I have been doing SugarBusters for almost two years. Granted, I've had periods where it was heavily modified, but in general, I don't eat a ton of carbs/refined sugars.

My mother is on Atkins and finds that it works best for her. She has no intention of trying SugarBusters. I, personally, couldn't handle the strict regimen on Atkins.

I think it's really what one can handle/live with and what works for one's body.

Good Luck,

April Marie

Default Considering making the switch....

I am wondering if anyone has actually made the switch from Atkins to SB. If so, have you had any problem with getting hungry?

Also, how does the fat allowance differ between the two? I've only been on Atkins for 2 months but I've really gotten spoiled being able to eat regular salad dressings, cream in my coffee and regular cheese.

Another thing, I've collected a lot of really great low carb recipes. Do you think these are ok on the SB diet?

I do have to say though that I'm not so sure all this fat is good for me and I think SB sounds like a much more balanced WOE.

If there are any suggestions for making this change I would really appreciate it.

Hi MIKA and WELCOME. You may want to copy your question, or I can do it for you, and post it on the SB WEEKLY SUPPORT BOARD where you tend to congregate and will definitely get more answers to your quesiton. I personally can't comment on the switch as I haven't done Atkins, though I know a lot about it. You may gain some weight as you transition, but that's not fat, it's just your body adjusting to carbs again. Many of the gals on the board have made their way from Atkins to SB and they can give you their 2 cents.

The difference in fats is that SB recommends that approx 30% of your intake come from fat. One thing is you can have the regular salad dressing like on Atkins as long as they don't have sugar in them. Same goes with the cream and regular cheese - but you do need to make sure you don't overdue it with the fats.

Please, do come join us on the weekly board - we'd love to have you!

Default Atkins to Sugar Busters

Hi Everyone
I am just about to start Sugar Busters after my cholestrol and triglicerydes went up big time from being on Dr. Atkins for 1 month. My doctor said..that I am always in that 1% that have a different reaction than what is supposed to be.
My son pointed me to Sugar Busters. But I haven't a clue what to do...yet. Can anyone please point me in the direction of where to start..or what to read or what to buy ?
It felt so good, reading about other people having problems with Dr. A ! I am sorry for your problems...but it just felt good to know that I am not alone in this mess.
Any info would be most appreciated ! )
A Wonderful Day to All,

Some seem to have worried while on Atkins, about the amount of fat. Latest research shows that it is not fat, but rather the amount and kind of carbohydrates which controls cholesterol and triglycerides, so don't worry about that.

I don't understand the difference. I eat meat/fish/eggs/cheese, veggies, berries, olive oil & lemon juice on salads, plain yogurt, and low carb pita bread. I have been on Atkins for 34 months and have lost 111 lbs. When I choose to have a higher carb item, I go to Maintenance for the meal; and then back to OWL. I have periods where I plateau and lose weight slowly, but as a result it is no longer a diet but a way of life.

So what is the difference?

Hi Mary, I recognize you from the lowcarb board. The maintenance phase of Atkins is very much like SugarBusters. Both are based on the glycemic index. Sugar Busters is higher in carbs, but they are low glycemic carbs. Both plans are wonderful - just depends which one is more your style.

Just jumping in here real quick, I enjoy reading through all the forums on this site. But what is the difference between South Beach and SugarBusters?

If you asked me today, I would say on sugar busters you don't lose consistantly, but I am truly disgusted and depressed.

Hello Everyone

I am just starting a switchover from Atkins to SB. I did Atkins for about 8 months and lost 35 lbs and have gained 8 lbs in the past couple of days since trying to swtich over. Please tell me this is temporary. I will say that I have not been real good about drinking my water and I also started a more serious exercise routine.

LOL, I am a grown woman, too old to be afraid of eating fruit--giggle.
For those who made this switch successfully, did you experience a temporary gain?

Anytime you change your diet you body is going to make some adjustments and hold on to stuff for a few days. Your body should adjust in a few days and the extra pounds should go away. The most important thing is your eating healthy.

I did Atkins from November to January 24th before I went on vacation. I came home and went for a regular yearly exam and the Dr. asked me about dieting (I am about 75 pounds overweight). I mentioned the loss of 17 pounds on Atkins and he suggested I do a bloodwork to make sure there weren't any issues. That was on 2-2. On 2-10 I found out I had diabete type II and my cholestrol was really high. So because of my cholestrol he suggested I do more of the Sugar Busters diet. So far it's worked great. I enjoy the occasional fruit and other things I couldn't have on Atkins. I eat lean red meat occasionally but mainly fish and chicken. My husband has adjusted to the diet easily.

And I've lost 15 1/2 pounds between 2-10 and yesterday when I saw the Dr. So I feel like I am eating a more balanced diet and losing weight better.

I have the Sugar Busters diet and it has really helped.

Mlia, 15 lbs in a month is fabulous. that is wonderful. I've been type II diabetic w/high choles for over 10 yrs. On meds but this is it. I have to do it this time or it's insulin. NO WAY! I had to inject during my pregnancy and I really don't want to do it again. So I must get the weight off. My doc also says the plan seems diabetic friendly. So even though I left a depressing post the other day, I truly feel the way of eating is a way of life that all diabetics, borderline diabetics and recovering diabetics should be on. I also joined ediets. Its a little overwhelming but I like the meal & exercise journals and the support is good. But I still love everyone hear. I just substitute sugar buster ingredients into their plan. Sugar busters is a very versitile program.

So take it from someone who waited too long. Get the weight off now. You will see the blood sugar #'s go down. Good luck

You got it! And South Beach phase I is Atkins induction. That is why I have been opposed to south beach on principle. this doctor took 2 plans, combined them and made a pile of money.
