUCH LIKE ME! I AM SURE ANGEL (the office tech) WILL BE THRILLED. HE DIDN'T WANT TO REBUILD THIS ONE. TOLD ME IT WAS TOO COSTLY & NO GUARANTEES. IT WAS RIGHT AFTER THAT WHEN I CAME OUT OF THE LAUNDRY ROOM AND I RAN INTO THE FED EX MAN. HE ASKED IF I WAS MELODY. THERE SAT 2 BOXES WITH DELL PRINTED ON THEM :cb: :carrot: :broc:
I AM THINKING I WILL BE ON CLOUD NINE FOR QUITE AWHILE:cloud9: I AM ALSO STILL VERY SPEECHLESS AND THANKFUL:hug:
I NEED TO GET SOME BREAKFAST & MOVE ABOUT BEFORE I CRAWL BACK INTO BED!!!
HOPE EVERYONE IS HAVING A GREAT WEEKEND:moped:

HAPPY....THE SENIORS WENT ON A RASNT CAUSE THEY HEARD ME TOLL A FRIEND THAT JEN & I HAD DONATED MONEY TO THE RED CROSS....WELLLLLLL.....THAT ABOUT KILLED THEM AND OFF THEY WENT WITH THEIR MOUTHS!  BUT PART OF ME CAN UNDERSTAND CAUSE WHEN WE WITNESSED THE DESTRUCTION OF PEOPLE'S LIVES ON 9/11, I WAS READY TO DROP THE BOMB OVER THERE!! GUT REACTION. HOPE YOU ARE GETTING YOUR STUFF DONE THIS WEEKEND AND YOU MUST BE SO EXCITED GETTING READY TO SIGN THE PAPERS!! I'D BE SCREAMING FROM THE RAFTERS!!
TRUST ME...I AM KEEPING THE FAITH MONEY WISE. GOOD THINGS HAPPEN TO THOSE WHO WAIT PATIENTLY. :yoga:
RIGHT AFTER I GOT THAT NEWS OF THE CHECKS....THE IRS IS TELLING ME I MIGHT BE ENTITLED TO $500 OR MORE THIS YEAR DUE TO AN ERROR ON THEIR PART. DON'T BE FALLING THRU!!!:rollpin: BTW...I TOLD THE SENIORS MUCH OF WHAT YOU SAID ABOUT THE WAR ETC. SAD ISN'T IT THAT PEOPLE CAN HOLD ON TO SUCH A GRUDGE AND NOT SEE THE OTHER SIDE OF IT AT ALL. TWO COUNTRIES DEVASTATED FOR MANY YEARS. I THOUGHT THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO BE THE WARS THAT ENDED ALL WARS??? HOW QUICKLY THE WORLD FORGETS.
AS FOR CLEANING...YOU HAD TO SEE THE DUSTBUNNIES BEHIND THE COMPUTER CENTER!!!

LAURA....LAUGHING AT THE "DYE IS SETTING" POST:lol3: :lol3: HOPE YOU WILL BE LOVING YOUR 2 THREE DAY WEEKENDS! HOW GREAT IS THAT??? ESPECIALLY NOW THE WEATHER IS EASING OFF. ENJOY THE DOWN TIME. :beach:

CEEJAY...I WONDER IF THE DR KNOWS ABOUT THE CHEMICALS YOU USE AT THE PLANT AND ANY SMELLS THEY GIVE OFF WHEN USED. ALSO THERE MUST BE SOME ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE CONTAINERS AS WELL. I WORKED IN A PHOTO PLANT DEVELOPING FILM DAY AFTER DAY AND PRINTING OUT HADN DEVELOPED PICTURES WHILE HUGE MACHINES DEVELOPED OTHERS. WHEN I TOLD THE SINUS DR ABOUT NIT HE SAID THAT WOULD EXPLAIN WHY I HAD SO MANY IRRITANT PROBLEMS. THE NASAL PASSAGES HAD BEEN BURNT. NOW I LOIVE WITH THE RHINITIS.
HOPE THEY CAN FIGURE OUT HOW TO HELP YOU. NO ONE IS FILLING IN FOR ME IN THE OFFICE THIS WEEKEND.THE BOOKKEEPING COMPANY CANCELED EVERYTHING.

ELLEN....HOPE THIS WEEK FINDS YOU FEELINGMUCH BETTER. HANG IN THERE.

MELODY525 03-20-2011 09:32 AM

Ceejay...good Morning You SneaKer Inner You!! Glad The Trip Went Well. I Got A Desktop As I Have Some Problems With The Smaller Laptop. Both Eyes & Hans Aren't What They Used To Be. I Bet The Mighty Mississippi Must Be A Site To Behold In Person! Beautiful Day Down There?? You Got A Lot Done Already And So Early!

happy2bme 03-20-2011 12:53 PM

Good morning ladies (while there is still a bit left of it). I guess I had a me afternoon yesterday. Got my hair freshly colored. Asked my stylist "how gray am I". She said about 50 percent on the top, about 20 percent in the back. Easy to ignore it when you don't see it. Afterwards I trekked over to the salon - needed a pedicure badly. Not too fond of the toe color - a bronze of sorts - but I picked it. I generally stay in the pinks and reds and occasional light orange. But once in a while I pick and off color to be different and I never like it. When will I learn? While I was there I also got my eyebrows waxed. When DH and I were at the mall earlier they have a new shop where the Indian girls do the threading. I have always wanted to try that but there were too many people sitting in chairs waiting. So I had the nail salon girl wax the brows. She does a very nice job. So now I'm all spiffy and no where to go but stay home and clean house! We decided to hold off on the bed for now - even with the discounts it still came to $4500 - most of the money is for the base which allows you to ellevate the feet and head. DH thinks it would help his back issues. I did like the slight incline - I think it would help with sinus and snoring too - not too elevated but slightly and it's easier if the mattress tilts instead of using pillows. Just can't justify that crazy price. :dizzy:

DH just came in from out back and said the azaleas are budding. :yay: We really need to get out there and do some yard trimming. I need to borrow Annie and Shad for 2 weeks. It's absolutely gorgeous out there - I have all the doors and windows open.

Mel -I'm so excited about your new computer :carrot: How nice was that of your friends to take care of you? I hope you zoom faster than blazes loading those pages. Just don't trip on the cords. You so very much deserve a nice surprise like that.

I talked to my Mom last night. She didn't really take off on the rant about the Japanese - her memories are of the torture of the soldiers and she was also not fond of them buying up practically all the property of her beloved Hawaii back in the 80's. She also remembers some arrogance on their part when she visited there last as if it was Japan and not part of the USA. So I can't blame her for her feelings. She did say she felt badly for the people who lost everything in the villages and for those who might be doused with radiation. She did not however understand why we were sending money over there when she thought that Japan was the world's 3rd wealthiest country. I explained to her the donations were not to Japan itself, but to rescue and emergency response organizations like the Red Cross (another place that will set her off by the way  ) that were out there sending people and supplies to help out. She was ok, she knows not to go off on a rant to me, unlike my sister who just listens and lets her go off.

Ceejay - I have seen warnings about the river flooding but we are completely across town so I haven't taken note of it. I'll bet it's something to see. I remember how bad it was up north along the Iowa Illinois border a long time ago. Glad you had a good trip and it was nice of you to comfort your neighbor.

Shad - regarding the cooking classes - we might wait until later this year to take them again although with us travelling up north periodically throughout the year now, it probably won't work with the schedules we'll have. Too bad, because both of us were very interested in them. We can always take some single classes but the university series gave you 2 extra classes for the price I think. One of the things I want for the new house is a small greenhouse. With the short growing season I was thinking of starting seedlings ahead of time. Then I was thinking - maybe I can extend the growing season by growing tomatoes in pots in the greenhouse. It wasn't until you said "how do they get pollinated" that I went DUH, she's right! Guess another good idea that seemed like it would work! The new tractor is an automatic shift so when we come over we can all have a spin on it. If you come in winter we will even let you use the snowblower and plow :lol3: Fat chance of that happening, right? Do you have the blow in or the rolled insulation in the attic? I would wait until the cooler winter to tackle that job!

Well apparently you can grow tomatoes in a greenhouse - just takes more effort than garden planting. Here I go flitting again!

Laura - hope your color turned out nice and do some fun stuff on your long weekend - it can't all be work!

Annie - sounded like you had a fun Saturday night. Are you off today too?

Michelle- how are things going for you this weekend? I don't recall if you've posted on FB yet.

Ellen - Right now I have a Mt. Washmore to rival yours. Last one done is a rotten egg

I need to get off this computer and get busy - have a good Sunday all.

ceejay52 03-20-2011 01:44 PM

Mel
The one thing I like about Dell computers is that they are color coded.
I have often wondered about the chemical's we use at work. I think I'll mention it Thursday. It's kinda funny cause here at work we have and HP and Dell sitting side by side.

Shad
Hadn't thought about the pollination! Sure don't want bee's in the house.

Happy
Sounds like you had a good day.I'm thinking very seriously about getting highlight's in my hair in April. My hair is almost 40% gray. If it's pretty next week end I'm working in the yard.

Shad 03-20-2011 04:56 PM

Morning all,
There has to be a way to pollinate in a greenhouse without using bees since so many countries use the method to get year round tomatoes. I have no idea what it is and since I can get 4 crops a year outside and only one with the worst of the bugs, then I don't know that I care that much.

Back to work Monday again. I am sitting here in the office all alone and thinking of what I want to achieve today. Much as I like my job, I really don't want to be here. Once I get off here it will be back to the testing again. I want to see it finished so I can get on with my real job.

Ceejay - Prince William is here. Kate is not. I believe she will be coming down here during their honeymoon as William is a rugby fan and wants to see some of the World Cup in NZ. But Wills is here - he held a cocktail party last night for several hundred people @ $500 a head. Proceeds to the Disaster Relief Fund for the floods. I didn't go. Too tired after sorting out the dust bunnies, making lunches for the week and doing another round of washing that was threatening to spill out of the laundry.

Mel - calm down or you will break out in measles or something. The seniors will always go on about the war..... as far as they are concerned 9/11 didn't really exist and certainly doesn't compete. Memories are much more pleasant the further away they are - didn't you know.
The thing about all this - Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Fukushima - that bugs me the most? It was a New Zealander that caused all this!!! If old Ernie Rutherford had never split the atom in the first place, we wouldn't be in the situation we are in now. Maybe he didn't stop and think of the consequences

Happy - I'll happily drive the lawn mower around and rip up your garden and mow down the trees and beat up the doormat and give the carpet a haircut. No problem. Just let me at it. I'm replacing the blown in stuff with the green batts - comes in bags - a bit at a time. The blown in stuff has been there 20 odd years and we found out when the builders were here that it is no longer fire proof or fire ******ant. So replaced it will be but only a bit at a time. At the same time I want to put some timber on top of it and use it for storage of stuff that we need but don't use very often - family stuff, papers, etc. Just have to make sure the boxes are ant proof, cockroach proof and all that stuff. Trying hard not to fall through the ceiling.

Okay - better get off and go do some testing. See what the system will throw up in my face today.

annie175 03-20-2011 05:16 PM

Good Afternoon.....What a marvy weekend.

DS and two buddies and DD came to Bro's band gig. What fun and both my babies in my presence....perfect....THEN....Baby boy and buds wanted to go downtown...are you kidding...we closed down the town at 3 am...then mom, let's do breakfast....geez oh Pete...we didn't get home till 5 am....I am TOO OLD for that crap. Slept till 11 then got up with the boys...hey mom, how about a home cooked meal...OMG...barely surviving last night...but did it anyway....Meatloaf, baked potatos, corn muffins, mac n cheese, mixed veggies....BB and buds didn't leave til 5pm. with leftovers in tow...Had an 8 o'clock date for movies....the Matt Damon movie..Adjustment Bureau..I think it was dumb, and all about running and chasing...no real story...boring...claimed tired and went home after movie, was home at 10 pm from date....the date didn't work out as he was not at all like I thought...nuff said about that, as I am NOT going to settle for less than what I want....yes, I may be single the rest of my life, but it will be HAPPY.

Loafed around most of the morning today, then made Peanut Butter Chip/Chocolate-Carmel Swirl brownies....took some by CVS as I always share to get rid of things....got a package for baby girl too. Came home and swept, mopped and dusted while watching the NASCAR race.....great afternoon.

That's it for me...no personals...just don't really feel like it....have a great evening/morning. Chat more tomorrow...

Love and Hugs...
