I work from home, so I'm not so concerned with wardrobe these days. I'm enjoying tossing things as I shrink, because I've had most of the big stuff for such a long time. They were looking rather ratty!
Since the only thing I really go out for these days is Pilates, I have some really nice yoga/Pilates pants (five pairs) and a variety of tops I can wear with them. I went mad last year and bought a lot of them from various sources, and I rotate through them so they don't all wear out right away.
Old Navy has great choices that aren't that expensive. Sometimes I find clearance sales online with Lane Bryant, JJill and The Avenue.
Old Navy is my friend. I buy 1 pair of jeans and recently bought 2 pairs of shorts for every size I drop. Right now I'm in an 8, so I have a pair of size 8 jeans, and then I wear my too big 10's when they are dirty. I bought a bunch of size M tops (I was an XL/L when I started), which will take me through 2 sizes. I won't buy expensive clothes until I'm at my goal.
I keep it cheap (think under $20 per item) UNLESS there's an upcoming special occasion. Then, it's almost impossible to go "cheap" without compromising just how great you could really look, plus-sized and all.
Side note: My wardrobe is a mini-store with sizes ranging from 4 to 16. (Sorry, I've never been a 0 or 2.)
I'm going the clearance rack and belt route right now for bottoms, and just letting my shirts be a little baggy. I'm having fun finding some old clothes in the back of my closet that now fit again. My plan is to be buying all new goal size clothes next summer.
It's easy to wear dresses because they can fit even with 20 pounds less on my body.
I'm an apple shape and by losing just 5 pounds, my pants start drooping, so I try to avoid wearing them.
Leggins with a top that covers your butt. ( Leggings butt is only acceptable if you look like Megan Fox)
eBay has everything.
im just making my way back DOWN through my waredrobe, throwing away/giving away to charity shops my too biggies.....to make room for a lovely new lot of clothes in 3 stones time!
I promised myself that I wouldn't buy any new clothes until I got down to my goal weight since I have "big" clothes and clothes I should be able to wear again when I get back to goal. Well I forgot to take into account in between clothes. I bought one pair of cheap jeans from Old Navy and now just a couple of weeks later after buying them, they're too big!!
Today I bought 4 pair of next smaller sized jean shorts at one of my favorite thrift stores for $7.98. I'll donate the shorts that are too big. I consider it a win-win situation. But, then again, I buy most of my clothes at thrift stores anyway-what a bargain!!!!!!
I've been buying clothes in sales or from charity shops. I'm still wearing my old bras, though, as I don't want to invest in new ones until I'm down to goal weight.
I decided to sell some of my better 'fat' clothes, to raise some cash for buying new ones. When I told hubby, he said, 'Shouldn't you keep some, in case you put the weight back on?' - !!! Restraining myself from hitting him, I told him that wasn't exactly an encouraging thing to say! He did apologise afterwards, but even so...
Even at my size, I can find stuff in the thrift stores, but because my size is pretty rare, I have to check the stores fairly frequently. I also buy online when I find a bargain.
Soft, drapey fabrics seem to be especially forgiving (and if I can find skirts and pants with drawstring or very stretchy elastic waistbands, bonus). Stretch denim that keeps it's stretch is also really great. Some stretch denim though fits really great just out of the dryer, but collapses after a few hours of wear. I have a pair of stretch denim jeans that I can only wear for about 4 hours before they start losing shape. I can barely wiggle into them out of the dryer, but five hours later I can barely keep them up.
I love casual dresses and skirts, but they can look sloppy if the fabric isn't drapey.
I have one gauze skirt that I absolutely love, and all the years I've had it, I assumed it was a full drawstring waist. Now that I'm really needing to pull the waist in, I realized that the drawstring starts at the side seams, which means that I won't be able to wear it much longer (because as I pull the drawstring, it becomes very obvious that the front half of the skirt is gathered far more tightly than the rear). I can sew a little bit, so if I get very ambitious, I might remake the waist into a full drawstring waist. Or I might just sell it on consigment.
I love selling clothes that don't fit to the consignment stores (then I shop the consignment clearance or at the charity thrift stores because they're cheaper).
I know a lot of people look forward to being able to shop certain stores at their goal weight, but I'm just looking forward to finding more things in my size at the thrift stores. I get a real thrill finding something beautiful AND cheap.
I hit the clearance areas at the outlet mall stores. Last week, I picked up 3 shirts and 2 pairs of shorts from Eddie Bauer, 2 shirts and 2 skirts from Loft, and a 3 pack of undies from Jockey all for $98. My best friend is trying to lose weight, too, and I'm handing down my bigger stuff to her. I've never had many clothes, always been fashioned challenged, so I'm sort of indulging myself with the new clothes.
One thing I consider a rule: The bigger clothes MUST leave my house. Psychological, I know, but I don't want them to ever fit again and having them there is a form of temptation.

this is where I am at this point. I've just gotten to the point where a few things are really too big, so I'm going to start getting rid of those. I'm into a whole bunch of "new" things and I should be able to continue to shop in my closet for at least another 40-50 lbs At that point, I'll probably need to fill in with a few things that fit, but I'll keep it to a minimum until I get to my final goal.
And even at that point, I really don't want to buy a ton of stuff. It will be wonderful to have a more limited wardrobe but of just the things I love and that fit me perfectly. I plan to upgrade the quality of what I own at that point (and alter things as needed once I'm at a stable size) rather than the quantity.
I don't know if I'm one to really give advice since I'm a featherweight but I know for me personally that belts helped a lot so I didn't have to run out and buy a new pair of jeans or whatever. Also, Kohl's (don't know where you live) has tons of stuff on the clearance racks. I just bought myself some new running apparel for real cheap from there and it was 70% marked down b/c it was last years style. For outfits I loved and didn't want to part with, I utilized the tailor at my drycleaners and had some stuff taken in. Hope this helps.
